This is based on advice my Mom would give me. I would get in trouble because other kids provoked me into freaking out and that was all the teacher saw. She told me that if I could not behave then at least don't be the most disruptive person in the room. She told me that if I was even just the second most disruptive that I would be ignored most of the time.

Perhaps not the ideal lesson for Wikipedia, however there was something that translated. If someone is being malicious and trying to provoke me into a reaction, then it does not serve me in any way to give way to that provocation. Once I learned to recognise when people were intentionally trying to provoke a negative reaction it became easier to recognize and I stopped falling for it.

This is the cautionary tale I want to get across in this essay. The title is far from ideal, I would love it if someone could suggest a title that better represented the nuanced idea I am trying to get out there. Chillum 22:31, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
