Your work on "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe"
Hi Grey Shadow,
thanks for your help on the handbook article! I have a question to you regarding the dead (red) wiki-links:
I began linking all characters mentioned in the bibligraphy section to their own article. Though not all characters have an article yet, it seemes fitting to me, to link them all. But how linking to an article that still doesn't exist?
1. So I began to link the names only by adding brackets ("[["..."]]"), then looking if they all fit. If they were ambigeous then I added " (comics)|" or even " (Marvel comics)|". So also every dead link only has " (comics)" at the end if it will be definitely ambigous if someone creates that article (or the article without any extention, mostly a disambigeous page, already exists). Otherwise there will be only the brackets.
2. The dead links you added are always with extention (" (comics)|..." or " (Marvel comics)|..."). I "fixed" some of them earlier, because I think all dead links should be at the same format. Now you added so much more (thanks!), so I want to reach a "convention" for the site on how the format should be, before I'll edit the article again.
So there are two methodes (1. and 2., see above) on how to handle the format of dead links.
Pro for the first: It's cleaner!
Pro for the second: It's more likely that a new article about e.g. "Zaran" will be named only "Zaran" and therefore the link of the first methode won't fit. (Of course there could also be new articles WITH extentions (although not nesseccary), but that's more unlikely).
Now what do you think?
Greetings
Weapon X (de) 11:23, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Weapon X (de),
- I'm happy to go with option one.
- I think that I added the (comics) to some of the named links as I was just continuing on from the previous entry and was distracted by something here while I was editing.
- I'll see if I can find some information to allow me to write something for some of the redlinks after more sections are done.
- Does that make sense to you? Grey Shadow 12:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
- That's fine with me! Thanks! Weapon X (de) 13:16, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Welcome to Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels
Hi thank you for joining the WikiProject. There is still plenty of scope for influencing things and making your contribution count. We are about establishing standards for Novel based articles and writing articles that meet our own and others high standards, and to improve Wikipedia's diet of articles on Fiction books, otherwise called Novels. If you have any questions, do ask. Please be very welcome. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:02, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Response to question here
Wikipedia:WikiProject_Novels/GeneralForum#Infobox_Preceding_Book as the location you placed was really just for discussion of the project page - general discussion goes here - response found after question. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 11:36, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Send for the Saint
I reverted your category change on this one book because it isn't consistent with the 52 other books in this series which are all listed under the "19XX books" categories which are more widely populated than the "19XX novels" categories. Technically speaking this particular book is not a novel anyway but a novella collection; Novels WikiProject allows these and short story collections to be part of the project. 23skidoo 12:14, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. Grey Shadow 13:28, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Novels WikiProject Newsletter June 2006
Here is a new initiative for our project. You are recieving this as you have at some point signed up as a "member" of the project. Have a look at the newsletter via the link and see what you think. Novels vs. Books
If you haven't already, you might want to bring up this issue at the Novels Wikiproject forum page, as it might stop people from automatically categorizing things Year:Books which incidentally was what I was told to use and not Year:Novels which is why all the fiction book articles I've created use Year:Books. If there has been in fact consensus to change the categories to novels (and similar to the Saint situation above I'm seeing things are a bit hit-and-miss right now, for example some James Clavell novels are in one and some are in the other category) you might want to consider setting up a Bot to save yourself a lot of legwork. 23skidoo 15:32, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. Obviously you're part of the Wikiproject too -- just wanted to make sure there was consistency. And if you can get a Bot going, it'll save you a lot of time changing everything over. 23skidoo 00:55, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
New MoS for dab pages
Hello,
About your good work on dab pages, please see the new MoS about them at WP:MOSDAB (especially: no more bold for the keywords). I noticed it because I was just reformatting "Love and War" and various collateral pages, and got an edit conflict with your revision, which followed an outdated format:
Also, after editing a dab page, and if you have some time for it of course, it can be a good idea to check its "What links here" (from the toolbox on the left): most of the pages linking to it are in error and should have their link disambiguated.

Years 1900 to 1961 done
Seems to me this is a sterling peice of work. I don't have too much of a handle on how many articles that envolved. Would you be able to estimate haw many article you have worked on for this. My guess would be that there are more and more articles as we get closer to the present. Regards and thanks. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:39, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Copyright problems with Image:Torm symbol.jpg
Michael Bauser 00:13, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Please don't strike things out as they mess up the auto reoganization program. (with 1000 articles... we realy don't want to have to do this manually!!! :) Just thought I'd drop you a note. Any comments on improving the list is welcome. Things like new criteria. (should we list items needing a image?, look at {{infobox book}}'s fields for more ideas!
Oh and thanks for working on this list!!! Eagle talk 23:59, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
I responded on the incomplet novel list talk page.
I like your idea on the image thing... unfortunatly it won't get done untill next week. (I am going to make a new version of the current list today) Just posting to let you know I responded, (respond on relevent talk page as you have been doing) Eagle talk 01:05, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Cat: year novels
The short answear: yes.
Before I can do so I would need to know how we are going to find these novels. Are we going to search category by category? Could we incorporate this idea into the Incomplete infobox list and in doing so find the novels by looking in the "what links here in the book infobox template. (more infomation can be found in the provided link.)
In short, I would like to see how you would like it done compared to how I think it should be done, and come up with something that is better than the sum of it's parts. (once we decided on a methed, making the list is a simple affair.
Thanks for suggesting a new functionallity!!! Eagle talk 14:39, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. Sorry about the spelling mistakes :)
WOW!! great idea's!
I like the sound of your second idea as well! (please look at the 3 existing autolists to make sure that you are suggesting new things I think you are)
Please keep them comming. I am working on your first idea right now... plus I am adding some new features. Such as "truely" sorted lists (in alphabetic order), plus some inhancments to the "isStub" / "notStub" indicators
Let me think a bit on your first idea. (I might make it an indicator like the "isStub" "notStub" indicators are now. then all lists that I make will check for the existance of "yyyy novel")
Please please keep sending me new idea's to enchance these lists! The sky is the limit! –Eagle talk 16:07, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. can you elaborate on the second idea... to program it I need to be 100% clear on what you mean... Thanks.
New isStub functionality
Bug fixed!
Can you have a look at my Sandbox and tell me if the criteria for the "isStub" / "isNotStub" is set to a optimal location. The criteria are:
- To be marked "isStub" in bold, it must have less than 450 words (minus the number of words in a template i.e. words in a {{Infobox Book}} are not counted) and the article is not currently in a stub category.
- To be marked "isNotStub" in bold, it must have more than 450 words (minus the number of words in a template i.e. words in a {{Infobox Book}} are not counted) and the article is currently in a stub category.
- To be marked "isStub" in normal text, it must have less than 450 words (minus the number of words in a template i.e. words in a {{Infobox Book}} are not counted) and the article is currently in a stub category.
- To be marked "isNotStub" in normal text, it must have more than 450 words (minus the number of words in a template i.e. words in a {{Infobox Book}} are not counted) and the article is not currently in a stub category.
Let me know if any of the "word count" criteria should be changed up or down. Thanks! Eagle talk 16:17, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Auto worklists
Just so you know, All 3 current autoworklists are created and updated by me. If you want or need improvements to any of them, please come to me or post on the talk pages of the list pages. Eagle talk 17:06, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Your first feature has been added
Please look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Book to novel autolist#Category:Book stubs to see a working implentation of your idea. Comments on improvement is welcome!
- Note, soon I will also have a seperate list dedicated to your first idea. A sample of this can be found at my sandbox as usual!. Right now I need to make sure that the project is ok with my new addition :) Eagle talk 22:10, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- A new entry for this list will be generated each time I run a search for any other autolist!!! Trust me you will have enough work!!! Eagle talk 22:10, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
2nd idea
I think we already have a list that does that :) have a look at this Book to Novel list. By no means have all the categories been searched... but it is a start on your idea. (yes I know the page name says it only does stubs, that will change as soon as I get permission to move it.) Eagle talk 01:24, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Just about got this up and running. If you can please get envolved. thanks :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:42, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
The title is a link to the prototype of your first idea. Tell me if this is what you were looking for!
I am working on a list that will identify (book) -> (novel) articles that need moved. (this is your second idea). Eagle talk 17:26, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks... just one thing :)
I keep losing your posts! can you please post in a new section so it appears at the bottem of the page. Else I have to look through my history to find where you posted! Thanks!
- P.S. Let me know more about your second idea. Please give me what you want, i.e. what results are you looking for. (the more exact you are the easier it is for me to do as computers love specific instructions, and I hate vauge criteria... as I aways do exactly what you don't want!) Thanks for your efforts!) Eagle talk 00:59, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Grins :)
Ah! ok I finally got it! What you want to do is very easy. All I need to do is if a article is a contians selected keywords and the title has {book} in it, add it to a new list.
- Tell me if I am correct! thanks Eagle talk 01:21, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
is that a bug?
Are graphic novels considered novels? If so, YYYY books is not correct. Please clarify, as I thought graphic novels are included... but if they are not it won't be the first time I made a bad assumption! this this is just too big to know everything! Eagle talk 03:43, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I know who to ask!
Try one of these two. (I think they should be in the novel category... but if not then that is less work for me in the long run!)
- User:Kevinalewis -- I think you have met him. If not he is one of the primary people who keeps WP:NOVEL running.
- User:Pegship -- She is a librarian who's interest is in both films and novels. I have found her to be an authority in categorization. I list her second only becuase she is away right now (as far as I know), and you are likily to get a faster response with Kevin. Do note, she is my number 1 "goto" person for issues like this!
Hope that helps a bit! Eagle talk 04:13, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Graphic Novels
Re: User talk:Eagle 101#Follow on from Cat:year novels and User talk:Grey Shadow#is that a bug?
- A question for you. Would you place something like 24: One Shot, a Graphic Novel, in {cat:Year novels} or leave it as it is in {cat:year books}? Grey Shadow 08:25, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
- Based on our project brief I would exclude them - they are considerably different animals than any textual novel, something half way between a comic and a novel. We deal in Novels and Novella (or Novelettes). Other raise short stories and being out of scope. In my veiw that is a hard one to see the borders of. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
- Further thoughts, this is such a rich area my view is that it would support a whole new WikiProject, that is if there isn't already one in existance for them. I vote for leaving them as "books" unless there are appropriate "Graphic novel" stubs and categories. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Kevin about the WikiProject potential,
butfor now I would cat the item under both Category:Graphic novels andCat:YYYY novelsCat YYYY books.simply because the book is fiction no matter what the format.Just my own opinion and not policy. If/when some guideline is decided, it will be easy to find articles with both headings and edit them accordingly. Hope this doesn't muddy the waters further - ♥ Her Pegship♥ 17:26, 20 July 2006 (UTC)- Kevin makes a good point back on Eagle101's talk page. Not all fiction works are novels, but all novels are fiction. In library terms, a comic book is not a book, but a periodical. OK, I revise my opinion & concur that they should go under {cat:YYYY books} for now. ♥ Her Pegship♥ 17:43, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Kevin about the WikiProject potential,
Boogiepop and Others (novel)
I'm doing some Category's for novels at present, and wasn't sure if this is a novel, book, manga, graphic novel, or something else? Grey Shadow 06:46, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- It is a light novel. It is already categorised under 'Boogiepop', which is a subcategory of light novels (light novels being a subcategory of novels), so is probably fine as-is. Elric of Grans 06:57, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Novels
As one our most regular (and faithful) editors - wondered if you could do me a favour. I am about to be taking a real world break (from this Friday, for about 15 days) - I was wondering would you be able to keep an eye on the WP:NOVELS pages for me and respond to any enquires and questions etc. That would be a big help. Novels assessments
- Not sure if you can help with this one, but I thought I'd give it a shot: I've done a number of assessments of novels in the past couple of days and put comments so that other users would know why I gave the rating I did. Some comments appear as I presume they're supposed to (e.g. check out the Bleak House talk page, whearas some do not (e.g. Talk:Prochain épisode). It seems that another of these last now show the comments but didn't before. Maybe it's just a matter of time to update? I'll let you know if I run into any more problems.

AWB
hi there! i've noticed an edit to the article Alcoholism using AWB. the edit itself [1] is extremely minor - just some spacing really. i've noticed similar edits glancing over your edit history, like this one [2]. AWB isn't meant for such small edits; each time you save an article it produces and write/read cycle server side that can be taxing in large quantities, and in this case for seemingly trivial reasons. talk to Martin if you want to get some more low-down on this kind of thing. cheers.
