Reasons for Restoring this page

[edit]

(1) Line graphs are useful for visualizing the current situation especially in the last 4 weeks before the election

(2) All graph data is taken from Nationwide opinion polling for the United States presidential election, 2008.

(3) Until September 8, 2008 there were a number of charts done by another party on this page, but they had not been modified since late 2007. I therefore had been using links to reference all my charts so as to not clutter and confuse the page. I had been hesitant to delete someone else's work, being new to Wikipedia, but finally did so, clearing the accuracy warnings at the top of the page. Here are volumes since then:

Page Views and Visitors, Sep 6 - Oct 5, 2008

[edit]

(4) Since the viewers were finding the pages alright, I left my work all as links as it seemed clean and workable. I was unaware of the Wikipedia policy on the use of links.

(5) I have now loaded a few of the charts (there are 50+ total) on to the page, the others still as links as they would tend to increase clutter on the page.

(6) I have expended hundreds of hours on this project since October 2007. I may be biased being an American, but I think this election is the most important of my lifetime.

(7) My plea, I guess, is that you allow the page to exist for the next 4 weeks, then perhaps shut it down, as my job will be done.

  • Hi HKball, sorry for the lateness of my reply. I've been a bit busy in real life. Nice work on the graphs, by the way. I've thought a bit about your article and I guess I've softened my opinion a bit. I am not entirely comfortable with articles that consist of little but graphs or external links, or have a use-by date, but I've decided not to object too much. I assume you've got all those graphs up on an external website? If so, can I suggest a compromise: that you include the most important two or three graphs in an appropriate article, and then link to your website in an external links section. Good to hear from you Reyk :)) ... yes, all on external links, will do as you suggest, there are 7-8 charts I still update day-to-day, will include those, link to all others ... my plan now is to firm up the page a bit more, then click on the link at the top of this page, save into the replacement page, then copy this 'reasons' page into the discussion section of the new replaced page ... I assume that if the replacement page turns out to be OK that someone else will take care of the links from other wiki pages to this one, if not, I can do that ... what think thee ?? Yo Reyk,

The replacement graphics article is now in place, and the 'reasons' are loaded into the discussion page.

Am assuming the replacement article is OK, have just now restored the link to the page in Nationwide opinion polling for the United States presidential election, 2008
