Hi! A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. You have stepped! As a reminder, you all have today 30 Jan, Thurs. 31 Jan and Friday 1 Feb to work in the lab. As we made a lot of progress toward the first week goals (at least in Wikipedia) in class on Tuesday, you might finish the first week's goals before the end of your Friday class time. If so, I recommend that you check out the two pages associated with WikiProject Mexico WP:MEXICO and Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mexico/Community. One thing you will need to do over the course of the semester is interact with other Wikipedians including those associated with this community. One way to do this is to make contributions to these two pages.

Welcome to the class!Thelmadatter (talk) 15:43, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Important Message about attendance

[edit]

After being a little behind on checking lab attendance, I am dismayed to find that none of you have been registering into the LLRC (lab) like you should. I have to take that to mean that you are not attending. Please re-read the contract I had you guys sign at the beginning of the class. You have only 10 absences. We have been meeting now for 2 weeks with 4 F2F (presencial) class sessions including yesterday, Feb 11. Be sure you attend your lab sessions from today on. Thelmadatter (talk) 17:24, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to put the two lectures here:

ONE WORLD OR MANY.

The lecture talks about, two different theories, and it take its over from the topic of exchange student programs, the first one talks about the benefits of exchange student programs, and how they work out. The main reason is that it doesn't matter where the exchange students, are and how different in language, culture they are, we are all the same so we can live together, and we can make a good relationship with everybody. “One World”

The second theory, doesn't concur “Many” it says that in a lot of exchange student programs, the students are prepare to see different things, and get through it, and then after being prepare for that some times they are confronted with their ideas and way of living and they can’t adapt, so they think there is something wrong with the foreign culture or they, but neither one appreciation is correct is just the way it works to be from a different culture.

Another example of what can happen is that the exchange student over adapt to the new culture and assumes that it is the good one and his culture is the bad one, so when he or she comes back to his own culture he feels uncomfortable.

The lecture continues with a refection on the positive effects of approaching to the new culture thinking that as an exchange student you are going to find differences form his own culture so the approach could be less hard, that could be the first step. Also it tells that the differences almost always produce a ethnocentric thought, because every people is educated, in its own culture an assumes that the way they do is the correct one so when they met another type of culture that do, or see things in a different way they assume that the correct way to do or see things is like their culture.

Then the next step could be by accepting that there are differences, but all people have the same basic necessities, so the differences could pass to second term. minimizing the significance of the differences, but still is it a ethnocentric way of thinking and limits the potential of a full or more complete understand of the other culture.

Then the next step is to accept the differences by not comparing them to our own culture, because what it seems not polite to us, can be polite or normal to the other culture but the read says that this almost only can be learn when you have a deeper knowledge of the culture, so that’s the step adapt correctly to another culture. So adaptation becomes other stage and many students get to this stage when they are ending their exchange.

The final stage is when the student gets home, the felling of no man’s land, because the exchange student has mature and comprehend the other culture so she or he sees his own culture in a different way. They mature, and they know and can accept differences so they are able to shift correctly to another culture, they can see the world as many of them, and it can change their perspective of the world for their hole life.

UNDERSTANDING OF READING “Culture Part”

The article talks about how hard it is to adapt living in a different country with a different culture, being more specific it is a lady who lived on the United Kingdom, and went to Israel and she describes her experience and tells some tips to help everyone that could pass that experience and adapt us quicker and better.

She talks about that a lot of people thinks culture, is the language, religion, dress, but its far more than that, it is the way of living that you cannot entirely comprehend until you live in that culture. And she puts and example, that is the direct communication works better in Israel than being reserved.

She says that we are influence in our culture because of the environment we grow, by the country we lived, the culture is not inherited it is a process of learning, and what can be valued as good or efficient in some culture could not be seen in that way in other culture. And she puts another example. In the UK, they value a lot precise things, to checked first and be sure, but in Israel they value quickness, like when she tried to find English food she found that there were terrible spelling mistakes, but for people in Israel if you can understand the main idea in doesn't matter to find some errors, So she says you can never be 100% adapted to a new culture because you have learn some things in different ways and no matter how hard you try to change you will be always part of it, but the important thing is not to absorb totally the new culture, but to understand the general behavior of the culture so you can fill your needs in order to live in that culture.

Also she talks about 5 substantial cultural orientations where Israeli culture is different from Anglo Saxon countries and they are:

1.-Comunication Style, straight talk, they communicate very informal and what they think they say, so some people from different culture, find that rude or impolite.

2.-Personal Boundaries, here she tells that this one could be a little bit difficult to adapt, because there is no privacy, they ask about your personal live, your salary, love life, so it could be uncomfortable for people who is very private with their life.

3.-Time, they can do two or mores things at the same time, they do not have a schedule for their activities, or a plan.

4.- Rules, She says they are not to strict with the rules as the Anglo Saxon culture is, but they do not like people who takes advantage of rules, and they negotiate a lot.

5.-Authority, it is a society, where everybody is looked equal.

Finally, Katrina talks about the cultural profile of person of some culture, doesn't necessary reflects the cultural profile of the hole culture, because everybody has its own cultural profile, and after she understood the culture of Israel she began to realize that certain uncomfortable things, that annoy her, were cultural behaviors and they were not personal, so she realize the importance of understanding the cultural profile of Israel by living there.Guillermo7777 (talk) 00:29, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural Analysis of the movie:

Cultural Analysis of Movie:

That´s the way I like it

The movie item is about a young men name How, he is from singapour who works at a super market and he wants to buy a motorcycle, but he can't afford it, so in order to do it, he enters to a dancing tournament to win a price in money, so he could buy his motorcycle.

In this movie you can analyze a lot of human behavior like when the father of the young men tells him that he has to come pas to 6:00 pm to dinner, he orders him, so that’s a human relation orientation that shows lineality so it is the same with his boss.

Also he imagine he is riding the motorcycle when he is at the store, he is time oriented to the future.

In the movie there is a couple who goes to the dancing lessons, and the young man is disrespectful with others so he shows ethnocentric way of thinking.

It seems of on the verge of changing the society of singapour, like a lot of things from the western culture specially on the new generations, different from the old generations.

Also there is collaterality human relation, on dancing because you need to work like a team.

Discussion about county on Mexico

[edit]

Well, as a matter of fact there is no exactly Translation to English or a exactly definition of what is the difference between the County (Municipio), that were are going to say is the territory and the Principal town of the county, that is not the only town on the county.

For me, I would say to explain it better it is like a small state, for example we have the State of Mexico and the Capital is Toluca, where the the powers of government are located, we have: Governor State deputies State Supreme Court.

And we have the municipio, a smaller territory than the state, and a lot of Municipios or counties make the state territory, and they have their own authorities at their level , and we can call them Municipal or County Authorities, and they are located in the principal town of the county. (There is not only one village or small town located at the county So in order to differentiate the territory from the town, we can call the town by the name of capital of the county.Guillermo7777 (talk) 21:16, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, Guillermo. You should take a look at Municipalities of Mexico, a pretty good article which covers most of what you've said up there. Aille (talk) 13:37, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral point of view

[edit]

This article talks about, and objective point of view of the things and how it is done, is says that a objective point of view is when you write about some topic, with facts, sources and not by your personal opinion, your present the case with the things that are proven and with any kind of opinion or suggestion.

In specific it talks about journalism and how should things have to be made by prohibiting any kind of emotion covering and event, but the are arguments of objection for doing things with strict objectivity, by some qualified persons is something impossible, because that’s, prohibits to find the truth in some stories, because every article has the personal style of the one who wrote.

So there is another alternatives, like the one’s who take a point of view, based on facts, stats and Knowledge, but allows the other part or the person’s who have other points of view to put it on the table of discussion, present all sides of an issue.

Finally it talks about how on the U. S. A. the objectivity on journalism, has advance over the years, since the political parties had less influence on journalism, they felt more free to expose different ideas.Guillermo7777 (talk) 01:21, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Value orientation method

[edit]

VALUE ORIENTATION METHOD

It talks about how this method has been used for so many years for better understanding between different cultural groups on the U. S.

The method is bases on individual oral interviews to see how different individuals think, after that they gather together in order to integrate themselves better.

Model is based on 3 primary assumptions

1.-The first one that all people have similar problems. 2.- There are different type of solutions. 3.- all type of solutions are on every society but the preferences of doing it by everybody could be different.

Solutions are based on values and patterns.

14. "Belief in Control" (Nature-4) Three people from different areas were talking about the things that control the weather and other conditions. Here is what they each said: A) One said: My people have never controlled the rain, wind, and other natural conditions and probably never will. There have always been good years and bad years. That is the way it is, and if you are wise you will take it as it comes and do the best you can. B) The second said: My people believe that it is our job to find ways to overcome weather and other conditions just as they have overcome so many things. They believe they will one day succeed in doing this and may even overcome drought and floods. C) The third said: My people help conditions and keep thing going by working to keep in touch with all the forces which make the rain, the snow and other conditions. It is when we do the right things—live in the proper way—and keep all that we have—the land, the stock, and the water—in good condition, that all goes along well. FOR ME: Which of these people do you think had the best idea? THIRD ONE Which of the people do you think had the second best idea? THE SECOND ONE Which of these three ways best describes how you really are? THIRD ONE Which way do you think most other people in your group would say is best? SECOND ONE Which way do you think most people in the other group would say is best? SECOND ONEGuillermo7777 (talk) 01:52, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

movie cultural analysis

[edit]

CULTURAL ANALYSIS

THAT’S THE WAY I LIKE IT

Culture divides into 2 types: Which are surface manifestations and internal beliefs, which can be analyzed with Klucholn´s Values Orientation Method.

The history of the movie is about a part of the life of a young Singaporean, call Hog. He has the iluttion of buying a bike, but with his job, he can't afford it, so in order to do it he enters to a dancing contest, where the first place wins the sufficient money to buy the motorcycle, and because of that he starts taking dancing lessons where he finds during the process of the movie his true love and wins the first place of the contest to finally buy the bike.

In this movie I learned or confirm mi Knowledge about some surface manifestations from the Singaporean culture, and I can put tree examples, of external cultural manifestations that can be seen with this movie, the first one would be the native language that is English, other one is the scenes where the family of hog is eating, they are eating traditional food of Singapore, and another would be the respect shown to the older people, hog with his father and with his boss.

In this movie you can analyze a lot of human behavior, and I can describe a scene where you perfectly perceive or use the Klucholn´s Values Orientation Method, these scene is the one where the father of the main character (Hog), yells to him, for being late, because he tell him, that he has to come exactly pass 6:00 pm to dinner, he orders him, so that’s a human relation orientation that shows lineality, also the same human relation orientation is perfectly perceive when the boss of how orders him to get in time to job because he didn’t came on time.Guillermo7777 (talk) 01:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

comparative rethoric

[edit]

COMPARATIVE RETHORIC The lecture talks about, how a person from any culture is influence on their way to do or approach things, sincerely, the lecture it is a little bit abstract and it is quite hard to talk about it. The important idea is when a person from certain culture has to develop in other culture, a they put as an example the language, for example the anglo european`s with the way they write, so the patterns are different from their maternal language.

The hole lecture is about mixing aspects of cultures in live and how hard it is to undertand for every part, because as the example of the engineers, the Mexican Engineers are expect to what the boss says and don`t have iniciative and the American style is very different is to take initiative, so when they were mix it, was hard to woek together but when they mixed right it work.Guillermo7777 (talk) 01:51, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
