Hi! You recently moved my page on Jane F. Gardner into Draft. I am fairly new to Wikipedia, and this is my first new page, so I'd really like some pointers on how to improve. Do you have any specific reasons for moving the page, and if so, how can I put them right?

Thanks in advance StuartMcKie StuartMcKie (talk) 11:22, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@StuartMcKie: I moved the article because I had thought you meant to put in draftspace. This was probably due to draft tags on the article itself. I guess I was mistaken, but it seems as though you could use the help you can get in draftspace, anyways. Once you're done, go ahead and submit the draft. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 03:08, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I created an article [[1]]and you rejected due to references. I appreciate the time spent and I wanted to get some clarification. You wrote "Patents and other Wikipedia articles don't establish notability" Is the concern the company is not notable enough for wikipedia or are the references re the company insufficient. My thinking was that being granted 14 patents in one industry was a basis for notability? I read through the FAQs regarding citations and will follow through but wanted to see if I could get some clarification. Thanks, Bctwriter (talk) 01:08, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Bctwriter: Basically, I wouldn't consider patents to be independent enough to establish notability; they are "too close" to the company if that makes sense. I am uncertain at this time if the company is notable enough for Wikipedia.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 03:10, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thanks for comments above. I have reworked the article and resubmitted. The patents are still there (as i think those should count) but have added extensive thrird-party validation. Thanks Bctwriter (talk) 14:20, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

I edited the Brendan Hansen entry because the information is irrelevant to the article. Information about coaching accomplishments by one of his old teammates decades after swimming with Hansen have no reason to be included. Furthermore, inclusion of that kind of information would add terabytes to Wikipedia if it was included in every article. It doesn't meet any reasonable standard of information worthy of inclusion. 104.219.112.34 (talk) 21:30, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's a dab page, as you recognised, so ought to be an orphan, can't be a stub, and shouldn't be tagged as either. Do your AWB settings need to be adjusted? PamD 06:53, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@PamD: I'm not sure how I can get AWB to not auto-tag disambiguation pages, and will almost always skip it. I didn't this time. Whoops! Sometimes, other changes need to be done (typo-fixing, etc.). Perhaps someone like Reedy needs to fix this? -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 11:47, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But you're responsible for all your edits, even when using AWB - if you'd been looking at the edits it was making you'd have seen that it turned {{geodis}} into {{place name disambiguation}}, which was a pretty good clue that this was a dab page so that the other changes were inappropriate. Ah well, perhaps just a one-off blink, but please watch out for dab page. Thanks. PamD 13:52, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@PamD: Yeah, I'm usually pretty good at catching that, but you're right, I am responsible. Sorry about that.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 14:05, 6 February 2019 (UTC) (Repaired ping at 17:12, 6 February 2019 (UTC))[reply]

DG wikipedia page

[edit]

yes, I'm David Graeber. I rarely check my wikipedia page but for what possible reason did someone think 1 out 5 paragraphs devoted to my entire "activist" career and the majority I think of that devoted to my relation to OWS should consist of some guy who thinks my one-time appearance on some TV show shows that Russia was trying to "co-opt" Occupy? I tried to merely reverse the edit, since in general when people add paragraphs that are obviously tangential to the subject matter at best and pursuing some personal hobbyhorse are removed quickly. Instead it was put back.

If you don't believe I'm me I also complained on twitter, using my own account. DG — Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.143.228.165 (talk) 17:08, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My comment to Atcovi on the Freeman page

[edit]

Hey I get why it was removed as it was definitely targeted and negative, and I don't really respect this to change anything, but I do have a couple questions.

1. I mean, like, it was pretty clear it was lighthearted, right? No one's feelings were being hurt, I really just wanted to leave a message so that my disapproval would be noted, is there any way I could do that? Like would I just stay up if I was just like "hey I respectfully disagree because of X, Y, and Z"?

2. I mean I know that like atcovi is kind of following the atcovi is generally following the guidelines kinda sorta but weren't their comments pretty cruel? Like I really just thought they came off as haughty and it'd be great to get some affirmation — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.239.194.124 (talk) 04:59, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I wonder if you would be able to take a look at the explanation I provided on The Henry Drinker talk page for a deletion I attempted on January 25. I’m new to this and I now recognize that I should have provided an explanation before I made an edit. One of the other editors was good enough to tell me where to do that. Thanks for reviewing my article "I dream of horses". I'd love to know:- 1. What made you to reject that submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources? The ISBN number and the details of the book are clearly indicated. It was published by Dhyanavana, a leading publisher for christian spirituality in India. ( http://carmelbangalore.com/dhyanavana_publications.html).

2. To add more details the book was released by Cardinal of Syro-Malabar church Monsignor George Alanchery, Archbishop-Patriarch of Goa and Patriarch of East- Msgr. Filip Neri Ferrao. ). It is also sad to say that a book lauded by the Superintending Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India, Goa circle, Old Goa (even included in the back cover) is labelled "not an reliable source" by an experienced wikipedia editor.

3. Moreover John Marshal is the Author of the book. The details about his life and works are summarized in page p. 21-22 of the book. It is a common understanding that the life and works of the author should be placed in a single section not the entire book. All the information were verified by the publishing house before the publication (as testified by the Nihil Obstat issued by Rev. Fr. Charles Serrao, OCD, Provincial of Karnataka Goa province of Discalced Carmelites, President IPCI).

Rego90 (talk) 05:30, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Rego90: If the only source you can find is two pages in a book written by the person you're writing about that you then have to use repeatedly throughout the article, the person you're writing about doesn't qualify for a Wikipedia article. This is a fate shared by many people who are important, but didn't achieve enough fame to be written about by others.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 19:33, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I will say that what you've done is certainly a step in the right direction, but remember:
  1. You really only need two or three inline citations, at most, after a sentence.
  2. Inline citations need to be integrated in the article.

Hello. I've noticed that you have auto patrolled capability. I have found an article that is in bad need of patrolling. You can find it here. Indeed - perhaps they will get around to reading the issues outlined on the talk page - we have on the average one company or organisation a week in the australian project thinking they can update their wikipedia page with their username directly linkable - its quite an incessant act of thinking the wikipedia is a website to update, sad. JarrahTree 04:26, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JarrahTree: To be fair to Australia, that's a problem with companies all over the world.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:28, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think that there should be a template built into organisation/company article creation that gives a checklist of items that edits on those items need checking: Username/COI/ etc etc JarrahTree 04:32, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JarrahTree: Paid editors are usually good-faith, but I wouldn't trust them to not have "sign/checklist blindness". A lot of them would probably scroll to the bottom and mindlessly hit "next".  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:40, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
insufficient emojis on wp to respond to that :| JarrahTree 04:42, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@JarrahTree: Sign blindness is an unfortunate bit of human psychology, and I'm sure we fall pray to at least once in a lifetime. Of course, some of us are more prone than others.

That, and sometimes paid editors are put in an unfair situation, where they are basically expected to violate Wikipedia policy by their employer. I mean, not that justifies the impact of violating Wikipedia policy, but still.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:47, 20 February 2019 (UTC) (added word at 04:49, 20 February 2019 (UTC))[reply]

@JarrahTree: "Newbie that are clueless" is a broader and seperate category from "paid editor". I suppose there's significant overlap, though.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 04:59, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, my user name is Sushigirl1962,

I made some edits on Tomboy, the movie about the story of the transgender boy. I was wondering, why did you undo my edits? They weren't offensive, if anything I was making the writing less transphobic. I'm gender-fluid and that film is transphobic and homophobic and I was trying to make, at least, the writing less transphobic. I hope that you can understand this and undo what you have done because having something like that out in the world pushes people like me farther into the dark where we commit suicide because we believe that we have to be cisgender when we aren't and we can never be. Please, let me edit this page because I truly believe it will result in less deaths of young boys and girls and children.

Hello, I am the writer of Michael Nestor. I use shortened notes linked with {{tl|sfn}} and citation templates, styled Sudirman. - NorthPark1417 (talk) 07:39, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@NorthPark1417: I would think that in situations where you're not citing a limited number of books, you would use more common methods of inline citing Wikipedia articles for consistencys' sake.-- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 07:48, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A message from Actaudio

[edit]

I noticed you left a note on a draft I submitted saying the page already exists. It's since been fixed so I'm wondering if it's ok for me to remove that (I don't want to do anything in bad etiquette!) or how would be better to handle it. Thanks! https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Paula_Fairfield Actaudio (talk) 08:46, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Actaudio: Glad you asked. It's actually preferable to keep the comment there. I'm sure reviewers will realize that the issue is resolved by the time stamp after my signature, but it's handy to easily assess the history of a page. -- I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 17:05, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What to do?

[edit]

I see that you've communicated with this new user. I looked at some of their edits, and I think that 95 percent of them are bad edits. I don't think they are a vandal, but they are introducing bad grammar, usage and punctuation to a large number of articles. What should be done?: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sand_Emu -- Ssilvers (talk) 02:33, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ssilvers: This is one unusually obvious manifastion of what the "competence is required" essay is talking about. Perhaps just clean up their edits, and see if they respond positively or negatively.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 02:49, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Removing a revision in history

[edit]

Hello. This is the first time I do something on Wikipedia and I made a submission there. Unfortunately I forgot to log in while editing something minor on my submission and now people can see my IP address. Is it possible to delete the revision on my submission so that my IP is also gone? Zackalaf (talk) 01:18, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Zackalaf: I'll see if this is possible.  I dream of horses (My talk page) (My edits) @ 01:34, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done For future reference, this is something covered in WP:Oversight. ~ Amory (utc) 01:35, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
