David A

Hey J,

I have noticed some very bizarre edit summaries in David A's recent contributions history... I'm not at all sure what's going on with him, or that I understand where he's coming from. BOZ (talk) 19:20, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

I had seen the summary at Template:Marvel Mystic ‎. I hadn't seen the one at Dormammu on the 25th or the "mental immune system" ones.
I know he is up front with his autism, and that it was part of his friction with Asgardian. I'm hoping this isn't and indication of a progression there. That said, he may have taken on board a new philosophy that blurs the line between fiction on religion. It reads that way.
It may be worth someone approaching him less caustically than this. But it is still something to keep an eye on.
- J Greb (talk) 23:14, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Right, I know what you mean, I am aware that he has these conditions, and seeing these unusual thought processes I was concerned as well. I'm not going to pretend to be any kind of mental health specialist, so I'm really not sure how to proceed with him. It certainly can't be allowed to get in the way of getting things done the right way on the encylopedia, but at the same time I don't want to come down on him the wrong way. BOZ (talk) 00:14, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
More here.[1] BOZ (talk) 16:06, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Definitely not good... and not a situation I want to step into. - J Greb (talk) 23:01, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Me neither... although I suppose someone will have to do something if he disrupts articles to prove his point. BOZ (talk) 16:10, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Someone should email. And asap. WP:OTRS, if you can figure it out (I couldn't at my first glance). Though maybe the arb mail list would be more approriate since, while the editor self-declared, there could be privacy concerns. I'll drop a note at User talk:Elen of the Roads to look at this thread. - jc37 22:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Tricky. I presume by OTRS you meant Oversight - I can't see anything that would actually be oversightable, but if you have something in mind, drop me a diff. While he's very much describing his own condition, feelings and experiences, he doesn't sound as if he's not in control of what he says. Something similar came up before, and he did stop - I've left what I hope is a fairly gentle note asking him not to make these edits. I will pass the message on to Arbcom, in case anyone spots the need to take more drastic action, but my gut feeling is that what he needs is continued support in the real world to ensure his mental wellness, something that Wikipedia really can't provide. Elen of the Roads (talk) 00:57, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
No but yes, that was the thought to what might be the eventual outcome.
    Thank you for helping with this : ) - jc37 02:02, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
No probs - I can see your worries exactly. WMF Office are looking at this, see if there is anything they might do real-world side to help the situation. Do flag me if you spot anything else concerning - I have email enabled if you need to pass on anything with privacy concerns. Elen of the Roads (talk) 14:01, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Picture: V for Vendetta

thumb|Cover of V for Vendetta Hi, is there any possibility to use that picture nearby for Wikipedia in other languages? We'd like to use it at the german Wikipedia. --Slayer087 (talk) 12:12, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

It depends on what the German Wikipedia's image policy is since you would have to upload it directly there. You aren't going to be able to directly link to the file page here and have the image show up on a German page. And it isn't likely to migrate to Commons since it isn't a free to use image.

Crashsnake

Do we have a problem with this user's contributions? I haven't got time to look in detail, but it seems like either they need mentoring, or are going to face a WP:COMPETENCE block fairly soon. Rich Farmbrough, 13:03, 1 March 2012 (UTC).

It's a case of 1) trying to figure out why they are making the changes and 2) mosto f the changes are either unneeded or fan oriented.
- J Greb (talk) 22:57, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
It looks like Crashsnake has reared his ugly head again. I have already reverted several of his edits ([2], [3], [4]) and left him notes ([5], [6]), so could you block him for a longer period this time if this doesn't stop him or adjust his behavior? Spidey104 14:56, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

TfD

As you (among others) have done a fair amount of work on the comics' boxes, dropping you a note. - jc37 17:51, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Ok, so it's now closed as merge.
I've been looking it over. There's a fair amount of info there. I think some (like hobbies) could be dropped, but I think they made a fair point in the discussion that the comics box seems to lean towards superheroes (and aliens, for that matter). homeworld vs hometown is an obvious example.
Wikipedia:WikiProject Fictional characters/Templates lists a bunch of such boxes. Maybe Template:Infobox comics character should be re-written some to include wider functionality? Because, at the moment, it would seem that Template:Infobox character would be the easier merge.
That aside, I'm wondering about User:Pigsonthewing/to-do/Infoboxes, and what "to-do" implies. - jc37 00:27, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
At one point... and when things hit multiple side tracks... I had intended to re-work {{Infobox Archie Comics character}} (ACc) as a pass through template with minor tweaks to {{Infobox comics character}} (Icc). Those would have been:
  • Losing "school", "job", "family", "hobbies", etc - they just would not pass to anything on Icc
  • Having "hometown" slotting into "Place of Origin" on the display.
  • Adding the an unadvertise IOM section to Icc. Expand it actually since IOM_alter_ego, IOM_full_name, IOM_alliances, IOM_partners, IOM_aliases, and IOM_powers already exist. This would pass the voice actors through from ACc, and possibly the shows.
I would agree that "Place of Origin" needs a re-work, but I'm leery of adding "hometown" to the parameters. Yes, works like Archie might make a good argument for it since they are generally solid about being sourceable and relevant, but I dread the "gotta fill it in" for the bulk of characters where it is irreverent or leads to OR.
As for Pigsonthewing... I've got no clue. I know I've hit friction with others on using the Comics creators 'box to autocat and with capping images sizes at {{Infobox film}}. It may relate to those or to something else entirely.
- J Greb (talk) 00:52, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Well for better or worse, infobox (IB) character has labels for occupation and family (And I might argue that "family" in terms of archie comics is not that far removed from "superteam" in some ways.
But yes, there are a lot of sections which really could be issues with comics characters.
What if we just set an MoS that IB comics character only be used for sci-fi/fantasy related comics characters, and the rest to IB character? - jc37 01:08, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
That might work... It might also be worth adding in a "genre" line. Sort of "Stories featuring this character tend to be science fiction, superhero style stories." And lock down some of the fan dumps.
It is also worth noting that IB character has had repeated discusions on removing or limiting the "family" like fields.
- J Greb (talk) 02:40, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm IB sci-fi character... that would definitely be a nice merge if it could be done. - jc37 04:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
