HOW UWEM AKPAN USES PHOTOGRAPHIC TO EXPRESS HIS NARRATIVE AESTHETICALLY.

According to Uwem Akpan, Ikot Ituno-Ekanem is a fictional village. The presence of Ikot Ituno-Ekanem is so real in the novel that the reader finds it very hard to believe that it does not have an existence in the Nigeria map. This method Uwem adopt literarily is a beautiful approach using literature aesthetically. Ikot Ituno-Ekanem maybe a fictional village, but it as a meaning, which is “the family or the people of Ituno-Ekanem”.

The use of photographic in literature gives the work of art more meaning and significance. Using the front cover of new york my village as a case study, there are so many things that are photographically placed in the front cover, one of which is Traffic signal, Taxi, group of people, Skyscrapers, and most importantly, the Billboard. There is the presence of the mass media in the front page; the billboard is a form of mass media which as a lot to do with this course. The title of the novel New York my village is boldly written on the billboard.

Another photographic element Uwem uses aesthetically in this narrative is the map of New York, Nigeria and Africa. If Lagoon Drinker and Santa Judessa does not believe that Ikot Ituno-Ekanem exist, then my readers need to know that it truly exist. I think putting Ikot Ituno-Ekanem on the Nigeria map is a big plus for him.
