Could you please comment on the IP address "New Messages" issue I posted at the end of the 152.163.253.97 user talk page, after I got notification of a new message. Thanks. --218.50.191.197 17:37, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You left me message to create an account. I've had one for quite some time (Tom Peters) but I do not always bother to log in when stumbling over something that itches me to make a quick fix. I suppose that is against wikiquette, but I'm not alone (see previous taler). TP 20040815T23:16 UTC

Unneeded pages

[edit]

Hiya. Do you still need the pages User:Grunt/Nonsensical redirect and User:Grunt/Page that links to a redirect back to itself? If not, can I delete them? — Timwi 00:39, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Go ahead and delete them; I made those in a bout of complete boredom to illustrate a point a while back, but I don't need them anymore. ;) -- Grunt 01:02, 2004 Jun 23 (UTC)

Soap substubs

[edit]

If they look really crappy, just redirect them to the show in question. That's what Lucky 6.9 and I have been doing. Leave them until someone else with more flair for writing can do them properly. Mike H 02:26, Jun 27, 2004 (UTC)

If they stay as stubs long enough, someone else with more flair for writing will be able to come along anyways. There's no need to make them redirects, IMHO, as the actors/actresses themselves deserve articles. -- Grunt (talk) 02:29, 2004 Jun 27 (UTC)

PFD

[edit]

Grunt, I reverted your edits to TheCustomOfLife's page because it looked like a personal attack. Now I'm here, it looks like you're friends? Anyway, if it wasn't an attack, it really looked like one. I don't think PFD is a good idea -- what's the point of it? Won't it be likely to upset some people? Jwrosenzweig 21:42, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

It's a joke that's gotten out of control. If you want, I can remove it (and maybe put it on BJAODN :P). -- Grunt (talk) 21:43, 2004 Jul 1 (UTC)
I personally would rather you removed it. I understand jokes at Wikipedia's expense (my personal fave was Wikipedia:Church of Wikipedia), but I think this one has the real possibility of upsetting people. If you feel comfortable having it deleted, let me know and I'll do so. Thanks. :-) Jwrosenzweig 21:44, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It has been moved to a subpage on BJAODN. Needs no deletion now. -- Grunt (talk) 21:47, 2004 Jul 1 (UTC)

re: Python

[edit]

Hi, This is regarding your comment http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:219.65.112.119 Can we atleast mention the readers that there is a language called Python exists. The java and VB pages discusses about languages like C and C++, then why can't we have Python

C and C++ are mentioned in Java because the languages are syntactically similar. Also, if the reader wishes to know more about programming languages - we have Category:Programming languages for that. Stating that Python is preferred to VB or that Java has been superceded by Python is subjective and therefore does not belong on Wikipedia. -- Grunt (talk) 18:16, 2004 Jul 18 (UTC)
Ok, I understood now. Is there any *notification* kindof stuff (that popups on ur desktop), when certain pages are modified ??
If you wish to keep track of a certain page, you will need to create an account, which will then give you access to the Watchlist feature. This will display the last edits to any pages you wish to keep track of; you won't actually be notified, but you will know if there have been changes to the pages you are looking at just by viewing the list. I hope this is close to what you have in mind... -- Grunt (talk) 18:25, 2004 Jul 18 (UTC)

Montt "protected"

[edit]

I am not an editor on this page and have no opinion on which is the correct version. I protected the page after I picked up the request from Recent Changes and saw that an edit war was, in fact, going on. As it happens, the protected version is the same as the version before the edit wars.

I suggest you and others make their case on the talk page of the Montt article and that you also post a neutral description of the dispute at Wikipedia:Requests for comment, so others can comment as well.

WikiProject Computer and Video Games

[edit]

Grunt, I noticed your contribution to the X-COM: UFO Defense article and the addition of the infobox for the game. In your summary, you noted you were looking forward to the WikiProject Video Games. I thought you'd be interested to know the project is underway and can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer and Video Games. I noticed you hadn't listed your name under Participants, so you might not be aware of its existence.

Actually, right now we're taking a vote on the standardized infobox to use. If you like, you can add yourself to the list of participants and add your vote and any comments at Rock the Vote!. :-) Hope to see you on the project! Frecklefoot | Talk 19:41, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

I have just re-stocked the Template:Opentask. Now, I am really going to bed.... zzzzZZZZ .... Cheers. -- PFHLai 05:56, 2004 Aug 18 (UTC)

Excuse me, User:Grunt, I need your help.

The Template:Opentask, as one may find in 'what links here' on that page, is often used in greetings to newbies. I have been stocking easy to handle "tasks", mixed in with some challenging ones, for the newbies. Would you mind helping out a bit, please ? I can't keep up with your rapid clearing. (If you clear pucks just as quickly, I want you on my blueline !)

Good call on the copyvio (Steve R. Nagel), but I usually let a few different wikipedians take a stab at fixing an item, or let it sit unattended for a few days (indicating a lack of interest) before replacing it. Sometimes, the items you removed from the Copyedit line are not that well copyedited after just one or two edits .... And freshly created items are often stubs, so they may be better moved down the template, instead of out. (And I lose track of things when items come and go without being logged in the Edit summary. But I won't be checking much the next little while, so never mind ...)

I am supposed to be taking my Wikivacation. And I feel uneasy about leaving the Opentask template unattended. A barren 'Template:Opentask' is not going to be useful, either as part of a greeting or part of the 'Community Portal'.

This is all I ask: Please slow down your clearing, and if possible, please replenish when removing items from the template. (I usually find them at 'Cleanup' and 'Deadend Pages'.)

Many thanks.

B-Movie Bandit

[edit]

Love the work you do and I appreciate the Barnstar, but we're trying to get those damned B-Movie Bandit substubs deleted on sight. Thanks for the effort, but these stupid things have just got to go. I'm going to revert the Marj Dusay stub and post it as a speedy not because of your work, but to get rid of it until a better article comes along. It's a matter of principle at this point. Thanks. I really do appreciate your help. - Lucky 6.9 18:37, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

re: insanity templates

[edit]

Good evening, Grunt. I read your comments on VfD about the use of the "insanity" templates. Unfortunately, the intention that the templates were not meant to insult has not proven out in practice. I can remember at least one case where the template was added with intent to insult and countless cases where, regardless of intent, others took it as insult. I'm struggling to see your point of view and to see some redeeming value to the templates. Instead, all I see is a threat to the civility necessary for the community to function. What research can I do to provide evidence that might change your mind on this one? Thanks. Rossami 21:18, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Metric time

[edit]

Hi, just thought I'd let you know that there appears to be someone vandalising the Metric time article. The editor in question appears to be pushing original research and a particular non-standard POV into this and related calendar/time articles (see their edit history: http://wiki.riteme.site/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=81.225.211.117 ). Grunt please be careful Prem Rawat is a hornet's nest

[edit]

Look here what a disinformation I found in the article that I removed yesterday. :I have removed the whole explanation by students/followers about arathi/arthi because I found Jim Heller's explanation that the arthi to brother and actors is very different from the one to Maharaji convincing. I also removed the following sentence, which is totally untrue. ::"In a handful of occasions in the past decade, students in the West have sung Arti to Maharaji." :Now read this from a Premie Guidebook, (DLM 1975) In which "a schedule is highly recommended" that includes Arti two times a day ! [1] Andries 08:04, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Surely very minor additions of material that is apparently mistakenly reverted can't hurt. Even if someone takes it that way I'm well prepared to deal with angry vandals headed out here (just see the vandalism counter on my userpage :p) -- Grunt (talk) 15:11, 2004 Aug 22 (UTC)
Grunt, I wish it was mere vandalism but it is intellectual dishonesty and self deception. The supporters will do anything to protect their domino world view because they are so emotionally invested. Andries 15:17, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Perhaps you should request page protection and attempt to talk it out with these people... -- Grunt (talk) 15:18, 2004 Aug 22 (UTC)
Grunt, I will think about but I think that again putting on Wikipedia:Request for comments list may be a better idea. The dispute is persistent and deep rooted. Andries 15:29, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Andries: whay are you not honest and explain to Steven that you are one of the main protagonists in this deeply rooted dispute? Instead of calming the waters, you keep adding fuel to the already burning fire. Putting it on the Wikipedia:Request for comments is not going to help, and you know it.... The ex-followers will not be satisfied with anything else that a complete re-write of the article to reflect their POV. They have clearly stated that in the talk page as well as in their bulleting board. And you seem to be of the same opinion, if one can judge by your actions on that article.--jossi 23:21, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)
This is exactly why I would like the article to be protected - so that we can attempt to reach some sort of compromise. -- Grunt (talk) 23:23, 2004 Aug 22 (UTC)
IMO the page needs protection again. Today may changes were made bt Ed Poor, Zappaz and Senegal that may lead the way for a stable article, but I fear edit wars will ensue as the critcis are not happy about their POV not being made predominant. --jossi

I can't figure out what happened to the page Aesop since you last reverted it. There was this weird message about it not being found in the database: see version of: 19:35, Aug 24, 2004. Looking at the history it would seem you reverted it to become an error message, but that seems unlikely. I've reverted it back to a good version. Maybe a bug? --Costyn 11:06, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

After getting an incredible 50 supporting votes, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the administrators' how-to guide helpful. Congratulations and good luck. Angela. 22:47, Aug 28, 2004 (UTC)

Acronym

I see you protected the page. Can you please protect it on a different version, before Nohat's revert war instead? Nohat's reverts deleted much info from the page. I added a note on RFC on the article while you were protecting it. File:Anarion.png 23:08, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

No need to, that page is linked to from enough places. All are done, except for "Protected page", which does not list Acronym yet. File:Anarion.png 23:14, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Err.. what are you on about?

Protecting

[edit]

I understand that one may become really pissed off by edit wars, like in Chechnya article. Please read Wikipedia:Three revert rule carefully and be more tolerant. Some people simply don't know the rules. In most cases it really helps to talk to people first. Only if a person persists in unreasonable behavior, admin acions are in order. Also, in some cases it could be more advisable to block a person, rather than an article, since blocking (protecting) an article disturbs many editors. In addition, it is always reasonable to indicate the time the page is to be protected. Thank you. Mikkalai 15:47, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

And BTW, I hope you are aware that m:The wrong version is an April Fool's Day's joke. Mikkalai 16:25, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

When things get really out of hand like that, usually people are unwilling to listen to each other or they would already have worked it out. Protecting the page forces the issue and usually helps people to calm down, I find. And yes, I know m:The Wrong Version is a joke; it helps to lighten people up and call off potential complaints of the sort. :) -- Grunt 🇪🇺 17:35, 2004 Aug 31 (UTC)
Unfortunately, at the first glance, at the beginning it looks like a valid advice, especially for people not familiar with wikipedia rules. I myself "got it" only in the lower half of the text (may be I am slow... but then, may are, especially those who wage word wars). If a person is smart enough to understand a joke, he most probably doesn't need blocking. But I am pretty sure that many may happily take an advice, e.g., to request to de-sysop someone, seriously and will not read further. Therefore I'd rather not refer to this page for people, especially fresh ones, in the middle of a conflict. Anyway, it is my opinion only, and I will not wage wars over the issue. Good luck in your demilitarization efforts :-). Mikkalai 17:54, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
BTW, out of curiousity: the vandal count on your user page incremented recently. Was it me? Mikkalai 17:56, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Nope. Someone hit the page before you removed your text. :) -- Grunt 🇪🇺 17:57, 2004 Aug 31 (UTC)
