Snow groomer

[edit]

Hi Iain, thank you for your interest in the snow groomer article. I see that the Cambridge English Dictionary cites "piste basher" as "informal". If one includes that informal usage, then perhaps there are other terms from elsewhere that should be included. I suggest leaving it to the mainstream term. Hi there
In the UK, I would estimate 95% of skiers refer to these machines as 'piste bashers' - many don't even know what a 'snow groomer' is, but I'm happy to agree that it is an 'informal' use. I'm also relatively new to Wikipedia, so happy to be led by you on this. Thanks, Iain Iainmski (talk) 05:12, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. In North America, few would know what a "piste" is or how to pronounce it, much less a "piste basher". With your insight on not knowing what a "snow groomer" is in the UK, I would favor including the informal term. I'll do that. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 13:28, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, just as a follow up, this is an article I wrote for the British national paper 'The Daily Telegraph', which as you see refers to 'piste basher' in the title...it's just the term used in the UK: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/ski/articles/meet-the-wheelchair-bound-piste-basher-driver-world-first/
