Coming back

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. season article

Man if you keep writing so much about each game the page will be humungous... I tend to limit myself to one or two sentences per game unless something really important happens. Also, not sure you need the whole opening day roster listed... The standard for these pages is that once the season ends we put a roster on the page that shows everyone that played for the team during the season. (see any previous season page).. and then just list the opening day starters not the whole lineup.. Sure you can add more stuff to it but I've been doing these season articles for a number of years so i thought i'd give you my thoughts on it. Spanneraol (talk) 22:34, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the thoughts. The reason I added comments on today's lineup was that it likely was the first game of a trend that will last the whole season in which Ryno platoons players in and out, and I thought this might be a good extreme example. Font in edit interface

I have noticed the font in the edit interface does not change whether I have Monobook skin or Vector+Gadget. You posted to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) that you fixed it, "it had something to do with the override also reverting the interface font." How do I fix interface font? Possibly, though I don't have much time at the moment. I'm not really sure what the problem is, though. What is it that you're seeing? I usually see the font in an edit box as a monospaced font (like Courier New), regardless of the skin I'm using. How does it look to you? Like an Arial-type font (that is, similar to the font in the final page)? Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 03:22, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, but the Vector+gadget combo works now. Previously, the edit window's font looked like whatever font Vector is using: the gadget wasn't changing the fonts in the interface, just the reading bits. It was very not pretty. Adoptees

Hi GP. I spotted a comment you made at WT:WER to the effect that you hadn't been asked to adopt anyone for a while - I've got the opposite problem, in that people keep asking me to adopt them and I really don't have the time to do so effectively at present. Seems to me our problems might cancel each other out... If you'd like to talk to User:ForrestLyle, User:Jakesyl and User:Masssly about adopting them, I'm sure they'd be appreciative. I am not sure I will approach all of them - I generally can stay organized and handle no more than 2 adoptees at once - but I will certainly see what I can do. I reached out to a couple of people for adoption when I first arrived here but after spending some time lurking around I think I have enough resources to sail alone.I was involved in a conversation on adoption here (Adoption Suggestion) that was a little enlightening and I also got quite a lot of help from the Wikipedia:Teahouse. Hi, Jakesyl. Replying right here is fine. Peruse my adoption course and let me know what you think. Depending on your experience (and I have not done much digging just yet), I sometimes suggest that more experienced editors take only the lessons they need, and then the final exam. New editors, however, should probably do the whole course. It is all at your own pace (if you work at a quick pace, it should not take more than a month, but can take up to three months, depending on how active you are). In any case, let me know what you think, and if you would like to, I am more than willing to take on an adoptee or two right now. Go Phightins! 21:11, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
