US 'second rate' soccer
[edit]A judgement as to whether the US soccer leagues are 'second rate' compared to the FA Premier League could perhaps be based on the question - how much would it cost to buy the entire league, and does that approach as much as Glazer spent on Manchester United? CBS Sportsline stated recently that US MLS franchise values are said to be worth $10-$20 million. Glazer spent $1.47 billion for a 75 percent interest in Manchester United [1]. Second rate is perhaps a generous description... Average Earthman 19:11, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Copyvio
[edit]Wow, this is going fast :) I note you opposed the copyvio proposal because it didn't mention public domain. See, this is why we usually don't do this by poll - the obvious answer is that the phrasing needs work and that it should specifically exclude PD resources. So please take a second look and tell us if you'd agree. Radiant_>|< 23:20, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for reminder
[edit]- It is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thanks! Regards, howcheng [ t c w e ] 01:05, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your reminder, howcheng. Unfortunately Wikipedia's recent refresh/upload difficulties have made me start using the "Save" rather than "Preview" button too often. I will work to undo this habit. Best wishes, David Kernow 01:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't quite agree with your tagging of Deepmix for speedy deletion based on it being only an external link. It is quite short, but it does tell us it's a radio station. Enochlau 23:50, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your vote
[edit]I noticed that you voted for my RFA, and then subsequently removed it. As far as I know, votes are valid as long as the RFA is not closed, so feel free to restore your vote should the mood strike you. =) → Ξxtreme Unction {yakłblah} 17:31, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- That's fine. However, you may want to reconsider making it a seperate section, since it will give the appearance of you having voted after the discussion was closed, whenever it gets closed. You might modify it so that your vote appears in the list with everyone elses, and simply add "This vote was added after the deadline, but before the debate was closed." to your comments. Just a thought. → Ξxtreme Unction {yakłblah} 17:40, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

A RFA Thank You Note to clutter up your talk page...
[edit]Howcheng:
This is a bit redundant in your case, given my earlier note, but I just wanted to drop you a note to say thanks for supporting me in my recent RFA. I succeeded with a final tally of 46/13/2, and have been promoted to admin. I will strive to justify your confidence in me.
All the best.

AFD closure
[edit]I saw that you "closed" the AFD discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bra boys from the related article after it was open for less than 24h. What was the reason for this? --Zigger «º» 19:06, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- I do disagree, based on my opinions that AFD is about consensus not voting, and the objections about lack of notability and related "stubbiness" have not been addressed. --Zigger «º» 19:15, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. Hopefully we'll get some progress beyond "me too" soon. --Zigger «º» 19:57, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

News from Esperanza
[edit]Hello, fellow Esperanzians! This is just a friendly reminder that elections for Administrator General and two advisory council positions have just begun. Voting will last until Friday, December 30, so make sure you exercise your right to vote! Also, I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Esperanza mailing list. I urge all members to join; see Wikipedia:Esperanza/Contact for more information. All you need to do is email me and I will activate your account. This will be a great way to relax, stay in touch, and hear important announcements. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?)

Moe Epsilon's RFA
[edit]Hi there Howcheng. I contacted you over my RFA. Im sorry if you took anything personally in what I said on the previous version of my user page. I was just mad. As I posted on my current RFA, I am Bipolar and most of the time I can't control the rage I feel. I wasn't trying to hurt anyone's feelings or even Mcfly85's, if you can believe that, at all. I understand your reasoning to oppose my RFA but even if I dont succeed as admin this is still one of my best Wikipedia days I ever had. Mcfly85 has finally been caught. It was perfect there. But, after that, I was renominated to total shock. Im even surprised I got this many support votes. I hope you dont have anything taken personally against me because I don't against you. Also just to let you know, Mcfly85 took off the deletion mark off his vote, is he allowed to do that? — Moe ε 03:28, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
RfAr against Mcfly85
[edit]I've brought a WP:RfAr against Mcfly85, and out of abundance of caution, I'm notifying you, even though I am the one bringing it (to try to get a quick ruling from the ArbCom) and Mcfly85 is the defendant. Please make a statement if you wish. --Nlu (talk) 04:24, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Relisting RFAs
[edit]Greetings, Howard. I hope this evening (or morning, or whatever) finds you well.
I'm closing out the remaining debates for the AfD of December 9th, and I notice that you've relisted at least one discussion, that of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Claudia Ellquist. Good work there, and well-spotted. You'll be an admin yet, assuming you want the Mop and Bucket.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that when you relist an article, you want to remove the AfD discussion from the old AfD logs. The easiest way I've found to do this is to simply comment it out, like so. And then leave an edit summary saying something to the effect of 'Relisting such-and-such article on December 18' or whatever. Otherwise, if you don't remove it, other folks who are closing out AfD discussions may not notice that it's been relisted, and may close it out before a consensus develops. (I did exactly this very thing with the first AFD discussion I ever closed out. Had to re-open it 10 minutes later when I figured out what was going on. That was embarassing...)
Anyhow, keep up the good work, and thanks for the help.
→ Ξxtreme Unction|yakkity yak 02:09, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, my first day of closing AFDs, I didn't remove the listings from the old AFD pages or put them on the current AFD pages.
- Oops.
- And they gave me sysop status anyways! THE FOOLS! MWAHAHA...
- ...but perhaps I've said too much.
- Anyhow, hard to believe that was less than a month ago. You learn a lot once you have the Mop and Bucket. → Ξxtreme Unction|yakkity yak 13:42, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Poll on "Expansion of CSD A7"
[edit]Since you posted this poll to the Village Pump, how long do you think it will run for? It seems to be at about 75% yes/no, which more consenus than previous attempts to improve A7.... but it also looks like the discussion is still active. Jamie (talk/contribs) 13:03, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Moe Epsilon RFA
[edit]I want you to see the comment under the "comments" section I left at My RFA. It partially involves you. — Moe ε 22:42, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
About relisted AFDs...
[edit]I know you want to generate more discussion on AFDs hence you're relisting them, but is that such a good idea. You're cluttering up the new AFD list with no less then 25 old ones daily and now the AFD list is going well over 200 AFDs a day. It's getting hard to navigate them all with the relists of old ones in addition to the new ones.Gateman1997 21:01, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- That is the rub isn't it. I believe there is a place on AFD for "older" discussions if I'm not mistaken. AFDs don't have to be closed after 5 days, and could be put there for a while. I've noticed that most of the ones you do list are trending toward whatever the votes that preceeded the relisting were so it may be prudent in some cases to just delete them or keep them based on the few votes they have gotten. Especially the more clear cut ones like vanity articles.Gateman1997 21:53, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
More inane blather from Yours Truly
[edit]Howard:
This just occurred to me, and I thought I'd mention it: Don't close out any AFD discussions that you yourself have participated in.
This comment isn't being prompted by anything in particular, as I don't know if you've done this or not. You may have already known this for all I know. But since you're actively involved in closing out AFDs now, I figured I'd mention it, especially since you're up for RFA and any little mistake can earn you oppose votes.
All the best.

Brian Peppers
[edit]This page was already on AfD and there is a lengthy list of votes underway. The speedy deletions page says specifically:
For articles that do not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, please use Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Please do not list pages here that are already listed there.
It doesn't even meet the criteria for speedy deletion. As far as I know (can't check the history), Brian Peppers votes 1, 2, and 3 were about posting of copyrighted material. Vote 4 was about a real, original article, but the AfD was based mostly on the precedent that the article was a recreation of deleted content, and many did not realize that this new article was original and the previous AfDs were because of copyvios. Brian Peppers vote 5 is where the facts are sorted out. If you have an opinion on the matter, I invite you to vote there. --Aleron235 00:21, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Verifiability
[edit]I verify facts on a google search, should I put that in the reasoning? I.E. "Google turns up X hits, therefor verifiable, Keep"? The only problem I have with that being Google seems to give you a different "hit" number depending on which page of hits you're on "G!" I have to be honest and say I dislike the "notable" criterion so do tend to g by verifiability if possible. Jcuk 17:15, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those.
