Books & Bytes New Years Double Issue

Books & Bytes

Volume 1 Issue 3, December/January 2013

(Sign up for monthly delivery)

Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%
Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors
Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration
Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitz@gmail.com. Thanks and cheers, Jake Ocaasi via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Regarding "The King's Speech"

Hello,

You very recently reversed my edit. All I did was add that The King's Speech is an "epic" film, as in the genre, which is technically and practically correct. In your undoing, all you stated was that you thought it was "better before", which is very vague. I won't change it back yet but would very much appreciate some more feedback on why you thought that the genre edit needed to be reversed. The lack of feedback when you undo people's hard work with just an automated canned sentence with no real explanation and an impersonal message makes people feel undervalued, downtrodden and generally miserable, so maybe you should reconsider your style. Can I have the explanation that I deserve in a timely fashion, please, because it's made me very upset.

Thanks

--Llama Riot

Hi, Llama Riot. I'm sorry you feel upset. The message was indeed automated, as it came from within a tool used to sift through recent changes, and I agree it was vague. I'm glad you took me up on the offer to discuss this further; please understand that most authors of reverted edits never stick around long enough to have a conversation, and so it can get frustrating for the other side, too, to put in the time to explain in detail and have no one ever read or respond to it.
To the matter itself, I do think the article is better off without the additional adjective "epic" (which was the only word you added). It is an adjective used rather injudiciously in film and book discourse, and is often (as here, I think), a matter of opinion rather than simple fact. Compare and contrast it with the existing description of the film in the first sentence -- "historical drama" -- which is far more factual and far less debatable. I think the word "epic" does not add any value to the reader, in this case. However, I will not insist, and if you strongly feel otherwise, go ahead and make the change again, and I won't revert it.
Finally, I encourage you to create an account on Wikipedia, to ease further communication with you. Ijon (talk) 02:00, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

You misunderstand the meaning of my edit. I meant it as a noun, in the way some films are described as "historical epics" or "war epics", not in the sense of "Oh wow, that was such an epic film". I won't edit it back without your agreement because I ultimately defer to your judgement, you have been here longer than I have and know much more about Wikipedia. Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to me, many of my edits get reversed and the people who do it just completely ignore me, which irritates me to no end. You have indeed assuaged my hurt feelings, I wonder what your feelings are about the edit now I've clarified how I meant the word "epic" to be interpreted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.92.237 (talk) 02:18, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

I did understand you were not using "epic" in the colloquial (="excellent") sense, and it is to that assessment that I was responding. Whether or not the span of history presented in the movie (which I have watched), and the mode of telling it employs, should be classed an epic, is, to my mind, debatable, and I would therefore leave it out of Wikipedia.
I'm sorry to hear you haven't had a very encouraging experience on Wikipedia so far. If you're looking for things to do, take a look at the master backlog, which has links to tons of articles that need various types of attention, some of which you are no doubt in a position to help with; for instance, you can probably proofread and improve the style and clarity of some articles.
A couple of quick tips: When responding to someone, precede your paragraph(s) with a colon(:) sign, to indent the text, as I have done. If you're responding to a paragraph that already has one or more indenting colons, just add one (so, to respond to these paragraphs, which use one colon, you would use two consecutive colons (::) at the beginning of each of your paragraphs. Secondly, at the very end of your message, type four tilde characters, like so: ~~~~. This will produce the "signature", so that anyone reading the page can see who wrote what. This is a strong norm on all talk pages on Wikipedia, whether attached to User pages (like this one) or to article pages.
Feel free to leave me a message if you encounter difficulties in the future, and I'll do my best to help or to direct you further. (I am however going offline for the day. Again, it would be easier to communicate, and for you to receive a notification when I've responded, tomorrow or whenever, if you create an account and edit while logged in.) Cheers! Ijon (talk) 02:27, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of most common surnames in Asia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Joseph (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The Deer Hunter main character ethnicity

I changed the listed ethnicity of the characters in The Deer Hunter because it was incorrect. The main characters are Ukrainian not Russian. They attend a Ukrainian American Citizen's Club (the Lemko Club, named after an ethnic group of Ukrainians), get married in a Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and dance traditional Ukrainian dances such as the Hopak and the Kolomeika. The confusion between Ukrainian and Russian culture and peoples is something that has been plaguing the Ukrainians for centuries. If you need more proof, I'd be happy to provide it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BytorsSnowdog (talkcontribs) 01:29, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Silva page vandalism

I support action against wiki editor Muharemovic2000 for the repeated vandalism to the Tony Silva page recently (I saw the four warnings on their user page). I'm a personal friend of Tony's, and that hostile user has also attacked him on Facebook recently. I'll be working with Tony soon to see how I can help improve his page. Also, I reviewed the BLP info and am unclear on whether or not the photo can be removed (per the LP's request)? Thanks. MKC (talk) 19:10, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Yes, it can be removed: you can make that request by starting a new request (using the button) here. Ideally, perhaps it could be replaced with a photo Mr. Silva would prefer. Ijon (talk) 19:51, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

RMI and Wikibreak probably

I am feeling glad to inform you that the userpage draft I started has been promoted and move to project space now and may be accessed here at WP:RMI. Please see the discussion at its talk page. (RMI stands for "Roadmap India")

And

I am feeling sad to inform you that I have been suffering for fever and facing some serious real-life difficulties (including problems at workplace, probably going to lose the job). I have applied for a couple of jobs, one from a job-search website, and another of a "remote Wikimedia community advocate". Let's see how it goes.

The grand initiatives you took, must be taken forward, but everyday I am losing energy. Believe it or not, the "India Against Corruption" is the third dispute I have been working in currently. There are a couple of more. Anyway, we/youP need to take these "proposed roadmap" works forward. --TitoDutta 01:00, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Tito, this is great work, and surely will be the basis for much work in the near future. I am sorry I have not been able to engage directly so far, but will be making time very soon.
I'm sorry to hear of your real-life difficulties, and the IAC affair is surely very draining too. I hope the job search works out for you, one way or another!
I'll keep you posted about developments. Ijon (talk) 22:47, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Attempt to organize things

. . . so far we were discussing here and there. I have tried to gather all scraps of discussions, so that we can see what users were thinking and discussing already, I wanted to copy a particular Facebook message as well, but, I can't do it for copyright and privacy issue. Anyway, I am quite sure, some of these "already done discussions" are quite interesting: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_India/Condensed_proposed_roadmap_for_Wikimedia_work_in_India#First_half_of_October.27s_unorganized_discussions

Based on the responses I have seen, I have started preparing a document "List of potential participants" (some people have directly (or indirectly) told that they want to join.)

If you really get some time for these works, I personally request you to take these two roles/responsibilities—

  • Task distribution management advisor/lead: The "community" will do "this" and "this" — may/will not take us anywhere. We need specific/clear task distribution. Inviting/asking the best people from the community to work on specific projects. If you want I can get a couple of consultants for you from the community.
  • Celebrity participant: Frankly speaking, I have been thinking about it for a long time. A "celebrity participant" will be very helpful. There is not much work for a celebrity participant, but his/her presence will be very important. . . that this" celebrity" is with us.

I'd ask you not to become "project lead" of En WP community for three reasons a)you have other works at Meta, b) some people may think, WMF is overtaking lead position, c) there are many editors with thousands of edits here who can lead.

But I am not the community.. The community may think otherwise, these are just my thoughts.

The task distribution manager needs to draft/plan the team, something like (just a draft)—

  • Project leaders/captains
  • Task distribution manager
    • 2 or 3 community consultants
  • Trackers and recorders (who'll track all works)
  • Project co-ordinators
  • Communication co-ordinator (who'll communicate with other Wikis, WMIN etc. I'd suggest Ravi's name here, anyway)

Umask

I saw that you reverted an anon edit to Umask, but I think the anon was correct. You can see a fuller example of using an 077 umask at Umask#Setting the mask using octal notation. You may have confused umask with chmod, or perhaps my Unix skills are too rusty and I don't know what I'm talking about.-gadfium 20:50, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Quite right, gadfium! Thank you very much for pointing my attention to this! I have self-reverted on Umask. Ijon (talk) 02:49, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

WMF annual report

Hi, Asaf! I just read this on the report:

"Everyone is a potential Wikipedian. All it requires is a belief in our shared vision — a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge."

That's exactly what I told you the other day. So our mission is to encourage people to collaborate. Good luck! --NaBUru38 (talk) 22:31, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi, NaBUru38! Yes, indeed. :) Ijon (talk) 01:01, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
