Welcome to the Wikipedia!

[edit]

Welcome to the Wikipedia, Hgrosser! And thanks for helping with the Science fiction article. Hope you enjoy editing here and becoming a Wikipedian! Here are some perfunctory tips to hasten your acculturation into the Wikipedia experience:

Some odds and ends: Boilerplate text, Brilliant prose, Cite your sources, Civility, Conflict resolution, How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Pages needing attention, Peer review, Policy Library, Utilities, Verifiability, Village pump, Wikiquette, and you can sign your name on any page by typing 4 tildes: ~~~~.

Best of luck, Hgrosser, and have fun! Ombudsman 14:20, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Age

You should probably inform whoever added that incorrect age of the existence of the template if you can find out who it was in the article history. - Mgm|(talk) 11:55, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tip on moving pages

[edit]

It's easier to list a page at WP:RM and let an admin handle it, than to do something convoluted like using a temporary page (Zzzzzzzzzz) as you did. --Closedmouth 13:50, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, that's okay, I think I ended up merging the history into the wrong page anyway. We all make mistakes. --Closedmouth 05:01, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, Schumin Web Transit Center is still down, but I'm working on bringing it back bigger and better than it was before. Thanks for the archive link. SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:15, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

On 14 March you tagged Image:My Buttock.jpg for deletion. However, that image is hosted on the Commons and can't be deleted from here. All that I could delete was the page that you created when you added the prod tag. I will let an admin from the commons know about the image and then they can decide what to do about it. [edit]

Thank you very much for catching my errors in the article "Standard electrode potential (data page)". Stan J. Klimas (talk) 23:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Standard electrode potential (data page)/posline requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Closedmouth (talk) 08:32, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With this edit to Myrtle Avenue, you replaced the hard links (to the services for the station) in the intro with {{NYCS|J}}, etc.. This breaks functionality in Google Earth. Unfortunately, Google Earth can't display templates so that would be shown as is served by and trains at all times, and the train during rush hours. Please don't use templates in the intro section of station articles; they are fine elsewhere. Thanks, Acps110 (talkcontribs) 00:01, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ref template

[edit]

Hi - I wanted to say thanks for creating Template:Smallref. I tried experimenting a bit with the size of the font today, but in doing so, noticed that the template starts to cause problems if it's used more than once; all refs end up appearing as duplicates of the first ref. I imagine this has something to do with the "name" field in your template.

Is this indeed the case, or am I doing something wrong? --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 17:52, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that does seem to be the problem. The solution likely would be to use #if: to select based on whether name is specified. I'll have to look into the right syntax for that. Hgrosser (talk) 21:06, 7 May 2010 (UTC-7)
Sorry, I got completely sidetracked! I'm afraid I'm not terribly good at code, only figuring it out bit by bit through trial and error. I'll see if what you just changed has helped in any way. Cheers. --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 15:41, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've just been trying to work the new template into Monarchy of Canada, but the "name" parameter still isn't functioning properly; the citations end up reading as "{{{1}}}". I don't know what to do to fix that. --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 23:07, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to come into this discussion late, but what exactly does Template:smref do? the reason I'm interested is that I initiated Talk:Prime Minister of Canada#Seeking_consensus_to_remove_.3Csmall.3E_tags_around_.3Cref.3E and if it makes references smaller than they already are, you may want to comment on that discussion. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 03:51, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:Km/h to mph

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:Km/h to mph requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Hi. When you recently edited Distinguished Service Medal (United States), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Distinguished Service Cross (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Your recent requests for article renaming

[edit]

Both your requests have been contested based on Wikipedia's manual of style, specifically MOS:DASH. Since this guideline is pretty clear on the issue, I'll cancel the requests. If you still think they should be submitted, you can recreate them using the procedure described at WP:RM#Requesting a single page move. Favonian (talk) 13:49, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Pussy Riot requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Dennis Brown (talk) 18:35, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you explain what you are doing? This seems unnecessary and it's causing people work.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:30, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked temporarily from editing for abuse of editing privileges. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

I've blocked you for 12 hours. Really, it's just to get your attention, I have no objection to lifting it or any other admin is free to. But if you let it run out and do the same thing again and don't engage with inquirers, well, you guess.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:04, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

All my edits have been constructive, not disruptive. Normally, the list of interlanguage links in an article cannot include the same language, as if you write [[en:SomeArticle]], it gets treated as [[SomeArticle]], which appears on its own page as SomeArticle. However, if the list of interwiki links is enclosed in <span style=display:none>...</span>, it has no effect on the links to other languages, which appear in their usual place on the left-hand side (perhaps these over-eager admins didn’t notice this), but suppresses the display of SomeArticle in the article text. This permits an identical list of interwiki links to appear in every language, which simplifies the task of adding a new language. (You can just copy the list from any one of the existing languages, only adding the new language, and not having to add the language you copied it from.)

As to my ignoring the request to stop, when I received the note on my talk page I immediately ceased enclosing the interwiki links (and I came nowhere near the 3RR!) and spent my time composing an appropriate reply. (I'm not the fastest of typists, after all,:) and I do like to spend some time away from the computer. ) After all, you could have explained it better than “This is not on;”. Frankly, blocking me for not getting back to you fast enough is more of an abuse of the administrative privilege than any abuse I may have committed of the editing privilege. Hgrosser (talk) 03:22, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

You persistently acted against consensus, ignoring other people. I would agree to unblock you if you agreed to stop making such edits and start a discussion at WP:VPR instead. Max Semenik (talk) 07:23, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Here you reverted me rather than discuss it, and you also reverted me on fr:wp and continued deploying this on pt:wp afterwards. You've been reverted by editors on fr:wp and es:wp, as I noted on User talk:Wehwalt#IW links. I've also seen a bot cut the local link from pages on de:wp and da:wp.

This is not a good idea and you need to get consensus for it before continuing, which I don't believe you'll get. Block-copying sets of iw links is often quite inappropriate. If you agree to stop doing this and seek consensus, you should be unblocked. Alarbus (talk) 04:00, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Hgrosser (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I did not act against consensus, no one objected until I happened to do it to the Article of the Day, because it had only 2 other wikis. And reverting someone once is hardly grounds for a ban. However now that you've told me where to discuss it, I agree not to do it anymore until I discuss it on the Village Pump. (But not right now, I'm signing off.) And you ignored the ban msg. that it was just to get my attn. Hgrosser (talk) 08:02, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Accept reason:

Original admin unblocking on representation by editor accepted in good faith. Wehwalt (talk) 08:27, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Until you discuss it or until you have consensus?--Wehwalt (talk) 08:08, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Until a substantial number of people agree w/ me, and start doing it themselves. Hgrosser (talk) 08:11, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good enough. You aren't blocked anymore.--Wehwalt (talk) 08:19, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HighBeam

[edit]

Hello, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:40, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your HighBeam account is ready!

[edit]

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:45, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why not just cite that book, if that is where it came from? Let the publisher worry about if it too lengthy a quote. Hgrosser (talk) 14:51, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, citing the book makes no difference to its copyright status. The material can only be used if it is completely rewritten so that it is no longer a copy, or a close paraphrase of the text in the book. In other words, the facts can be used, but the words can't. Alumin(i)um bottles

[edit]

Hi. I reverted your move of Aluminium bottle to Aluminum bottle. Consensus on Wikipedia, per Talk:Aluminium/Spelling is to use "aluminium" because this is what the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry uses. Please don't move pages against a general consensus without at least discussing the matter on the article's talk page. (I'm also not at all convinced that it's primarily a north-American product; we have plenty of them over here in the UK, too.) Dricherby (talk) 10:59, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • And would you please stop changing random instances of the word "aluminium" in the article to "aluminum"? I realise that you're used to typing "aluminum" so it's natural that this will occur in new text but there's no reason to deliberately make the spelling in the article inconsistent. You know, I totally agree with you. When I type my articles on my computer using Calibri font, the quote marks all come out the way you inserted them. But then I see thousands (millions?) of other Wikipedia articles which use straight quote marks because that's the way they look when you type them in the editing window. The consensus of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera is that opera articles all use the Day-Month-Year format. If you wish to see that changed, please raise it on the WP O talk page for discussion, but you'll see that every other opera article you look at uses the existing DMY layout. Thanks. Edit-a-thon tomorrow (Saturday) in Oakland

[edit]

Hi, I hope you will be joining us tomorrow afternoon at the Edit-a-thon at Tech Liminal, in Oakland. We'll be working on articles relating to women and democracy (and anything else that interests you). It's sponsored by the California League of Women Voters, Tech Liminal, and me.

If this is the first you are hearing of this event, my apologies for the last-minute notice! I announced it on the San Francisco email list and by a banner on your watchlist, but I neglected to look at the San Francisco invitation list until this evening. If you can't make it this time, I hope to see you at a similar event soon! -Pete (talk) 04:45, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hamilton C shell

[edit]

The proper name of the product is Hamilton C shell. It does not need to be prefaced by "the" nor should it be. It would like saying Microsoft sells "the Windows" or "the Word". Re: your confusion about the author's name, it is considered impolite to refer to a transgendered person by their old name in the manner you've done. From Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies#Guidelines: "The Wikipedia Manual of Style's guidelines on identity indicate to refer to transgender individuals according to the names and pronouns they use to identify themselves." While the product is notable, the author does not appear to be, hence my concern about the personal intrusion. But to satisfy your concern, I've cited the note already included in the Hamilton C shell article. I trust this will be sufficient. Msnicki (talk) 16:31, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you recently added the above titled article to the English Wikipedia, using a rough translation from Google Translate. Please note that the community has decided that creating articles created from rough translations using this method is considerably worse that having no article at all. Before editing or creating further articles, please spend some time fully translating the above noted article. Thank you. Cindy(talk to me) 06:50, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited to the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon!

[edit]
Help build the visual language of Wikipedia at the first ever Wikimedia Foundation/Noun Project Iconathon

The Wikimedia Foundation is partnering up with the Noun Project to run the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon on April 6th at WMF headquarters, and you're invited!

What is an Iconathon: An iconathon is a co-design process where Wikimedia staff, the user community, and a few graphic designers collaboratively discuss what symbols could best represent a concept for an icon – for example, what's the best icon for New Editor, Revert or Oversight? Sketches will be converted into high fidelity icons by Noun Project graphic designers, and will be released under a free license for use by anyone on the Internet. Help build the free encyclopedia icon set that anyone in the world can share and reuse!

Logistics: The event runs from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on April 6th at the Wikimedia Foundation office in San Francisco. Follow the signs at the door! We'll have plenty of paper and pens/pencils for sketching.

How to sign up: Please register here using the code 'wiki'

Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Starship Troopers (film). Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. -- Doniago (talk) 20:46, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Given your reversion of my deletion, I've asked for input at WT:FILM. My opinion is that the link is likely in violation of WP:ELNO, but I'm willing to see what other editors have to say. Regards. Doniago (talk) 00:54, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I ask you to have some patience regarding adding this link. Discussion has not been finalized, and we need to establish a consensus about a link like that. I just posted my findings (that the film is hosted by Crackle) and think it seems okay to use. Let's have other editors weigh in before we restore that link. If it is acceptable, maybe we can provide links to the other films too. Erik (talk | contribs) 19:36, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.

Official logo of Wiki Loves Monuments

Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.

Hi, this change messed up the page Deaths in 2016: the list bullet vanished from those lines where {{Ill}} was used. I think I fixed the problem by removing a blank line from the template. --Silvonen (talk) 04:26, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to a Wednesday evening event in SF

[edit]
Please join us in downtown San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism

Hi folks,

Please copy and share this on other talk pages. We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather at the Wikimedia Foundation lounge to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no meaty agenda this month, but we will allow a brief period for:

  • Open mic for anybody who attended WikiConference North America 2016 in San Diego last week and wants to share their takeaway
  • Question & answer
  • Open mic for announcements
  • Maybe a focus on some topical election article editing with Ben?

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, a stool or counter and do your own thing.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Also, don't be shy about hitting us up if you have thoughts on future speakers or wiki-related activities.

For further details, please see: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, October 2016.

PS: Mark your calendars ahead now for the 3rd Wednesday in November, the 30th (the week after Thanksgiving), at 6 p.m. when our WikiSalon will host a super awesome top secret mystery guest mingling in our midst. We will announce specifics at the upcoming WikiSalon.

See you soon! Pete F, Ben, Stephen, Jacob, and Checkingfax | (Subscribe or Unsubscribe to this talk page notice here)

Punctuation style

[edit]

I notice you replacing straight with "curly" apostrophes and quote marks as with this change to Celsius. Are you aware that this is contrary to MOS:STRAIGHT? —Quondum 10:17, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. —Anita5192 (talk) 20:04, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is a final warning. If you keep changing quotes as you do now, you will be blocked from editing. You've been warned multiple times over several years and have chosen to ignore the warnings. Knock it off.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 21:27, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked indefinitely

[edit]

This is a bit ridiculous, Hgrosser, but because you're insisting on breaching MOS:STRAIGHT in spite of a final warning, I've blocked you indefinitely. This is such a minor issue but refusing to communicate and refusing to resolve minor issues with your editing is considered disruptive editing. I need you to explain why you're ignoring feedback on inappropriate edits, and why you're refusing to abide by that incredibly simple MOS rule. You can return to editing whenever you stop it.
