To ensure that you cite/reference correctly

[edit]

A book page should be cited by using the sfn template

{{sfn|author|year|p=page number}}

(two pp for more then one page). No more then three pages at once should be listed within one of those. I'm telling you this so you don't commit the same mistake as has been done at the Thomas Sankara and the Burkinabe Women's Liberation Movement which, according to WP standards, is unreferenced and could be deleted. --TIAYN (talk) 10:23, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sankara.[1]

  1. ^ something & something, p. 9.

[edit]

Hi HunterTharp. I looked over your proposed revisions of the Thomas Sankara article, and for the most part they look good. I do have a few suggestions though.

  • You should use citation templates for your references. If you look at the top of the edit window (the place you type text after you hit 'edit') you should see the word 'Cite' on the toolbar. Click on that, selected appropriate template from the drop-down menu, and fill it in as best you can. Doing that creates a better formatted reference, and one that it easier to maintain in the long run.
  • This is problematic because of the way that it is sourced.
    This success meant Sankara had not only shifted his country into food self-sufficiency but had in turn created a food surplus. Subsistence farmers were now able to grow cash crops, namely cotton as well as enough food to feed their family. This skyrocketed Burkina Faso into one of the top cotton producers in the world where they still stand today. <ref>{{Index Mundi. "Cotton Production by Country." 2014.Web. <http://www.indexmundi.com/agriculture/?commodity=cotton>.}}</ref>

This is going to fall afoul of Wikipedia's policy on original research - basically, you're using a source (on cotton production) to draw a novel conclusion. Yes, it's a reasonable conclusion to draw (the policy is really there to keep people from drawing unreasonable conclusions) but it would be much better to either find another source that says this, or simply to leave out that statement.

In addition, words like "skyrocketed" aren't the best encyclopaedic language. It goes beyond a simple statement of fact and adds an opinion - "hey, this is a big deal".

  • Finally, some of your paragraphs end without a reference. It's best to conclude paragraphs with references.

If there's anything else I can help with, please let me know. I hope you enjoy contribution to Wikipedia, and keep it up after the class is over. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:06, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
