Hong Kong, British Empire

Dear HkCaGu, I edited Ma Ying-Jeou's birthplace as "Hong Kong, Brisih Empire" because I think we should be really specific here in writing encyclopedia. Hong Kong is a geographical/political area which had undergone several different administration, which I can list out in general:

  • Qing Dynasty (...-1842), Hong Kong was still part of Guangdong Province of Qing Dynasty.
  • British Empire (1842-1941), it became part of British Empire since it was ceded by the government of Qing Dynasty to the British.
  • Japanese Empire (1941-1945), it became part of Japanese Empire when Japan conquered most of East Asia and South East Asia.
  • British Empire (1945-1997), it again became part of British Empire when the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II.
  • People's Republic of China (1997-...), it was returned back to motherland China by the British.

Ma Ying-Jeou was born in the year 1950, in which Hong Kong was part of British Empire at that time. =) chongkian (talk), January 20 2009

After World War II, so many colonies became independent that it was not an empire anymore. The correct term for the country would be "United Kingdom", but Hong Kong was not part of the kingdom--it only belonged to the kingdom. HkCaGu (talk) 21:20, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
So, any other better terminology or area name? Cuz we cant just put 'Hong Kong' like that. It looks like as if Hong Kong is an independent state, which is never in HK's entire life. Even in international events, Hong Kong is (mostly) always written as "Hong Kong, China" or "Hong Kong, PRC" to show that HK is not an independent state. chongkian (talk), January 23 2009 —Preceding undated comment was added at 07:17, 23 January 2009 (UTC).
Due to Hong Kong's special history, the most appropriate and common notation is simply "Hong Kong", which is the most non-controverial form. The next most acceptable form is "British Hong Kong". In Ma Ying-jeou's case, I say just "Hong Kong" because whether it was British or not has no bearing in his life. HkCaGu (talk) 08:04, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Re:List of Area Control Centers

You may well be right. I don't know enough about the subject to help, but I've added {{Expert-verify}} to it and added a comment on the talk page, which will hopefully get someone who does know to have a look at it. Grutness...wha? 23:26, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Airport offices

An airline is certainly a notable company, so why wouldn't office operations in a CBD be, by extension, notable? Usually the operations coincide or at one point coincided with passenger and/or cargo operations at a nearby airport. Also things can be of relative importance to a municipality or an area. It's a similar reason for why I am listing consulates and offices of other foreign companies in CBDs and small towns. However I could be willing to draw the line by not including travel agency offices that represent airlines. Is that fine? WhisperToMe (talk) 17:15, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

"By extension" is going way too far. How many other notable companies are in Central, Hong Kong or Manhattan, New York? If IBM employs 20,000 people in Odessa, Texas, it is notable. A firm that occupied several floors in New York's WTC was notable. A small company office (no matter how big the company) is not. Learn your lesson on Guam and please review WP:NOTDIR and WP:NOTGUIDE. And please, know what you know and know what you don't know--this principle has helped me here at Wikipedia to know when not to argue or get into a revert war and prevented me of getting too busy and turning into a robot. HkCaGu (talk) 17:33, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
1. "By extension" may not be necessarily - Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) says something about not making articles about every McDonald's chain restaurant in existence, but it doesn't really say whether branch offices of companies should be mentioned.
2. I don't see how anything related to Guam post offices relates to this. In that scenario it was the USPS's fault for not making better listings.
3. I reviewed NOTGUIDE and I don't see how any of the material relates to this.
4. NOTDIR's main example is a list of programming and current schedules for a radio station as an example - I'm not sure if this neatly falls into that example

What I'll do is I'll ask the WikiProject Aviation for some opinions on how offices of airlines could be mentioned. I don't see a problem in clarifying stuff and/or adding to the WikiProject guidelines. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:55, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Let me give you two more points: WP:RELEVANCE and WP:UNDUE. A street address alone already has to prove its relevance and how it is not GUIDE. (For example, you won't get an answer on Guam with a street address, but if you say "Post Office", everyone can point you there.) At airports, we can mention the check-in counters and the way they are named/labeled/lettered, but match that with individual airlines, that's GUIDE. It's relevant to mention the destinations, airlines and terminals because it's how you portray an airport. It is not relevant, however, to portray a city with the smallest office in town. Everybody comes to a small town or small neighborhood for visa for a certain country because the consulate is there--that's notable. But a listing of consulates in the articles for "San Francisco" is not--or be it embassies for DC--since they are expected to be there.
And I can't see why WP:AVIATION has jurisdiction for airline offices. HkCaGu (talk) 18:37, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Alright...
1. Regarding WP:UNDUE - This is why a smaller office is at one sentence apiece. More significant operations like Japan Airlines in El Segundo have more written about them and therefore take more space. Relevance is self-explanatory, but I have the belief that such offices are relevant.
2. Regarding directory-like stuff regarding listing, I ran into that when campaigning for good article status for Gulfton, Houston and Bellaire, Texas - it's not that addresses/etc of businesses should be removed. It's that supporting information should be added. In addition to a listing of major companies each neighborhood or city should also have a summary of the economic activity that ties in the listing. (See Talk:Gulfton,_Houston,_Texas/GA2 and Talk:Bellaire,_Texas/GA1) - Both the articles list companies with offices, but they also list general stuff too. Both list parks, but the parks have detail written about them.
3. Wikipedia has a notability standard for companies. When applied to a number of companies with operations in a city or neighborhood the "herd" is "thinned" significantly. I can't think of too many companies with operations in Burlingame, California, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, or SeaTac, Washington - Also Manhattan itself is divided into neighborhoods, so while companies may not be listed in Manhattan, they could be listed in Midtown Manhattan.
4. Well, WP:AVIATION does have to do with airlines. But to be safe I also listed it here Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(organizations_and_companies)#Where.2FHow_to_list_offices_of_airlines_that_are_not_headquarters

WhisperToMe (talk) 18:56, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the edit on El Segundo 1. Those weren't all just "ticket" offices 2. Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Aviation#Where.2FHow_to_list_offices_of_airlines_that_are_not_headquarters - On here Vegaswikian said "I guess it comes down to the following question. Does the office have a significant impact on the economy of the location it is housed in? " - So it depends on the location itself and what else it has. As for Milborne I'm not sure if the responses really addressed the question at all. In any case I don't see a consensus formed by this discussion (2-1-1, maybe?) 3. Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(organizations_and_companies)#Where.2FHow_to_list_offices_of_airlines_that_are_not_headquarters - the response said that Notability guidelines don't apply to these airline offices. Instead it is Wikipedia:Handling_trivia#Connective_trivia - It all depends, on a case by case basis, for each city. - Nobody said anything on whether it is or is not actually appropriate to list these offices.

In any case, you can get an article through GA with these airline offices listed, so as long as the place isn't too broad it may as well be okay. WhisperToMe (talk) 22:11, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Taipei Economic and cultural office in Guam - Where is it?

http://www.roc-taiwan.org/US/LAX/ct.asp?xItem=13287&CtNode=2823&mp=52&xp1= - Is this in Hagatna, or is this somewhere else WhisperToMe (talk) 22:11, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Oops, sorry, late reply. It is in Hagatna. The Bank of Guam building at 13.4749N 144.7547E is probably the tallest building in Hagatna. The street's full name is Chalan Santo Papa Juan Pablo Dos (Chamorro for "Holy Father John Paul II Street") but the USPS standard is "Chalan Santo Papa". The TECO functions internally as a consulate, but externally it isn't, since the US doesn't recognize the ROC. Visits from the ROC President or VP will get VIP security treatment (better than Palau/FSM/Marshall counterparts because these are common), but the TECO staff don't necessarily get treated as diplomats. By the way I just found some street maps at Census' website. HkCaGu (talk) 20:16, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for finding the maps! Since they are in the public domain I could upload them and put them in the articles of the Guam municipalities! Anyhow the international relations WikiProject lists the USA TECOs as de facto diplomatic missions of the ROC. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:19, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport

Sir - you cannot determine if this is "encyclopedic" simply by a notation - it needs to be noted that in Minneapolis - Air Canada DOES NOT exist. There is no longer any signage at the gate nor is there any remaining images of AC at the counter, besides one- ONE- hanging display on the ceiling from 1999.

As an employee of United Airlines - the ground operator for AC, either come up with a way to put that we operate these (2) flights a day - or remove them from the site. I have forwarded this on to Expert-Verify the current routings on AC.- it should be noted that this is extremely misleading especially to our international customers who expect to see an AC employee.

Instead of editing from a distant point in the planet some where, maybe you should allow a local individual to edit the page to reflect current events. Don't delete it, figure out a way to include this information altogether - if you need an image of what I am talking about - post back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.116.145.54 (talk) 19:09, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't decide what's encyclopedic--the project participants' consensus does. See WP:AIRPORT. Destination and airline listings are by flights, not ground handling, and they are listed to illustrate what an airport is like, not be a guide to travelers. Any further details like frequency, aircraft type, and ground haling are not encyclopedic. See WP:TRAVEL. I'm surprised that an major international airline employee is not aware that ground handling by another airline (for any airline that doesn't operate that many flights to warrant full-time employment of continuous X-hour shifts) is very common. Check in counters and gates not having a permanent sign for airlines is very common. By your logic, SkyWest doesn't even "operate" in a lot of places (including small airports) because of ground handling (being handled by employees of some other company). HkCaGu (talk) 23:18, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
I have to slightly agree with the unsigned member; the Air Canada situation is odd, as Air Canada does not really have a presence in Minneapolis. The AC/UA Hybrid mix in Minneapolis is a new format for both airlines and is the ground work for the potential mix of CO/UA. Under the last check-in counter remodel, the user is correct the signage for AC was removed and it is a bit confusing while walking the main terminal.
As the for the comparison between Skywest and Shuttle America, well, that really doesn’t apply here. You’re comparing something where a company works in tandem with a national carrier, whereas this is more about two different airlines working in tandem. The recent removal of signage however - is not very common. Most partnership stations, like the ones in IAD and SFO - have the original markings of the carrier being ground handled, however in this case, the user is right. Example: ANA in ORD - where the signage exists.
As for the remarks about WP:TRAVEL that again, it’s a gray area. These statements are technically are factual and not read as a travel guide. AC doesn’t have a ticket counter, nor any employees. Maybe it should all appear under United as a Toronto flight operated by Air Canada?
I cannot speak to who was claiming to be who here, but as an employee for United; that works in Minneapolis at the counter: we have numerous people miss flights due to the signage issue. I believe even AC's site doesn’t tell anyone where to go and I can vouch for the fact that I have personally seen people carry a paper copy of the MSP page.
HkCaGu - cool down, its an open source encyclopedia- there are tons of issues with Wiki and we all know there are people who may not understand all the processes; but don’t talk down.. its not necessary. Unitedguy85 (talk) 21:34, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Some people just don't seem to get the message. I recall this being a problem for quite awhile with a couple of sockpuppet accounts. Someone in the Phillipines is entirely too absorbed in local TV.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 18:19, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

No shortage of strangeness in this world, that's for sure. Our little friend has himself a three-month block and I've semi-protected the article on the TV show for two weeks. I noticed several IP addresses from the same range messing up the article. If he comes back under another IP and I'm not here, go to the WP:AIV page and report it or leave word on the WP:AN to request a range block. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 18:29, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

PS: The address resolves back to the Phillipine Long Distance Telephone Company. There are a whole lot of contacts on the WHOIS page and I know the IT guys take this sort of nonsense very seriously. NW to Asia flight number reshuffle

No problem. I will remove BKK from HNL and HNK from BKK since that flight does not use the same aircraft. I have put an emd date for LAX-MNL on NW for May 30 since that is the last direct flight and after that, it wil not use the same flight number. If you find any more, can you please update them as well. Cheers! Cashier freak (talk) 19:00, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

NW Asia-NRT-US

I am not sure what it means but if the booking engine implies "Change planes" then the aircraft is not the same for both routes. For example, NW 21/22 will be routed HNL-MNL-HNL beginning March 29th. However, Manila is listed as a destination for NWA on HNL page but Honolulu is not listed on the MNL page. One user said, "Per NW booking, MNL-HNL is not direct" eventhough the aircraft is 747 on both legs of the route. I am often confused on whether or not if we list these flights as destinations. Cashier freak (talk) 16:17, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

DL Africa

I don't think they shift the routes. JFK-DKR-Abuja is loaded into Delta.com! I think that's the only route i know that has changed. Sal is not bookable on their website form ATL or JFK anyways. Unless Delta announced it, the ref provided still states that flights originate in Atlanta. If they would have shift it, it should've been announced by DL. Re: Florida Article

I am stating an example of a road simply to illustrate the complication that lies in thinking of a numbering system starting in the east and ending in the west, which is opposite of the national system. The old information of two digit roads indicating north south and three digits indicating east west is outdated, at best, since Ive lived in parts of Florida my whole life and have never seen this to be the case. The article referenced by the previous author did not contain this information to my knowledge, and was itself very outdated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paraplegicemu (talkcontribs) 18:52, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

about TPE flag issue

dear hkcagu: i was aware about your explanation and your insistence to remove the ROC'S flag. just as the information you sent to me. i have read it. it states that republic of china(taiwan) can be used to differentiate with PRC, or you can use it while you point out a city of it. thus, i don't think there is a problem when i try to explain the kaohsiung belongs to taiwan(republic of china). also, you unilaterally reject the ROC's flag to be revealed on that page which seems to degrade taiwan, for all other country's flag are all shown. additionally, i disagree your claim that we don't need to care about the readers. you said that ROC's flag will not be used anyway. that's true. however, even the IOC or the world game's homepage will not show these host countyr's flags, there still no rule says that we can't use this flag or we must use the official flag on that page. thus, i still contend to use the ROC's flag. for the name of the country, i can accept either taiwan or republic of china. however, i have observed someone went to that page change taiwan to ROC or ROC to taiwan. it really shows that the people of taiwan care about these titles; hence, i combine them both together to taiwan(republic of china). and has end to be fair, i put the ROC's flag back again. otherwise, you must remove all other previous host country's flags in order to be fair. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 台灣護士 (talkcontribs) 05:53, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Foreign airlines

You said: "foreign airlines don't employ locals or generate sales tax, only office rent) (rollback | undo)"

Sales tax isn't a criteria to include the local McDonald's or the local Hilton, so it wouldn't be the criteria to not include the airline offices. Inclusion of a detail like this depends on the city itself. The airlines are proportionally important for a city of 15,000. Does the airline industry not play a role, with LAX next door? Also, where does the office rent ultimately go? Ultimately the office rent goes to the City of El Segundo.

And how do you know the office doesn't employ "locals?" Do you have access to their employment records? Who are locals? El Segundo doesn't exist in a vaccuum. In small towns the McDonald's surely employs locals, but we don't include the McDonald's. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:45, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

  • With a source I can say on the El Segundo article that the airport is the reason why the aerospace firms are in El Segundo in the first place. This is what makes the airline offices important for El Segundo. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:57, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Also in 1978 the LA Times made an article about El Segundo becoming the site of an airline office. ("El Segundo to Be Airline Office Site") I do not know which airline it is/was: [1] WhisperToMe (talk) 05:03, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
OK let me explain. Airlines establish ticket offices in El Segundo but they are mostly city office for the Los Angeles metro area. Unlike McDonald's, airline employees will most likely not be from the immediate area. Therefore, airline offices aren't there to bring jobs to El Segundo residents, and they don't bring sales tax to the local government, and they don't bring significant lunch traffic to local restaurants--and therefore their rent alone has very little economical impact compared to most other businesses, especially big offices of big companies.
I can see a legitimate compromise by saying the airline industry as a whole has an impact in El Segundo. You can say something like "Due to the proximity to LAX, El Segundo is home to many airlines' ticket offices, including..." (Addresses aren't really necessary since they can easily be looked up, but sources/refs are fine.) I just can't accept the concept that a big company having a five-people office in a town of 15,000 is notable, or that a 100-people office in a busy central business district is notable.
The most important rule, as someone mentioned some time back, is whether your content in question has relevance in the article in question. We shouldn't robotically mention all ticket offices of all airlines in their locations' articles without considering their relevance. HkCaGu (talk) 22:23, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
I am fine with the compromise you proposed. I am leaving out the addresses of all of them except Japan Airlines. Thanks :) WhisperToMe (talk) 01:37, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

No capitals

HkCaGu, how about if we list the capitals of Hong Kong and Macau as "none", and we put footnotes saying "Government Hill is located in Central and Western District" and "MGH is located in the St. Lawrence Parish", so that people will know where the government headquarters are located? Location of Victoria City

HkCaGu, in a revision, you state that the location of Victoria City is in the Eastern District. But the wiki entry for Victoria City states that it is located in Central, which is now part of the Central and Western District. Could you please clarify this discrepency? Thank you. Although I realized "arbitration" has been attempted for controversial articles like Falun Gong and that failed miserably. Now the Falun Gong article reads like the a marketing pamphlet for the group. Colipon+(T) 23:06, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

CDP

I'm aware the CDP has no legal standing. It's that the article Honolulu is about the CDP. Articles about other CDPs mention what is inside the boundaries, so one needs to explain what is inside X CDP and that Y is in X CDP. Also, CDPs have a special purpose in Hawaii: the U.S. Census Bureau uses the numbers from the Honolulu CDP, not the city+county, when comparing the area to other U.S. cities; because of the municipal structure of Hawaii, the Census Bureau uses CDPs in a similar fashion to how it uses municipal boundaries in other states (See Largest_cities_in_the_United_States#cnote_b). Also the CDPs are useful in determining the "communities" of where things are in Hawaii. WhisperToMe (talk) 16:36, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

NWA flight changes

Thanks for telling me that. Also, NW 7 will now be routed to PEK now instead of HKG so people won't have to delete PEK from NWA since it will now be a direct flight after June 30. Thanks! 74.183.173.237 (talk) 10:05, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

KL International Airport or Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Firstly, thank you for taking the trouble and interest to provide such information on wikipedia.

My reasons for changing the name on the article to KL International Airport are as follows:

1) When the fourth prime minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad spearheaded this airport project, he named it and repeatedly called it KL International Airport

2) The link you looked at is commercial magazine site for passengers which made it also necessary to expand the term KL to Kuala Lumpur to sell it as a destination. In fact, there are two versions of the site you looked at http://www.klia.com.my/index.php?ch=80&pg=267 and http://www.klia.com.my/index.php?ch=70&pg=182 Even so, the first link still uses KL International Airport in its tab

3) If you get the hardcopy of official KLIA magazine, you will also see KL International Airport being used officially.

4) Except for private airports, all others are managed by Malaysia Aiports Holdings Berhad in Malaysia. The official name KL International Airport stands out in their list of airports. http://www.malaysiaairports.com.my/index.php?ch=38&pg=158&ac=1040

Like you, I like to be accurate. Would you also know how the title of this article can be changed to KL International Airport and the term "Kuala Lumpur International Airport" redirect to it without just copying and moving the contents thus losing all history?

Hope you won't mind me undoing your change first now. Thanks for your help.
