Merge

[edit]

Hello. Why don't you think Muslims in Fiji should be merged with Islam in Fiji? All other articles on the subject begin "Islam in..." Why should Fiji's article be any different? Biruitorul 17:27, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fiji

[edit]

Thanks for that info. I'll look into this a bit more. The problem with writing about emotionally charged topics (including ethnicity, language, religion, moral issues, etc.) in an NPOV-based encyclopedia is trying not to favour any one side. What to call Fiji Hindi/Fijian Hindustani/Urdu etc., whether Fiji Indians/Indo-Fijians, etc. are emotionally sensitive topics for Indians and Fijians alike, and I've heard inflamed debates from members of both communities on these issues. Wikipedia cannot say that any particular position is right or wrong; it can only state that the matter is controversial, and explain the respective positions, fairly and accurately. The de-facto wikipedia convention is to use the legal term, and if lacking, the most widely used term. Hindustani is the legal term for the language, according to Section 4 of the Fijian Constitution: "Section 4 Languages (1) The English, Fijian and Hindustani languages have equal status in the State." As for the term Indo-Fijian, that is, rightly or wrongly, the most widely used term in academic circles. But I agree that both issues, and other polarizing topics related to Fiji, need to be debated further. David Cannon 22:12, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain. I was under the misconception that Fiji Hindi was a dialect that differed only marginally from the Hindi/Urdu spoken on the subcontinent. I have (a) moved the article back to Fiji Hindi, and (b) expanded the article with information that you provided on my talk page.

One question: how is Fiji Hindi written? Does it use the Devanāgarī alphabet (used by Hindi) or the Persian alphabet (used by Urdu)? Thanks for uploading Image:Leonidas.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. South Indians in Fiji

I read it today and was astonished as to how well has it been written. Great job. I have been around Wikipedia for a while so if you need any help, let me know. Keep it upRaveenS 02:52, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I see you wrote the B.D. Lakshman article. Are Prince Gopal Lakshman and Chaitanya Lakshman descendants of his, by any chance? David Cannon 12:18, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info. I was told that Chaitanya Lakshman is Prince Gopal Lakshman's nephew, so he must be B.D. Lakshman's grandson. I thought Prince Gopal Lakshman must be a descendant of the rulers of one of India's "princely states", because I've come across other Lakshmans with "Prince" in their names too. Thanks for telling me it's not so - I'll correct the article accordingly. David Cannon 21:25, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Consistent format for Fiji elections

[edit]

Hi there! The correct format is Fiji election of 1972. The other format (Fiji election (1972) automatically redirects to it, but the former is the correct link. All Fiji election articles match that format. BTW, it's great to see all your new articles. Keep it up! David Cannon 03:01, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Organized labour

Hi Girmitya, I noticed the great work you are doing at Category:Trade unions of Fiji and I thought you might be interested in WikiProject Organized Labour. Have a look, there are a number of editors involved, and you might find some useful resources to help you with the articles you're working on. Cheers. --Bookandcoffee 17:36, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, if you're interested in joining the project that's great. Like most things here it's quite a loosely structured thing, just add your name to the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Organized Labour#Participants. (If you're a userbox kind of person you can add {{User OrgLabour}} to your user page.)

"Unofficial" members

[edit]

Hi there! Thank you for your work on Legislative Council and for creating the Executive Council article. Could you perhaps include some information in both articles about what is meant by "official" and "unofficial" members? Every book I've read bandies these words around, supposedly expecting everybody to know what they mean, but I'm confused. Were "unofficial" members persons who were allowed to sit in on the proceedings, but were not formal members? Or does it mean something else? If you could clear this mystery up, I'd be delighted. Thanks! David Cannon 23:03, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You undid my disambiguation link repair for the word Norwegian in the article Hereford (ship). Please don't do that again. If you don't understand what I'm doing, please ask on my talk page; if you disagree with my edit, feel free to replace it with a different one; but PLEASE do not re-establish the link to the disambiguation page. Wikilinks directly to disambiguation pages are considered undesirable because a link, in order to be useful, should take the reader directly to a relevant article. Thanks. --Tkynerd 21:32, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cut-and-paste moves (re: Allanshaw (ship))

[edit]

Hi there! Please avoid cut-and-paste moves (copying the text from the "old" article and pasting it into the renamed one), as that destroys the edit history. Instead, you can rename the page by clicking the "MOVE" tab at the top. If there is already an article there, you won't be able to move it, but you can ask any administrator (including me) to delete destination file for you and then merge the two versions. I've done that for the Allanshaw (ship) article. David Cannon 11:15, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:AmiChandra.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:AmiChandra.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 17:29, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:ManilalDoctor.jpg

[edit]
Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:ManilalDoctor.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

C.A Shah Deletion

[edit]

A tag has been placed on C.A. Shah, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. WazzaMan 13:56, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:BadriMaharaj.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BadriMaharaj.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:ManilalDoctor.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:ManilalDoctor.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 16:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article popped up in the middle of my working to remove links to the disambiguation page "BA". There's a link to "Ba" under "Branches" that gets redirected to that dab page. Since you just wrote the article, I thought you might have a better idea than I do of which "Ba" this means. Verbs in Fiji Hindi

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Verbs in Fiji Hindi, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Verbs in Fiji Hindi. Count of Indo-Fijians in the United Kingdom

Non-free rationale for File:ManilalDoctor.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:ManilalDoctor.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. The article Ujagar Singh has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced BLP

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Patchy1 00:51, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Ujagar Singh for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Ujagar Singh is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ujagar Singh until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
