Additions to Women in Red

Thanks, Harej, for your additions. Just one small point: in line with Wikipedia conventions, the item on external links should be headed "External links" (not "External Links"). I cannot edit it without causing problems.--Ipigott (talk) 10:29, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Got it. For future reference, you can rename a page and then update it within the main WikiProject page, as that page contains a list of the subpages. Harej (talk) 13:27, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
I did exactly that but then the module caused a red link. Anyway, thanks for fixing the problem.--Ipigott (talk) 18:44, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Another problem: I can't get our new navbox (e.g. at the foot of the main page) to link correctly to Press. It hits the right section for a couple of seconds and then goes to the project.--Ipigott (talk) 11:07, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

The press thing is interesting. Clicking it should bring it to the right section but it doesn't. In the meantime I have it linked directly to that subpage. Harej (talk) 13:27, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, it seems to be fine now. Thanks.--Ipigott (talk) 18:44, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Women in Red

WP:Women in Red is using Love Heart KammaRahbek.SVG as our logo. Can your team alter it to make it unique for WiR, e.g. perhaps change the color to red? Also, I like the simple logo used by Wikipedia:Medicine and that it includes the Wikipedia globe; can we add the Wikipedia globe into the WiR logo? I've created a Women in Red Commons cat[1] and placed this svg into it, but this should be temporary and we should have a unique logo in 2016. Thx. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:26, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

We can work on this. Harej (talk) 15:42, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

I added an External links section at the bottom of the page. The only way I could do it was to add it to Resources. Could you please make it a unique section? Thx. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:54, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

I have created the external links section. Harej (talk) 16:11, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:09, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Events

I've made 2 updates but the page isn't refreshing. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:42, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Rosiestep, they appear for me now. Do they now appear for you as well? Harej (talk) 16:23, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
They do; thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:09, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Naming convention

We have discussed the navigation difficulties with (a) Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Red. In hindsight, we should have left WiR at (b) Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red. We also talked about (c) Wikipedia:Women in Red; short and sweet, and makes me thing of Wikipedia:WikiWomen's History Month. From 60,000', and looking to the future (as the goal is to translate this brand into other language Wikipedias), what would be a best practice? What direction are forward-thinking en-wiki projects going with their naming conventions? If I edited on the es-wiki or de-wiki, and I wanted to replicate WiR, which of these en-wiki names would make the most sense? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:58, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Rosiestep, all three are valid names. I personally prefer plain "Women in Red" but it is not more or less "correct" than the other two. For the other languages, the best name will depend on what the conventions are for naming WikiProjects (or WikiProject-like things) on those language editions; each edition tends to do things slightly differently. (In French, for example, WikiProjects are called "portals," similar to our own portals but they also function as WikiProjects!) Harej (talk) 18:00, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
Aside from discussing this move to plain "Women in Red" (my preference, too) on the project talkpage, what else should I mention to the team on the talkpage, e.g. logistics, and so on? --Rosiestep (talk) 01:42, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Saturday January 16: Wikipedia Day NYC 2016

You are invited to join us at New York University for Wikipedia Day NYC 2016, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of Wikipedia 15, the project's global 15th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 7:00 pm at NYU ITP Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway (between Waverly and Washington Place)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 17:56, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 6

Newsletter • January 2016

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

What comes next

Some good news: the Wikimedia Foundation has renewed WikiProject X. This means we can continue focusing on making WikiProjects better.

During our first round of work, we created a prototype WikiProject based on two ideas: (1) WikiProjects should clearly present things for people to do, and (2) The content of WikiProjects should be automated as much as possible. We launched pilots, and for the most part it works. But this approach will not work for the long term. While it makes certain aspects of running a WikiProject easier, it makes the maintenance aspects harder.

We are working on a major overhaul that will address these issues. New features will include:

  • Creating WikiProjects by simply filling out a form, choosing which reports you want to generate for your project. This will work with existing bots in addition to the Reports Bot reports. (Of course, you can also have sections curated by humans.)
  • One-click button to join a WikiProject, with optional notifications.
  • Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.)

The end goal is a collaboration tool that can be used by WikiProjects but also by any edit-a-thon or group of people that want to coordinate on improving articles. Though implemented as an extension, the underlying content will be wikitext, meaning that you can continue to use categories, templates, and other features as you normally would.

This will take a lot of work, and we are just getting started. What would you like to see? I invite you to discuss on our talk page.

Until next time,

Harej (talk) 02:53, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you

Dear Harej Sorry for taking so long to get to you. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with studying Chinese all day, working all night, to say nothing of all this business about working out. But thank you so much for inviting to join the project on Hampshire. I am very honored and much appreciated your kind invitation. Thank you for your kindness and please have a wonderful day! --A.S. Brown (talk) 21:43, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you, A.S. Brown! Let me know what you think of the WikiProject and if there is anything I can do to help. Harej (talk) 01:35, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your kind offer. I have a book that I think would be of some issue to the project, but I owned way too many books, a veritable private library if you will (my landlord hates me for that) and I can't seem to find it. I believe that this project is a great effort on the part of all, and I am must pleased to join in. I am something of a hopeless Anglophile, but it is nice to write something other war for a change. Looking forward to getting started, if just find that damned book :). Please have a great day!--A.S. Brown (talk) 11:55, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Women in Red

James, can you please let me know when your team will move Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Red to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, or tell me that you don't have time for it? No worries if you're busy with other things, but please let me know either way. Thank you. (cc @Ipigott, Megalibrarygirl, and SusunW) --Rosiestep (talk) 17:09, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Rosiestep, sorry if you had pinged me earlier and I somehow didn't get it. I will get back to you on this soon. Thankfully this rename should go more smoothly since (a) I removed a lot of hardcoded references to the WikiProject name and (b) we know everything that needs to get done. I also would like to talk to you at some point about our planned extension to the software that will make everything run so much more smoothly. Harej (talk) 01:38, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi James, thanks for your response; that all seems fine. I'm available via Skype most evenings or perhaps on the weekend. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:02, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
And I'm glad to hear we're finally once more going to have a WikiProject in its own right. James, is there any chance of making the change before our next editathon begins on 1 February? It would help to avoid further confusion.-- Ipigott (talk) 16:21, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
It can certainly be done before February 1. I will post to Women in Red's talk page once I'm doing it. Harej (talk) 21:58, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.) you got a link, or something or this particular part of things.  ?? JarrahTree 10:41, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

JarrahTree, I don't really have anything to link to at this point, since it's an idea we're working on. Once we have something more concrete to show off I would be happy to link to it. Do you have any thoughts or feedback on the idea? Harej (talk) 00:47, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
idea we're working on is a bit nebulous. I have a very large mount of thoughts on the matter, where is the best place to dump? JarrahTree 10:36, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
I imagine it does sound nebulous; we're just starting work on this. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X would be a good place so that others may chime in as well. Harej (talk) 21:52, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, there are quite a few 'components' to the whole of project tagging (as I call it at least), will think about it first. JarrahTree 09:07, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

RSS feeds

Hi Harej! I thought you might know how to do this (if it's possible). Can we embed this RSS feed for the NY Times Obituary somewhere on a Wiki page? Rosiestep and I were wondering if it was possible. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:23, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Megalibrarygirl, not as far as I know. Aside from the lack of technical functionality on Wikipedia to do so, I don't think Wikipedians would appreciate a copyrighted RSS stream on-wiki. Harej (talk) 02:27, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
We were thinking that we could use it to generate redlists or improve references. But I understand about the copyright issue... would it be a problem if it was on a WikiProject page for support of writing articles? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:13, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank You Barnstar
Thank you, James, for all your technical expertise at Women in Red, including your latest work moving WiR back to its own WikiProject. Didn't realize months ago it would be double work for you, but want you to know you are appreciated and recognized by our membership. Rosiestep (talk) 19:26, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, Rosiestep. I am happy to do whatever I can to help this exciting and highly productive project. Harej (talk) 20:04, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
