Article Lincoln, Nebraska
Hi Hanyou23, I see we were editing Lincoln, Nebraska at about the same time today - though at the time I didn't know it. I hope I didn't mess up any of your edits. So that I don't interrupt your edits, you can copy and paste the following to the article's top of page:
{{In use|30 minutes|time=~~~~~}}
Then I won't interrupt your edits - which is very frustrating. You may have noticed I used this when I was editing the History section. I tend to edit live rather than compose in my sandbox and then paste into the article. Editing live causes problems when more than one editor is editing. However it is habit for me. I will try to add more history by using my sandbox first rather than edit live. It seems like we are the only editors who are editing the article, though I hope other editors will become involved in a positive way.
You have done so much with the article, and I admire you wanting to have the article achieve GA standing, hopefully I can be of some assistance. I am usually more of a WikiGnome - which brought me to the article in the first place. Feel free to talk or comment on my talk page. Gmcbjames (talk) 01:56, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, thanks for your kind words!... and I've learned quite a bit since you've visited the Lincoln, NE page, so I thank you so much!!! Before I hoped on board editing Lincoln in late 2013 (if I remember right), there were a couple of other editors on Lincoln... one from out in central Nebraska (I believe, who does still show occasionally) and another from Lincoln (I think) who makes some edits on a short, annual basis. Besides those editors and the ones who suddenly appear out of nowhere to undo vandalism, it's been a bit lonely on the Lincoln page (and a bit heavy to try to get everything on the article up to speed).
- The reason I like to improve the Lincoln article and try to get it to reach GA status is because of the love for my home city... I've been to quite a few places around the country and a few around the world and honestly, there is no place like home. I suppose (actually, I know) I take pride in Lincoln, so I like to try to reflect that in the Lincoln article. I almost wish I knew where you reside since it amazes me how much you know about Lincoln!... but I guess that's one of the qualities of being a WikiGnome (something else new I learned today!) - no one really knows (heheh)!
- On the earlier edits from today... nah, nothing crossed paths. I was concentrating on cleaning up the tourism paragraph and you were up in the history, so it's all good. Right now I'm making a new page on annual events, then plan on clearing that from the Lincoln page and creating a summary paragraph again, so I think we're ok for now... but if I do end up going up to the history section, I'll use the code above that you provided. I'll look more into live editing... like mentioned before, I'm learning so much recently (smiles with gratitude)!
- The usual times I get to edit is like now... when the kid gets to bed or during the afternoon sometimes (mostly at night, though) - kind'a a slow process for me, but tonight I plan on dedicating the majority of the remainder of the night on the article. Let's see where we can get it together (teamwork!)!!!
- I thank you so much again (and again)! You don't know how much help you are - really!!!!! Hanyou23 (talk) 03:02, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hopefully Hanyou23 I can help improve the article, as I think the suggestions from the GA review were quite informative and reachable. I do have ancestral roots in Lincoln and have always been fond of Lincoln. I am very surprised so few editors are involved with the article, usually a number of people look after their city - though even the article Omaha seems to have had the same lack of interest. In the time I have been on Wikipedia, I have only come across you and one other person who have the drive to see an article become either a GA or FA article after having assessed hundreds of articles - part of my Wikignomeness. I think your goal is obtainable, so keep up the great work, and I will try to help as I can- Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 04:45, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, reviewers in good faith tag and make suggestions, since it was only a suggestion and no formal merge proposal was made I removed the tags and added comments to both pages as to why the list article was created. On the flip side, anyone can remove tags and be done with it, however if a formal merge process is proposed then it is best to follow the guidelines and process from WP:MERGE. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 18:20, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Ah, thanks so much for the help on that. I was trying to follow the guidelines that I had found, but like you had mentioned on the Lincoln page (I believe that's were it was), I did not see any formal merge proposal listed... wasn't sure if there was a graduated escalation to the merge proposal or not - was playing it safe at the time...
- Hopefully tonight I can get back onto the Lincoln page - have a laundry list of things to do this afternoon (not to mention it's a beautiful day outside - will probably be having to dig holes for my wife's tomato plants -sigh-). Will let you know later where I will be editing next on Lincoln. Cheers back (with a friendly smile)!!! Hanyou23 (talk) 19:24, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- Keep up the great work Hanyou23, seems you have your hands full. The rule of thumb for lists in articles is less than 30%, though I have noticed many editors prefer less. The article now has balance between lists and text since your edits. Do feel free to add/edit the history section. I am going to work on the reference section a bit, and do let me know if you disagree with my edits or have any questions. Cheers! Gmcbjames (talk) 03:11, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry Gmcbjames, I wasn't able to get to what I wanted to tonight although I might get to a little right before it gets too late here in a bit. Speaking of lists, I might redo the parks section, too, since it originally wasn't a list and I made it into one before the GA review. Anywho, I'll take a peek at the history section shortly... sorry for my lack of attention tonight! Hanyou23 (talk) 05:30, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
Take your time Hanyou23, there is no rush - I am waiting for some reference materials for pumping up the history section 1900-present which may take awhile. There is plenty of online info for history from Prairie to 1900, very little afterwards until late 20th century, so good old fashion books may be the only resort. I fixed the infobox --established-- section as there was an dead citation in it, took a lot of time as this was one of the most difficult infoboxes I have edited, however I like learning something new. It must be an ancient infobox as there was code in it that has not been used for many years, usually bots take care of old code.
The Parks section could be made into a narrative - did you know the sunken gardens was Lincoln's first garbage dump? I thought it was one of the oldest public parks as well, if I run across any sources I will let you know. It is one of my favorite parks in Lincoln.
As you can tell, I made a number of revisions and am now concentrating on the history section. Again, if you disagree with an edit I make, feel free to let me know. Also - as you can tell from my edits I go back and correct myself multiple times. I will post on the article talk page any public information for discussion or consensus, although it seems it is only you and me editing this article other than bots - so it is just a courtesy to other editors.
Made some progress on the history section, do feel free to edit - the bones are there, so to speak, and the section still needs to be fleshed out. I have no idea of where to go for a yet to be included 21st century section. More needs to be added to the 20th century, however sources are scarce online. I will continue to add and edit and hopefully the books I have on the way will have more to add. Unfortunately, since I'm not in Lincoln, it isn't a quick run to the library. I will continue to troll the internet and see if anything pops up. I do seem to get distracted as I pop around Wikipedia while researching for the history section, it is the Wikignome in me.
You will also note I added some images, removed some (they are resting in my sandbox for the moment), and played around with placement. As text is added or removed, the images can be moved along with the changes. I spent some time looking around for images on commons, and there are so very few appropriate to the article images. I may try to obtain some images to add to commons.
I like lots of images as well, same with lists, I like lists though many editors do not. As a wikignome I have rescued lists from an article's history and created a list article. There isn't a list article I don't like thus far and I personally prefer a list rather than using categories. Well, enough wordiness from me, time is better spent on improving the encyclopedia! Tomorrow is another day Gmcbjames (talk) 07:38, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23 - I made some progress on the History section and I will be adding a little here and there, as well as cleaning up sentences per the MOS. Do you think a sub-section for 21st century should be added? I will add more to the history after I receive a few book sources in the next week or so. I made a few edits to the lead section - would you like to edit the lead now that the history section has been beefed out or would you like me to give a go? You have been the lead editor on this article for years, and I look to you for direction. I am hesitant to make any further edits to the article other than in the History section until I hear from you. If there is anything else I can assist with, do let me know. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:58, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - thanks so much once again for the help! Hopefully in a day or two I'll get to take a look at it. Over the past day to two, we've been fighting everything from tornados to floods! One more quiet day and then it looks like Saturday into Sunday will an explosive couple of days weather-wise again... not to mention the water in the basement.....
- I'll definitely will make time tomorrow to take a look... I'll apologize once again for the delay - this week has been crazy! Hanyou23 (talk) 01:30, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, sorry to hear of the bad weather with flooding and tornadoes. The article and I can wait for your input and direction once everything calms down. Be safe Gmcbjames (talk) 01:46, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, thanks for the kind wishes! Please check out the Lincoln Journal Star website (Lincoln's main newspaper) or one of the local TV stations for a feel of the state of the current weather (sighs at weather). Hanyou23 (talk) 01:56, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
This flood was one for the history books! Amazing images. I am in the California drought - we sure could use the water. I wondered where it has been going and it seems it all came to Lincoln in one day. From what I have read, the Salt Creek is unpredictable, though the newspaper said this is the worst in modern history. Hopefully the weather will calm down. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 04:25, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - yeah, I really thought that the creek was going to topple over the levee, but I think that the whole city breathed a collective sigh of relief when it crested a few inches below the top. Cleanup still going on in some areas of the city (including backed-up sewage in a few spots)... but we've finally dried out a bit for now, except for nearly an inch of rain two days ago with more on the way (sigh). Anywho, going back - they're now saying that it was a nearly 100-year flood, which I can believe with all of the new bulges in our basement walls because of the saturated ground. Honestly, you guys over there can have some of our rain if you can take it heh... I feel sorry for your state, but it's one of those "What can you do when it comes to Mother Nature?" situations. Mmmm, on the other hand, when it comes to drought, maybe I'll take rain any day~
- Checking out part of the article now and will hopefully continue with some more checking tomorrow. Also, I think there ~should~ be a 21st century section, but there's not much to put there, except for maybe the creation of the West Haymarket District, etc., perhaps weathering the great recession, maybe even mentioning the recent flood, etc. We'll see (smiles with a friendly smile). Cheers back! Hanyou23 (talk) 02:34, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
Article Lincoln, Nebraska - 2
Hi Hanyou23, I am so glad you survived such a historic flood. From what I have gathered this was the worst since the turn-of-the-twentieth-century. The History section does need a 21st century sub-section - I agree what to add is problematic - however you seem to have a handle on this - I am sure the section will grow over time as the century progresses. There is more history to add to the 20th century, so I will work on adding more text. Do see my discussion on Lincoln's talk page and comment if you wish. There are 92 people watching the Lincoln article, so maybe other editors will become involved over time. Have a great day and keep dry. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 19:22, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for commenting on the Lincoln talk page Hanyou23. We probably should wait awhile before changing the formatting of the cites to give anyone a chance to comment before closing consensus - though it seems there probably won't be anyone besides yourself and myself. The current cites can be updated/edited later. Just received The Prairie Capital from Nebraska Used Books, this will be helpful in expanding the history section - and using a short cite method will be easier for citations. So far my edits seem o.k. and are supported by the book - though as I read more I may have to change what I edited. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:50, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Nah, it's all good. I was planning on waiting anyways... but you're probably right, we'll probably be the only ones. 92 people??! Where is everybody (heh)??? Ah well, I've slowly been getting to the Lincoln page today. Earlier today, I headed out northwest of downtown and took a new photo of the skyline. Can't say that I'm overly pleased with it, but at least it's an update from the one taken a couple of years ago by another editor. I'm planning on going through the history section a little slower tonight and see of there's anything out of the ordinary and to see if I can add a few additional web cites. Let's see, the 1970's in Lincoln... I can think of a few things in the 1980's, including the introduction of bikeways and the first city lady mayor. Ah well, will do a little bit of digging later on. Hope the new book is helpful (it should be)... looks like a good one! Hanyou23 (talk) 02:46, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, I changed a photo in the history section... hope it's ok. Hanyou23 (talk) 03:57, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- The image is great and an improvement Hanyou23. Don't worry too much about citations - my style of citing and in keeping with the MOS is to cite at the end of the paragraph if the information is verified in the same source and to avoid citation clutter. I tend to under-cite and only provide citations if information is challenged. I plan on adding short-citations with the books cited. Have fun editing - and I am glad you are a photographer too!! Gmcbjames (talk) 04:25, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, the first woman Mayor was Helen Boosalis, a wonderful person I had the fortune to meet a very long time ago. Gmcbjames (talk) 04:28, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, I changed a photo in the history section... hope it's ok. Hanyou23 (talk) 03:57, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
Gmcbjames, I do love to take pictures! I do a little less than I used to, since my photo library had nearly 25,000 photos in it dating back to 2003 (and a few from a week's worth while in the U.K. in 2001-ish)... but whenever I am on a mission, I like to get the perfect shot. It's unfortunate I can't show you my photos from the two years I lived in Beijing (not planning on putting them on wikipedia *yikes!*) - they bring back so many good memories! -- I think I might have met Helen Boosalis once when I was a kid... back when the mayors used to do the book reading thing around Christmas with kids (it's a little fuzzy, but I think I did). Recently, they named the Highway 2 Bicycle Trail after her... she was a real visionary! I do remember a few years later sitting on Kay Orr's lap (around the age of 9) when I was the Czech Prince of a certain place here in Nebraska. Heh, those were the days - the days of youth (heh)!..... Hanyou23 (talk) 01:35, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, how wonderful to have traveled to such distant lands! Helen should be included in the history - so if you don't I will - she is mentioned in the McKee book. Gmcbjames (talk) 05:06, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Slowly but surely we'll get to that decade (heh)..... Hanyou23 (talk) 17:06, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Piedmont from what I know was a development anchored by a shopping center built in the early 60s - although the stately homes along South Cotner by the shopping center were built in the 30s. The 17th Street Shops area was created in the 1980s to promote the antique shops. I remember the area being called Randolph. Hartley I believe was one of the very first neighborhood organizations formed during the term of Helen Boosalis. South Lincoln meant you lived south of Gateway Mall from 56th to 70th streets. Hope this helps, it was awhile ago! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 06:05, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, nah, the South Lincoln I was referring to was a place name found on some maps from around the 1930's... although I believe, if I remember, the symbol used along with the place name represented an unincorporated village (could be wrong - need to dig through my collection again)... might have been that corner-whatever it was. I do know what you're saying, though! Piedmont - I agree... and you should see the facelift the center just received - you wouldn't recognize it! The 17th Street Shops were really from the '80's? Wow! Those buildings seem a lot older than that now-a-days, so that's a pretty interesting tidbit (friendly smile). That 17th St. area's somewhat turned into a hippyville! Randolph, I'm pretty sure, was centered at 27th and Randolph... still need to do some a-lookin'... and funny thing, I can see Gateway Mall from the back windows of my house (heh)! Hanyou23 (talk) 01:35, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, finding more about "South Lincoln" would be interesting. The buildings in the 17th Street Shops area are from the turn-of-the-nineteenth-century, antique shops first moved in, it was renamed, and then probably it has changed greatly. Randolph was 17th to 27th Streets and from Randolph to South. Isn't there a Randolph school? Never a city or settlement, maybe not a neighborhood? The division south of Gateway was a very large development from 56th to almost 70th built in the late 50s - early 60s which is why all the houses look almost the same. Don't recall the name of the development or the builder.Gmcbjames (talk) 05:06, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Yeah, on 17th Street now, there's a Buddhist/Hindu/zen shop, a bread store, a Karen market, the Violin Shop is still there and still a couple of antique stores. You're right about Randolph Elementary! Don't think I ever have subbed there. Also, sorry, it's my fault for the miscommunication - I knew what you meant the whole time about south Lincoln... I live just a few blocks from the area you've mentioned (I live north of "O" -heh). The area is known as Eastridge (beautiful area!) and to the east of that is Taylor Park. You'd be surprised how far south Lincoln goes now... it now stops at Rokeby Road - just one mile north of Saltillo (not sure if you remember that little store over on Saltillo by Wilderness Park - on the south side in-between the railroad tracks... I think it was called "The Acreage"? - I don't know, just a memory that's come to mind right now - my mother used to see some of her craft items there.....)! Hanyou23 (talk) 17:01, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Hanyou23, I added Gateway Mall - still needs some expansion - and clarifed Miller & Paine and Dillard's - the cite you used here unfortunately is wrong - a problem with newspapers at times. I added this cite here - since Jim Mckee is the city historian and the information is supported by other sources so I think we should go with 1988 as the date Dillard's acquired Miller & Paine's department stores. Also - since you are such a good photographer, would it be possible to have you photograph the giant "M" on the old Miller & Paine store for the article Miller & Paine? Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 21:17, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, will continue to expand Gateway but I remembered something when reading an article... there was a Montgomery Wards downtown when everything downtown was all the rage, but I can't remember if Wards moved out to Gateway when Gateway opened or had two stores open at one time. Seems like I remember them moving (actually, I think they moved three times while in Lincoln all of those years~) - might be something important to include whenever it's worked out..... Hanyou23 (talk) 03:53, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, there might have been a Montgomery Wards downtown, though I don't remember one off-hand.
- Hanyou23 I edited Lincoln by adding Union Airport to the article. check out Union Airport (Nebraska) and see here - was Union a separate airport on 70th? If so then the Lincoln article needs to be edited & clarified as I have it all wrong - the flying school was at Union?. I am glad you are good with maps, as with this I am at a loss. Thank you -- Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:05, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, sounds good on the change! On the giant M you're talking about, are you talking about the two in the crest, above the front entrance on O Street? Also, are there any other photos you would like me to get while I'm out-and-about?... I'd be really more than happy to get them! Might set out tomorrow to do them - we'll see how the weather is.....
- About Union Airport... I did a little looking up on this a couple of nights ago because I was a little confused... I knew it existed, but this what I understand:
- There were three early airports in Lincoln - the Municipal Airport, Arrow Airport where they made the Arrow Airplane, and Union Airport. Before the Army took over the Muni Airport, there was one airline serving it - United Airlines - along with it being an Air Mail stop. The school was also at the Muni Airport. Once the Army took over the airport, civilian airline services switched over to Union Airport, which was located roughly in-between 56th and 70th, north of Fletcher. A few buildings still remain along with the light tower beacon and if you look at Google Maps, you can still ~somewhat~ make out where the runways once were. Once the Lincoln AFB closed, the base became the Mini Airport again, Union Airport eventually closed and of course, Arrow Airport closed in-between - became the old city landfill.
- Years ago, I read conflicting information that Union Airport supported in a military capacity the Lincoln AFB during the cold war, but I now doubt that info. Hope this helps a bit... not much to change except for where services ended up going, I believe.
- Also, I've been curious for a little while now... why did you ever move out to the craziness that is of the state that you live in (says with a goofy grin)??? I'm not sure when the last time you visited here was, but it's a little less crazy here than it is out there ('ya know what I mean?)~ Hanyou23 (talk) 01:35, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- There might be some clean-up and additions to the history regarding the 3 airports.
- I moved to California for the great sunshine and the warm weather - I had enough of rain, snow, tornadoes, and the like...trading it all for earthquakes which are usually bearable in comparison though a little unsettling. I have created a new section on my talk page for images - thank you! Gmcbjames (talk) 05:06, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Gmcbjames - I don't know... I can take a building being pulled off of me (with enough advance notice) but I don't think I could take a building being crumbled in on me :p . Just my preference. Also, the seasons keep everything exciting. Too much of a good thing sometimes (warm weather) can sometimes not be such a good thing (heh)... again, personal preference. To each, their own (smile)!
I'll see if I can retrace down those sources for the flight school, etc. here soon. I'll probably do things in piecemeal..... Hanyou23 (talk) 16:47, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, actually I would be mushed in a major earthquake. During time of the year when it is hot - up to 123 degrees - we call it shake and bake. I do not like the cold at all and - with air conditioning of course - I prefer the hot hot heat. I live in a desert, so it is hot and dry. Take your time, there is a lot of information to add to the history section - I will comment on your last comment on Lincoln's talk page. I am still reading through the McKee book, it is quite interesting. Good idea to break up the 20th century section! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:20, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, ok, found this website... not the one I saw earlier:...
- ...informative... seems like there were two schools in Lincoln at the time. Will continue to look.....
- Shake 'n bake, huh?... like a potato! heheh..... Hanyou23 (talk) 17:29, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Edit - the two school may have been one??? Still checking Hanyou23 (talk) 17:40, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames (the above was a joke, sorry...)
Airports
- Here's one of the sites I found earlier:
- The Spirit of St. Louis was in Lincoln!
- ...and here's the third on United Airlines/Air Mail:
- ...so, it looks like I was incorrect about the school being at the Muni Airport.
- Will edit later after I get some things done around the house. Cheers! Hanyou23 (talk) 18:54, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Note on the abandoned airfields site the maps which show three airfields - Union - Arrow (where planes were built) - and Lindbergh (this would be the current muni-airport). I am not sure how accurate the abandoned airfield site is - I think it is unclear - though Union closed in 1964. I will check the McKee book for info. Have fun sorting this out!! Gmcbjames (talk) 19:21, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, yeah, I totally agree - meant to mention it earlier... just put it down here to try to get some ideas off of. Hanyou23 (talk) 20:19, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Paige Field - your book doesn't happen to have anything about it, does it? I found it mentioned on one other site. There's just not much info about it, but it does appear to be just an airfield and not an airport. Lindbergh is thought to be photographed at the site of a plane crash at Paige Field. Hanyou23 (talk) 05:05, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23: Lindbergh trained at the Lincoln Flying School at 2145 O street 4/1/1922 (24th & O) - owned by E.J. Sias. Sias built the building, closed the school in 1947. The Lindbergh Field was the site of the current airport. McKee p. 116 - It seems the Airport Authority used both the Lindbergh (the AFB) and Union. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 20:12, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks and welcome! We need 'ya (did a looking up of the address and it looks like the Antelope Valley project took care of the building, sadly... can't remember what those buildings along there used to look like anymore.....)! Hanyou23 (talk) 20:19, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, I tried to clean-up the text with the information we put together today - do go ahead and tweek it more. Maybe add the Arrow Air Field? BTW, always feel free to joke on my talk page, I enjoy it. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:42, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Hah, I had a partial edit started from before supper time, but my wife wanted to start cooking early, so I went to help and there it sat. Don't worry, it was only a sentence really - at the time I was trying to dig up information about Paige Field down by what is now the country club... if it was just a landing strip or if it had actual hangers, etc. I'll back up out of that and take a look at what there is now as soon as my daughter gets to bed... and then tweek it and edit in Arrow Airport as needed. Soon hopefully, soon...
- Oh, and by the way, you'd better watch out - I love to joke all the time hah!... and I'd be happy to contribute to the jokes, too (grin)~ Hanyou23 (talk) 02:27, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Good Hanyou23, I like a sense of humor. I won't edit Lincoln until tomorrow or so - I need to add a few cites to my edits, though like you either I could stop & eat or starve & edit. Gmcbjames (talk) 03:49, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Gmcbjames - Heh, when the wife says move, I move! Hanyou23 (talk) 05:05, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, great edits on the aviation text, it now makes sense. Paige isn't in the book, it may have been just a "field." Nebraska was great for learning to fly planes and still is - it is flat with fields everywhere! Gmcbjames (talk) 05:33, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Heh, thanks... if the airport section looks good for now, I think my next focus will be Gateway Mall, which will be a little tougher to do since reliable sources probably aren't out there, but I do have a somewhat pretty good idea about what has gone on there. May have to dig in to some archives.
- Gott'a love Nebraska, though... makes me sad when people on I-80 just whiz on through and say nothing is here. Gt off the Interstate and have a look! Sure, it's a bit flat with a lot of fields (when not flying), but you've gott'a look past the four lanes that take you from NYC to San Fransisco! Just my two cents anyways, sorry..... Hanyou23 (talk) 16:55, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, the city fathers decided to have I-80 on the outskirts, which is good as it does not divide the city like so many cities have been divided, on the other hand, when traveling, visitors must drive into Lincoln. There is the beauty of Lincoln! The expansion of Gateway can be added to the 70s section as it was a major step in the development of Lincoln. BTW, the city fathers purposely wanted the city not to be a pass through city and to keep it more as a town and this worked. Other cities did not fare so well with an interstate in the middle of the city. Gmcbjames (talk) 17:11, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, Yeah, when I worked at the NDOR, I dug into the archives that they were throwing out (to save space apparently) and saw the proposed route around downtown. I've been trying to find reliable sources stating the fact you mentioned, but nothing is out there! It was definitely the right decision. I kind'a laugh at the people, especially from Omaha, who gripe about how long it takes to get through the city. Enjoy the drive, people! Have a nice day looking around! 15 minutes from end-to-end... no biggie! Heh, just my two cents again..... Hanyou23 (talk) 17:29, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Article Lincoln, Nebraska - 3
Hanyou23 I should note Charles Starkweather murdered my neighbors when I was a child. I will avoid making any direct edits in the article Lincoln regarding Charles as I may not be neutral. That said, you can add him to the article. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:29, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Must have been a really hard time - I'm sorry that had to happen right near you. I know it was hard on my mom and she lived 45 minutes away from Lincoln!
- ...Will mention him eventually. It's sad to see how the made-for-TV films portrayed his girlfriend (gf as innocent, although they had to do it for legal reasons, I suppose)... totally off!!! Hanyou23 (talk) 20:24, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23 He is part of the "history" so should be included - sad as it is. There is also the great bank robbery of 30s which should be included as it was the largest bank cash robbery in the history of the US. Also, the movie Terms of Endearment should be included - I may add this & the robbery. It seems in the Terms article there is no mention of production being in Lincoln, although it is mentioned Aurora's house was filmed in Houston. Is Lincoln General Hospital still LGH? The Terms article may need editing! I think the Lincoln article has really taken shape - think of all the school children who will read & use the Lincoln article for reports --- and those who will be inspired to learn more --- this is the reader I think of. Keep up the great work - Gmcbjames (talk) 05:56, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Team effort - yay (making sure all credit goes to where it is due -wink)! I'd be doing this for years to come if the kind help that has appeared wouldn't have been (does that make any sense??? -anyways, so many thanks to you again!!!)! Bryan bought LGH years and years ago... LGH then became BryanLGH Medical Center West, which again (recently) has been renamed Bryan Health West. There was a bit of a ruckus when the sale first went through but I think that people have realized, for the most part, it was for the better since LGH was falling apart.
- Hanyou23 He is part of the "history" so should be included - sad as it is. - Aha, the robbery in the '30's would be great to add, too. Poor Motorcycle Office Majors (if memory serves)... riding past, gets shown a tommy gun, continues riding to the police station, a posse gets assembled, back to the bank and they were gone. That would seriously ruin my day!
- Terms of Endearment... Jack Nicholson... classic! One of the most missed tidbits about the film - it was largely filmed here in Lincoln. Ah well, it's just Lincoln, right (heh)???
- My personal hopes are that the reader - whomever that may be - who may be moving to Lincoln, is thinking about moving to Lincoln or is in Lincoln, can learn a bit more about the city they might be interested in. Like I mentioned before, I've learned a lot just by doing this already! Woo-hoo!!! Hanyou23 (talk) 17:24, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, feel free to take on the "great robbery." Also, the trolleys and if you want the Terms movie. Just let me know what interests you and if I have any resources I can let you know. The aviation part was just bugging me because I had it so wrong, though team work really did make it right. I am glad to help - this has been fun and that is why I edit. I am in a down period between research & writing projects, so editing keeps me busy and my mind thinking. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:43, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Gmcbjames Hmmm, I think for now, I'm going to finish out Gateway and then it can be chopped up into the '70's or however thereafter... that's something that always bugs me (depending on what it is) - when something is there but incomplete heh. The I might take on the great robbery thereafter. If you would like Terms, please do! Trollies - I know some basic information about the system, the Penny Bridges, and what General Motors did, etc., but that's pretty much it (at least that all I know for know without looking - wish we still had those trollies~)... so I'll put that one on the back burner for now. I kind'a got the feeling that if we combine knowledge as it's put down on the Lincoln page (as in, take turns in flushing out a topic - kind'a like how we did with the airport section), it's much more effective in getting all the information on... paper (for topics we personally may know a bit more about than the other and vice-versa)?
Anyways, with that being said (and this was another "Does that make any sense?!" moment), I think this evening I'll start on Gateway a bit more if you would like to start/work on something else within Lincoln for now... totally up to you (with a friendly smile - kind'a like Hy-Vee in every isle~)! Hanyou23 (talk) 18:09, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me Hanyou23. The bones are in the history (pun?), and can be expanded. I probably will add a bit there and here with the intent of fleshing out later. The McKee book - finally read through it, seems mostly focused on territorial to mid-twentieth-century. It seems the major points included thus far in the history is what it is - exception - bank robbery & trolleys. There are sociogical/cultural aspects, mostly the rootin tootin wild and wooley west Lincoln backstory - although since it is a complex history may not be encylopedic or else may be more appropriately a separate article. Have fun, eat dinner! Cheers as always Gmcbjames (talk) 20:20, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Ok, Gateway Mall done... that'll be all for tonight, I think. Had tons of interruptions, but it got there. Think most of the pictures will have to wait until Monday, except I might be able to do a few of Gateway tomorrow. Oh well... anyways, please feel free to do what you want to with Lincoln now - I won't be editing and potentially interrupting a live edit of yours (friendly smile). Sorry it took so long!
- We now have the 5th wettest May on record... I haven't seen it this green in such a long time - everything's happy! Gott'a watch out for severe weather tomorrow, though, potentially... they have the sandbags ready and waiting along Salt Creek, just in case. Ah Nebraska heh~ Hanyou23 (talk) 04:21, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, and it's going to take creativity to break up all of that Gateway info, if that's what we end up doing. Yikes (heh)! Hanyou23 (talk) 04:26, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, have a great weekend, I hope the weather stays steady and doesn't get wild out there. I will take a look at Lincoln later tonight as I am on a Wikignome mission.... Cheers & the Best Gmcbjames (talk) 04:30, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, ooh, sounds exciting! I read about all the different Wikipedia type folks that are out there - a couple of weeks ago when you mentioned such a thing... and if I would happen to fall into one of those categories, I think I would be a Wikipedian with an identity crisis. I think I'd fit best under Wikipedian Fairies... but I don't want to be a fairy (I'm a guy, man!) - I'd rather be an Elf... but I don't fit under what an Wikipedia Elf does/act (behind the scenes stuff - and I'm not easily offended, either), I think... so I gave up (yikes again with a snicker)~
- Maybe I will work a bit more tonight... feeling like it~ Hanyou23 (talk) 05:34, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Hanyou23 !! - I reworked the Gateway - no text changes to speak of as it is great - just took the text & broke it into time segments - we now have a 21st Century. May have to have a little text tweaks here and there - however you wrote it nicely to be broken into time segments. So glad to see something in the 21st century! Gmcbjames (talk) 05:46, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- I like being a Wikignome - though sometimes I become fairly frustrated as every article needs some sort of help. There isn't a tag I won't remove or an article I won't touch. I really enjoy being Bold. I couldn't help myself this evening seeing what an editor - who must never leave their computer - actually edits and the blow-back he receives. I think he is a little too bureaucratic and a little bit too full of himself though I think he does what needs to be done 90 percent of the time. It is the 10% which is problematic. This is where a Wikignome goes in and helps an editor rescue the article they have crafted by a few simple tweaks - and maybe a few rabbits out of the hat. By doing this I have learned a lot about policies, procedures, and the nature of the encyclopedia. To many editors bite the newbies - tagging is a favorite form of intimidation. Well, there I go. The wonderful thing about Wikipedia is you can be who you want to be and everyone is welcome - no experience necessary. An elf? see WikiElf - why not? WikiFairy? Just dont' be a WikiTroll! Have a great day - and keep up the great work -- Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 06:10, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Hahah, it's a good thing that you can be bold on the Lincoln page without worrying because there aren't that many editors there to potentially run into a conflict with (heh). Nah, it's all good! I haven't run into a WikiTroll personally, yet, but I've run into a WikiOgre... apparently he likes to see if my photos have been copyrighted before or not (not!). Mmmm, maybe one of these days I'll make a Wikipedia user page and put something on it - WikiElf or whatnot, we'll see... sounds kind'a fun!
- I got in four or so paragraphs in on the Lincoln page about the O-L-D/D-L-D Highway... a little too much maybe - a little too much info at my disposal to arrange and such, too. I don't know if you would mind having a look or not... I know how you worked your magic splitting up that Gateway article earlier... very nicely done! May need a few wording tweaks later on like you mentioned... but nice! 21st Century, baby!!!
- ...if you do have a look, please don't afraid to be bold and delete stuff if needed (or even spin-off/merge it with a different article)... also not sure how to split this one apart appropriately. I mean, I can and will if I need to, though, but (evil grin)...
- Ah well, anyways, thanks again in advance! The severe weather pretty much missed us today, luckily... feel back for those down in Oklahoma right now - again (frown). There was nothing at the beginning, then mother nature has walloped us big-time! Looking forward to a quieter week next week. Many cheers back!!!
- (wish I could put little emoticons on here without looking goofy~.....) Hanyou23 (talk) 00:27, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Hanyou23, I must say it was purposeful - if you haven't already guessed - I boldly edited Lincoln on my first edit to test the waters. And it was how you handled the bold edit and subsequent edits which told me you work well with other editors and my contributions would be welcome. Thank you.
- Don't worry about too much information at this point - I know we are hitting the upper ceiling for length - however - either the information can be edited down, merged with another article - or better yet - expanded into a new daughter article. We'll wait & see.
- Free free to use emoticons on my talk page if you wish. Some editors have user pages, others do not - however I find user pages helpful when I have a question about the hows whats and whys of an edit. Sometimes the user page will let you know it isn't human rather it is a bot! Other available tools do not really give you an idea of who an editor is. How much and how little you share on your user page is up to you - do remember whatever you place on your user page stays forever in the history - except in very rare cases. Have fun, and I will have a look at the Lincoln article. Now back to fighting the Ogres and Trolls - just kidding - it's usually a good faith edit gone bad, something we all do. - Onward Gmcbjames (talk) 01:53, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23 - Great user page! The Wikielf lives! I made some edits to the Gateway section - all this leads into the rejuevenation of the downtown (Haymarket, Centrium?) after retail fled to Gateway. The Stuart theater needs to be worked in - it was so marvelous prior to the remodel. Have fun with your user page! Gmcbjames (talk) 19:25, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Hahah, thanks for noticing! I've always been a Lord of the Rings fan :p (emoticons included ^_~ heh). I stayed up late last night doing it - the page is not complete yet - and had to get up early this morning to work into the afternoon up in Omaha... I'm an on-call worker :p - but it was worth it ;) . Maybe I'll also add LOTR to the user page too - we'll see :p .....
- I haven't really had a good look at the Lincoln page yet today (been busy all day @o@ ~), but did you happen to get a look at that section that was put in about the O-L-D, by chance? I tried to make it more noticeable by having a couple of extra lines put in-between, but an AWB corrected them :p . It's out of place on the timeline kind'a, but progress is being made :D . So much Lincoln history to put in ~o~ . Still, it's all good 'n fun ^^ !
- A kind of a personal question for 'ya... you don't have to answer if you don't want to. Last night, I kind'a put one and one together... so anyways, my question - did you have relatives that lived... let's say, in the area just south of Sheridan and just west of 27th???... a home that had a hidden library behind a map at the the top of a staircase? I helped a professor move out of that home once - nice place :) !... so just curious ^_~ .....
- Cheers and thanks again ^^ !~ Hanyou23 (talk) 01:55, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, and long live the WikiElf :p heheh..... Hanyou23 (talk) 01:58, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Hanyou23, I read through the O-L-D section, it is quite interesting. In the first paragraph, as a someone who knows very little about the 0-L-D - is the highway route "O" street? - adding this at the beginning may help a reader for context. We should add an image of the "gentleman's rest station" to this section as it is a very prominent historical building in Lincoln. I think there is one on WikiCommons -though I am unsure of the quality. I am not a fan of modern cars parked in front of historical buildings to illustrate a historical point in an article - just a preference.
Your guess is close to where I was reared in Lincoln. We lived very close to the house you mentioned - I am a fan of all the homes in the area - it was a who's who of Lincoln at one time - and they were the great houses of the time, it is still a favorite area in Lincoln for me, and one of many fond memories. The house you mentioned sounds magical - a 'secret library' is awesome - I think I remember this house on the loop off of 24th. One house on Sheridan has a bowling alley in the basement! I used to sneak into the garden of the Abels house off of Sheridan - it was magical on almost a half a block of land. One of my favorite parks is off of 17th near the Capitol (did I get that right Capitol?) - I think - is the Hazel Abel memorial park, a very small park - probably the smallest park in Lincoln.
Again, keep up the great work on Lincoln and have a wonderful day...Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:34, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Ah, you could be right about the house off of 24th... the one I'm thinking of is right at the southwest corner of 27th & Sheridan... I was told by my professor at the time, that the house was the former residence of the owners of Miller & Paine... so that's what made me connect the dots ^_~ heh. The house was beautiful... I believe we were only moving a few things out of the library (two of us from her class)... and we had to be careful >.< !!! She was selling or had sold the house, so we couldn't bump a wall for anything >< . Our fellow classmates thought we were silly for volunteering but we had the last laugh... a volunteer job turn out to be a hour and a half long paid job - $100 for both of us :D . She didn't have to do that ^_~ .....
- I know the Abel residence you mentioned, I believe... there was a nickname for it about thirty years ago or so... I think it was called the Gnome Gardens or something like that... having trouble finding the video right now, but it was a hotspot for skateboarders back in the day (not me :p ) because all the ponds were drained, etc. and it was so big, no one would know you were there. Saw a news article in the paper a year or two back that someone has finally taken up on bringing back the property to it's former beauty. Good news, thankfully :) !...
- (I would have loved to have sneaked into there myself if I could have had the chance ~o~ ~)
- Abel Park is still there... my daughter has preschool near there and they had a field trip to the park... I haven't been there personally (driven by it many times, through >_> ), but the pictures I've seen make it look beautiful :) . Lots of history in that area :o . Unfortunately, much of the south bottom area have gone down hill since apartment buildings were allowed to be built, but a task force has been put into place to study how to revitalize the area with it being what it is :p . Hopefully they come up with some good results ^^ ! The area around Sheridan and Irvingdale, though, still is in it's stately glory :) .
- It's still a shame that the trolley was removed from Sheridan... I know the city would like to put in a trolley of some sorts downtown again - I think there is a study right now studying the feasibility, but money is always the problem :( . For the short term, though, they're bringing back a 21st Century version of "Molly the Trolley", to take up the Downtown Shuttle route... to look a little more downtown friendly :p . I personally wouldn't mind seeing trolleybuses introduced - since I rode on them when I loved in Beijing and they are whisper-quiet nice :D ! It'd be cheaper than putting in rails ^_~ ~ Hanyou23 (talk) 04:52, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
Images for Lincoln related articles
Hi Hanyou23. Thank you again for offering to take some images around Lincoln for Wikipedia. The article Miller & Paine needs an image and after sifting through all images on Wikimedia Commons not one could be had. An image of the building and one of the giant "M" crest -- you are right, the one on 0 street -- would be great and a fine addition to the article. In all the images available, I would say any images regarding Lincoln you could add to Wikimedia Commons for free use would be helpful and a great addition - there are many of houses for the historic sites project, however there are very few images of other buildings and sites around Lincoln. If I can think of other specific requests I will let you know, I think there was one of Gold and Company (Gold's) on Wikimedia Commons though it wouldn't hurt to have more, so far there isn't an image in the article. Have fun, and I hope you have great weather - we actually are to have some rain - though rain here means just a couple of drops! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:20, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Will do! It's looking a little iffy today on photos... an inch of rain overnight and still dreary. Why??! Hanyou23 (talk) 16:49, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Take your time, I may come up with a few more ideas Hanyou23. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:22, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Pershing Center needs an image - if it hasn't been demolished. Gmcbjames (talk) 22:18, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, yep, it's still standing... had my high school graduation there. They can't figure out what they want to do with it. It's one of those "The construction is too good to tear it down (they don't make them like they used to) but they should turn the land over to private developers but some people really want a new, main public library there but it would cost too much to build or retrofit it but the artwork on the front is priceless but it's not in the best of shape and it would be hard to get it off alone, etc." situations. Basically, it's been mothballed. Right now the Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities is looking at turning it into an all-year public farmer's market where they would even grow their own vegetables and have some apartments, but who knows what will happen. Personally, I hope they keep the building - historic... I mean, even Elvis sang there!... but it is still there for now.
- ...so tomorrow is looking good for some photos. Please keep thinking! I was thinking of also getting a photo of the Terminal Building if I can (may need to finally buy the wide-angle lens that I keep on putting off~)... but Pershing is on the list (and M&P)! Cheers! Hanyou23 (talk) 02:26, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23 Sad to hear of Pershing, re-purposing the building would be nice - though I don't understand the Josyln idea. There are some good images of the Terminal Building on Wikimedia Commons including here - however there are not any of the building's details. Most images of buildings are of the "whole" building with very few detail images. I previewed all images relating to Lincoln one day - trying to find good relevant images - and the over 2,000 articles linked to Lincoln using AWB - I made minor edits to 160 articles. I have to say, most images of Lincoln are really not so great and could be improved though a few by one photographer (I believe from Central Nebraska) are very good. Most are related to the Historic Places project. BTW, most articles linked to Lincoln have the subject of sports. On the other hand, there were some very interesting articles which were surprising and others which are no longer orphans due to the expansion of the history section. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 03:46, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Unfortunately some of these buildings, like the Terminal Building, are a little hard to get into now-a-days because all of the doors are locked on the outside (at least at the Terminal). You're right, the gentleman from central Nebraska did an excellent job with his photos... as for the rest, there really isn't much. Time to get to work!... except this morning has been rainy again!!! Still is. Had a Severe Thunderstorm Warning earlier for ping pong ball-sized hail... just had pea to marble~ Hanyou23 (talk) 17:00, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, it is rainy here - though it is just drops with clouds - usually it is 108 by this time of the year! Too bad buildings are locked up. The article Gateway Mall (Lincoln, Nebraska) does not have any images! Images help and maybe you can add some to Lincoln articles without images. I will try to let you know articles I have run across without images. I think the Lincoln article can use a few more images as well. Have a fun rainy day, and dodge the hail!! - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:18, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- I am starting to use the SFN template, see my note on the Lincoln talk page. It is easy to use for citing books with the page numbers. I will try to add more cites to the book sources - and to clean up the cites I used for the 1889 history online book reference using the SFN template and adding page numbers. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:22, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, here you go... I was Downtown for about an hour today and took a number of pictures... these are the first two I've uploaded so far (with many more to go :p ~) - but anyways - as you requested ^_^ (I tried the best I could to get a good shot of each :p ~):.....

Gmcbjames, no problem... I had a lot of fun today :D ! I may do more on Wednesday, we'll see :p (I'm thinking about it ^^ !). Here are more photos which may or may not be of any use :) :.....

Gmcbjames, those are them! Now I need to work my way north of "O" and other places, too, sometime soon. I was a little constrained for time towards the end, so I was a little more careless about how I took photos, unfortunately :( . Sometimes, though, it is what it is :p ~_~ heh~.....
Ah well - until later, please have a good night and cheers ^^ !!! Hanyou23 (talk) 04:30, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- Great photo work Hanyou23. I cannot say how much I appreciate your work personally and how much having good images adds to the encyclopedia. I added the comfort station to Lincoln. I never knew the station was build for O-L-D, and have wondered where it came from. What is it's purpose now? Is it owned by the city or the county?
- On WikiCommons - you might create a user page. I have a user page on WikiCommons if you wish to take a look. I see the bot picks up photoshop and auto tags the images for possible copyvios, having a user page may help. I don't know what the copyvios tagging is all about, other than it may be in just the upload process you use and may be automatic.
- As you may have noticed on my talk page, I collapse our discussions - simple reason - I use an I-Pad when I don't have access to my laptop - 90% of the time - so the text is easier to read and keep track of discussions. Have a great day - albeit at work - and I may do some editing on Lincoln in the next day or so when I have a block of time on my hands. Having images makes articles so much more interesting! Thank you - Cheers to you Gmcbjames (talk) 18:04, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
- The pictures were so good, I couldn't wait to add more. I added a couple to Lincoln, a couple to Miller & Paine, a couple to Pershing Auditorium and one to Gold's. Had a little time today to make a few minor edits to Lincoln, and added a sub-section. The O-L-D is fascinating as you wrote it - without saying so the text does indicate the development of the O-L-D led to the expansion of the city eastward. The images have made a world of difference to a number of articles. I am sure there are other Lincoln related articles without images as well and if I run across any I will let you know. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 02:25, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, sorry for the late reply... got home at 1:30am this morning to discover a note on my door (well, my wife had earlier) that said TimeWarner needed to repair part of the cable system in my house... apparently something in my house was causing "noise" in the neighborhood... so they disconnected my internet :( . Set up an appointment for 11am this morning and somehow it didn't get in their system... so set up another appointment at 3pm this afternoon... the cable guy was at our house for 2.25 hours. Stray voltage, you name it. It ended up being an old TV in the family room with the noise, but couldn't figure out the stray voltage part. Great technician (!), but you've gott'a love TWC for their great scheduling systems! Glad they didn't end up merging with Comcast recently after all :p heh.....
- Anyways, glad the images were able to be put to good use and was able to help ^_^ ! My daughter and I am planning on setting out tomorrow afternoon for more pictures :) . With the photoshop tag... since I don't white balance when out-and-about (near impossible with all of the shadows downtown and wide pictures), I've been running these photos through a tint, contrast and sometimes a color filter in Photoshop before uploading them... try to get the best result out of what I have :p (my camera is good but not the "best" :p heh~). I'll take a look tonight at creating a user page over on WikiCommons and see what I can do - thanks so much for the suggestion ^^ !
- The comfort station is now a rentable building for parties and such. In fact, I think everything at government square, minus the park, is under private ownership (I could be wrong)... I think the old federal courthouse were turned into condos. I'd have to double check about old city hall :p .....
- As far as the route of the OLD goes... I'm going to have to double check my old maps (I need to find them first in my massive map collection @o@ ~)... but I think I remember it going down Cotner Blvd. from where it hooks up with Cornhusker today (I would have to verify this - memory is a little fuzzy), then down "O" Street going west. Later, after the "New" Cornhusker Hwy. was built, I traveled along Cornhusker (where it is today) to roughly N. 12th... then it followed what is Springfield today to 11th, then 11th south to 10th, then south to "O" and then west. I'd have to double check if it split onto 9th once it got into downtown (memory again). Around that time, Business Route 6 was established where 6 once was (Cotner and "O")... that route was dissolved in the mid to late '80's. Once Sun Valley Blvd. and Grand Ave. (now Cornhusker Hwy. West - I think it was named Grand - memory >< !) was built, 6 bypassed 10th into downtown, ran down Sun Valley and the west on W. "O". Someday here in the future, 6 will be routed down N. 1st Street to W. "O" from Cornhusker, but it's frozen in the planning stages for a decade now (lack of funds)...
- Anywho, I'll double check that initial route and include it when I find out.
- Oh, and I think we might have picked up another editor (yay :D !)... I'll route him this direction for discussion if it's ok ^_^ . Cheers ^^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 03:01, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
Article for Lincoln, Nebraska - 4
Hi Hanyou23, sorry I was off dealing with Wikitrolls, so I haven't been thinking lately of the article. I should know better than dealing with trolls.
The house you mentioned was the Campbell's house (current owner of Miller & Paine LLC), it is on the loop and on the corner of Sheridan. Great house. The old Paine house is on 24th. Sounds like the O-L-D looped everywhere at different times - which is problematic in its description - I thought it ran just along O street east to west.
So glad someone else has taken interest in the article's history section. Sometime maybe in the not too future the section will be a daughter article, however I agree that may be awhile as it becomes fleshed out. The Omaha article's history section basically repeats the Omaha history article rather than being a well written lead with a "main article" link. I spotted the train wreck article the other day and thought a mention could be made. It was fine to refer the editor to my talk page for the "informal" discussion of the Lincoln article.
Feels good to be back to actually thinking & contributing to the article. I am worn out with the trolls. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more images! Cheers - Gmcbjames (talk) 21:49, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- OrbitHawk, Hanyou23 and I have been having an informal discussion on my talk page regarding the Lincoln article, so feel free to chime in. I created the redirect from History of Lincoln, Nebraska to Lincoln, Nebraska. Hopefully with all of our input, the history section will grow into an article itself. At this point Hanyou23 has been working on the Lincoln article being rated A Good Article - a process you can read through on the Lincoln's talk page. One of the main criticisms with the GA review was not having a history section, so that is how it all began! Feel free to edit the Lincoln article, I look forward to collaborating with you too. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 22:49, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames... not really up-to-date on the WikiGnome/troll battles as of late :p (never had one ^_~ )... but if I were to categorize a troll, I'd say they'd be like anyone who seeks attention - a bully, etc. I think the less attention they get, the more likely they might just go away, but then again I could be wrong :p . I'm sure I'll have my own battle coming up here soon and when I do, I'll make sure to use my WikiElven magic :D hahah :p ~
- Just as you had typed the above earlier, I was just beginning to load the pictures from today. Not as many as last time (I believe), but hopefully they do add some additional flavor to things ^_~ . I'm planning a third trip downtown soon, when it's not going to be raining :p (like tomorrow >< )~...
- Guess I must have misunderstood my professor or something :p heh. It was so many years back that I have trouble remembering the fine details of that conversation :p . On the O-L-D... once I am able to verify the original route, I'll probably just add that as "The route began as... in Lincoln", or something as such. I'm glad it was ok to refer that other editor here, too :) ... he seems like the occasional-type, so we'll see if he shows :o . Ah well, it's all good as the kids say ^_~ ...
- As soon as I'm able to (I'm negotiating the preparation of supper time right now with the family >o< ...), I'll get some of these photos uploaded and posted here :) . Until sooner than later :p heh ^^ ~
- (ah, by the way, the new census figures came out for Lincoln today... plan on ding that tonight - supposedly Lincoln's growth accelerated to something like 1.5% from last year, or about 15,000 more people added since 2010 - I'd like to think that the Lincoln article has helped with that a bit :p heh.....) - Amazing sculpture by Kaneko Hanyou23. As for the trolls, I was probably sticking my nose into something I could have avoided. I look forward to your images! I would think the population growth was due to the article - just kidding. Have a great evening, Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:06, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

- Nice photos! So, I'm not really sure where to jump in, so I'll probably just add some things here and there if I notice anything that isn't mentioned. It seems like you have focused mostly on the development of Lincoln -- this makes sense, though. Things like major weather events probably belong more in the Climate section, with maybe a minor mention in the History? --OrbitHawk (talk) 06:21, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- OrbitHawk - hah, thanks for the compliment :p . Actually, I'd think that past major weather events would fall under the history section, since it is history more-or-less... and the climate section is meant more for recent weather facts - at least that's what I think :p . It's up for discussion ^_~ ~..... Hanyou23 (talk) 19:47, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

- Hi Hanyou23 and OrbitHawk, we should remember for transparency, and to preserve the article's history, any discussions for consensus should be on the article's talk page. As for informal discussions and musings, feel free to talk here or if you wish me to be aware of a discussion just mention my user name. Deciding what is discussed where is up to you! That said, feel free to add to the article - I think major crimes which had an impact on the country as a whole are notable. Weather is problematic - as usually events are local and have a local impact which are not devastating. If the weather event - say a tornado took out half a neighborhood - like Omaha has had - it is notable or if a flood was on record as the greatest flood in Lincoln - it is notable. This is my opinion. Usually, as a guide, a historical event or subject on WP about Lincoln should be in the history section - although only a sentence or more as the subject matter has been addressed in a stand-alone WP article. In time, many subjects in the history section may become stand-alone articles and then edited down.
- Hopefully soon, I will resume editing the history section adding more "history." One area needing expansion is the immigration of Vietnamese refuges to Lincoln after the end of the Vietnam War. There is a new published book on the subject - I haven't web searched the subject - so feel to take the lead and go for it.
- Great photos Hanyou23! I cannot believe how Lincoln has changed, this has been a real pleasure for me. The Kaneko sculpture and a sentence or two would be good for the history section. The article is now at the upper limits for size, so we may have to open a discussion on Lincoln's talk page about creating a new history article. My objective and goal is to help you take the Lincoln article to a GA standing, so this is the priority for me. We may have to discuss this more, we will see as we go along.
- Otherwise, I will try to recover from real life and wiki life to march on with expanding the history section! I look forward to more images - just let me know more have been added & I can go to Wikimedia Commons to see what has been added. I am sure Gateway will surprise me! The best to all - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:57, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
Gmcbjames - Ah, the Lincoln talk page :p ! Hah, it's been so quite over there, I almost forgot all about it :p heh. Will move some discussion over there shortly ^_~ .....
I'm glad you've liked looking at the photos I've been taking so far ^_^ ! I'm not sure when you moved out of Lincoln... although I have a guess :p , but Lincoln really isn't the "washed-up, backwater, big town without an identity" that it used to be anymore ;p . I'm sure if you've had a visit recently, you'd really be surprised at what you would see ;) ! Like I've mentioned before, I'm pretty proud of Lincoln - what it is today and where it is headed :D . Only the future will be able to tell what Lincoln will truly become :o (no droughts, please >< ~)~
I left a phone message over at the Gateway Mall office seeking permission to take pictures within the mall, but it must have been an early out Friday :( . This weekend is looking pretty washed up weather-wise for photos ~_~ ... may have to wait until next week >_> . Man... and I really want to go out to take pictures, too >< ! Crazy weather this spring :p ~
Anywho, best of luck recovering from everything and hope you're able to get back on your feet soon ^_^ - health first :p heh ^_~ ~
Cheers :) ~ Hanyou23 (talk) 05:47, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23 - Since Gateway is a public space (zoning), you won't need permission to photograph unless you enter an enclosed building. As to how long it has been since I was reared in Lincoln, I must admit - your guess as to how long ago is probably right! You are a booster for the city for sure! I don't recall any major items we have discussed needing to be on the article's talk page. Probably because we haven't really disagreed. I have put on the article's talk page items which I believe should be included as they are discussions as to direction of the article and a consensus needs to be made for the change. I haven't commented on your comment on areas to expand the article on the article's talk page, so I will put my thoughts in order and do so soon. Just think of comments on my talk page as "informal" and comments on the article's talk page as "formal." You are talking to a person who cannot wear shoes after wearing flip-flops for years - so I am mostly informal by nature. Have a great day and Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:50, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - hah, I've been wearing Birkenstocks since middle school, so I know what you mean :p (work kills me in shoes >< )! I listed all of that stuff over on the Lincoln talk page because OrbitHawk was also mentioning stuff to include over on my talk page while we've had our own discussion here :p ... so I just gathered it all in one place for a consensus ^_~ . I haven't had a look over on the Lincoln page yet, but will do so after I'm done here :p .
- About Gateway - I was planning on going inside, so we'll see if I get the actual permission or not :p . If not, then I'll stick to the outside ^_~ ...
- Ah well, over to Lincoln now :) . Cheers and later ^_^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 21:20, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you Hanyou23 for summarizing areas to expand the history section on Talk:Lincoln, Nebraska and opening for discussion a Lincoln history daughter article. I will add my comments there. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 22:35, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23, I thought I should let you know the article Tourist Attractions in Lincoln, Nebraska may be considered a travel guide and nominated for deletion. My suggestion would to rename the article in the same manner as Tourism in Omaha - maybe - Tourism in Lincoln, Nebraska and to develop the article either in the same manner as Omaha or as list article with each section having a lead. Although just renaming and expanding the lead may ward off wikitrolls. It is unfortunate on WP, as articles often are not allowed time to develop. I have checked the article for other issues, and at this time this is the only issue that stands out. Arguing to keep an article nominated for what WP is not after being submitted to AfD appears to be problematic. No editor likes the experience, and once submitted some wikitrolls seem to relish devouring other editors work. I have been involved in an Afd this week for an article nominated for what WP is not - I stumbled across the article following links related to Lincoln. This has been a great learning experience for me - not a pleasant one - however probably necessary. That said, I thought I would give you a heads up. Wish I could be more upbeat and sign off with cheers - Gmcbjames (talk) 04:14, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames... sorry, I had some WikiBurnout tonight :p heh... needed to draw or do something else ~_~ :p . May need a day or so to detoxify, but I'll make some tentative changes to that page right now (man it's going to be a job ><' !)... also, I'll try to figure out how to rename it :p . Maybe that's why it got patrolled a week or so ago :o . I did do some changes to it today already, I believe... I will undo them since it looks like it took the article the wrong direction >_> ~
- I looked over on the Lincoln talk page earlier and didn't see anything new added :o ... not yet, anyways ^_~ heh~
- ...oh, and I saw that you had cleaned up your user a page a bit - unintended fallout from the WikiTroll Wars :( ??? Hanyou23 (talk) 06:01, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
- Good Morning Hanyou23. Actually I patrolled the page - I have been checking out all linked pages to Lincoln, those that are new and are o.k. I have reviewed - if not then I have made some suggestions for improvement. One of my favorite activities is assessing/reviewing articles - this is why I belong to a number of WikiProjects. Assessing and helping articles wikify is something I can contribute to WP in a positive way. As for my page, yes, it has been streamlined so to speak. There are too many 12 year old editors (and those who act like a 12 year old) with a beef towards their bosses, parents or teachers. An editor with real world cred is a target. All this was brought on by what I call the shadow world of WP. The shadow is full of circular policies, catch-22s, and unclear direction - a process of consensus mired in bureaucracy - so the only tool for saving WP from devouring itself is by being bold. The article I have been trying to keep brought this ugly part of WP into view - much like Sebastian's demise in Suddenly, Last Summer. The editor of the article, a professional, was swarmed by wikitrolls - and I doubt he will edit again on WP. WP needs editors - this has been heavily discussed at the Village Pump - and once bitten - editors leave. WP is fluid, so we shall see how it goes. Meanwhile back at the ranch - I will continue to help with the Lincoln article, and try to cultivate articles & editors.
- I see the difficulty naming the 21st century subsection - I wish I had a suggestion though at this time my mind is blank. On the Tourism talk page, make a short comment inviting other editors to help expand the article - doesn't hurt on a new article to add this with ideas as to where the article should be headed. Good to take a break - burnout is a problem with editing which is why I have stepped back for a moment. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:20, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Expanding Lincoln
Hanyou23 and OrbitHawk, I should be able to add more to the history section of Lincoln this next week. If I take on a subject outlined on the article's talk page I will add a {{Tick}} and if completed Done {{Done}}. I look forward to adding to Lincoln's history section! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:04, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23 - check out WP:EMOTE - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:21, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Sunday evening - just a minor change to Lincoln's TOC - I used a template to shorten the list as it was creating too much white space in the article. Do look at my edit to reordering the history section, I also edited one sentence about Hwy 6 - so correct if I edited this incorrectly. Note: sections shouldn't start with A or The - I still have no idea of suggestions to name the quarter of a million section. A few edits this evening - do see my comments on Lincoln's talk page - have a great day!!! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 04:46, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Hanyo23 - How about naming the sections in the history section just in a date format - this is the most common - such as 1900-1930 etc? I actually didn't expect the history section to expand to the point it is now - and growing. I would leave the first section named Pioneer Lincoln, and then use the date format for the other sections. What are you thoughts? Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 18:59, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
On a second look, I would recommend using dates for section headings beginning with Building title and leave the Pioneer Lincoln, Founding, and Establishment of capital section titles. - I have my thinking hat on. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 21:06, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23, on a third look and with some more edits (I added a couple of topics see the Lincoln talk page) - I renamed the Metropolitan section to Revitalization which is more appropriate, and then renamed the 21st section Metropolitan Lincoln. This seems to work for now - what do you think? I will add more to the history section here and there - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 18:54, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, nice additions :D !!! I'm partially-to-totally not really sure about renaming sections to years because it is so generic and boring :o . Although having names for sections can be open to interpretation, Lincoln more-or-less falls within periods that can be classified (and agreed upon ;) ).....
- The reason I preciously chose 1970 as "Metropolitan Lincoln" was because that was the year that Lincoln became it's own MSA. Since then, Lincoln has added Seward County to the MSA. I kind'a think Lincoln has become more since the MSA establishment... I was kind'a circling around the idea of something 21st named "Identity Crisis Solved" or something like that... but then again that's interpreted and involves a lot more explaining than what we have in the Lincoln article ^_~ (it all began with Haymarket Ballpark :p ~). Why is it so difficult >< ??!
- ...and in other news, May 2015 is now the wettest May on record :p ... only a few more inches to go to make it the wettest month ever ~o~ ~
- Also, thanks for the emoticon guide ^_^ . I'm kind'a old fashioned, so I'm kind'a set in my old ways more-or-less, I guess :p heh~ Hanyou23 (talk) 05:29, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, are there sources regarding the MSA affecting Lincoln's development - or was it just a statistical census change? I agree, this may have had or has an impact and should be included if attributable sources are found. It is difficult - the only historical published works are the two I have found. The McKee book is very heavy on the revitalization of Lincoln and historical progress - however it ends at around 1984 - also there is a slant on historical preservation. The only other book is on the Vietnamese relocation program (a new book) - so there aren't many sources with a critical view supported by research on the historical development of Lincoln. Although newspapers and journals are sources, there isn't much there - from what I have found - which address the question of why. See WP:SYNTHESIS. As a researcher & writer, writing for WP is very frustrating in avoiding original research as many ideas which are clear to me are not supported yet by a verifiable source. So I try to remember "just the facts Mam" as I write for WP. Frankly, it is dull writing, however it is an encyclopedia.
- I am learning your emoticons, and there is no need to change. I find it is more fun talking about an article on my talk page than actually writing the article! Have a great day - Cheerios Gmcbjames (talk) 16:59, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyo (where did you get that name?), here is a book, which I will order, Visions of Lincoln; Nebraska's Capital City in the Present, Past and Future by McKee - it goes up to 2007 and provides insights and supposedly answers questions of why - see here for information on the book. Hopefully this will help us to expand on the effects of the MSA and other ideas of how Lincoln has grown so in the last couple of decades (from McKee's last book published in 1984!). Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 18:20, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23 - I removed the "under construction" tag as we slow down - feel free to add when major construction begins again or use the "in use" tag. I probably won't be making any major revisions until next week - as I wait for the new book to arrive (it will be nice to catch up on history from 1984 to 2007 as I was not around during that time other than off and on. This will take pressure off of us as we deal with real life. I think changes will be here and there - what do you think? Let me know sections you would like me to take a whack at or other areas you think I might be able to improve. In my opinion we have done a fine job thus far. As you have images, I will be glad to insert them. After I receive the book - and you have had time to add text, I will do a copy edit of the history section. I am rambling here - quite normal for me. You made complete sense on the talk page, I do hope other editors will comment. I will be on WP off and on, so feel free to ping me (just mention my user name!). Cheers - and hopefully a dry week ahead - although I would like to see a record month rainfall! - again rambling - Gmcbjames (talk) 01:05, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Ah, where to start :) ? You are correct, the MSA was just a statistical change... found it via the Census Bureau, I believe... the MSA was created in 1970 after the 1970 census. It was a change for Lincoln, but just on paper :p . Still, it was somewhat of a "point of no return" for Lincoln's growth, kind'a :p (like you mentioned above, though, no original research :( ~o~ ~). I couldn't believe the most recent yearly census - crazy @o@ !

- Hanyou... where did I get the name :p ??? It's all kind'a young and crazy, really :p . I've been a fan of Japanese anime and manga for many years now... back in 2004ish, I was watching an anime called "Inuyasha"... a bit of an action comedy that centered around a half-human half-youkai. Loved the series - and still do to this day :p . Hanyou in Japanese means half human, half dog (the part of Inuyasha that's youkai), so I went with the handle, so-to-speak :p . When I lived in China, it translated to "Friend of the Han" in Chinese, so people there thought that's what that meant, so I was like no, no, no :p .....
- That book really looks good - the new McKee book :o ! I like his writing :) . I bet he could write a whole new book since he published the last one in 2007 :p heh! I may have to get this one :o ~.....
- ...and don't worry, please feel free to ramble anytime ^_^ (I do it all the time, especially when talking :p heh~)! Yeah, I think the "do it as we go along" approach is good... my wife has been getting on me a bit for doing too much ~_~ . Ah well, maybe I'll throw some additional emoticons your way that you haven't seen and see if you can figure them out :D hahah! Cheers and good night ^^ ! >:D bwahahah~ Hanyou23 (talk) 05:16, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
...another busy day :p ... and I see my late night translation skills stink again >< . Hanyou means half youkai - just wanted to clear that up so that I don't look too dumb :p (it hit me this morning after I was somewhat rested >_> meh :p ~). Maybe tomorrow or the next day I'll be able to get out for more pictures (sunny but cloudy today - go figure :p )... I like how you recently rearranged the pictures on the Lincoln page, the way you did ;) (did I mention that before :o ??? :p )! Hanyou23 (talk) 20:35, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- I thought it was from Japanese anime, however I didn't want to assume. It is an interesting and good user name. Gateway images will be good to add, and can wait until you have time. Your images are great and I enjoy actually trying to decide which is best to use rather than in the past when it was what was available. The article has to be neutral, without boosterism, however images can speak volumes as to how wonderful Lincoln is! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 21:13, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
It's been fun taking all of those pictures and I have so many more places in mind I want to take photos of :o ~. I saw this in the newspaper tonight, thought it was interesting :o :...
- "Bryan Foundation Chairman Dick Campbell said Lincoln today is on the cusp of historic growth, just as it was in the early decades of the 20th century."
- Think I'll try to get the Gateway pictures tomorrow, after Pioneers Park :p . Cheers ^_^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 05:03, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
- From the images you have added to commons, I totally agree with Campbell! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:13, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Hanyou23. I have been familiarizing myself with MOS cities - there is always something new to learn (or relearn). After reading style essays for cities - see WP:City structure (this is the harshest advice) and WP:USCITIES which is more reasonable. Both are "advise" essays and are not policies or guidelines. Whoops, I am so accustomed to prose timelines - which seems fine for a "History" article - seems a more summary style is best (or recommended?). I wish to see what your thoughts are before posting on the Lincoln talk page - still haven't heard a peep from anyone else - are you sure there are more than 250,000 people in Lincoln? Just joking. So....my recommendation is to summarize the history, go ahead and copy/paste the already composed history section to the History of Lincoln, Nebraska (with the appropriate edit summary). I have drafted a summary style history section based on what we have composed with the essays on style in mind - you can see it in my user space here. Your thoughts?
Just so you know, I updated the Lincoln article - oops forgot to include incorporation of Lincoln, and added the sculptors to the Torn Notebooks image and added it to the Wikimedia Commons image descriptions. I also added your image of Torn Notebooks to Claes Oldenburg. It is a great sculpture and good images!
The new book is better than the first book - and it basically includes what was in the first book plus more. Still doing a read through. Again, your thoughts - I do think the History of Lincoln article would be a great idea and it seems there is so much more for editors to add to. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 03:53, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, I just finished reading the second McKee book - and sadly the history ends at Gateway mall in 1960. I have added some information to Lincoln - not much at all from this source beyond 1990s. Found out Lancaster never was dissolved - so I tightened up the info regarding Lancaster to Lincoln. If there is a separate History article, there is a lot of information to be added - too much for the Lincoln article though - I think. I will stop adding info until I hear your thoughts on summarizing the history in Lincoln as it is too difficult to add both to a summary draft and the article itself. Have a great day!! Cheers and all Gmcbjames (talk) 21:37, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Sorry for my delayed response... this week has been a bit of a drag :p . My wife's been a slave driver since my daughter has gone back to summer school... not to mention that she's been taking some time off, so now I have a monitor here in the house during the day ~_~ . Also, yesterday I took a few additional pictures and got a little sick afterwards from the sun, so there was another lost day :p (it happens ~_~ - hope to have the few photos up soon).
- So what I'm gathering is that the summary article would go onto Lincoln's main page and then we'd transfer the current history section over to it's own page... am I right :o ? I'll have a look at both here in the next week (hopefully sooner :p )... tomorrow I head out to Kearney to work at the Shrine Bowl and will be there for a couple of days >_> . Man, I sure hope it doesn't rain like they say it will :p >< heh! Also thereafter, some family events on the calender - Ahh, too much to do, so little time to do it in ~_~ . Ah well :p .....
- Sad to hear that book's history ends at gateway >:( . I have some things in my head that I would like to add to the history section sometime down the road. Oh, on a whole different topic, I finally remembered when Lincoln started questioning it's identity :p ... it's when Gallup moved from Lincoln to Omaha :o ! Man, I sure do hope (and bet :p bwahaha >:D !) that they regret that ^_~ .....
- Anywho, will be in touch and will let you know once I get everything read and perhaps edited as needed :) . My apologies again >< ..... Hanyou23 (talk) 19:06, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23 - sounds like you have had a handful! Since the goal is working towards a GA, I will go ahead and be bold with these changes. The draft summary needs work and expansion, however in mainspace this will allow other editors to edit - and the History of Lincoln article will also allow other interested editors to go forward. We will have a lot more to work with by having a history article. With a history summary in the Lincoln article and some clean-up, I think we will be on the right tract for a GA. Then I can continue to add more and more history - and images! So unless you object I will be bold! Cheers - and have fun in Kearney! Gmcbjames (talk) 19:41, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23, I decided to hold off until you are back and have a chance to read over my suggested change outlined in this discussion (you may have to expand the discussion). On a side note - while you were away - I created the article Timeline of Lincoln, Nebraska history. Omaha has one, and so most major cities, so it was only a logical step. This is helpful, as more detail one wouldn't necessarily include in the history can be added to the timeline (minutia). I think adding the Metropolitan Statistical area creation as well as Gallup (date of opening & date of move to Omaha) would be appropriate. Do check out the O-L-D etc. road info and make sure I didn't mess up. The timeline was based on other city's timelines - I had to edit for present tense (it happens rather than it happened), and shifted wording for style. The timeline is a handy tool! I have linked it to Lincoln as a further info under the history section - and also on my draft history summary as proposed. When you can look at my proposal. If you green-light changing the Lincoln article to a summary history section and creating the History of Lincoln article, I will go ahead & do so -- then we can work on the Lincoln article, the History article, and the Timeline adding more information (though the summary history section in Lincoln should contain only a summary of notable events which shaped Lincoln into being Lincoln). Well that's it, I do hope you had a great time in Kearney & fun with your family - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:17, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - you have the green light :D ^_~ . I did a few fixes here and there... I think the summary is a good start and then will get even better when we can get some things fleshed out in the main history article - especially recent history :p . Soon I'll add some things to the Lincoln timeline - things that we can look at possibly adding to the main history article (they sit in my mind usually... and then fly up into the clouds >_> ~)... anywho, I think what you did with the summary was really well written ^_^ . My wife is chasing me onto other things now :p , but I did want to point out some things I read about Lincoln today that I thought was interesting :o :...

- Hanyou23, thank you for taking the time to look everything over - it is quite a change as Lincoln has grown from one article to three (Lincoln, History, Timeline). I will make the change today - once my brain begins to get going for the day. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:41, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

- Hi Hanyou23! You were busy in Kearney. Your images of the monument are great. The article on the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument could do with an update, and the article Great Platte River Road doesn't even have an image of the monument! I have just been fiddling around here and there - and - whoops - tried to improve the Kearney article - at least the cites I added were kept. The Kearney article is stale, too bad, though understandable as every time someone tries to improve the article they are slammed with having their edits removed without any discussion. I look forward to more images and your review of my suggestions for Lincoln. Have a great day! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 00:36, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Sorry, I know you're itching to get Lincoln done... soon, my gnome friend, soon ^_~ heh. I just have a few more photos to upload of the Kearney area, then I'll soon get going on Lincoln. Sorry again ~_~ .....

- Added the dam to Nebraska Public Power District section Kearney Canal Trail. You can see the old image in the history - it was completely dry and brown. Yours is a much better image! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 03:50, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Images - Lincoln
Hi Hanyou23, Here are suggested images which would be great to add to the Lincoln article if you would like:
- Smoke Signal - at Pioneers Park (Pioneer Lincoln) - a close-up like here
- City/County building (Government)
- TV Station in Lincoln (Television)
- Early Hwy 6 marker, if still in existence
As always, thank you! - I had some time and made some edits to Lincoln, see what you think - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 02:02, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames... hah, I was in the middle of typing you something and real life interrupted :p (several times already >< ~). Sorry for my absence ~o~ . After a week or two of going "almost all out" on the Lincoln article, real life started catching up and demanding attention :o ... so, real life has had to take priority for a while ~_~ . Probably will so for another few days before I can really focus with a laser on the Lincoln article again >o> (sorry >< !).
- Today I was planning on going out and taking more pictures... but again, real life got in the way :p heh (it's always good to help it a friend in need ^_~ )... but it ended up being a real, dreary day anyways, so it was probably for the better :p . Tomorrow I plan on going out for an extended period to take pictures - it should be a beautiful day, for a change :D . I managed to take two today, so I'll list them here shortly... but as for tomorrow... when you say the TV station here, which one are you talking about :p ??? We have three now ^_~ heh. I assume 10/11 KOLN/KGIN (CBS)... but there's also NET channel 12 (PBS) and KLKN channel 8 (ABC). No NBC and probably never will be, but that's just fine ;p heh.
- City-County Building... the historical one (currently the Hall of Justice) or the new one???
- US 6 sign... I can give you a newer one, but Nebraska pretty much removed all of the existing, old signs back in the '80's :( . There's still a few here-and-there of some various highways, but very few anymore ~_~ . It's sad :( .
- A few days ago, I uploaded some historical maps of Nebraska - one here:
- ...not sure if they would help with anything or not... but if they do, I can give you links to the others I uploaded :) .
- ...and here's one of two photos I took today here :p :
- Anywho, until sooner than later and hopefully soon I'll be able to look over some of that other stuff you mentioned above :) ! Cheers ^_^ !!! Hanyou23 (talk) 03:26, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

- I know what you mean - real life does have a habit of...being real. Don't worry, the Lincoln article isn't going anywhere soon. I am just tweaking here and there as I can & adding history. On the images, the current (new?) city county building, The old 10/11 - is it on Holdrege? would be great or any which have a photo presence. Too bad about the old 6 signage, at one time there were cement markers along O (I seem to remember) - but that was when dinosaurs roamed around. I really enjoyed the Zesto image - it brought back many a memory. I thought you had taken it today as it wasn't there earlier! I wouldn't mind the Woodman building - though I don't know how it would work in the article. Have a great time, enjoy real life even with the bumps...Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 03:40, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - was out for about 4 hours today... get ready for a barrage of photos :o !... about 21 :p . Break time! Hanyou23 (talk) 04:02, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, gott'a hit the sack early tonight, but in quick reply to what you said above... yep, there's a new County-City building, built in '99 if memory serves ^_~ . The photo I took is just ok... may redo it later, we'll see :p (the kid was getting tired :p hah~). I now know what U.S. 6 markers you're taking about - there are only two left in the county that I know of... I took a photo of one today and hope to have it uploaded tomorrow. The Zestos photo was taken yesterday ^_~ ... it's still there :D heh :p (thought you might like it ;) ~) and 10/11 is over on Vine (you're half a mile off, but no problem of course ;p~).
- Well, I got a little over half of the photos uploaded tonight. Most of the photos were ok in my opinion, some were so-so ~_~ (my daughter's legs can only go so fast for so far before she starts to wear out :p heheh...)... but it was a fun day :) . The rest to be uploaded tomorrow ^_^ . Cheers ^^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 05:24, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- Great images Hanyo, I bet your daughter could outpace me anytime, what a trip around town! Though I would imagine it was fun for her - something to do & kids like doing. Have a great day - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 16:42, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- Is the Hall of Justice next to the County/City Building? Wasn't the Hall of Justice the old County/City building? I seem to remember the Hall of Justice building - was it built in the 1960s-70s? And this is where I need a book, though you are a wealth of information! Gmcbjames (talk) 16:49, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Hah, this is where I need to begin to look things up because that was before my time :p heh... but, this is how I think it goes: The old County-City Building (now the Hall of Justice - really, it's named the Justice and Law Enforcement Center... I had the wrong name - a.k.a >< ~) was built around the time you mentioned and the old Lancaster County Court House was just to the north. A short time after the 1967 County-City building was finished, the old court house (sadly) was torn down and turned into a parking lot. Court was then moved, I believe, to the old Federal Court House, which today are now condos. The new County-City Building was built and finished in 1999 just north of the 1967 building (where the parking lot was)... there were problems with layout configs in the old building, etc. After the New County-City Building was moved into, The 1967 building was converted into a courthouse/Police HQ/Sheriff's Office/etc. (the Lincoln Police were moved from their 20-some year "temporary" home at 233 S. 9th St. into the 1967 building and I'm afraid I can't tell you where the Sheriff's Office moved from :( ~). Also, The Lancaster County Jail was built or expanded to the south of the 1967 building sometime before 1999... the address for that building is 605 S. 10th St. Within the past couple of years, the jail (with controversy - the Lancaster County Board just kind'a does whatever it wants... I have the feeling that someone who knew a Commissioner owned the property the jail now sits on, but it's just a theory :p ~ the problem is that travel expenses to the Hall of Justice with prisoners for court - which was non-existent before, increased horribly with the new jail way out there while the parking lot to the south was available for the old jail expansion - and the board didn't take into consideration full renovation costs of the old jail, either - oh well, what can you do :p ???~) was moved out on to W. "O" near SW 40th St. They are now renovating the 605 Building into Probation offices and others since the "Hall of Justice" is running out of space. Also within the last couple of years, Lancaster Emergency Management moved out of the old 1967 building and into the 233 Building. I also forget if the 911 Center has plans or not (were they going to move into the backup 911 center from the old 1967 building :p ???).....

Gmcbjames - Hah, I told you Lincoln has changed quite a bit :p . This is just west and a bit northwest of U.S. 77 and Warlick Blvd. (where the old U.S. 77 bypass around S. 14th Street & Wilderness Park would cut back into Lincoln towards the state penitentiary... there's an intersection there now where the bend was)... just on the outside edge of the city. I wouldn't be too surprised that it will be part of the city within the next 15 years (most of the area around the temple are acreages). Anywho, there's one other Vietnamese Temple in the city... see if I can get a photo of it later :p heh ^_~ ~.....

Hanyou23 The images are great - brings so many memories back for me - I had a key to Morrill hall as I worked there when I went to UNL in the Geology satellite library. At night walking through the front hall was rather unnerving! There was a spiral staircase which connected the two floors of the library together - and I remember all the maps (from the GSA) in the wooden cases. Didn't know a thing about geology, however it was better than the botany/biology library where students would hide snakes in my desk. I'll take a rock over a snake any day! Have a great day, and I will share some thoughts about the article's improvement later with you. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:21, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

- Gmcbjames Well, I'm afraid that's all of the photos for tonight... I know you might be a bit disappointed with the lack of photos of Gateway Mall and I'm sorry :*( . After looking at the photos I took today, I (and my wife whom I asked to help decide this time :p ~) nixed half of them because they weren't up to standards ~_~ ... it's hard to take photos of the outside of a mall :p heh! Tomorrow I'll set out again... not sure I'll hit up Gateway (don't want to freak out security too much :p ~) but I'll pick some other places to take pictures of - Gateway will still be on my list of things to do :) . Still haven't heard from the management about going inside... may have to call them back ~_~ . Cheers ^_^ !

- Hanyou23, I added a couple of images to Economy. Gateway would be difficult, almost impossible to photograph - so maybe an image which would best express the development - a long shot cropped? So many choices now with your images added to commons!
- The second book on Lincoln arrived today, so I will read it and then add to the article. Hopefully it will give me some insight on the development of Lincoln after 1980. We will see! I wish we had the rain here...say hello to your wife, and do give my thanks to her for helping select images for the article. Gmcbjames - Well, that's it for tonight :p ... heading off to Kearney tomorrow ~_~ . Anything you would like me to take a picture of in that direction while I'm off that way :) ? Cheers ^_^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 05:37, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
- Kearney could use some images - maybe you took some? All the images are historical and the infobox image isn't great - in my opinion. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 01:43, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
- Scratch that, seems there may be some ownership problems with Kearney which is sad as the article needs major updating and improvement. Editors with ownership problems hurt the encyclopedia as - like myself - editors tend not to edit those articles - we just move on! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 06:25, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames ... I've recovered for the most part :p . I only have a few photos from out west, but will post them anyways, for the fun of it :p . I do have one of Lincoln that might be of some interest :o ... it's the first one listed below with more to come ^_~ . Today it's 96° here in Lincoln and tomorrow it'll be in the 90's again :( ... no fun being outside >< ! Then rain thereafter >_> . I hope to have some time to get to that Lincoln article within the next few days :p ... like I told someone last night - I wish I had 36 hours in a day :p heh ^_~ . The Shrine Bowl was fun... of course both my wife and I had to work, but it's all a part of what we do as a living (for the most part :p - live TV never pauses for anything >o< ~). The day before and after were nice, too :) ... 11 years and counting between us two :D ! Anywho, I've probably said too much now :p ... time for the photos ;) heh~
- (the Shrine Bowl ended early with roughly five minutes to go in the fourth quarter... a severe thunderstorm hit Kearney - the first time the Shrine Bowl has ever been rained on in it's history :o !)

- There is nothing more beautiful than a thunderstorm on the prairie - though driving is a rough task and if hail even worse. Today there are clouds. I did have a stray drop of moisture hit me and that is all the rain we had - the drought is perplexing. I become excited when I see sprinklers on (we aren't allowed to water during the day and can water only 3 nights a week). Too bad the game ended early - though a thunderstorm - in a stadium? might be a bit dangerous! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 00:47, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames You're always welcome to come back here to the land of water :( ... at least, that's the way it seems right now :p . On my way out to Kearney and back, stopped at the U.S. 34/281 interchange at Grand Island... could you believe, all four sides of the interchange had water standing like lakes :o ??? All the way east, too, from the interchange to the last branch of the Platte was nothing but water. Unbelievable this year >< .
- At the game - although they were calling for pingpong ball-sized hail to hit, we saw none :p ... just big drops and thunder ~_~ . They had to evacuate the stadium, though ;) . Always makes for an interesting game :D heheh!
- You are totally right - a thunderstorm on the prairie is such a beautiful thing :) . In Kearney, we fell asleep and throughout the night listening to the sound of thunder and the buckets of rain as it poured :p . Forget air conditioning that night - we had it natural, coming through the window ^_~ . I'm a storm spotter more-or-less, but hardly go out due to keeping my family safe here at home :) . At least I keep the ham radio stuff going when I can ~o~ ~
- I see that you are into art :o ... man, my mom - the retired art teacher, has such a collection in her art room ~o~ ... from all over the world @o@ ! The nice thing about knowing art, from what I've seen from my mom, is that a person knows priceless pieces when the piece (or pieces) only sell for a few bucks :p (sellers not knowing what they have ~o~ ). My mom has a few things that are totally insane >< ! I'll go into more detail sometime later if you're ever interested ;) ... honestly, though, crazy stuff XD !
- Aren't you into the native stuff over where you live :o ???... seems like I remember that before you revamped your user page :/ . My mom has an endorsement in Native art... always cool stuff ^_^ . I've never really known where I fall into the great scheme of things art-wise :p ... sometimes a musician here, sometimes art on paper there :o . Right now I'm getting art lessons from a friend in Argentina - learning a certain way of drawing that's poopular with the kids not-a-days ;p heh. Ah, I'm getting way off topic now, but just wanted to mention the above at some point in time :p ^_~ ;) ~..... Hanyou23 (talk) 03:28, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23, art is life! Maybe a bit of a cliche - profound statement, however I cannot imagine a life without art. I have a degree in art history and design as well as sociology. Not an artist myself, I enjoy art and my main interest has been in California ceramics - especially studio ceramics from the 1950-60s and industrial ceramic manufacturing companies (not the technical aspects of production, though I have a basic knowledge). I have had the privilege of knowing, interviewing and writing about Southern Californian ceramic artists from the 50s-60s (and a few Northern CA). Basically, I have learned if you keep busy at what you love, you live a very long fulfilling life - as the artists I have known are quite active with their art up until the day they die. I once thought of being a teacher, however I didn't have the patience! Art teachers seem to be out of fashion for schools - or so it seems - as art programs are cut - which is extremely short sighted and sad.
It is good to have many interests and varied interests. One cannot have enough art in life!! Lincoln and Nebraska has been fun for me - a diversion from my normal train of thought - and so many memories. I don't think there is a city/town in Nebraska I haven't visited at some time in my life. Nebraska is my roots so to speak. So this has been fun and I look forward to expanding the history - and if you are still up for it - getting Lincoln to a GA standing. Cheers and all Gmcbjames (talk) 22:47, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
I added the Gateway sign to the Gateway Mall article and added more images to the history article - it is so nice to have images to work with!!! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 02:43, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - I'm so short on time tonight ~o~ ... never enough hours in a day :p . I have a few more photos to upload - six in total. I'll probably get to uploading all of them by tomorrow sometime... and tomorrow I'll also reply to the above :) ... but for now, I'll get started on uploading these and then will get to wherever I get to next :p heh. A wonderful philosophy, isn't it XD ak! Hahah :p ~.....

Great images! The police images are interesting - maybe add to Lincoln Police Department? Though the LPD article is a mess at this point as the article was gutted due to potential copyright issues (seems most text came from the LPD website). So many projects, so little time! Thank you for your hard work and effort in photographing Lincoln - so many images to choose from!! Feel free to share what you wish and comfortable with (everything will live on forever on these talk pages!) I enjoy our conversations very much. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 00:59, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Thank you much for the kind words - I enjoy our conversations, too ^_^ . Here's something I've been working on all day (like you say, so little time ~o~ ...) - finally got it uploaded :p . Pulled it out of my iPhoto Library of nearly 25,000 photos, thought I'd contribute this one to the cause :) ... took the picture in 2012. I could have sworn I had a better photo, but oh well :p . The Arrow Sport at the Lincoln Airport:...
- I took a photo of the info sign about the plane... something I didn't know - the Arrow plant where they made the Arrow craft was locates where the former Goodyear plant is now (I forget which company owns the Goodyear plant now :p ... is it Continental or something :o ???)... I had thought that the plant was over at the airport itself >o< ! I must have just been jumbled up about something somewhere along the line :p ~...
- I also still plan on replying to the other stuff and getting a look at the revised stuff here soon :p ... *sigh* I still would really like about 36 hours in a day, that's all XD hahah! Oh well, until later :) ... cheers ^^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 06:02, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Expanding Lincoln
Hanyou23, the changes have been made, noted in edit summaries, and on both talk pages. Do look it all over - probably needs clean-up. I hadn't realized I had to write a Lead for the History article! Sketched one up - added an image - ?? - all is up for expanding, editing, and changing - I do think more images can be added to the history article and I know where to find them - smiley thingy here. Until later (I want to respond to some of your comments though I didn't have as much time as I thought this afternoon!) Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 21:00, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
- Here are the three articles: Lincoln, Nebraska - History of Lincoln, Nebraska - Timeline of Lincoln, Nebraska history Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:12, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Hanyou23 - An editor made multiple changes today to the Lincoln article (BTW from Kearney - ooops) - mostly cosmetic with image placement. I reverted the changes as best as I could and then added a discussion on Lincoln's talk page taking into consideration his edits -- so do check it out and comment if you wish. I also made some edits based on his edits - like adding |alt=refer to| caption to all images (as I noted on the talk page). I don't think his good faith edits added up to much (the image placement wasn't my taste), and I don't think he was aware the article is being revamped and is a work in progress. It was rather startling as no one has made any edits other than bots, you or myself! Hopefully, he will add to the discussion on the talk page. We'll see I guess... Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 21:22, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Had some time this afternoon - actually trying to avoid some other work! - so I added text to the Colleges and Universities section to beef it up a bit. Also I added some more of your images - the Kaneko sculpture to the History/Revitalization section as it shows the beautification as envisioned by Boosalis and the city boosters. Also added the MoPac trail image to Parks. Tweaks here and there - I will add some more of your images to other articles & try to let you know where! Have a great day! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 00:36, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Hanyou23, I closed up the image discussion as it was difficult keeping track of two conversations! I added the Arrow Sport image - it is a great addition to both Lincoln and History. I added more airport text to Lincoln from History as - frankly - air travel was an important part of Lincoln's history in relation to the US. Do have a look at all the articles - it is a lot, and do comment on the talk pages if you wish. I will try to add more to the talk pages, though our informal conversations are more of a pleasure for me rather than the more robotic style of comments on article talk pages. The images are fun - though it isn't easy for placement - I use a widescreen PC, Mac Airbook, and I-Pad to see what the article looks like and it does vary greatly!! Stacking on the right is the worst solution. Do check out the panorama images I added to History - and do tell me what church is in the center of the bottom panorama - is it St. Mary's Catholic Church? BTW, it is beautiful inside! I think my favorite image is Lincoln Police Officer - did he pose for you? Have a great day - don't stay up so late at night trying to fit in another 12 hours for a 36 hour day! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 22:40, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Hi! Those are great panoramas :D !... first about them :p ... this is what I see :o :
- Photo from .5 block north of "O" on 9th - upper left, University Hall (with a flag on top); upper-right of old city hall, the Lincoln Building; to the right of the roof of the Lincoln Building, the State Capitol with St. Mary's in-between and St. Paul’s to the lower-left of that (white tower); far upper-right, the old Lancaster County Courthouse.
- Photo from the Capitol - left-center, old Lancaster County Courthouse (to the left of the three smokestacks); lower center (and you are right!), St. Mary’s; to the left of that, possibly old First Baptist (if there was one :p ); above it’s steeple, St. Paul’s; above-right of St. Paul’s, the old Federal Courthouse; to the above-left of St. Paul’s, the Lincoln Building; far above the right corner of St. Mary’s, University Hall.
- I had seen the photo from near 9th & “O” before (can’t think of where from :p ) but not the one from the capitol, I believe :o . They are a great addition and pretty cool ^^ !!! I see that they were just added to WC, too, maybe :o ???
- Thanks for the kind compliment on the LPD officer photo ^_^ ! Yeah, he did pose for me… was pretty cool :) . Also had his permission to upload it to WC, too, so it’s all good :D . Those new uniforms are spiffy, aren’t they :) ? I guess French blue was going out of style with the uniform makers, so the PD was having trouble trying to get colors to match :( . Ah well, it’s all for the better ;) …..
- The weather has been so bad lately >< … nothing but rain :( (thus no time for photos ~_~ ). Had three inches again the other night… the city was watching Salt Creek closely. It came up to flooding stage and closed several roads on the southwest side of the city. This is my favorite place too look at state of Salt Creek, here :p (compiled by Public Safety Director Tom Casady):

- …and more rain over the next week ~_~ :…

- Yeah, I did see the Kearney guy come in and do some things a day or two ago :p … he actually, I believe, worked on the Lincoln article prior to my arrival on Wikipedia :o … and then when he saw me working on it, his focus went back towards his area of Nebraska. As I remember, he likes to direct more than to get consensus, but I never really had a problem with him :p (probably because I was brand new at what I was doing and just followed directions :p hahah~)…
- You’re pretty much a Mac guy - good man :D heh. That’s quite the variety of degrees that you have :o ! I was an art major at one time… when I started out, the art department started a new class that was brand new and “revolutionary” :p … supposedly modeled after a class at some prestigious university back east. It combined the first year of art, architecture and interior design students into one class… called “Visual Literacy” I & II. It was an epic failure ~_~ . 75% of all first year art major students flunked out at the end of the year and I was one of them >< (the class was too demanding - a new project everyday with pretty much a week’s deadline each and no teaching whatsoever >< ~). Unfortunately, the class kind’a continued sticking a thorn in my side about the whole art department :( … I originally had wanted to do what I called “computer graphics” - what the folks over at George Lucas’s operation was doing with the (at the time and horribly made) new Star Wars films. UNL didn’t have it “yet”, they said, so I was funneled into a general art major. Wasn’t really for me after that VL class, so I transferred over to the Geography Department… still need to finish someday ~_~ (only have one more year full time after all of my major changing including a music minor but, well, family comes first for me now :o ~o~ ~)…..
- Ahywho, that’s my story :p … but those drawing guys in Argentina are drawing me back towards art again :p @o@ >< heh!!! Darn influences :p heheh (I’ve pretty much always have been into art my whole life anyways - photography and music are just two ^_~ )… so who knows :p . Like you say, though, you can never have too many varied interests :) . I’ve done such a variety of things since I graduated from high school, including teaching English in Beijing, etc… it makes life interesting :) . Currently I work for a TV station here in Lincoln - love it :D (a different kind of art :p heh ^_~ !~)!!!
- …and I also totally agree :o - like George Burns said, you’ll live a long and happy life if you enjoy what you do in life :) . Very true ^_^ ~
- Art here in Nebraska hasn’t been eliminated yet, luckily @o@ … it’s still an important component of the school system. I’ve heard about what they’ve had to do out west with art programs because of budget cuts and mandatory nationwide learning of rocket science - very sad :*( ~_~ …..
- I still plan on taking more photos and getting the Lincoln article to GA ^^ !!! So much yet to take here in Lincoln - if only the weather would work out >< . Ah well, I’ve spent a coupe of hours working on this long reply :p (sorry it’s so long ~o~ )… hope to get over to the articles to have a look at :p - I know I must have missed replying to something here or there above (sorry >< )… but time, hopefully and thankfully, is on our side, so we have more time to chat :D . Cheers ^_^ !!! Hanyou23 (talk) 03:29, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, your art education experience sounds awful (dreadful?). I am glad you have found inspiration from the Argentina guys - South American art is only now being discovered here in my part of the world. Sounds interesting! I think I am mostly a jack of all trades and a master of none, though I do enjoy a challenge and learning something new! Life has too may fun parts and I have enjoyed experiencing a variety. Teaching in Beijing sounds amazing. I have been a traveler myself, though never too far outside the boarders of the mainland. I have lived on the east coast and the west coast and of course - in between! Lincoln was always a stopping off point for me, until my mother died. Now I have been a pain for my family as I won't travel to Lincoln - yes I have many many relatives in Lincoln - I am the only one in three generations since immigrating to Nebraska to actually leave Lincoln. Lincoln is the best place in the world to rear children, family does come first - I never have sired children, though I reared my sisters who are like my own children. Everyday they make me proud as I reared them to be their own independent selves - though I must say they could call once in a while! Nah, actually one is visiting this weekend which makes me extremely happy, though it will only be a day or so (tiny violins play at this point).
- Do take your time and look at what we have completed thus far - I have made notes on all talk pages - mostly trying to keep track of what has been done and what still needs to be worked on. If you have suggestions for improvement, do let me know. I look forward to images...your pics are fun for me as the social media, as what it is, seems to be just plates of food, pets, and far away expensive vaca's - really...when did slide shows of vacations become interesting rather than a joke? Life continues to amaze me. Later & cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:48, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames Hahah, that's why I try to stay as far away from social media as possible :p (in fact, I believe there isn't a photo of my face out there on the net anywhere :o - and that's the way I'd like to keep it >:D bwhahah~). More photos incoming ^_^ - seven total :) :..... Hanyou23 (talk) 03:10, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

- Gmcbjames Well, that's it from our little adventure from yesterday :) . I think I'll be able to do a few more things on Wikipedia tonight, then it's off to other things :p . Please enjoy these photos and I hope that a few brings back some memories ^_^ ! Later ^_~ ~ Hanyou23 (talk) 02:21, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
Hi Hanyou23, the Children's Zoo pics did bring back many memories. I cannot believe the crooked house is still standing! Saw your edits on Timeline - I am in a little bit of shock about the State Fair being moved from Lincoln - this is quite sad as it was such a tradition since it first began (this should be noted in History - I will try to add it). Though times do change. The State Fair was a staple of my life back then from the time I was a child - it was an annual event not to be missed. Many memories - this is where Kings (the restaurant) first began making it's signature hamburger and onion rings. Now I believe Kings is just a small place on Cornhusker Hwy - if still in existence - at one time it had two locations on O street, one in Bethany and one on South 48th (they were the Pantry) until sold off. Oh well, at least the train is still chugging along at Children's Zoo! Have a great day - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:15, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames, yeah, I've been adding things as they come to mind - so that I don't forget ^_~ ... this new timeline is really handy :D !!! It was a great idea of yours ^_^ !
- State Fair Park... it had actually become kind'a a sad place :( ... they state neglected it (the "let's cut taxes for farmers and just hope everything else will fund itself" state ~_~ ... actually, not that bad :p , but close >_> ~), so it was really falling apart ~_~ . I think they did a study and found that it would cost more to renovate the park than to move it (I think :o ). Plus attendance was waning because they kept on upping the entrance fee in order to bring in bigger acts but still it was all the same... just poor management on their part >< (the heat doesn't help with higher prices, either ^_~ ~). The thought was - if they moved the State Fair further out west, then those from western Nebraska might attend it more and it would survive. Luckily, it's worked out for the most part ;) ... except for muddy parking lots :p heh. It was for the better :) .
- I do have childhood memories of the State Fair, too, but the prices kept climbing (my family couldn't really afford it... I was just a kid, but I think they started charging by how many people were in a car instead of by car)... and then in the late summer Nebraska heat, there wasn't really a place to cool off (air conditioning was still a luxury at the old park :p )... so we quit going all together ~_~ . All that's left of the old State Fair is the 4H Building, the Industrial Arts Building (which UN tried so extensively to kill - community intervention at it's finest ;D !... UNL didn't make the same mistake twice with the old Cushman complex, though :( ~), Devaney (naturally :p ~) and the old horse arena (now and has been for a while "The Ice Box"). ...but there's the Lancaster County Super Fair to go see now :D heh~!
- Kings, now that brings back memories :D ! Loved going there when I was a kid - there was nothing like it ^_^ ! Nah, sadly, Kings closed out years ago... Amigos bought their menu (still a source of Cheese Frenchies at least ~o~ ). The Kings on Cornhusker has become a used car lot... the Pantry moved up to Bethany sometime during the '80's, then closed (SSW corner of N. Cotner/N. 66th/Starr, correct :o ?... such good food, too >< !)... Do you remember where the old Kings were on "O", by chance :o ??? I'm trying to jog my memory :p ... I have a bit of an inkling of them being on "O", but if I could have a reminder, I might be able to remember ;) . I also think a Kings moved down to 9th/10th and South... could be wrong :p , but that building's now gone, too :( . Really so sad to see them go... such fun places :*( ~
- Heh, the crooked house :p . When the zoo was expanding... twenty years ago now? Anyways, they were originally going to tear it down but the community had such a hissy fit and people demanded it to be saved :p . Zoo said to raise funds for it's move across the zoo, and the community responded :) (somewhere upwards of a million +). The barn was too structurally unsound to save... but the Crooked House - it took a crane to move that thing it was so heavy :p (and the cutting down of a few trees ~o~ )! Good thing it still stands :) . Leo's my favorite ^_~ . Also, I think the train's double lap around the zoo now is two miles :o ~.....
- Like mentioned before - good memories of all ^_^ . I'll keep on adding to the timeline as I think of things - the best method I can think of right now - to jot things down for more recent events :o . Ah well, until later :) (it rained another several inches overnight, by the way :o - unbelievable >< !!!~)! Hanyou23 (talk) 02:25, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, also, here's another I uploaded today - a bit different :p :.....

- Hi Hanyou23, when Kings expanded from their first drive in (somewhere around 16th on O street, they opened a huge restaurant at 48th & O - it is now the Petco (I looked on Google Maps!). Ah cheese frenchies! I am glad they saved at least the Industrial Arts building - many a boy scout meeting there! I am also glad they saved the crooked house - though I must say it seems a quite bit expensive! I see the city completely screwed up the intersection of 27th & O - though since the city expanded northward on 27th it had to handle the traffic. Is there still T town? It is one of the oldest neighborhoods and was once very poor. At one time - this is a long time ago - when redlining by banks was allowed, T town was the only part of town a black person could rent or buy - sad but true. I am glad Lincoln has become more racially diverse and am very proud the city is a city for refugees. Much has changed. Now....I cannot get cheese frenchies out of my mind! What a world, cheese frenchees at Amigos and Miller & Paine cinnamon rolls at Runza. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 03:47, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - hi! I'll reply to what you typed up above later tonight :) ... but first, I have some photos for you :o . You were wondering about T town... well, was there today (just barely north of there, actually... time and a tired child were not on my side ~_~) - so I thought I'd get some photos for you :) ! When I get the chance, I'll head back and go south of Vine and also get some more of up north... but, (I hope) you are pleasantly surprised ^_^ ! The area sure has changed from when I was young :o ... explanation coming later :) ! (five photos total incoming)~..... Hanyou23 (talk) 02:30, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

- Hi Hanyou23, missed my usual Wednesday wikithon of editing as I went to escape the 115 plus degree heat to enjoy the breezes of the ocean - of course sans tech gear. Such a nice respite. Thank you for the Warrior medal, this is my first. The images are fun- 27th north of O has changed for the better. Who was Elaine Hammer? With the heat wave I will be stuck indoors so I probably will entertain myself with editing. Nice to hear of excitement for you - this is the best of diversions! Have a great day - until later - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 16:36, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

- Gmcbjames, oh, that sounds so wonderful to be by the ocean >< (been to the Pacific twice - once in California... oh, the air smells so good compared to the Gulf >< !)! Then again, the rolling plains are almost as majestic :p heh. 74° here right now... had rain again which brought down temps :p (.6" according the the NWS). Yeah, yesterday I had such a busy day ~_~ ... even had to go over to my parent's house late to reset some circuit breakers, so I was beat ~_~ . Didn't feel like doing anything last night :p (nothing >< !). I took four more photos yesterday... think won't do any additional today since it's cloudy... but I figure that I'll take these pics while it's still nice outside and before things start drying up >o> ... then once it gets hot, I'll really dive into the editing :) .
- Anywho, let's see... Elaine Hammer - she helped develop/raise money for trails in and around Lincoln for two decades (according to the paper) and it was always her dream to see a pedestrian bridge over N. 27th. She got it ^_~ heh. Going back to your previous conversation... about 27th & "O" Streets intersection... well, they did what they had to do ~_~ - it's the third busiest intersection in the city :p . With the old intersection design, traffic was backing up with left turners... so they did a safety study and thought this design would improve crashes. Well, it didn't, but it did help with left turns a bit. What I still don't get to this day - why do they allow the left turn signal to stay green for only (what seems like) five seconds??! Stupid - make two left turn lanes and then halve the time the arrow is lit ~_~ . Genius :p heh ^_~ ~
- I have a very vague memory of Kings being at 48th & "O"... I know before the current building - before it was a Petco, it was a super small Best Buy :p ... and a Kings around 16th & "O", really :o ? Hmmm, I wouldn't have a clue :p ! Of course, Mid City (now Performance) Toyota was located down there at one time, too... that's when my parents bought their first Toyota - back in '75 when their brand new Duster or whatever it was died on the street as they rolled into Mid City's car lot... it was the second brand new American-made car to die on them in two years, so they bought the first thing in front of them - a Corolla :p heh. Mid City said that they worked and worked on that car's engine but could never get it to start again >_> ...
- Oops, I'm getting off on a tangent again, sorry :p heh. Anyways, what else?... T town :o . Yeah, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who knows it by that name anymore... it has totally changed. Getting rid of the vacant used car lot at N. 27th & Vine, the thrift store north of that, the liquor store north of that, the factory and MoPac north of that a bit, problem houses along... they have totally cleaned up that stretch from what it was in my memories @o@ ! What's even neater is that the refugees and immigrants of Lincoln have opened new shops in some of the older buildings - fixing them up and reinvigorating the area at the same time. I could talk all day about the changes in the area :p ... but a few days ago, I did find this nice article detailing the changes :) :...
- I remember going to that thrift store when I was a kid and my mom holding onto my hand so tight in the parking lot. So different now-a-days, really ~o~ ~.....
- Heh, a strange world where you can buy what now where, isn't it ^_~ ? Cheese Frenchies, mmmmm XD !!!
- I forgot a number of days ago - they did save several other buildings at State Fair Park. They saved the old State Arsenal... but also several of the old building at the old prairie school site. The old school moved out to Pioneers Park - to the Prairie Center, the old train depot moved out to the Lancaster County Fair Grounds - owned by the Lincoln Model Railroading Club... I'm not sure about the rest, but one more I do know they did save... when they were trying to figure out what to do with those old building before UNL took over, they coincidentally discovered that the first building ever built in Lancaster County (before the village of Lancaster) was located on the site @o@ ! So they moved it out along with the school to Pioneers Park, too :p heh. Quite the find, huh ^_~ ?
- And that Crooked House operation - if I remember right (I may not), but it was quite the operation, so it may have costed that much. I have the feeling it was $1.4M, but of course that all was on paper back then, so I'd have to go down to the city library to find it on microfiche :p meh ~_~ ~.
- Anywho, time for a couple of pictures (hopefully), then I have to go pick up the kid :p . Sorry I babbled on long enough ~o~ . Until later ^^ !

- Gmcbjames - Well, that's probably going to be it for me this night >< ... got things to work in ~o~ . Hopefully tomorrow I'll be out getting more photos - we'll see :) . Oh, by the way, I wish I would have had the keys to Morrill hall :( - would have been so cool >< ! I did have classes on the fourth floor once or twice with my geography classes - pretty interesting storage :o . Speaking of, it was announced a few days ago that their will be a multimillion dollar renovation of Morrill Hall, that will open up the fourth floor once again to visitors :D (first time since the 1920's... it may have been a donation or donations - maybe $14M :o ???). Pretty exciting news for that cool place ^_^ !

- Well, I thought I was done :p ... here's another news article I saw tonight which I thought was interesting :o :...

- Hanyou23, Morrill hall back - way back - was like out of Harry Potter - I spent a summer setting up the Geology/Geography satellite library. I worked nights along side stuffed specimens, in dim light before the florescence was installed. The building was ancient and so was the library. The spiral staircase would sway as you went up and down. Usually it was just me and the security guard at night in the building. I am glad the building is being upgraded and saved. I can't watch Night at the Museum movies without thinking of working there! This is probably where my love of libraries began. I have had the wonderful opportunity of researching in amazing libraries from the Library of Congress to small private libraries. Of course at Morrill hall I was teased about the critters coming alive at night - I have always been rather gullible and when young an easy target for teasing. Thankfully everything was stuffed unlike at the Biology library! Great images - hopefully the weather will permit you to document more - Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:08, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames... back from taking pictures tonight... need to sort through them, but tonight I need a break ~o~ ... think I'll do a little drawing tonight :) . Tomorrow I might begin to look at what-is-what... I guess you can call this my evening by the ocean :D hahah. Maybe tomorrow or until later ^_^ ~ Hanyou23 (talk) 03:53, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, sounds like some fun - I added events to the timeline (historical) - the events were gleamed from articles in the encyclopedia - it was a good way to link articles - you can check the history to see the additions. No big whoop. All high schools were added (including Pius X). Starkweather, the Train wreck, buildings, etc. Take your time, there is so much to review - I will be organizing where I think we are and what we need to address/accomplish etc. You will note I added Health care to Lincoln - do flesh this out if you wish & add etc - I just tried to get it started. I have checked off items completed on the talk page. Well there you go! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:22, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Tomorrow I might begin to look at what-is-what... I guess you can call this my evening by the ocean :D hahah. Maybe tomorrow or until later ^_^ ~ Hanyou23 (talk) 03:53, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
Gmcbjames - sorry for my absence ~_~ . Been busy recently :p ... family doctor appointments (wife is also pregnant :p - might have mentioned it before :o ~), get-togethers with my brother's family, a trip here-there, Fathers Day stuff, business stuff, etc. ~o~ . Also, in recent days I've discovered that my drawing skills have really got bad since I've been strictly focusing on photos, the articles and whatnot over the last week to two... so over the past few days (when I've had free time :p ), I've been working to get my skills back up to speed again since I've been forgetting some of the skills with the drawing style I'm doing >< (my drawing teacher has been a little disappointed, too ~o~ ~). So over the next few more days, I'm going to concentrate on drawing quite a bit more (sorry) so that I don't loose everything :p (it's actually been a little frustrating with my drawing recently since I'm all thumbs :p >< heh~)... but I'll slowly begin to upload the photos I took a number of days ago - a bit at a time so that I can continue some drawing :) . I'm sorry to disappoint you, but hope you do understand ^_^ . Plus having my daughter home this week from school - does not help :p heh. Anyways, here's he start of some photos... ten total that my wife liked... and here they begin p (by the way, what does it mean to have a page patrolled :o ???... I still haven't figured it out :p - saw the two emails this evening after we got home and was thinking you were trying to get my attention :o ... or maybe not :p heh ~ anywho ^_~ .....):
(one other note... drove by the old Kings building on Cornhusker Highway tonight and saw that someone just tore it along with an adjacent building down :o - ah well >_> ~.....)

- Hanyou23, I thought you may be back to drawing with less time on Wikipedia - this is probably wise - and taking breaks from editing is really a good idea. Congratulations on another child! Oh my, you will be busy!
- Patrolled means the page has been reviewed by another editor other than editors who have edited the page. If I run across a page with a link at the bottom indicating the page has not been patrolled, I mark the page as patrolled, so it clears away work for new page reviewers who have quite a backlog. Of course if I run across a page which has problems I tag it appropriately or submit it for deletion. I noticed your motorcycle image on commons when looking for an image for Arrow Aircraft (I added the Arrow image), and saw it was linked to a userbox. Great work on userbox creation!! This is the artist in you. Did you create the Warrior award as well? If so, great work - it so much more interesting than "medals" or "kittens."
- I have been editing here and there. On Lincoln, I have mostly cleaned up dead links - with a little bit of proof editing. I may tackle the intro on Lincoln in the next week as this is one improvement I see still needs to be done - mostly expand the intro. On History nada - on Timeline I added quite a few entries. Otherwise just being a wikignome with improvements to various articles.
- Again, do take a break, no rush as far as I am concerned. I probably need to focus more on real life myself! Have a great time, and I am so glad you are back to drawing! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:28, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - woke up this morning and saw that I got hit-up by a troll (I guess you could call him that :p ~)... who is probably right ~o~ . Please see here ~_~ :.....

- Hanyou23 What a way to wake up! I tagged the smoke signal with {{PD-US-no notice}} since it was before 1977 and after 1923. The best way is to respond to each request & tag the image if it falls between 1923-1977 or else was before 1923. I learn something new everyday!! This I was totally unaware of. If you need any assistance, let me know. It is hard to sign off with cheers... Gmcbjames (talk) 16:59, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- Rebeka at the well is a new replacement statue made in 2005 by another artist other than the original statue - see this link. Such a shame as the original statue was wonderful. Lincoln may be o.k. as it was sculpted in 1939 - see this link. The other public art works seem to be made after 2000, so they probably will be deleted. I made a comment on the commons page for Lincoln. Have a much better afternoon and get back to drawing!! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 19:05, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Gmcbjames - thanks for backing me up there ^_~ . Well, spent a majority of the evening trying to contact artists. Got ahold of the family member of one by phone by chance, but if I don't hear from the rest, it's fine... it just cuts down on how many more photos I can upload from the ten >o< . It makes me confused... can I upload the fountain at the rose gardens, as seen here???:
http://lincolnite.com/images/uploads/WIL_10292012b.jpg
It has a sculpture in the middle, so even though the majority of it is a water feature, can the copyright be claimed on the sculpture itself??? This is good example why I think some of the copyright laws are broken today. I have one copyright (strangely) and even I believe it shouldn't be valid for... how many years after my death??! I also believe this is one (just one of many :p ) of the reasons why the income disparity in the country is the greatest it has ever been... because people can't build off of other peoples' ideas and those who hold the keys continue to bring in the fruit (not what the original founders had in mind as far as copy protection went... from what I know - which isn't much :p heh). Just my two cents ~_~ .....
Anyways, back on topic :p ... I guess a little regular WikiElf showed up in me today >< ... I don't get offended easily, but this time I felt it with this guy, even though I shouldn't ~_~ . So earlier today, I kindly repaid him with his kindness, by tagging a few of his sculpture photos with this soft code :p :...
{{Not-free-US-FOP}}
...I know I probably shouldn't have (a bot would have tagged it with that code eventually, anyways), which 99.9% of the time I don't because it is not me (offended - especially vengeful)... but I didn't really like the way he said it in his explanation - "Permission or delete" >< . Of course, this might have to do with English possibly being a second language of his, but still >_> ..... I don't know ~_~ .
Anyways again :p ... I'll probably only upload one photo tonight. Man, that was a long lead-up to what I wanted to say @o@ (sorry >< )!
About the userbox... hah, I totally agree with the stars/hearts/kittens thing :p >< ! There's an option up there to make your own... so that's what I did :p . Found a fitting photo on commons and worded it right :p . Glad you like it ^_^ !
Also, thanks for the kind words on the userbox :) ! I saw that motorcycle there and had to take a picture of it :D . The artist in me, huh :p ? Hahah, yeah, working on it ~o~ heheh :p ^_~ . It was a fun, little deviation into something new ^_^ ~.....
...and thanks for the congrats on the second kid :D ! Actually, my wife is into her third trimester already, so now she's entering the helpless phase again ~o~ (can't think of a better word to describe it at this time >_> ). Nah, it's all good :) . Another girl >< - I've been cursed by women :D hahah! A boy ~would~ have been nice this time around... but like they say, as long as it's healthy, right ;) ?
About the original statue in the Sunken Gardens... yeah, the people in the city had a fit when those kids (if I remember right) decided that they had nothing better to do than to destroy stuff :( . Glad they found an excellent artist to help replace the old one :) ...
Ah well, one photo arriving in 10 to 15 minutes :) . Thanks again for all of your support today ^^ (then onto drawing :p - still working hard on trying to get back up to speed :o ~)!!! Hanyou23 (talk) 03:20, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

- Hanyou23, I would have never known about sculptures - actually public art sculptures - not being free use. I disagree as it is -- public art -- hence it belongs to everyone - however the lawyers came up with this one for commons. I believe it is 70 years after your death when the copyright ends. This art copyright is fairly new - notice in reality TV images of art work and even t-shirts are blurred out now. In CA - anyone selling art has to pay the artist a percentage of the sale no matter when the item is sold or resold - auction houses dislike this the most though anyone - even in a private sale - must first seek out the artist or pay into a fund for the benefit of the artist. Art seems touchy now.
- You are right, regarding the fountain sculpture, because it is a sculpture unless it was made prior to 1923 or from 1923-1977, according to copyright policy on commons & wikipedia, unfortunately it cannot be used unless permission is granted for free use.
- As for being tagged, I am so in sympathy with your feelings - and yes the language used was less than desirable - short & curt - though this may be something lost in translation. My unsolicited advise is to stand back after being tagged by another editor, take a very deep breath, and at a later date respond - i.e. fix the problem if possible or contact the editor and politely ask for advise on how to fix the problem. You made me laugh as every editor is guilty somewhat of expecting other editors to adhere to rules and at the same time also not adhering to the same rule. The editor who tagged the images is an Admin - and is very involved in a project to address the issue of England changing copyright to include all buildings and public spaces as protected - hence not usable on Wikipedia. He asked for editors to support having banners on Wikipedia letting people know this may happen and was shot down at the village pump. Hopefully Europe will not move in this direction though you just cannot predict. Don't worry about tagging his images - it is only fair as what is good for the goose is good for the gander.
- Maybe the sculptors will give permission. I am worried about the Kaneko sculpture & the notebook sculpture images. Archie's image may be able to saved by having Morrill hall sign off on using the image. The public arts commission may be able to give permission for city art to be used on commons.
- Another Girl!!!, congratulations - girls are easier to rear than boys and girls always adore their dads. Your wife has my sympathy - both for suffering through the pregnancy and having two girls to contend with! The strolling garden is amazing - and I am very sad about the demise of the water bearer. Have a great day and I will keep an eye on the images being contested. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:22, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - Thanks for the kind words :) ... so I didn't end up drawing tonight - I ended up reading up about this stuff :p . The one thing I'm having a little difficulty understanding about architecture... a photo of the building is permitted after 1990 if taken from a public place... but this line is confusing me:
- For buildings completed after December 1, 1990, freedom is given only to photograph such a building, and individual style elements (such as gargoyles, and pillars) are protected, and photos are only allowed for buildings visible from public places.
- ...so (please pardon me - I only speak two languages... English and bad English :p )... what is it trying to say??? Gargoyles and pillars are protected under copyright law-not to be photographed exclusively or that said objects are allowed to be photographed freely under FoP Architecture??? Man, do I feel stupid sometimes >< . The reason I ask is because I'm debating on putting {{PD-US-no notice}} on the Woodman close-up and on Pershing (already have one on the Woodman photo)... having a hard time trying to find alternative resources about this topic ~o~ ~.....
- Ah well, once I get all of these sorted out, I'll take a step back and see what happens :p . Bunch of *oopsy daisy* if you ask me :p .
- ...and after some looking up, I discovered that the Lincoln-Rail Joiner sculpture is actually owned by Sheldon now (rights, to reproduce and all). See where I get there.
- Torn Notebook... yeah, that one worries me. They want me to fax the request - according to their website >< .
- Archie - not too worried about. The artist is in all kinds of lawsuits right now... don't want to get tangled up with him :p . I already have a wider one of the plaza with Morrill Hall behind it (and with him in it), so I'm hoping that that one will slide...
- Kaneko - it's a little hard to take a photo of a public square with the main centerpiece right in the middle, isn't it :( ? If it get's flagged, then I'll try to seek permission. If ultimately taken down, a wider shot might slide by, from what I read...
- ...and x2 :p ... really, paying an artist for selling an artist's piece that you already own :o ??! Never have heard about that here yet. I know for a while they were trying to do the same thing in the music industry, but it went nowhere thankfully :o . Since I work in TV, I do know a little bit about the blurring of stuff - but seriously... sad, sad, sad ~_~ . Sometimes you really do wonder where things are going, don't you :p ??? Like Thomas Jefferson once wrote (paraphrasing): "Once a person has an image or idea in their head, how do you erase it from memory?" If it's on paper (or digital), I guess it's not too hard :p hah >_> !~

- Hanyou23, The Woodman & the Pershing are from 1923-1977 - {{PD-US-no notice}} is the right template. The gobble-gook policy is badly worded using the word "protected" as protected you would think applies to protected by copyright - however after reviewing the legal it actually means protected by not infringing upon a copyright. If built after 1990, the objects (gargoyles etc.) if they are in public spaces (including i.e. an auditorium) may be photographed without infringing on any copyrights. For buildings prior to 1990 you can photograph and use anything including non-public spaces with the exception of the actual building plans. Hope this helps...Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 17:40, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - hope I'm not sounding sour - I'm trying not to be... sorry if I am ~_~ ...
- Oh, I've heard from another artist :D ! Working with him via email :) ..... Hanyou23 (talk) 20:04, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Hanyou23, no not at all - we are human (last time I checked). Most editors just call it quits when hitting a road bump. I am glad you are working through this and admire you for doing so! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 20:25, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - hahah, here's another human moment for 'ya :p ... a question, really ^_~ (a not-so-smart one ~_~ ). When I look up the record for "Noos":
- ...it says it's administered by the City of Lincoln (owner)... but when I go to look up the copyright at the copyright office website, I can not find it. If there is a copyright (by the artist), it should be at the copyright office, shouldn't it???
- Also, I can not find one for "Rebekah at the Well" (at copyright.gov)... what am I doing wrong :( ? Hanyou23 (talk) 04:34, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- An update of what's what so far :p ... Four artists have been contacted so far... two have given permission by email (in the final stages hopefully), one has given verbal permission (written is coming soon) and one... I think, has denied permission but I am waiting to hear back to confirm... the photo was one of your favorites, I believe :( . First, though... as I have discovered (maybe :o ?), I need to figure out where the copyrights are >< heh :p ..... Hanyou23 (talk) 05:03, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, original artwork isn't registered as a copyright. It is governed by copyright law though. The artist has the right to their work and to it's use - the same is for photographers. Photographers typically will put their name and the words "all rights reserved" on their work along with permission contact info. Artists on the other hand typically just sign their work. Their signature preserves their copyright to their work. Many artists go the extra mile and date their work, as well as title their work. To use an image of an artists work, or to reproduce a photographers image, permission is granted in writing. Very few, if any, artists or photographers will actually register their original work and aren't required to do so. Permission can be granted by email, and the email is considered the same as an original signed document. I am not a lawyer - this is actually a refrain I tend to use a lot - however this is my understanding of artist/photographer copyrights. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:41, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- In regards to Noos, the city of Lincoln owns the art work and all rights of use to the art work. Permission for use of an image of the art work can be obtained from the city's representatives. Depending on the terms of sale, the artist may have reserved the right for reproduction of images or for the reproduction of the object itself - and if so, then permission for use of an image of the work may be obtained from the artist. Usually the owner of an art work will tell you if permission for photographic reproduction must be obtained by the artist. This is my understanding. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 05:51, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- Ah crazy stuff :p - thanks for the clarification ^_^ (now I remember learning this in college - man >< !~)! I'll try to do some calling around tomorrow to verify with the city. I can't believe I've been spending two days on something like this when I could be taking pictures, uploading, editing or drawing, etc. :p heh. Hah, that's all I'll say about that >_> ~.....
- I know my English is bad >< (it's a fact ~_~ ), but I did type up a couple of templates for myself - more-or-less, for FoP requests. Here's for the first email:
- Dear (Mr./Mrs./Ms./Dr./Prof./etc.) (- - - -),
- In regards to Noos, the city of Lincoln owns the art work and all rights of use to the art work. Permission for use of an image of the art work can be obtained from the city's representatives. - I am an editor of Wikipedia (wikipedia.org), a multilingual project to create a complete, accurate, and open-content encyclopedia. Volunteers from around the world collaboratively edit Wikipedia, which is one of many projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation (wikimediafoundation.org). We depend on photographs to clearly illustrate our articles.
- I really like your beautiful sculptures named “(- - - )” here in Lincoln, Nebraska. I would like to use a photo of your sculptures to help illustrate the great, public art we have in Lincoln. Unfortunately the U.S. does not have a “freedom-of-panorama exception” law. Therefore, a U.S. federal court has ruled (the original ruling was eventually overturned) that any photo taken of a sculpture in a public space is derivative work and conflicts with the copyright of the sculptures being photoed.
- I would still like to use a photo of your work, but I can only do it if you are willing to grant permission for the photo to be used under terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA for short). This means that although you retain the copyright & authorship of your sculptures, you are granting permission for others to use, copy & share the photo of your sculptures freely and even potentially use them commercially, so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely (e.g., "share-alike"). You can read this license in full at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License . Please do note that the photo may not remain intact as submitted; this license, as well as the collaborative nature of Wikipedia, also entitles others to edit, alter and update them at will, i.e., to keep up with new information, or suit the photo to a different purpose. However, the license also expressly protects authors "from being considered responsible for modifications made by others."
- If you do agree to grant me/Wikipedia permission to use a photo of your sculptures, we will credit you, state the sculptures in the photograph is your work & is photographed with your permission and will provide a link to your website if needed.
- You are obviously an expert artist (I am an amateur -heh…). I hope you will consider accepting my request.
- Thank you much!
- Sincerely,

- The first needs a little editing to update the license. The second - which is sooooooo much more clunky >< :...
- Hi ( - - - )!
- After pulling together the next step for permission of use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia - I discovered that the Creative Commons license has been upgraded from version 3 to version 4.0 (the old Wikipedia guide is out of date ~o~ - seems like they upgrade them for the times throughout the years :p ~). I believe there really isn’t much of a difference, but if you wish to review it, it can be found here:
- (you can also choose a different license, too, if you want, which I believe can be found here: https://wiki.riteme.site/?title=Wikipedia:File_copyright_tags/Free_licenses )
- Anywho, if that looks all good, first please read this (this is generic and still has the 3.0 license on it >< !):
- (I’ll worry about the {{OTRS pending}} coding stuff - many of the things in the link above are below… but go with the above :p heh ^_~ ~)
- …and then if that looks good, please copy all of our previous correspondence including this email (since we reply back and forth, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem ;D ) and email it - preferably from an email address that allows Wikipedia to recognize you as the artist - to the address below:
- permissions-commons@wikimedia.org
- …with the subject line:

- …and here’s the form (please fill in your details inside the square brackets and delete the contents within the parentheses - please do not leave the square brackets and parenthesis in place):…

- Complete instructions here if needed (get ready for a headache like I had when I was reading it :p heh:)
- Wikipedia might ask you for identification if they are not totally 100% sure the can ID who you are in the email (anyone can send an email from any address, I suppose :o ~). A specific email address would be the best proof (but maybe there’s something else out there that I’m not aware of that could be used :o ???)…
- Anyways, so sorry this is so complicated :( (seems like that’s the world we live in now-a-days, unfortunately ~o~ ) but I think you so much for taking the time to do this ^_^ ! This will really help enrich peoples’ knowledge about the work we live in - not just in words but also visually :D . Wikipedia/Wikimedia would also like to thank you, too ^_^ !!!

Gmcbjames - Yeah, had a little burn-out there, so I took a day off :p . Got permission from another artist :) ... one tagged for deletion - so hopefully the email makes it to Wikimedia in time since someone has already put the OTRS code in there :( . Ah well, we'll see ^_~ .
I edited that permission form since it was so clunky :( . Seen here:
Hi ( - - - )!
If you want to skip all of the nitty gritty, there’s just a couple of steps to do with this permission form (this section is the simplified version). Wikipedia/Wikimedia asks that you please look at this link here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries
If that looks good, then please confirm that the photo will fall under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license by signing the permission form below (I’ve discovered that the license has been upgraded from version 3 to version 4, details below the asterisked permission form below). The license can be seen here: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

I thank you so much for taking the time to do this ^_^ ! This will really help enrich peoples’ knowledge about the work we live in - not just in words but also visually :D . Wikipedia/Wikimedia would also like to thank you, too ^_^ !!!

I’ve tried to pull all the information I could from Wikipedia regarding everything because I definitely think that you know everything. I’d trust what Wikipedia has more than what I have below since this is all new to me… but I’ve tried my best to collect all of the info - much of it was on multiple pages, especially since U.S. FoP is pretty… interesting :p heh. Anywho, I may repeat some of the stuff that I had above… and having so much to look at seems scary to me :o , but it’s all really not all that big of a deal - Wikipedia/media’s just coving all of their bases :p ^_~ . Again, thank you for taking the time to do this ^^ !…..
The nitty-gritty:
After pulling together the next step for permission of use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia - I discovered that the Creative Commons license has been upgraded from version 3 to version 4.0 (the old Wikipedia guide is out of date ~o~ - seems like they upgrade them for the times throughout the years :p ~). I believe there really isn’t much of a difference, but if you wish to review it, it can be found here: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
(you can also choose a different license, too, if you want, which I believe can be found here: https://wiki.riteme.site/?title=Wikipedia:File_copyright_tags/Free_licenses )
Anywho, if that looks all good, first please read this (this is generic and still has the 3.0 license on it >< !): https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries (I’ll worry about the {{OTRS pending}} coding stuff - many of the things in the link above are below… but go with the above :p heh ^_~ ~)
…and then if that looks good, please copy all of our previous correspondence including this email (since we reply back and forth, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem ;D ) and email it - preferably from an email address that allows Wikipedia to recognize you as the artist - to the address below:
permissions-commons@wikimedia.org
…with the subject line: ( - - - )
Also, if you would please, cc me at ( - - - ) when sending this email, so that I know that it’s been sent. I’ll do the coding on the Wikimedia end after the email is sent (the “dirty work” :p heh~) so that Wikipedia knows to expect an email form you.
Complete instructions here if needed (get ready for a headache like I had when I was reading it :p heh:) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS
Wikipedia might ask you for identification if they are not totally 100% sure the can ID who you are in the email (anyone can send an email from any address, I suppose :o ~). A specific email address would be the best proof (but maybe there’s something else out there that I’m not aware of that could be used :o ???)…
Anyways, so sorry this is so complicated :( (seems like that’s the world we live in now-a-days, unfortunately ~o~ ). Thank you (again :) ) and thank you also for your patience. If there are any problems, please let me know, ok :) ?

Discussion continued
They've been sent to the artists as of today... see what happens and will call another tomorrow to help remind :p .
I called an organization here in Lincoln who had to clue about the FoP ruling... they'll be checking up on it and in the mean time they referred me to the arts liaison for the Mayor. She's off until July 7th, so I'll have to wait for now :p heh.
Anywho, sorry to have sounded to stupid about the copyright stuff and all ~_~ . When you don't deal with it everyday, it ends up as new territory :p ~o~ (or you just forget it as I had :p ). Hope I haven't thrown you off here over the past few days... still get a little inkling that I have - so if I have, my apologies ~o~ .
For now... time to go outside and sweep the driveway :D hahah... hah... huh? Hum :p heh ^_~ ... and then a little break again for a little while - maybe until next week, then I'll go take some more photos :) . Oh, I still have more to upload @o@ ! Yikes :p hah ;) ~ Hanyou23 (talk) 20:49, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Oh, btw, is there a proper template for attribution :o ??? Hanyou23 (talk) 20:50, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, let me assure you that you do not sound stupid and you haven't thrown me off here. I believe you are in uncharted territory. I have tried to find answers on Commons, however have not found them. The only document is here.
- You are the owner and copyright owner of your own image - this is the permission needed - from you rather than the artist. However, since public art is in your copyrighted image, the question needing an answer to is what permission is required. I have not found this answer. All that may be needed is the artist to email you with their permission to include their work in your copyrighted image (which you sign off on for use on commons). However, I don't know. Again, the answer is not clear. My suggestion would to post on the help page of commons here.
- This may explain why any public art after 1978 is not in articles - it is too difficult to comply maybe? While Wikipedia has an an answer for everything (almost too much) Wikimedia has very little answers - though this may be because it is hamstrung due to various copyright laws. I am impressed you are following through here - beyond the call of duty! If you post on the Commons help page, let me know - this may be very helpful for you. I am grateful to have learned so much about freedom of panorama - and now understand why in articles public art after 1978 is missing. Have fun in the next week. Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 22:11, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- After spending some more time thinking and searching - I cannot find a template to use for permission granted from an artist of a public art work in your own image - I am getting the feeling maybe there isn't one because no one has pursued using public art made after 1978 in their image. This is perplexing - and if you find a answer do let me know. Cheers again Gmcbjames (talk) 00:25, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - thank for doing the looking ^^ ! I've been around the circles of help pages a few days prior ( XD ) and looking at the permission form, I think I might have found the way :o . Please see here :) :
- (please copy and paste the link above - it's being not smart again ~_~ ...)
- ...and voila, it worked :D (yay XD )!!! Now I just need to find some art on commons that have the attributes to copy (how they do it), then I think I'm set :) ! Two more should be on the way shortly (hopefully), am calling another one today, calling Sheldon tomorrow. If the rest are successful, maybe I'll create more a formal letter template for others to use, but I'd hate for artists to be bothered all the time about such things :o . Ah well, at least one down, more to go, huh :p ? Cheers ^^ ! Hanyou23 (talk) 18:29, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- Glad you have found a work around - it would be great if commons was clearer about how to obtain and note persmission of a public art work after 1978 in an authors own image. Great job ! 18:53, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Gmcbjames Thank for the kind words again ^_^ ! In all honesty, I'm not sure that they know all that well, either, because... well, looking at 21st century artists on Commons, there's hardly anything like you've said :o ! I've tried to attribute the work as best as I could - as how I think it would be. Would you mind please having a second look at that link above and please tell me what you think :) ? Thanks... again :D ! Hanyou23 (talk) 20:37, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hanyou23, I checked out the link above, and the solution you found using OTRS to document permission is a great way to do it - though I suspect most image contributors just let the image be deleted rather than all the work you have done. Again, great follow-through! The description is great - maybe change "public arts piece" to "city of Lincoln, Nebraska public art work" to reflect who owns the piece? You are so diligent! Cheers Gmcbjames (talk) 04:00, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Gmcbjames - ah, I think right after I get these few photos sorted out here, I'm going to take about a month off from Wikipedia, for a break ~o~ . I think you're right about the artists not replying back... I hoping they will, but we'll see :( . I'm not entirely sure what his intentions are (or were), but today I think I had one artist try to lay claim to the ownership of one of the photos I took ~o~ . I've inquired over on the OTRS message board on commons... we'll see how long it takes them to get back to me :p ... but for now, I'm a bit burned >< . Unfortunately I need some time off ~_~ . I might take a few photos throughout July... once again, we'll see ;p . Sorry to say this ~_~ . I'll still be around to hop on every now-and-again, though :) ... and I always get emails when tagged, so I know when to stop back :p heh. Anyways >_> .....
- Listening to "Knights in White Satin" right now by the Moody Blues - soothe the soul :p . Will draw a little before heading to be tonight... at least, planning on it :p . Plan on heading to Wilber tomorrow on my motorbike to check-up on my grandparents at the cemetery (that's such a strange way to say it >< ~). Summer school this week, the fourth around the corner, the wife clawing at getting rooms changed around >o< ... time never stops for a second, does it :p heheh ^_~ ???
