Languages

[edit]

Well thats funny, because i beleive the same thing, but until the day comes that our population is high enough to exceed all these other languages, and until extensive longterm research is done, then we should just stick to popular opinions and conventional data. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by R9tgokunks (talkcontribs) 02:36, 20 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I personally can say that ALOT of people in German&Dutch Europe speak english, and due to the extreme similatries and closeness of German to Dutch to English, id say half the population knows english there.-- Hrödberäht 02:38, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

changing data without sources

[edit]

Hi,

In wikipedia information is meant to be verifiable and have reliable sources. Your edits giving English 754 million speakers are neither of these. If you wish to change the number of speakers of English, please either give a credible reference, or try to justify your decision on the talk page first.

Thanks, Drmaik 05:28, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your reply. You do give reasons to increase the number, fair enough, but nowhere do you justify the 754 million figure. The list of countries by English-speaking population seems reasonably well referenced (I haven't checked in detail), and could be used as a basis (with something on talk first), but if you want to base something on that, don't add in European Union, which mainly counts the already present speakers in UK and Ireland.
