Hi. This is the user talk page for Icarus 23, AKA Mark P. Steele. As a professional writer, I asked the question, since there are 2 articles in Wiki (Fantomas and ILLUMINATUS!) with my name in them, one with a non-functional article link, about the appropriateness of me starting my own page. In true double bind Discordian fashion, I found that to discuss this I had to start this page on my account page. Please, editors, don't delete me until folks let me know what they think of this...

Hmm -- since I put this up, I found the article about both biographies and autobiigraphies. Also the mention about not publishing original research here first. Very educational, and items that I will remember in the future, since there are several items in the LOEG and Alan Moore articles I just added that are near the line.

Notability guidelines

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I don't think it is inappropriate for you to do an article about yourself if and only if you meet the notability guidelines. In your case, presumably "Published authors, editors and photographers who received multiple independent reviews of or awards for their work". If you do start such an article I would include citations to reviews of your work. You might also look at WP:Vanity -- note that I don't mean to imply you are vain by starting such an article. On wikipedia vanity is used as a shorthand term to describe articles on subjects not widely known enough to merit an article. --Richard Clegg 09:57, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Icarus, please sign your posts to talk pages with 4 ~ symbols in a row - Wikipedia will change that automatically to the signature and timestamp you see in other people's posts. The real point of the vanity rules is that you're not a good judge of how important/notable you are - if you can support any claims you make and keep an NPOV tone (see WP:NPOV) then you're probably OK. Just don't take it personally if the article about you gets edited or suggested for deletion. DenisMoskowitz 19:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Denis -- this is my test for doing it right -- yep, got it!. Icarus 23 21:50, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Let's see -- no awards for my work so far, I've written the ILLUMIATUS! coattails... The 'Daughter of Fantomas' book is just out, and has 2 excelelnt Amazon reviews, but I wouldn't consider that noteable yet -- and again I'm riding the coattails of earlier writers.

Verifiable? Let's see -- I had an entry in the 1975 Who's Who of American High School Students that had information on me -- largely that which my parents wanted the world to know. Then there's the little bits of info that I put in the ILL! comic, some of which someone (I don't know who -- I suppose I could dig through its history and find out...) put in the ILL! article (I was surprised and complimented to see it). Then there's the bio sketch in the back of DoF and the Profile I have on Amazon.com (I wrote that, and it's more modest than the DoF version).

I am somewhat serious about this, and somwhat treating it as a Discordian joke (heaven help me, I need one -- I just got the news about Bob Wilson's condition today). Icarus 23 05:45, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe 23skidoo added the first reference to the comics in the article, and I added some of the detail. I'd still love to see the ashcan of the 4th - or have it continued. Шизомби 03:58, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, yes, the ILLUMINATUS! comic got two reviews when it first came out, both in the Comics Buyer's Guide, one by Don Thompson that slammed it mercilessly and criticised it for what it wasn't, one by Paul Curtis, Maggie Thompson's brother, that appreciated it. This was before Paul went to work for Marvel Comics. Strangely enough, I think both reviews mentioned Watchmen.

Fantomas

[edit]

Look, as I've reviewed the guidelines and the Fantomas article myself in the last few minutes, there is a reference to the translation and its ISBN # in the bibliography up top and notes. If that's all you think is needed, fine. If you have more to say about it, well, the article could use more about translations into English so if you could dig up more about other translations some of us would like it. Finally, regarding conflicts of interest, a look at the history page will show you that Jean-Marc L'Officier is as much a contributor as he is a cited source. Be bold like him.Jplatt39 23:39, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Good suggestions -- I've been reading some of the material on biographies here, and will probably add more later, like a section on English translations, and some of my biographical info contained in published sources (my Amazon.com profile page and some (though NOT the future projects plug) of the info in my "Daughter..." bio. Also a list of my published works.

There -- my vanity's fulfilled, I have this page, my amazon.com profile page, and my CBG profile page, all linked to each other! yay! (Am I twelve today?!?) Icarus 23 01:27, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea. Keep me posted if it goes up. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 10:11, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Gruenwald Sandbox

[edit]

Hey, Mark. As per your comment on Talk:Mark Gruenwald, I've set up a sandbox page for you to tinker with. Once the content is ready, you can just integrate it into the pre-existing article. DS 23:02, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I was reading about sandboxes, but haven't quite got to working on it yet. I'll try and get something in this week -- between looking for paying work and digesting the new copyright info available on the web now I haven't been here much. But it'll be an INTERESTING winter... Icarus 23 21:59, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ha-ha -- thanx, I needed that!!!
Was real busy here for awhile, got depressed over Wilson's coming death, got GLOBALLY displayed at Wilson's world wide Meme-Orials, by sending art files from the comic (instigated by Bob's daughter -- she asked for pictures, I gave her PICTURES!) -- staged managed teh local Ethnic Diversity Celebration for the third year in a row, and established my muspace presence -- www.myspace.com/icarus_23 -- culminating with posting art files from the Meme-Orial in a slide show, and posting it to almost ALL the Yahoo groups I was part of -- YEESH, the lengths I go thru to try and establish noteability! I swear!!!!

Your personal Operation Mindfuck?

[edit]

It appears that 24.176.20.60 added a bogus "Thanks for improving Discordianism page" message to about 50 users today, including me, and I'm positive I've never edited Discordianism, so I can only assume that you're trying to drum up interest in the page? Or are you the target of someone else's practical joke? Would you tell me either way? Rpresser 17:59, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
