'bout gongs
[edit]Hi Jack Daniel Adams! I'm writing you from your antipodes, in Veneto. First of all, it's the first time I write on someone's talk page, so tell me if I should have written this somewhere else (or in a different manner...). I'd like to ask you about a very little correction you made on "Oleg Gordievsky" english wiki page: I found a phrase about a "gong" given to someone, in which the same word linked to a wiki disambiguation page. It seemed clear to me that that "gong" was undoubtely a medal, so I changed the link to the "medal" page. Since you erased this in a matter of seconds, I think I made a mistake. Is any word with several meanings supposed to be linked to a disambiguation page, even if the meaning in the context is clear? I thought it should have been clever to give a searcher the correct link. Or was my error something more subtle (or grosser? :-) ) Have a nice work!89.118.72.94 (talk) 05:27, 27 March 2009 (UTC)89.118.72.94
- Ahh I see thats my fault sorry when i read over the changes made i thought i had been changed to medal in the main article, I didnt realise you were linking it to the medal page i will change that back Sorry. Jack 05:33, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- Correction, i think we should leave it as is Beause if u click on the "Gong" Link on the page it has medal in the Disambiguation. Jack 05:35, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok Jack. But, still not clear to me: wouldn't be more user-friendly to give the straight link? Why forcing the wiki looker to a two step search, in which the finding of the right meaning could be not so immediate? 'T has been my case: not an english mothertongue, it took me a few seconds to get to the "medal" page from the disambiguation. Ciao! 89.118.72.94 (talk) 05:53, 27 March 2009 (UTC)89.118.72.94
- By the way, thank you for the quick answer! 89.118.72.94 (talk) 06:06, 27 March 2009 (UTC)89.118.72.94
- Yes i do see where you are coming from, But i didnt atually write the page, so im not going to change that and im sure if it was a problem in the past it would have been changed and no problem Jack 06:10, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Jack, I think we should restore the link to the medal page, the disambiguation page is massive and the "medal" link is right at the bottom. By linking to medal we will help people understand the english slang, without in any way subverting "correctness". r (talk) 19:33, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ok Seems Fair enough, i didnt want to just go ahead and do it owing to the fact i didnt write the page, and i didnt know if it had anoter meaning, so if it hasnt been done already ill do it now Jack 03:56, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. Didn't want to revert your either without agreement! r (talk) 22:00, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- No Problem, Its Done Now, so if the Person who wrote the page wants to change it they can Jack 23:50, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia
[edit]Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay
[edit]Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
