my humble contributions:Philippine Tarsier

Hello all! This is my first attempt here, and I am sorry to be so excited to get to work, I did not realize there are protocols, etc. I might have taken for granted. At any rate, I did what I could and will hopefully be doing more contributions...Guest818 09:06, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I've cleaned it up some more. Lots of good work you're doing, though. Some notes:
  1. There are several passages where "tarsier" is used. Are these facts true for all tarsiers, or only the Philippine Tarsier? If these are unique, please clarify. If these are truely about all tarsiers, then be more explicit in that and also think about putting some of that information in the tarsier article.
  2. When refering to the species, please use the singular. Also, use the capitalization of the article title. "Philippine Tarsier" refers to this particular species. "Philippine tarsier" refers to any tarsier found in the Philippines.
  3. I commented out a few small sections on communication. Don't use "this refers to" language. These sections need to be rewritten.
  4. Section headings should have only the first word capitalized, except for proper nouns. All other words should not be capitalized.
  5. "Other significant information" is not a valid section heading. Either split up the section with better headings, or merge that text into other sections.
Keep up the good work! - UtherSRG (talk) 12:19, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I will be doing some more work on this, too. Guest818 04:03, 9 November 2006 (UTC) Hello! Just checking with you on a couple of things: the rationale for removing the local names, and category: primates. For your questions:

  1. Statements refer to the Philippine tarsier.
  2. Philippine Tarsier and Philippine tarsier - what is the distinction?
  3. will fix the communication soon
  4. will also work on thisGuest818 20:23, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Different works use different naming conventions. In Wikipedia, at least in the primate realm, we use full capitalization to denote the common name of a species, and sentance case to denote a larger, possibly less formal, grouping. As I said above, this means that "Philippine Tarsier" refers to this particular species, while "Philippine tarsier" refers to any tarsiers in the Philippines. - UtherSRG (talk) 20:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the speedy reply, and the clarification. As far as I know, there are no other tarsier species in the Philippines except Tarsius syrichta, although there might be subspecies not yet documented, the Philippines being an archipelago, hence species may vary from island to island. License tagging for Image:PTFI Board.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:PTFI Board.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images. For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 09:06, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Please delete my image upload Image:PTFI Board.jpg It will not be used and is not a good image. Thanks. Guest818 05:28, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Done. You can use the {{db-author}} tag for this kind of thing in the future. ×Meegs 06:37, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Philippine tarsier

Just checking with you on the rationale for removing: 1. local names 2. category: primatesGuest818 20:07, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

We tend to frown upon collections of trivia in articles. A list of local names counts as trivia, although a particular local name might be worthy of inclusion, depending on circumstances. I removed the category because category:prosimians is included in category:primates; only one is needed. - UtherSRG (talk) 20:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks again for the clarification. The widely used local name in publications is "mawmag" in Cebuano, the dialect spoken in Bohol. Maybe we can put that back. In line with trivia, the second paragraph from the top, is also trivia. Publications say most commonly found in - Bohol, Samar, etc., but is open to all and any other islands in the Philippines, Sarangani included...Including the 2nd paragraph will open the article for more such kinds of trivia, as the species may be found in other islands/provinces as well, other than Sarangani. - Guest818 21:35, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
I see nothing trivial in the 2nd paragraph; the natural range of a species is always of interest. I agree that the most widely used name would be a worthy inclusion. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:41, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
I am with you in the importance, not only interest, of the natural range of species. The 2nd paragraph is not entirely right: "For a very long time it was believed to exist only in the provinces of Samar, Leyte, and Bohol, Philippines. Tribal people like the B'laans and T'bolis have been, for a long time, reporting sightings in the province of Sarangani. Unfortunately, these reports were merely discarded as a hoax until March 30, 2002 when a pair of this tiny nocturnal mammals was captured in the mountainous areas of the municipalities of Maitum and Kiamba and was brought to the public, proving that this species exists in this coastal province." - The species has not been believe to exist only but particularly... More specifically, Proclamation 1030 states that: "...the Tarsius syrichta, commonly known as the Philippine

Tarsier, is an endemic species found in the southeastern part of the Philippine archipelago, particularly in the islands of Bohol, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao..." [[1]]... :::For foregoing means that it is open to all southeastern provinces, including Sarangani and many many more...- Guest818 22:03, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Holy Name University

Holy Name University (HNU), formerly the Divine Word College of Tagbilaran, is an institution of higher learning, run by the Society of the Divine Word or SVD, in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines. While it can be discussed under Society of the Divine Word or Divine Word Missionaries, education being one of its missions as a congregation, HNU needs a separate article. I would like to volunteer to work on it. How to redirect? -

When you click on Holy Name University, it redirects you to Divine Word Missionaries because it is currently a redirect page. If you look closely, just below the title on the Divine Word Missionaries page is a small link back to Holy Name University. Click on that link and it will take you to the Holy Name University page, where you can then click edit this page. You'll then be able to create the article. Just replace the redirect with the text you want, preview it and then save. SWAdair 05:25, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the speedy reply. I will get to work on it ASAP. - Guest818 06:03, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Holy Name University

Thanks for the speedy action on my request for help. I've started to work on the article. I still have a lot more to do. But you've made the start possible! Maybe you can tell me how I've done so far, too. Guest818 04:05, 11 November 2006 (UTC) Well, it looks great, but there is a problem. The article is a copyright infringement of the text at the university's website. The university's website even has "Copyright © 2006. All rights reserved" at the bottom of each page. Copyrighted text cannot be used in Wikipedia articles. See Wikipedia:Copyrights for a full explanation. All submissions must be compatible with the GFDL. If you are a high-level administrator at the university and have the legal right to release the text under the GFDL, take a look at the section Copyright owners who submitted their own work to Wikipedia: at Wikipedia:Copyright problems. If you don't have the legal right to release the text under the GFDL, I'm afraid the article will need to be rewritten in your own words. You can still follow the basic outline that you have, but everything needs to be phrased in your own words instead of using text that someone else has already copyrighted. SWAdair 04:53, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks again for the heads up. I will see what I can do on re the copyright.Guest818 05:02, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Coming along nicely. You're doing a good job. SWAdair 08:13, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Still learning...Guest818 08:17, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Please use edit summaries and the 'show preview' button

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. I would like to thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. However, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thanks again. My apologies. Thanks for the feedback. I am still learning, and finding my way around...Guest818 08:21, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

'Might have a new editor

Hello, again. One of my co-workers (not yet a Wikipedia editor) is from Manila, so I thought I would show him the article you're working on, Holy Name University. When I pulled up the page and he saw the title, he started telling me about the university, without even having read the article. It turns out that he went to Far Eastern University, but he knows a bit about Holy Name University, also. I showed him the articles on Philippines, Bohol, Manila and Far Eastern University. I think I might have him interested enough to start editing Wikipedia. If he does, it will be because I had an opportunity to show him your work. Thank you. SWAdair 11:35, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

That's great news!Guest818 15:41, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi! Just wondering, and curious on 2 things: how is the new editor? and what did he say about Holy Name University? Guest818 09:38, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

He really liked the Holy Name University article, and related Philippine articles, but I think the major hurdle to getting him active is confidence in his English. His English is good enough, but he seems hesitant. I decided not to push too hard, just keep showing him articles every once in a while and let him decide when the time is right. You've done quite a job with that article. Wow! I just checked your contributions. You've been busy.  :) Quite a lot of new material added to several articles. You're a wealth of historical information. I'm glad to see you've jumped right in. Take care, and happy editing! SWAdair 04:30, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm curious to know what your friend knows about Holy Name University, as you said, he started to talk about it without looking at the article...--Guest818 10:57, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

tag on references for Bohol

I have added references to the Bohol article. I am not sure about the protocol, hence this message. Guest818 08:52, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Bohol references

Hi there, welcome to Wikipedia. Glad you left a note. For a while now I've been adding references to various articles and inserting the unreferenced template that you saw, along with a reference section as a starting point for those who are unaware of these things. The main point being to increase the reliability and verifiability of Wikipedia. This will give some background: Wikipedia:Verifiability. Looking at current featured articles for example todays, J. R. R. Tolkien many of these articles have an amazing amount of refs, but one is better than none. The references section is most useful when a reference is matched to the fact(s) within the article. I've changed two external links on the article to ref types to give an example on how to do it. You'll find more information here http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Footnotes & here http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources. The aim is that the reader can match quotations and facts to published material if they wish to check the details for accuracy. So although those sites you added may be generally useful, they would normally go in the external links section since they are not yet matched to facts in the article. What would be even better is if you could put them in the article where they are most relevant. There are also templates available that define a bit better what details should be added for web sites, journals or books etc. There are quite a few here: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_templates. I haven't used those templates much myself as I had read some complaints about how they make the text harder to edit, although it does seem that they are getting more popular. Let me know if I can help at all. Kind Regards. SeanMack 14:44, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the "tutorial"...I have started working on it,too.Guest818 22:43, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

clarification on Bohol Article - LGU or island?

Just checking: the current article on Bohol refers to the LGU Bohol Province, right? It is not the article on Bohol Island which should be a different article...Please clarify. Thank you...Guest818 17:21, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, there's a different article for Bohol Island. --Coffee 00:33, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Okey, I should have checked...Anyway, I will see what I can do to check and make sure Bohol is about the LGU Province and Bohol Island is about the island of Bohol. Any thoughts as of the current contents of each right now? Guest818 03:13, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
The way I see it right now, the contents in the intro in Bohol are about the island, not the Provincial Government of Bohol. I think we need to change the title of Bohol to Provincial Government of Bohol and retain Bohol Island as well as re-direct an Bohol to Bohol Island... I don't know...Just a thought! Guest818 03:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Well, the Bohol article doesn't have to be only about the provincial government.. It should be about Bohol as a cultural, political, geographic entity (see, for example, Philippines, or California). The way I see it, the Bohol Island article should be about the island itself as geographic feature. Coffee 04:09, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Okey...I will see what I can do...Guest818 06:45, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

List of SVD Schools

I worked a little bit on the articles University of San Carlos and Holy Name University. There are other schools in the Philippines run by SVDs. Please see List of SVD Schools. Is it possible to make a stub for these schools? Thanks...Guest818 03:32, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't really know anything about SVD, but feel free to make stubs for any of these schools as long as you have some reliable sources to make them up. :) Coffee 04:09, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
The University of San Carlos is in Cebu City. It is one of the schools run by the SVDs. I really meant to write template, not stubs, like the one the Ateneo has at the bottom...Is it possible for you to make one for the SVDs as well? Thanks...Guest818 06:44, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks much! I really appreciate it. I will work on the stubs soon. Best of luck...Pahabol: if you can access a picture of USC, that will be most welcome, too! Guest818 03:10, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

SDV Schools

Hi, sorry for the late reply... here's that template you asked for. To view or edit it, go to Template:SDV Schools. To place it on a page, put {{SDV Schools}}. :) --Coffee 02:52, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Policy allows for speedy deletion of "Any page for which deletion is requested by the original author, provided the page's only substantial content was added by its author and was mistakenly created." All you have to do is tag the page with {{db-author}} and it will be deleted as a matter of housekeeping. SWAdair 05:50, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

disambiguation for SVD

Hi! Help needed again...How do you do a disambiguation for SVD to include the Society of the Divine Word? - Guest818 10:45, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Ah, the SVD page already seems to include Society of the Divine Word. Coffee 07:40, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
