Wikipedia Research Survey Request
[edit]Hello, I am a member of a research group at Palo Alto Research Center (formerly known as Xerox PARC) studying how conflicts occur and resolve on Wikipedia. Due to your experience in conflict resolution on Wikipedia (e.g., as a member of the Mediation Cabal) we’re extremely interested in your insights on this topic. We have a survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=400792384029 which we are inviting a few selected Wikipedians to participate in, and we would be extremely appreciative if you would take the time to complete it. As a token of our gratitude, we would like to present you with a PARC research star upon completion. Thank you for your time.

Monty Python TfD compromise
[edit]There is a compromise now posted on the TfD if you are still interested in this debate. One question, even though you are against this TfD, have you even taken the master template out for a test drive?

{{AMA alerts}}
[edit]I hardly find it appropriate to put big screaming boxes at the top of usertalk pages. If you want to leave messages, I ask you put them at the bottom of the page under a new heading in plain text. I understand their position may have been a mistake - but please consider different ways of conveying the message. Thanks! Ian¹³/t 17:12, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't mean to offend, Ian, I'm simply trying to implement an opt-outable system to communicate between all Advocates without having to post something on every single talk page. The template idea seemed like the best way to do things, as with transclusion, all that need be done is one page change and all tagged pages are updated. If you find it a bit too brash, feel free to remove the template and please accept my apologies. אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 22:31, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- No problem, I was just letting you know that big orange messages at the top of usertalk pages doesn't always keep everyone happy. Thanks! Ian¹³/t 11:44, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Please don't present your personal opinion on the SC issue as official WP policy. As admins, we need to work this stuff out by consensus (and involve foundation members where appropriate). Your edit was improper, as the account was blocked for impersonation concerns (not retribution). Furthermore, your statement implies that an admin consensus exists on this issue to the effect that SC is not welcome here. That is simply not true. If that account is validated as belonging to him, then it'll be unblocked. If you have any concerns about this, let's bring it to WP:AN. - CHAIRBOY (☎) 20:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I have updated the talk page with the comment removed. I reccomend to bring it to the administrator's notice board or bring a foundation member in to make a decision as serious as this. Last time I checked admin's can't speak for an organization, especially not when the decision may end up being seen outside of Wikipedia. --Nick Catalano contrib talk 00:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I hardly think I was misrepresenting Wikipedia policy. It to me seems obvious that that account was used as part of a bid to bring mass Vandalism to Wikipedia in a very promenent way. I hardly think we need to show users that you can make public bids for vandalism and get away with it. WP:BP clearly states "Sysops may block IP addresses or usernames that disrupt the normal functioning of Wikipedia, or pose any kind of threat to it." I hardly think the actions linked to this case are anything but disruption. I also presonally object to removal of my edit - you are more than welcome to state it is invalid on the page - but removing others comments because you don't agree with them hardly resolves anything. I personally would be surprised if anyone unblocked the account (even if it was verified to be him) purely because of the massive disruption to elephants he caused (and he will have been the one that caused it if it was him). I can't see how it couldn't be seen as anything else. Nethertheless, I hardly see the point of waring over whether my comments should be removed - but I do ask you don't do it - but instead add a comment and discuss with me first. It may have been misplaced (and quite possibly was) but I think people are disucssing the wrong things. Happy editing! Ian¹³/t 19:59, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Wikibreak
[edit]Hey Ian, I hope you have a good Wikibreak, and that you find yourself able to work well again. Have a nice time relaxing, we hope to see you back here soon! -- Natalya 15:10, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Ian, have a nice Wikibreak. It's good to take a break once in a while, and I hope you will be back soon. Oh yes, do you have MSN or Yahoo! Messenger BETA 8? If you have, you may add me, the addresses are on my user page. As for Yahoo! add my Windows Live, since now it is interchangable. P.S. Its time I should have a break, but Wikipediholism is stopping me from doing it. Cheers --Terence Ong (T | C) 06:25, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

WP:GUS
[edit]Please read the box at the top.
The German userbox solution to the userbox controversy (so named because it originated on the German Wikipedia) is to put userboxes in user space. No new policy is needed to do this, and this is not a policy proposal. Just go ahead and do it. So, yes, if they're moving them to user space, GUS as a reason is fine. 1ne 09:12, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Not really. Also, I am more concerned by people who say "GUS is practically policy anyway". We can all have our own opinions. Ian¹³/t 16:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes really. What, they should sit clogging up template space? 1ne 04:37, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yep. Think of it this way, some may feel there are to many religions, but that doesn't mean we have the right to state everyone must be an athiest, and move all the religions somewhere else. They are still there, and it doesn't really matter what namespace number userboxes are assigned in the database. Ian¹³/t 18:52, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

- Thank you, and I won't. I am not a personal liker of all the userboxes there are, but some seem a little misguided in their control of the situation. Ian¹³/t 18:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Just to let you know that I have already responded to your comment you left on my RfA and the question you were waiting for me to answer. Cheers.--Konstable 22:28, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
Greetings from Paris
[edit]Hello there. I thought I recognised your name on the "mediation Cabal" page - then I recalled that you've been a witness to "Paris happenings" once before. I've yet another problem with resistance to obvious fact - but the case has just been sitting there for days now. Do cases usually take some time to get picked up? I'm a bit concerned that the both factual and "foreign" aspect of this case may waylay some. Any advice - ? I suppose I should just wait but I would like to be sure.
Thanks, take care,
THEPROMENADER 10:25, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- Cases sometimes can take a while, and certain topics to deter people. As long as the case is showing up here people are able to see it and review. Ian¹³/t 16:36, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- I see that it is there. It is one of the oldest cases which hasn't been picked up, but it should do soon. Ian¹³/t 16:41, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Done, taken. Sorry to bother you for nothing, and thanks for the pointer. Cheers. THEPROMENADER 07:13, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Association of Members' Advocates
[edit]Hi, you are receiving this message because you have listed yourself as an active member of WP:AMA. If you aren't currently accepting inquiries for AMA, or if you have resigned, please de-list yourself from Wikipedia:AMA Members. If you are still active, please consider tending to any new requests that may appear on Category:AMA Requests for Assistance. We're going to put AMA on wheels. :) Sorry for the template spamming - we're just trying to update our records, after we had a huge backlog earlier in the week (if you've been taking cases, then sorry, and please ignore this :)). Again, sorry, and thanks! Martinp23 21:02, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Regarding {{User:KyraVixen/Userboxes/Pancakes}}
[edit]Might I inquire why you moved this userbox back to the Template: namespace, then copied the coding back into {{User:KyraVixen/Userboxes/Pancakes}}? If I am not mistaken, I have followed the appropriate steps for userfying the box through WP:GUS. I am not angry or anything, I am just rather curious as to why you decided to do so. Almost all (save two transclusions as of the time I am writing this) of the previous tranclusions from the userbox due to the {{User UBM UBX to}} template have been bypassed, so the current userbox within my sub page has become the new 'master' box, for lack of a better word.
I guess the most concise question I can ask is; why break the history of the userbox, and why duplicate information? May you have a pleasant day, and happy editing. --Kyra~(talk) 21:25, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
- Feel free to forward your 'master' copy to the template space, but I personally don't think that anyone had a right to claim any userbox to their userspace (per GUS or whatever it is now called). I will happily reverse any userboxes out there to their template page, until GUS followers have some basis of authority for doing so (and no, I am not a policy lord; I just don't think that one party should decide what everyone has to do without some form of discussion and community approval).
