Tourism in Gibraltar

Hey there - sorry I've been quiet for a bit, the result unfortunately of a hand injury. I'm back in action now though! You might be interested in my new draft article at User:Prioryman/Tourism in Gibraltar - any thoughts before I move it into article space? (Feel free to amend it if you wish.) Prioryman (talk) 00:55, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments and your good wishes! By the way - "direct root" - oh dear! I think the tourist board needs a spell checker. :-) Prioryman (talk) 11:35, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Albert Fava

Hola Gibmetal77, I assume you're familiar (somehow) with this Gibraltarian trade unionist. I've always wanted to know more about this guy, deported by the Governor on the grounds of being a dangerous Communist. Unfortunately I didn't find any further information (at least in an online way... none of my books say too much about Fava). To my surprise, I've just found this (it's surprising because one could expect to find more information from Gibraltarian or British sources). As I know you can perfectly speak and read Spanish, maybe you could try to write an article on Fava from the La Vanguardia article. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 09:49, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks so much for all your help with GibraltarpediA, without you it wouldn't have happened. Mrjohncummings (talk) 19:10, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I confess I did know that it was then the House of Assembly, really must pay more attention. The other problem with this page is that although I found sources giving the names of all the candidates and also the parties' shares of the votes, I couldn't find one which stated who was representing which party, so I had to work it out. I was left with some gaps. Can you please try to fill in the parties (if any) which Azopardi, C. J. Culatto and Ferro were standing for in 1992? Moonraker (talk) 13:01, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I suspect this lack of online sources stating the candidates' parties is the main reason why several elections haven't been begun yet. Moonraker (talk) 13:14, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

English/British/Anglo-Dutch Capture of Gibraltar

I apologise for editing the article incorrectly. I did see that the English and the Dutch had been fighting side by side but I had assumed that England took over the actual administration of the island, with the Dutch having only provided assistance. I did not know that they seem to have ruled the island together until the Dutch formally ceded it to Great Britain in 1713. I had considered writing "Anglo-Dutch forces" but I thought perhaps people would think that Anglo in that sense meant British, as it so often does.

I took an interest in that piece of history out of romantic notions; that the victory could represent one of the last great world-shaping victories of England before its efforts and ours were all wrapped up in Britishness. At least, that's why I took an interest in it. --Breatannach (talk) 23:28, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Ibex Cave

Hola Gibmetal, feliz año :-)

I've been reading said article and I found it really interesting. However, I noticed that it included a quite long quotation, something that, in my understanding, doesn't fully comply to our policies. I asked DarkWind (one of the copyright clerks in the project) and this is what he answered. Sorry for the inconvenience. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 11:47, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

A tool for locations

Hi Tyson, happy new year, I found this tool which you may find useful. The key to using it is that if you hold down control and click on the map then the full coords are available on the left. Thought you may find this useful - as you will see we now have a few more caves! Victuallers (talk) 12:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

History of Gibraltar

Hi Tyson, the first draft of History of Gibraltar is now pretty much done - it's currently just over 9,000 words. I will be going through it to polish it up and add extra references where necessary, but could you please (1) let me have some feedback and (2) add any links where you think they might be pertinent? I've got a GA reviewer lined up and I intend to submit it for GA next weekend, with a view to getting it to GA status by the end of this month and to get it through FAC by the end of March, in time for the 11 April tercentenary. Notification of discussion

As a member of the Gibraltarpedia project, you may be aware that there was a discussion a few months ago on Wikipedia talk:Did you know about Gibraltar-related DYKs on the Main Page. I am proposing that the temporary restrictions on such DYKs, which were imposed in September 2012, should be lifted and have set out a case for doing so at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Gibraltar-related DYKs. If you have a view on this, please comment at that page. Prioryman (talk) 22:15, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Nearby Gibraltar though

I would much prefer articles that are subjects that fall under Gibraltarpedia's mandate, but which aren't in Gibraltar. So Algeciras stuff or other places like that. Do you have a list for that or any article suggestions? SilverserenC 07:02, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Nomination of Carmen Media for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Carmen Media is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Carmen Media until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 00:05, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

straits tweak

I noticed in this edit that you changed a few uses of "straits" to "strait", including one inside a quotation.[2] Is this how the quotation appears in the original source, or was this perhaps an accident? No big deal either way, but thought I'd double-check as part of my review. Many thanks for your work on this one and other Gibraltar topics! This article's terrific, and is almost sure to end up a GA. -- Khazar2 (talk) 13:51, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Translation English to Spanish completed - need assistance to incorporate into Spanish Wikipedia

Good Greetings - I created the article Olav Zipser and have had the content professionally translated into Spanish. My challenge is that I personally do not speak Spanish and so incorporating the translated text into the Spanish Wikipedia is challenging. Please could I request you to assist with incorporating the translated text into the Spanish Wikipedia and making all of the relevant links etc... not sure how best to go about this so asking for assistance of active Wikipedians I can find who are listed on http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Translators_available#Spanish-to-English

On communication from you I can email you the word document of the translation which has been completed per section.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance Quadtripplea (talk) 14:47, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Good Morning. I took a long break from email, Ancestry, Find A Grave, and Wikipedia to play catch up with real life. Although my children are home this week for Spring Break, the local school still mandates that they attend water polo practices, games, and tournaments, so I get to continue to play chauffeur. I was pleased to see that the Gibraltarpedia initiative continues to be active. I wonder how long it will take to relearn how to navigate Wikipedia? Anne (talk) 14:55, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Re: El último de Gibraltar

You're welcome. The painting author, Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, is a hyperrealistic painter specialized in historical works. We've been so lucky as him uploading some images of his works (see, for instance this one on one of the cavalry charges during the retreats after the battle of Annual; this one on one of the heroines of the Peninsular War; or this one on the battle of Rocroi). I'll try to contact him to get further releases that could be helpful (mainly for episodes of the history of Spain). Un abrazo --Ecemaml (talk) 09:12, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: Gibraltarian media

Hi Gibmetal77 - yes, I did move the category. I thought hard about doing so, realising there was probably a strict definition to Gibraltarian. However, I decided to move the category for two reasons. First, all other media categories for territories and countries use "Fooian" - this might still not have been enough on its own to sway me unless I was sure that all the iterms in the category would qualify by some rule as Gibraltarian. But then I noticed that the category was a subcategory of Category:Gibraltarian culture. As such, it seemed reasonable to assume that if the correct term is Gibraltarian for culture, then the media that is part of that culture must also be Gibraltarian. I hope this hasn't caused any problems for WP's Rock editors - if it has, then I've no objection to it being moved back. Grutness...wha? 10:36, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: Hi

Hi Gib!

I did not stop writing, only have slowed down and started to do more articles in English about «Brazilian personalities» (some are shy and don't like public exposure at Wikipedia ;). I had made a promise that would document all the current Gibraltar Parliament and I plan on keeping my word (say, by the end of this year). But I also hope that you can convince your friends to send me at least one of those shirts commemorating the Gibraltarpedia :)

Gibraltar roads

Ive been working through Discover Gibraltar to see what we've missed. The biggest subject is diving and Great North Road. I'm having a go at "Underwater Gibraltar".... oh and Ive added the missing ref. Victuallers (talk) 19:15, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

I've started List of shipwrecks of Gibraltar using the discovery website. Obviously I couldn't get exact decimal point accuracy with the coordinates as they're marked as blobs but I lined 'em up on different browsers with their map and flashearth and my coordinates at most would be metres out, very close I think. Not sure of the folks in Gibraltar have a list of the coordinates locations to the nearest cm! There are some others I missed out which weren't named or weren't ships and there's some existing articles not covered, feel free to add. Although you might find more about the entries given, some might be worth their own articles. Maybe a table would be better, maybe not,up to you and Victor.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 20:11, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Tunnels

I'll probably end up doing a separate article on the tunnels, as I have a lot of material on that, but I was wondering what the status is of most of the WW2 tunnels - that is to say, other than the ones you can see at the WW2 tunnels visitor attraction on the Upper Rock. I believe the MOD only handed them back to the GoG a few years ago. Do you know if anyone is allowed to visit them?

Also, do you know if the MOD still controls any of the batteries? I recall seeing a couple of "MOD property" notices during my walk along the Upper Rock but I don't know if they were leftovers or reflect current statuses. Prioryman (talk) 21:35, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Prioryman, I think it varies from tunnel to tunnel. Some of the road tunnels like Williams Way, Gibraltar have cars going through them, others like Admiralty Tunnel have businesses inside of them. A guy called Pete Jackson can arrange tours. John and I were both taken down the Great North Road, Gibraltar which is a dual lane sized tunnel where two lorries could pass each other inside the rock but its currently closed to the casual tourist. Others hold drinking water and would therefore be protected. Other tunnel systems are available but not advertised as they also contain or provide access to archaeology. I'm sure Ty can give a fuller picture. Victuallers (talk) 14:05, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Roger, I'd already replied on Chris' talk page. I'm guessing you mean Dudley Ward Way which is the east side road that links Sandy Bay to Europa Point. William's Way is out of bounds but I'm unsure whether it's still MoD or was already transferred to government. --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 08:13, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
