Essjay

[edit]

Oh, no. No! As you can see by the current status of my own user page, I can't help but say that I don't blame him. Heck, I was just reading a page in USA Today that someone left in the studio...and there's an article by a major public figure who got utterly flamed on this site. I'm just sick. Thanks for the heads-up. - Lucky 6.9 02:37, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Headers

[edit]

Nope, it doesn't affect my archival. As long as the date is clear, it should be fine. It would make it more difficult for the bot though, but that doesn't exist yet. --HappyCamper 03:38, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Message from Eddie (Re: User Deletion)

[edit]

When a User page or any page for that matter is deleted it is gone without a trace. No page, no history, no footprints whatsoever except for the signature of any past edits made under those usernames and they will appear as red links  :-) --hydnjo
That's fine. They can delete all the accounts execpt for this one (EddieSegoura). BTW, Exicornt has a new home. -- Eddie 3:54 PM, December 1, 2005 (EST)

Thank you

[edit]
Hi Hydnjo,

Thanks for voting to support my RfA. I wasn't expecting an unopposed promotion (I thought I'd hit some die-hard edit-counters at least) and I'm touched by the trust shown in me. I'll try my best to continue to earn that trust. But first, I'll have to work on not sounding like a politician; that last sentence was awful. Oh well. Let me know when I screw something up with the shiny new buttons. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 05:57, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

E-mail

[edit]

Yes, my e-mail is current. I sent you a reply too. --HappyCamper 22:28, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No get. Gettin' from others but not you. I'll check my end again ... :-( --hydnjo talk 23:35, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, no idea. I think it has to do with the metaphorical "foul mood" that Essjay referred to a while ago. So, you didn't get either of my replies then? That's really weird. I know what your e-mail address is too, so either you're blocking my name, or your ISP thinks I'm sending you spam... --HappyCamper 23:54, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Don't ever feel that I'm not approachable though - if I don't respond in a timely manner, it's usually 99% due to my life outside of the Wiki -- There is a reason after all why the word "administrator" is absent from my user page. Enjoy the weekend!! :-) --HappyCamper 00:07, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

From HS's talk

[edit]
==Your Rfa==
Hey Hamster, I'm sorry about the dustup at RfA/talk that involved your promotion. Although I didn't vote for your promotion (nor against it), now having reviewed your contributions I would have had no problem with your candidacy. My problem with the process had nothing to do with you or your nomination but with my own perception of the process gone astray. You did nothing but stand for promotion, a daring effort in and of itself. I count myself among many other users who wouldn't, for whatever reason, subject ourselves to the RfA process. My (and Heidi's) best wishes are with you as you flex your newly ordained muscles, mop and bucket. :-) --hydnjo talk 03:06, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's all good

[edit]

Thanks for your comments, my apologies in advance if you wanted to leave this page blank. I would not be adverse if you wish to blank this comment. I myself have been somewhat confused as to the issue of the closing of my RfA. I distinctly stayed away from any campaigning, only thanking the editors who had offered their support to my nomination. Please let me attempt to assure you that all I really want to do is help the WP. I love encyclopedias, and I sincerely appreciate the experimental nature of Wikipedia (The most important online information resource). I've been lashing away at the Wikipedia:Administrators reading list trying to absorb some of the extensive information in there. I have no idea whether my administrative standing is now permanent or not, but it never hurts to gain some useful knowledge. Thanks again for your kind words. Peace! Hamster Sandwich 03:19, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey HS. Thank you for your gracious thoughts and comments. As I reorganize and archive my talk page I'll keep you out of the archive and in view for your gracious response about a dustup that really had nothing to do with your qualifications to be an admin. I endorse the outcome even though I question the process. Your new powers will benefit us all. --hydnjo talk 03:31, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

*hint hint*

[edit]

Oh where, oh where has my e-mail gone? Oh where, oh where can it be? --HappyCamper 23:45, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes? --HappyCamper 01:17, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. --HappyCamper 04:33, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Although my RfA is not over yet, I figured that since so many people voted before it had been posted, I may as well start thanking people before it wraps up. It'll take me that long to thank everyone who voted anyway! Thank you, Hydnjo, for your support - I'll do my best as an admin to make the reality rise to the level of the dream. Continuity, browserbars, the future of Wikipedia, and everything...

[edit]

Hi, what's up?

We can have an uninterrupted coversation right here.

I appreciate your concern in regards to main namespace articles and the browser bar. That part of the project was definitely experimental. Though the bar doesn't seem to be ruffling any (many) feathers in portal space, and none so far in category space. There are a few lists of lists, in main namespace, at the top of the list hierarchy, that I don't think anyone would mind the bar going on, but I don't intend to fight over placement, as long as they're locals. The goal was to place the thing at the top two levels of hierarchy and leave it at that. I have no intention nor desire to spread it any deeper than that.

By the way, in case you are wondering how the main namespace pages were chosen, they were listed on the Browse by overview page.

I'm getting kind of burnt out on the browserbar project -- too monotonous, too many hours of mindless repitition. I've got to get in some quality article editing time. If and when I do pick it up again, it will likely be concentrated on category namespace.

Thanks for your feedback. Go for it! 04:01, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Homework

[edit]

I'v just been to the reference desk and you seem to assume a lot of questions to be homework ones. I'm sure you don't mean to, but your responses appear to be less than friendly. You can avoid that by just ignoring those questions, or simply help them on their way with how to find the answer (aka Google). (I hope I'm not offending you :) ). - Mgm|(talk) 20:04, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mgm, thanks for calling that to my attention, Sunday afternoons seem to be the most blatant. I'm at a tug o' war as to what would be most helpful to these "kids", an answer, a pointer or a lecture. Geesh! Your thoughts? --hydnjo talk 21:27, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd say a pointer is the most helpful. It teaches them you have to try yourself and not expect others to do your work for you (and to ask better and more detailed questions). If they tell: "I've searched google, Wikipedia and several books and I still can't find it." and if they give details on how they did so, I'd be more inclined to provide an answer. Pointing them to the right page or book, but still requiring them to read themselves or mook inferences will still teach them something. Lectures and answers don't work. Lectures makes them hostile, answers make them lazy. - Mgm|(talk) 21:41, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well thank you, that seems a sensible approach. I'll try to (grrr...) keep that in mind. --hydnjo talk 22:00, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If by my keystrokes I'm not helping well, that's worse than doing nothing at all. hydnjo talk 23:51, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

day headers at reference desk

[edit]

Hi - Just thought I'd let you know that user:AllyUnion runs several bots (like user:NekoDaemon) that do periodic maintenance tasks like adding per-day headers to various articles. I'm nearly positive he'd be willing to add reference desk header creation to one of them. -- Rick Block (talk) 01:22, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas!

... to the both of you as well. Thank you for, well, for bein' you. I'm glad to know you're in the world. :) - Brian Kendig 04:44, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll make that a triple helping. Just relaxing online before hitting the sack and I saw your wonderful note (pun intended). Merry Christmas! Love you guys. - Lucky 6.9 06:22, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Another thanks for the note. Hope you're having a wonderful Christmas. -- Rick Block (talk) 00:59, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

:-) It seems every second or third dab page I see falls short of the style guide. I've been fixing a few. -- Kevin Ryde 21:05, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why is there no linkage to these newcomer friendly pages? --hydnjo talk 19:23, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, here is what I've just learned or have done:

  • The FAQs link leads to the RD/reference desk ("Find out how to ask a question" is the very first item on there).
  • Both the Help Desk and the Reference Desk are presented under the 4th heading in the table of contents of the main help file: Help:Contents#Asking questions.
  • I've added a link to the top of the FAQ page for the Help Desk.
  • I've added links to the Help Desk and to the Help Portal in the See Also section of the FAQ page.
  • I've added a link to the Help Desk at the top of the main help page, the page that is listed as ("Help" on the navigation menu), which is on the user's screen at all times.

Does this solve the problem to your satisfaction? Go for it! 20:41, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we'll see how the desks do without the current linkage from the Main Page. Thanks for your response, hydnjo talk 01:25, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reference desk

[edit]

What do you think about the proposal to split the reference desk? --HappyCamper 21:55, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So what does that mean? Yay or nay? I know you do the date headers, just like how I do the archiving...I'm a bit weary of having to do some more extra pages, but I'm still thinking about it. --HappyCamper 01:53, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot figure out what you are saying from your cryptic posts! :-) --HappyCamper 15:07, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hydnjo - my space is your space, and you are always welcome to post whatever your heart desires on my talk page - including interesting and colourful posts. Actually, I have been meaning to learn how to do HTML, and from your posts, I now know how to make coloured text! :-) Yes, I see what you mean...I have not decided what to do with the RD actually. I think I'm just going to let the discussion take over and see what happens. --HappyCamper 19:11, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You, mister, need a good dose of Vitamin C I think :-) --HappyCamper 19:21, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Truce

[edit]

Ok, truce! Being an intellectual depressive, I was getting to addicted to this. Still, I think the bicycle thing was a college joke, and we need a standard way to re-emphasize the Reference Desk pre-amble. For example, if somebody asks 'Give me the properties of the Sun', then I just can't say CLICK HERE ====> Sun --Zeizmic 13:03, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind proofreading something for me?

[edit]

I'm thinking about requesting adminship, and have written a draft of my request. I would appreciate it if you would proofread it for me, and let me know what you think on its talk page. Thank you. Sincerely, --Go for it! 23:43, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: I've made a combined version of "Ask a question" and the "FAQ" page, which is currently being tested on the browsebar all around Wikipedia, and on the main page redesign draft. I took the 2 entries from the main page's browsebar and combined them into one: "Questions". Have you taken a look at that file. Please let me know what you think. It saves space, and ensures that FAQs and Ask a question will remain prominently referenced on the main page. I've inserted the browsebar below for your convenience. --Go for it! 23:43, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, it's 6B

[edit]

Sorry I didn't think to identify which one it was on my user page. Thanks for pointing that out to me. It's fixed now. --Go for it! 01:12, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving

[edit]

Good point, but I'd gotten the impression the Reference Desk archive was supposed to be a bit more than that. I'd gotten the impression it was supposed to be either a way for people to get their questions answered without having to ask, or a Best Of album of fascinating facts for people to peruse. It is neither right now. Was my impression wrong? Black Carrot 02:45, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page Drafts

[edit]

I've added links on each draft to all of the other drafts, it's really the only way to make comparisons. If you think this is stupid then let me know, otherwise I'll keep it up. hydnjo talk 03:42, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent idea. And you used the direct approach. Even better. --Go for it! 05:23, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An aside

[edit]

I'm a Red Dwarf fan, and a term used by its authors which applies to your username is "gestalt entity". They used it to describe the pseudonym on the "Red Dwarf" tv series and books, the author "Grant Naylor", which is an amalgamation of the actual authors' names "Rob Grant" and "Doug Naylor". I've never met a gestalt entity before! --Go for it! 05:36, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huh, hydnjo is a "gestalt entity"? I have no clue whatsoever. I'm at a loss - help? hydnjo talk 06:31, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Hydnjo" is a nym, not a real name. That is, not a name of a person. More than that, it isn't even a nym of a person. It represents multiple people (Heidi and Joe), so metaphorically it can be referred to as a gestalt entity, which is how Rob Grant and Doug Naylor referred to their collective pseudonym Grant Naylor, the name they jointly wrote under. They were indirectly referring to the fictional character named "Legion" from Episode 2, Season 6, of their BBC TV series named Red Dwarf who became a gestalt entity of the members of the crew of the Jupiter Mining Corporation ore transport vessel Red Dwarf (a spaceship the size of a city, run by a computer named Holly with an IQ of 6000, the same IQ as 6000 PE teachers). --Go for it! 07:57, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

rd question

[edit]

thanks for the prompt reply at the RD. There's still one more thing I don't understand if you could help explaining that to me(see talk page for question). Thanks!--Urthogie 16:54, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

you got it, thanks.--Urthogie 18:02, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Small Font

[edit]

My signature has all the appropriate tags. If you discovered that it happened after my signature, it's probably because somehow or other, one of the </font> or tags got removed in the editing of the discussion page. Thanks for the heads up, though. drumguy8800 - speak? 22:08, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

lowercase

[edit]

I've edited your user and user talk pages to remove them from a category intended for actual articles. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 13:12, Jan. 30, 2006

No need to apologize, I just happened to look in the articles' category and notice an overwhelming quantity of userpages, so I decided to be bold and create a category for similarly titled userpages and change a bunch of other people's userpages. I figure one benefit of this is, if and when the software allows for titles with a lowercase first letter to separately exist, somebody might be able and willing to rename a bunch of users as well, who knows. I'm not sure what you mean by the second question. On your user page, I simply changed "lowercase" to "lowercase-user" which is a different template, and populates a different category. I hope this answers what you were meaning to ask. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 22:27, Jan. 30, 2006

I've changed the link. Thanks for the advice. I reasoned that experienced users already knew to use the tab link at the top and decided to seize the moment for educating inexperienced ones. I now see that it's also a matter of convenience. Superm401 - Talk 03:32, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
