Pages to edit

Hello, if there are pages you think need editing I have lots of time in my day to edit them. I am running low on pages to edit, as most of them are already as good or better than I could do them alone. Just asking for suggestions.Reid, iain james (talk) 22:46, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

  • There are lots and lots of articles to edit. Click the random article button, and see where it takes you. Visit WP:STUBS, and find the stubs for articles that are in a topic that interests you. As a new user, I'd suggest you refrain from editing Featured Articles (those with a star on them), just until you get some more experience, but expand a few stubs, and that will help everyone. Some guidelines for you to read: WP:GNG, WP:RS, WP:ORG, WP:5P. I hope you enjoy your stay! Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 07:27, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Hello, I am wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how to add a language to pages. I am currently trying to add the Netherlands Wikipedia to Gravisauria but I keep getting a redlink. Mesozoic Stages

Mr. Reid,

I noticed that you corrected the time range that I added for the Toarcian stage in the Vulcanodon article. I looked up the time range in Wikipedia's Toarcian article and I observed it to be 174.1–182.7 (according to the table on the far right). I rendered this as 174-182. Your correction was 175-183, which appears to have come from the lead paragraph of that article. Which time-range is right? The table on the right records its source as "the IUGS, as of July 2012", while the reference linked to the lead paragraph cites the work of Gradstein et al. (2004). The source of the table's data appears to be more recent, so I made a rookie mistake assuming I should go with that. Tell me what you think.Evangelos Giakoumatos (talk) 01:56, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

In the lead of that article it says 175.6-183. It also has that date in Gravisauria as the date the diverged from Sauropoda, and Vulcanodon is the, if not the, earliest Gravisaurian known. Also, that table is from 2012, the most recent page edit is from sooner than that. 175.6-183 is what I think. Reid, iain james (talk) 02:16, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good. You have my support. Evangelos Giakoumatos (talk) 12:27, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Megalosaurus

Hi, Reid, iain james! Thanks again for the star! I see you have begun adding a species list to Megalosaurus, which is quite a work. I happened to have made a single list here: nl:Megalosaurus which might be useful, though it is not divided by status and is more typographically simplified. Greetings,--MWAK (talk) 08:10, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

I have been working from species on the spanish wikipedia currently, but thanks a lot anyway for the information. If you could find any information that could go in the section before the species than could you add it. Iainstein (talk) 14:27, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, I propose the following:
  1. A plain text account should be given, in chronological order, of who named what species in which year (plus etymology when known). I can quickly achieve this because I have merely to translate my Dutch text. This text would be sourced, and the awkward notes can be removed from the list itself.
  2. The species should, reflecting this text, be placed in chronological, not alphabetical order.
  3. Preferably, nomina nuda should not be placed between quotation marks. Sometimes this can be functional but it is non-standard in formal species lists. Also there is the problem that it is often a matter of opinion whether a name is a nomen nudum.
  4. Preferably, the generic names should written in full (this of course is the least important aspect but it's more correct, looks better and prevents confusion when giving synonyms)
  5. Preferably, all the known synonyms should be given.
It all sounds a bit troublesome, but I truly think this will produce the best results.--MWAK (talk) 18:29, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Iainstein (talk) 22:52, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Reid, iain james! I see you have started to change the species list into something approaching a running text. I'm not sure that's a good move. It's a bit redundant given the fact that I'm adding the plain text — and this way you lose the added value of having a formal species list. If you fear people won't understand how such a list should be read, you can explain this at the start in a few lines. Of course we could merge the plain text and the species list completely but then you'll end up creating a 54-paragraph point list. It'd be so massive (not to mention ugly...), you would really need some list to summarise it all concisely — which of course is why formal species lists were invented in the first place ;o).--MWAK (talk) 19:16, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll change it (yet again) to a more list like format. Iainstein (talk) 00:21, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, at least, when this is all over, you will never forget those species again ;o). I'll try and finish the plain text tomorrow. Saturday, I'll be occupied with other things, but Sunday I'll give the species list a look. After adding some references and polishing the style somewhat the article will be ready for nomination!--MWAK (talk) 12:12, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks again. Iainstein (talk) 14:26, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
I think the article is now adequate. So, if you still want to, go ahead and nominate! To defend my reputation of being against the entire GA and FA system, the honour is all yours :o).--MWAK (talk) 06:38, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot MWAK. Iainstein (talk) 13:38, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Cladograms

Since you're skilled at making cladograms, if you encounter articles like here[1], which have cladogram images, feel free to replace them with code, I think most people would find it helpful. FunkMonk (talk) 13:43, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks FunkMonk. I'll get to it soon. Iainstein (talk) 14:02, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
I'm surprised articles such as triceratops and Tyrannosaurus don't have cladograms either. Even [[[Gorgosaurus]] has two. Almost seems essential to have! FunkMonk (talk) 14:06, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
I am to. If you could just add a list of articles that don't and could have cladograms I might be able to get them all done. Iainstein (talk) 14:10, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Yep, the challenge is of course also to find sources for them. FunkMonk (talk) 14:15, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Of course. The thing is that I know Chasmosaurinae has a cladogram and a ref for it. I also think that Tyrannosauridae has a cladogram too. Iainstein (talk) 14:17, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Eurasian Wryneck

Are there any further things that you think I should attend to before the Eurasian Wryneck GA is concluded? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I have been a bit busy lately. I'll go over it one more time. Iainstein (talk) 13:44, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your GA review of Eurasian Wryneck. With regard to Sasata's intervention, I do not really agree with his interpretation of the good article criterion 3a - "it addresses the main aspects of the topic". The footnote explaining this states - "This requirement is significantly weaker than the "comprehensiveness" required of featured articles; it allows shorter articles, articles that do not cover every major fact or detail, and overviews of large topics". Most of the scientific papers I found on the bird were on such topics as territory selection, interesting enough but not central to the article. In another review by an experienced reviewer I was told that although I had not included a section on "Taxonomy", it was not strictly necessary under the criteria because they did not demand comprehensiveness. Anyway, this article is the better for the additions and changes made during the GA process. Thank you. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:42, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
The reason I passed it before having you add more recent citations is because I find that the only section that heavily rely on the 70 year old ref is Description, and like you said, it's description would have changed in 70 years. Iainstein (talk) 13:41, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

We could try to get Cryo to GA together first. It's good practice. First step would be to gather the sources (scientific papers), and then we could split up sections we want to work on. FunkMonk (talk) 21:44, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Ok. I don't have access to many journals but I know how to find books and articles online. I have already created a page of references I use in case I need to check something in a ref. Its here. If we should just list them on Talk:Cryolophosaurus then sure, go ahead. Iainstein (talk) 00:30, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't have access either, but you can usually get all you need here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request#Cryolophosaurus_papers But it seems like some pretty crucial papers will be published some time soon[2][3] (new specimens, brain scan), so we should probably wait with this one until then. Sinosauropteryx is likely a safer bet. FunkMonk (talk) 22:35, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Species section revert

I see you've moved the Megalosaurus species section back up a notch, contrary to the extensive discussion. I have removed my strike on the item so it remains a stumbling-block. The short pop culture section does not have to go after lists; by analogy with 'Works' in a biography article, the lists can go at the end, and the pop section will then be the last text-only item which seems reasonable. If you recall, what we are trying to avoid is at least the appearance of a list in the body of the article, and while I'm not keen on having it in the article at all, it seemed to me a sensible compromise to have it in after the text. The current situation is not satisfactory. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:29, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Forest cobra

Thanks for reviewing my article nom! The article isn't too too bad, but it needs a lot of work. So I hope you do have patience, I edit articles everyday and spend several hours. It's just a matter of finding all my sources, which of course, have to be of the highest quality. I'm not a herpetologist as in a PhD, but I have a BS in Biology and one in Laboratory Science. I worked in a zoo with snakes for years and I have just upgraded the Black mamba article to GA status through all the work I did. I am going to take the same approach with this article and there will be an expansion, but I can't say for sure how big it will be. It is a Naja species and there is a wealth of research on this genus and most of the species that fall into the genus. I have a extensive collection of technical scientific books on these animals and access to peer-reviewed journalistic work. So it's just a matter of putting together all the forst cobra data and information together so I can expand and make it a GA article. Take a look at the Black mamba article to get an idea of how it might end up looking and what kind of information it will contain and how detailed it will be. It won't be as large as the mamba page, but it will definitely get expanded by quite a bit. --DendroNaja (talk) 19:34, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Can you do two reviews on venomous snakes at the same time for me? My plan is to expand and eventually upgrade all the major medically important snake species to GA status. I'm about to nominate the Many-banded krait (Bungarus multicinctus) and so if you can, pick it up for review when you see it. --DendroNaja (talk) 21:13, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Ampelosaurus

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Ampelosaurus you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Forest cobra II

I told you to a little patient, as I have been busy lately. Normally, I am editing everyday for a couple of hours. But you failed it without me having done anything on the page yet. I was collecting data and information from various sources yesterday for hours so that I can begin working on it on the morning of the 4th. Can you reverse the failure, or do I have to go through another nomination. It is an article that has a lot of potential as it can be turned into a major piece. --DendroNaja (talk) 06:52, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Many-banded krait

This article needs a lot of work on it. I will be expanding it. I just need another day to deal with this IP user that has been taking up what time I can contribute on Wikipedia. I will address some of the immediate requests you make today, but in don't expect me to begin my expansion of it today. I am dealing with a big problem with an IP user who for all he has done is still not being blocked (which is amazing). I got blocked for suggesting that a mental health section should be made for the Angelina Jolie page because her mental health has been in question since at least her father made a public plea for her to get psychological help. I got unblocked the same day, but do you see the difference? --DendroNaja (talk) 18:11, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

I have begun my expansion of the article. Take a look at it to see what I have done so far.--DendroNaja (talk) 12:21, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

GA review of Forest cobra

If you want, put it on hold while for now. Give me another `1-2 days to begin work on it. I was going to do that first, but I was dealing with a IP user who was causing me problems everywhere. --DendroNaja (talk) 19:34, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Recent Commons uploads

Hi. First off, I want to thank you for uploading File:Dinosaur park formation fauna.png and File:Chasmosaurine distribution.png. However, I noticed that both images still had bit of a white border left on them from your crop. We at Wikimedia prefer our images not to have any borders. If we want to add a border, we use the image markup. That way, the people working on the pages decide what images need or don't need borders.

It's not that big a deal, as it's pretty easy to fix, but it'd be even easier if the images didn't start with a border at all. If you are unable to crop the border yourself, please put the {{border}} tag somewhere in the description of the page, and someone else will know to come along and fix it for you.

Thanks again for your contribution! — trlkly 11:26, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Both fixed. FunkMonk (talk) 11:30, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks FunkMonk, I still have to figure out how to crop non-JPEGs. Iainstein (talk) 14:50, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I have uploaded the images now ([4]). I'm sorry for the delay, I have not found any time last week. --Jens Lallensack (talk) 10:12, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Reid, ian james, I must say that I'm unhappy with your GA nomination of Opisthocoelicaudia. I have written most of the article, I had planned to nominate it myself, but I currently don't have any time. So I will not be able to react on review proposals and so on. There is still a whole section missing that I had planned to write, so I think this nomination is a bit rash anyway. And wouldn't it be better to wait until your other nominations are reviewed? --Jens Lallensack (talk) 17:33, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, just to chime in, it is usually best to contact the main writers of an article before nominating it, as well as not nominate too many articles at one time. In this case, due to the slow rate of reviews that are happening these days, you can be pretty sure it won't be reviewed within the next couple of months, Jens. Should give you some time. Apologies...

I'm very sorry that I couldn't work on the Forest cobra article as I should've. I fell ill and spent eight days in the hospital. However, I'm back and I'm going to begin working on articles. Again, I am sorry. I should've at least told you, but I didn't have that option. Again, I'm very sorry. --DendroNaja (talk) 23:04, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. A page you started (Denazinemys) has been reviewed!

Thanks for creating Denazinemys, Reid, iain james!

Wikipedia editor Animalparty just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

Nice start. In "Distinguishing characteristics" you should make it crystal clear which taxon the traits belong to, and You might consider making the text in a little less technical (or clarified by appropriate wikilinks or in text definitions).
