College football editing

[edit]

Iamsogoodatchess1469, welcome to Wikipedia. I've noticed a bunch of your edits on college football articles in recent days and want to point out a few issues and mistakes, some of which I have reverted. Generally speaking, websites like http://mexicosportscollectibles.com/, https://mcubed.net/, https://ahsfhs.org/, https://utestats.com/ should not be considered reliable sources and should be not be cited on Wikipedia. These sites all look like personal database projects with no clear statement of editorial oversight. In many cases, these site appear to just be copying what is reported in various media guides, or copying other sources that have pulled info from media guides. And program media guides tend to be littered with inaccuracies and omissions, particularly when going back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. We have a growing lists of such errors here: Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Media guide errors.

When database sites like those above or media guides are in conflict with well-documented contemporary news coverage, we should defer the contemporary news coverage. For example, at 1928 Haskell Indians football team, the score of the Tulsa game was reported by the Tulsa Tribune the day after the game as 27–6 with details that substantiate how that final score was attained. Those websites that you cited for the 33–6 score appear to repeating an error that originates in the Tulsa media guide. We have a similar story with the location of the Jackson State vs. Mississippi Valley State game at 1993 Jackson State Tigers football team and 1993 Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils football team. Newspaper coverage confirms that this game was played at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. A couple other notes there: first, citing eBay listings is not a good idea. Second, the discussion/notation you added with this edit belongs in the article's talk page, not in the article itself.

Articles like 1920 University of Wisconsin–Stout football team should not be created without sourcing that establishes that the subject is notable; see Wikipedia:Notability. In 1920, the University of Wisconsin–Stout was known as "Stout Institute", so this article is misnamed. It should probably be named 1920 Stout Institute football team or 1920 Stout Institute Blue Devils football team (if the "Blue Devils" fight name was already in use in 1920) or something like that.

You may want to see about getting access to Newspapers.com. It's a great resource. See: https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/26/. Let me know if you have any questions about this stuff. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 14:52, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
