Administrators' newsletter – August 2022

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2022).

Administrator changes

readded Valereee
removed Anthony Appleyard (deceased) • CapitalistroadsterSamsara

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
  • An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.

Technical news

  • The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
  • Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.

Miscellaneous

  • You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.
  • Wikimania 2022 is taking place virtually from 11 August to 14 August. The schedule for wikimania is listed here. There are also a number of in-person events associated with Wikimania around the world.
  • Tech tip: When revision-deleting on desktop, hold ⇧ Shift between clicking two checkboxes to select every box in that range.

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Hog Farm,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

DYK for Little Rock campaign

[edit]

On 9 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Little Rock campaign, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after the Little Rock campaign, Union forces held three-quarters of Arkansas? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Little Rock campaign. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Little Rock campaign), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your GA nomination of Battle of Front Royal

[edit]

The article Battle of Front Royal you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Battle of Front Royal for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of TwoScars -- TwoScars (talk) 14:42, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Impressive productivity—all those GAs and FAs! I'm glad you upgraded Battle of Front Royal, and the review was a learning experience for me. Cheers! BTW, I saw your issues with the Gregg photo. A few years ago, I downloaded a good photo from the Library of Congress for "J.M. Schoonmaker". After working with a museum for an article on 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, they informed me that it was really a picture of the colonel's brother. They steered me to an old book that has a correct photo of the regiment's Colonel James Martinus Schoonmaker. TwoScars (talk) 19:35, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

End of the American Civil War; Further Projects

[edit]

@Hog Farm, BusterD, Kges1901, Djmaschek, and TwoScars: I sent most of this to Two Scars, but am including him again since he was included in the Vicksburg project post. I have made the change to May 26, 1865 as the end if the war date in the American Civil War article, supported by comprehensive footnotes in the text and even additions to my talk page threads. I also made additions and changes to the End of the War section to cover all the major events at the end of the war, and prevent any objections based on them not being mentioned or being misinterpreted. Even if a little long for a section, I think it is not too long and in fact is necessary. No objections or attempted substantive changes have been made for 10 days so I think the changes and additions will hold. I probably won't revisit that article for a long time, if ever. Even though I learned some things, it took longer than it should have and that may be the theme for that article except for cosmetic or sourcing changes or additions.

I made a few small edits to Jackson Expedition Siege of Jackson and have started reading the short book on it and looking at a few sources. I have had a severe leg muscle injury, and added to other real life matters, I may not be online much for a few weeks. I should not be completely inactive but I will likely be doing things a little at a time. I will be working on the Vicksburg campaign article and related articles for the most part. Donner60 (talk) 11:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Donner60: - I've been really busy myself and haven't started either. I should be able to work on Helena this weekend, and hopefully get Big Black River Bridge and Grand Gulf in neater shape next week. I hope your leg injury heals well, that sound painful. I will try to read through that end of war section tonight after work. Hog Farm Talk 14:05, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just checking in for a minute. Thanks. It was/is painful but no blood clot showed up on a test. Good luck on your exam, noted on this or another talk page, if you have not taken it yet. I doubt if you will need luck, only preparation and some measure of confidence. I suspect you will have both. Donner60 (talk) 05:19, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 30 September 2022. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 2022, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/September 2022. Even USGS gets scammed sometimes

[edit]

If you start looking at the maps for Lena Park, Indiana, you will quickly find that, on the ground, there's nothing there, and it's one of those spots in Indiana where the name didn't get put on the map until recently. Here's the interesting thing, though: when you look at the topo maps which do have the name, they also have this little grid of streets just to the south. There are, in fact, no streets there; there certainly haven't been streets there in my lifetime, and I suspect that if there were ever streets there, it was over a century ago, because....

... the whole thing was a real estate scam. On the first page of Google results I came upon The Great Lena Park Scam of 1909. Short version: a couple guys speculating on land near Gary got caught with their pants down and tried to unload it all on unwary "settlers". The whole thing collapsed within two years, with the only structures ever built being a couple of houses, a store, and platform by the tracks, all of which seem to have evaporated almost immediately. I have to presume that the street grid on the recent topos comes from some fantasy map from the period, but why they got put on the topos when every aerial photo shows they aren't there is quite the mystery. I swuppose I should send them a correction.

At any rate, I'm not quite sure what to do with this. The linked-to article seems well-researched, but it's self-published. I also have doubts as to the notability of the matter. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as well as from @Dlthewave:, @Reywas92:, and @FOARP:. Mangoe (talk) 19:01, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article does include links to at least one news story from 6 months after the scam broke which would point to a WP:Lasting pass being possible. See if there’s other articles like that - theoretically just having two such articles could be sufficient for an article covering the event. FOARP (talk) 19:26, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I somehow cracked my laptop's touchscreen, and it us unusable because it keeps selecting things in the middle of the screen. I can't type complex code or easily copy on my phone, and complex writing or reviewing will be basically impossible for me. I'm hoping to get something sorted out within several days. i do not know if your problem has already been resolved, but have you tried disabling the touchscreen as a temporary solution? for example, this page, which appears to describe a way of doing so for windows 10 via regedit, seems promising, although i have not tested this method myself. dying (talk) 19:46, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I was gonna have a functioning computer again today, but it's apparently going to be up to another week to get it working, so I'll be limited to borrowng my wife's computer, which I hate using because it has small keys and is missing the 10-key pad. Wanna take a trip to Oklahoma?

[edit]

Howdy there.

For years now, I've had my eyes on Stand Watie, a Cherokee leader who sided with the CSA and was its last general to surrender to the US Army. He was active in your general neck of the woods, and I have some material on him, and we have yet to work together on an article... so I was wondering if you might be up to collaborating on his article sometime? –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 10:03, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Vami IV: - Sure! although it will probably have to be by the fall given work and a few prior on-wiki commitments (some FARs, Battle of Helena, and Mosby Monroe Parsons). From a quick glance at my library, Monaghan's Civil War on the Western Border, Cutrer's Theater of a Separate War, Kerby's Kirby Smith's Confederacy, and Shea and Hess's Pea Ridge: Civil War Battle in the West are likely to be useful and are books I've got print copies of. Of the sources/further reading in the article, I've got Warner. Not familiar with Cunningham but the date and subject matter don't inspire confidence in me that it's usable. Your GA nomination of USS Sidney C. Jones

[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article USS Sidney C. Jones you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Pickersgill-Cunliffe -- Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:41, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've recently made some improvements to the article and am interested in nominating it GAN. Perhaps you could look it over and give me some suggestions before I nominate it. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:25, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Doug, it'll probably be Saturday before I can do a close look-over, but I'd strongly recommend holding off on it for now. There's uncited text, the article focuses too much on the Spragg bag to the extent that the article is largely about that specific flexible barge instead of the concept as a whole, and parts of the article rely too heavily on Spragg's promotional material for his invention. I think this one will need a refocus and some better referencing before it is ready. Hog Farm Talk 20:00, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
O.K. Thanks. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:05, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Doug Coldwell, the content you added literally today is a word-for-word copy of this random guy's blog. Can you please explain that? ♠PMC(talk) 22:19, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yup. He copied me. I did not copy him.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:23, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
He copied you in 2014, on wording that wasn't in the article until today? And that WikiBlame shows has never been in the article until today? ♠PMC(talk) 22:27, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Notice the picture he is using of the Spragg bag. It's a picture I got from Terry Spragg back in 2010 as a public domain picture.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:30, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see where WikiBlame led me wrong. The phrases I searched had undergone some tweaks to wording that made it look as though they had never been in the article prior to today, but I see where you had the original wording in 2010. This one's on me. ♠PMC(talk) 22:46, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Premeditated Chaos: I can see why that happened. What I did was worked out that updating for these tweaks and expansion of lead in a sandbox and then took that final product text and dropped it in as 1 edit of 19:23 8 September 2022 and gave an edit summary of "ce". WikiBlame app then got confused of what I did. Once you researched it out you discovered that I actually had the original wording that the medical doctor Rajiv Desai copied and put on his Educational Blog in 2014. That original wording I did in 2010 must have been good as Dr. Desai has been using it for 8 years without changing a single word. Dr. Desai liked the Spragg bag picture I obtained in 2010 from Terry Spragg as a public domain picture, since he has been using the picture on this blog webpage since 2014. That's common what I do in making large edits -> I work it out first in a sandbox. This is what I have done with all the 500 articles I have created in the last 15 years. I made sure they met all the parameters for a Did You Know article that I developed out in a sandbox. Then I dropped in this large amount of text in a redlink and had as a summary "new article". Then I immediately nominated it for Did You Know. When the reviewer came by they seen it was a completely done article that was referenced properly. Of course they approved it immediately as a DYK almost every time. I created this article in 2015 this way and it became an official Did You Know on the main page 36 hours later.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 11:58, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion

[edit]

Hi there. I see you have experience working with "featured articles", and I know you frequently edit US city articles (and you seem to like cats). I wonder if I can get your advise. I've been trying to improve Minneapolis for over a year, and have had significant pushback from a small group of editors. My main issue is that the article is (and was) loaded with puffery and promos. The article is listed as a featured article, but it was reviewed back in 2007, and I don't think it meets the criteria anymore. I certainly don't want to use the "featured article review" process as a means of resolving countless content disputes, but I would like to bring more eyes to this article so it can be improved. I've never initiated a featured article review, and would appreciate your input as the whether this would be of benefit. Thanks very much. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:23, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Magnolia677: - I don't have time to give the article a read-through til probably Monday or so, but I do remember Wikipedia:Featured article review/History of Minnesota/archive1 had some issues with boosterism/puffery. A FAR would likely lead to article improvements and hopefully get several sets of experienced FA eyes on the article (although if stuff fizzles out it would be delisted for FA status like with history of Minnesota linked above). It's not a good place for dispute resolution, but that's not what you're trying to do. If you do bring it to FAR, in the FAR statement just provide a brief summary of issues and how they compare to the featured article criteria. A FAR would have to wait until at least three weeks after the first substantive unaddressed concerns were mentioned on article talk, though. I'll try to provide some more detailed information later, but I'm short on time now. Hog Farm Talk 13:49, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, you guys. Magnolia677, I would suggest that your mention of FAR here is strategic and ill-timed. Hog Farm, for your information, SandyGeorgia worked with me at length on Minneapolis and signed off a year ago when she said Overall, I suggest this article will benefit from renewed vetting at FAR, but believe that can wait until you have time to deal with it; I don't believe the article is in such shape that it is in danger of someone else submitting a precipitous FAR. May I please suggest that we kindly relax a bit from FAR today, and ask Magnolia677 to first finish up disputes at Talk:Minneapolis and WP:DRN? -SusanLesch (talk) 17:46, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hog Farm, thank you for your advice. As well, User:Netherzone recently tackled some of the content here at Arts in Minneapolis. I'll learn more about the FAR process, and would appreciate if you could look at the article. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:34, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
s SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:25, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Darn it! Where did my response go? Damn reply tool. Will re-do. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:26, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello all, Netherzone here. I came across Arts in Minneapolis while working on improvements to visual arts articles. I have to admit, I found the promotional tone to be unencyclopedic and cringeworthy. I assumed that it had been "boosterized" by the Chamber of Commerce or the like, so I cleaned up the puffery and promo-tone. After cleaning up, Magnolia asked on my TP if I'd have a look at some of the other Minneapolis articles. My analysis is that they have the same tone. I feel strongly that we are not here to convince the world how great a place, person or (fill in the blank) is, but to provide a neutral point of view on any given subject. I've worked with Magnolia a few years back on some articles on Indigenous persons; while we disagreed (we were actually on polar opposite sides in numerous AfDs), I always found Magnolia to be professional, courteous, kind and polite. After the AfD's were over, we worked together on an article peacefully with mutual respect - so I was pretty surpised to hear about this dispute. As far at the current issues, I am happy to help clean up the other Minneapolis articles, but...spoiler alert...if I do I would want to clean up the puffery and promotional tone. I don't think Susan and I have crossed paths before, and I would not want to step on any toes nor give the impression that I am taking sides. If my working on the other Minneapolis articles would escalate tensions, well there are lots of other things to work on in the 'pedia. As to the FA issue, maybe let it wait for a few weeks before diving in so tensions can relax a bit? Netherzone (talk) 21:14, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Netherzone, it is absolutely correct that an excessively promotional tone dominates (dominated ?) across most Minnesota articles ... I just don't know if Minneapolis still does. Have a good look at this little gem before I did some partial cleanup (more needed still). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:23, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS, I would not be surprised if UMN has hired help. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:24, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Starting over. Susan, at some point in time, the article will benefit by coming to FAR. Whether now is the right time I can't say, as I have not peeked at the article for ... I can't remember now, but ... at least quite some months. I don't have and won't have for quite a while now time to look. At some point in the past I did record on article talk my views on Magnolia's intense focus on images over content, and how that was derailing content progress. I hope Magnolia's intent now is not to bring the article to FAR as a form of dispute resolution focused on images rather than a constructive list of improvements needed. My suggestion is that, if there are still considerable content issues, those should be listed on talk and Susan given the time to work on them. The situation at this article is quite different from History of Minnesota, where the original nominator was either unwilling or unable to work on improvements; in this case, SusanLesch is, so should the article come to FAR, it will be there for many months as improvements happen, so it may be more effective to work on them on talk rather than via FAR, only bringing the FAR once the list has been addressed or not. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:31, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And with apologies for the piecemeal response as I lost my original response, Magnolia's editing veered at times into what looked like hounding of SusanLesch; I hope that has not continued. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:33, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@SandyGeorgia: The last I heard from you was last February at Talk:Minneapolis/Archive 8#Owamni continued, where I questioned the addition of this promo for a local restaurant: "Sherman and Dana Thompson in 2021 opened Owamni by The Sioux Chef, overlooking Saint Anthony Falls (Dakota: Owámniyomni, to reanimate Native American cuisine and decolonize indigenous food." Your dismissive comment was that Magnolia "misunderstands various aspects of Wikipedia editing"...not...why the hell are you adding the names of two non-notable owners; who is "The Sioux Chef"; why do readers need to know what the restaurant looks out on; why have you translated the name of a waterfall into another language; how do you "reanimate" and "decolonize" food? I must be misunderstanding things. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:38, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't going to engage you then on article talk, and I'm not going to engage you now about an article on another editor's talk; I suspect it would be a timesink in either case. A fresh look at the article is in order next, and where it was a year ago is no longer relevant. My recommendation is to focus on collaborative editing and avoid combative or confrontational editing. When/if you don't understand another editor's comments or edits, WP:AGF is your friend; sometimes people make mistakes, and honey draws more flies than vinegar. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:49, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Where it was a year ago" is exactly where it still is! Look at the article's talk page. I tried to remove that exact same promo last week, but User:SusanLesch objected. Look at the article's talk page and the Herculean effort I have made to make that article sound more like a Wikipedia article and less like a webpage from the local tourist board. All this unencyclopedic bragging about "this chef and their fancy awards" does nothing to improve the article for readers. I've tried to collaborate but it's not working. Time to try something else. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:10, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned above, I don't have time to be drawn in to this now (or for several weeks). If what you say is the case, it will be best addressed by making a comprehensive list of issues on article talk, allowing time for them to be worked through, and approaching FAR in a few weeks to months if they are not. At the point I last looked, there was not a comprehensive list of broad issues unless it came from me, rather a focus on issues that frankly were of very limited importance in the grand scheme of WP:WIAFA leading up to the FAR (which this article will need and should have eventually because of its age). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:16, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Magnolia677, per your talk page, kindly settle at WP:DRN. A volunteer waited for you today. Hog Farm, sorry to clutter your talk page. Best wishes to everybody. -SusanLesch (talk) 23:36, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean this one, where you referred to the overwhelming consensus at this RfC--which I used to removed a truckload of promos from the article--as "an obscure RfC from November 2021". Did you see the editors who participated in that RfC? They are some of the most experienced editors of US city articles, and they overwhelmingly agreed not to include this unecyclopedic puffery (User:Robert McClenon called it "crud")...and you disagree and want to add it all back. Am I missing something? Magnolia677 (talk) 23:54, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

HF, good news, the fundraiser I've been working on is going great. Bad-good news; we're extending it another week. Meanwhile, while reading through Apple News on my iPad, lo and behold:

Correction to previous election announcement

Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:41, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article Battle of Helena you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Battle of Helena for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. I'm back, but needing to re-prime the engine, having lost track of FAR over the last two weeks. Is there any particular place I need to start or anything important I've missed? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:57, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in the same boat - RL got busy for me. John's started work at Josquin, I'm hoping to get to HD soon, and it looks like RFK is finally about to find down to a resolution. Aside from that, I haven't seen much that happened. No FARs closed this go-round, and only a couple new ones opened. Hog Farm Talk 17:04, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thx, HF; I'll start wading in from the top then. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:27, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

September 2022

[edit]

From your listing at FAC mentors, you are listed for possible interest in Historic sites and Civil War articles. James Madison's estate is the Historic site of Montpelier and he was a top Ante-bellum president. For the past several months, I've been editing the president's article for James Madison, and have made a successful GAN promotion. After the successful GAN promotion, the article then had a nice GOCE copy editing done by a good reviewer which enhanced it more, with another separate peer review as well. Any interest for you to possibly be a co-nominator or mentor for FAC nomination for this article? ErnestKrause (talk) 00:48, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ErnestKrause: - I'd be willing to do a GA mentorship, although I'm probably gonna be fairly busy this week so looking through it would have to be after that. From a quick skim of the works cited, I don't have any of the books used with me, although I might be able to borrow Langguth. I do have two books on the War of 1812 that I could consult. My guess is that with over 10,000 words of readable prose, you're going to need to trim the length down a bit, so when I read through it I'll look for specific instances. Hog Farm Talk 01:49, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The James Madison article is already at GA-level for several months now after its promotion. This request is for either mentorship or co-nomination for Featured Article Candidate only. I'm also a student of the history of the War of 1812 and would look forward to hearing your comments about it. ErnestKrause (talk) 11:19, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I meant FA but just made a typo. Hog Farm Talk 12:01, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding your concern for the size of the article, I'd looked up the FA for John Adams who is at about 175KB in total file size, and the FA for Harry Truman who is at about 208KB in size; that seems larger than the James Madison article currently at about 115Kb total file size. ErnestKrause (talk) 17:16, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Truman was promoted 10 years ago, and Adams in 2018. I doubt either would pass today, due to the length. Neither is a great example to follow. I'll try to start on going through the sources on Sunday or Monday. Hog Farm Talk 17:56, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead with the FAC nomination now for James Madison, and Vana has asked me to check if you might be able to make some support/oppose comments at FAC after your improvement comments in the pre-FAC? ErnestKrause (talk) 23:16, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ErnestKrause: - I'm afraid not at this time. I've become extremely busy in RL and simply don't have time for much onwiki. Hog Farm Talk 01:25, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

[edit]

Although it is pretty evident now that RFK assassination would be delisted, I really want to thank you for your tremendous efforts to ensure source to text integrity across various nomination at FAR and FAC! An interesting fact which maybe you might not be aware of: while conducting spot check on on Harry S. Truman 1948 presidential campaign, you asked me "where is Bean mentioned in the source". That led me to research more about him, create an article, take it to DYK, GA, and now it has been promoted FA! So it wouldn't be wrong to say that you are single-handedly responsible for the article's creation! Thank you! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 11:01, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election voting closing soon

[edit]

Voting for the upcoming project coordinator election closes soon, at 23:59 on 28 September. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. Voting is conducted using simple approval voting and questions for the candidates are welcome. The voting itself is occurring here If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 20:13, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've always been of the opinion that it's ok to close as withdrawn even if I'm involved, because it's essentially noncontroversial maintenance. If the nom states desire to withdraw there is no reason it would be kept open by any coord. (t · c) buidhe 01:31, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical Cyclone

[edit]

I'm going to try and get back at chipping away at tropical cyclone since I may get time here and there and my burnout has ended. I finished writing the intensity section finally. I guess I will focus now on shoring up the observation and forecasting section. I'm not sure how you feel about observation itself (I believe it is sufficient as is), but I can say that the forecasting subsection is missing details on rainfall and storm surge forecasting, which are important. After that I likely could start working on the structure portion and possibly get it complete by year's end. That would still leave a significant amount of work to do next year though. NoahTalk 00:23, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricane Noah: - I've been pretty swamped myself. I have little-to-no background knowledge to judge completeness of the observation section but can try to take a look at it later this week. Hog Farm Talk 02:15, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here we have a weird one. It's not a town, it was never a town; I'm not at all sure that it even dates back to 1900. It's really a truck stop sort of place which the owner tried at one point to sell as a "ghost town" via Craigslist. It also gets some mention because a pair of fugitives holed up there in 1986; interestingly, the article I found on that described the place as a truck stop.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. The various articles on the attempted sale took the description for granted (it isn't as though they drove out to see for themselves), but any actual checking shows that it was never a town. The best source on it is a website put up by the owners at the time of the sale, which is never a good sign. Nobody makes any attempt to describe a town of which a gas station, motel, garage, and house were eventually a part. But I'm sure that if I put it up for deletion, people will point at the flash of publicity as sufficient for notability. But if I rewrite the article, I really don't want to describe it as a ghost town because it was not and is not. Any ideas? Mangoe (talk) 23:46, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My instinct would be to just to enumerate what all was there at various time, while avoiding calling it a town. this obnoxiously calls it a ghost town because the seller was, but at least it down a good job of enumerating exactly what was there. I agree an AFD would probably be pointless because of the publicity-stunt sale. "Cabin Creek is a location in ..." is probably the best route. I'd say avoid "town" and just note how the sources describe it as a truck stop, RV park, and two houses on 5 acres all owned by the same guy and the nature of the place would be pretty clear to readers. Reminds a bit of Uranus, Missouri which falls under the category of "one guy's business but people pretend it's a town". Hog Farm Talk 03:22, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

[edit]

Hello Hog Farm,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.

I’ve a suspicion you’ve already done so, but if you haven’t, could you take a gander at this user’s contributions. Looks well-written and sourced, but you can never be too sure with Civil War stuff, and my strength more pre-war history. Thanks! Grey Wanderer (talk) 21:57, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Grey Wanderer: - I've reviewed the changes made to Sterling Price and Missouri secession and think both represent improvements. The prior wording of the articles had ignored the fact that Price and the militia wanted to seize the weapons for pro-Confederate purposes, instead suggesting that the attempt to take the United States arsenal was needed to protect the arsenal from pro-Union and United States forces. At least in those to articles, the contributions are a definite improvement. Hog Farm Talk 14:21, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
