September 2011[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added to the page Contagion (film) do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used as a platform for advertising or promotion, and doing so is contrary to the goals of this project. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Erik (talk | contribs) 13:32, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Erik. I have read the guidelines and can see why some contributions have been removed. However there are a couple of contributions I feel are valid. For the VIFF, the information on the size of the festival is useful information, as well as providing useful info on the Festival lineups. For Cliff Martinez, the reason an external link was put there was because I saw that others had put links to interviews with him in that section. The link I put there was an up to date and recent interview with him about his work on Drive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gomorra12 (talkcontribs) 10:41, September 30, 2011
I am wondering why you are linking to that website specifically? It is a good idea to draw from different sources when making contributions. Linking to primarily MUBI is kind of suspect. For Cliff Martinez, we want to avoid a link farm. I checked the links, and most of them were dead. I moved one to the talk page. It's encouraged to use links as references for the article body since it does not reflect well on Wikipedia to constantly point readers off-wiki. As for VIFF, I restored the link used as a reference, but I would encourage using a variety of sources in the future. Just Google a film title in Google News Search and use listed publications to reference added content. Erik (talk | contribs) 14:50, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. What would be best practice for incorporating information from an interview? Would it be best to then reference the interview as a source of information? I will use a variety of sources in the future. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gomorra12 (talkcontribs) 11:08, September 30, 2011
Using the "ref" tags is a good start. I like to use templates like {{cite news}} or {{cite web}}, depending on the kind of source. That way, the reference is fully described. You can see some instructions at Wikipedia:Citing sources. One final note: You can leave a signature by typing four tildes (~) at the end of your comment. Happy editing!
