Some while ago (last September, actually) you added the above image to A Handful of Dust, as a more appropriate example of Gothic Revival architecture than the Lancing College Chapel. At the time I agreed; subsequently (I move slowly in such matters) I've become less certain. Ashridge House was built in what Waugh approvingly calls the "pre-Ruskin" phase of the Gothic revival, but the fictional Hetton was built much later, in "the worst possible 1860 style", and is stated as being "devoid of interest". So, quite unlike Ashridge. I'm rather inclined, regretfully, to delete the Ashridge image, but as a courtesy I thought I'd consult you first. Brianboulton (talk) 19:23, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

When I read the book, I somehow had the impression that the house was seriously massive; much larger than either Oakley of Ettington, that's why I went for Ashridge. Carlton Towers is closer to my impression, and also has the clock tower which ensured that guests never slept. Thoresby Hall, to my mind, also has all the requirements. I can imagine Waugh's lip curling at "it now includes a golf club and it served as the judge's house for Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh on The X Factor". All architecture has something pleasing about it Iridescent; sometimes one just has to look a little harder to find it. Adare looks to have some very nice Gothic features there and some tricky bits of structural design - whoever designed it knew what they were doing. I think it's quite accomplished. Philip Hepworth

You will never believe who took this photograph!

Hi Giano. An article I wrote today is about an architect and I though you would be a good person to ask for advice. Would you have time to have a look and see what you think? The article is Philip Hepworth. If you like solving mysteries, there is also the following: (i) which birth year is correct? and (ii) did he work on Trowbridge Town Hall? The de-wiki article claims this, but I think it is wrong and sources are confusing this with the (Wiltshire) County Town Hall (in Trowbridge). I am tempted to go and photograph the Lloyds Bank in Southwark as an example of his work, but that might be going too far... Hope you are having a ball. I just got back from the North of Highlands Campground on Cape Cod. Lovely place. We managed to secure a beach fire permit for August 12, the peak night of the Persid Meteor Shower. It was very ideal to look northeast from the beach. The meteors were coming from a point in the sky about 30 degrees above the horizon (at 11pm), about one per minute. Quite impressive. Jehochman ^Talk 14:32, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Dyrham Park

Hi, I'm just expanding (and providing some references to) a largely unreferenced article on Dyrham Park. If you had any interest or sources and could help with the architectural description that would be great. Thank you Rod, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but I am now returnedinng for a few days. I do know Dyrham and visited it last year under its scaffolding - fascinating place. I have the NT guide book and one or two other books which may be of uses. Tell me what wants referencing and I'll try to find one. Will take a look later when I have dealt with all the ridiculous rubbish going on below. Thanks - no rush. I'm having problems getting my head around (and therefore explaining in the article) the development from the old tudor house to adding the west & east ranges at different periods. Since I wrote this I've acquired a copy of the NT handbook which is basically a walk though the rooms and their decorations, but does have a nice cutaway diagram at the front. I've declined this proposed deletion as no matter what the source or author was, an 1880 photograph will be public domain. The photographer is clearly stated to be "Name unknown" and {{PD-US-unpublished}} applies, so please strike that garbage above. Olga is now suitably attired in a FUR, so she is safe to appear publicly in polite society (i.e mainspace) but with her stylish new FUR one never knows whether or not she'll be asked to vacate play space (ie. sandboxes). I'd be very surprised that image wasn't published before 1923 but until we can find a copy of it in a newspaper or other publication this will have to do. I seem to recall I took a photo of my bookshelf just to illustrate some guideline page about reliable sources (the idea being that paper-based sources are often orders of magnitude better than online ones) and in about ten minutes somebody nominated it for deletion because of a couple of insignificantly small photos that happened to be on one the spines. I have always had my doubts about these so called "compromised" accounts as in my experience those caught in "compromising" situations are generally having a high old time and enjoying their compromisation. Or in Wikipedian situations are merely people who have just got plain drunk or had to be carted off to the loony bin, as I am neither, and my compromisations just seem to be an odd random revert, I should think it's just a glitch in the system, which, by comparison, is very dull indeed. Of course you weren't, but were you using one of those jump-about-y handheld devices? It's common that people revert the wrong thing on those. Reverting something above or below the edit you intended on your watchlist used to be known as "fat-finger syndrome", but on touch-screens I do believe you don't even need to misclick or click fatly at all — the interface is liable to give itself a shake as you click, and you won't see it happen. I recommend always looking at your edits after you make them, to make sure your phone or whatever didn't make a different one instead. (I've stopped using my IPad for Wikipedia. Too bloody fiddly.) There is a line of code you can add to your common.js file that removes the "rollback" link from your watchlist. It may be more useful just to require confirmation before carrying out the rollback. Any of the three scripts mentioned at Wikipedia:Rollback #User scripts would do the job, but the last one only works on the watchlist, so is the most specific. Keep a few things in mind: (a) I have the admin bit, so I can access your monobook.js page, but that does not mean I am competent or understand how all this stuff works. (c) Apparently you'll need to do one of the following to "bypass your browser's cache" (don't ask me): "Internet Explorer: hold down the Ctrl key and click the Refresh or Reload button. Firefox: hold down the Shift key while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R). Google Chrome and Safari users can just click the Reload button." It works fine for me using what you see in [[User:RexxS/monobook.js]. I am wondering if that nice little Mr Wales does something similar on his talk page, but then he's not as rich as Mr Zuckerberg, or me or Mr Trump come to that. Not that I am coming to Mr Trump, I declined my invitation to sit in the pouring rain yesterday. What a circus that was, totally ridiculous with all the money the USA squanders (usually poking its nose where it's not wanted) around the world, one would think they could afford to have some sort of town hall with a roof on it to crown their presidents. I can't understand why they voted for him - really I can't. My Polish butler (who is very well informed) tells me it was the Russians who voted for him, but then why isn't he president of Russia then, instead of that funny little Mr Putin? If being phenomenally rich is qualification for the job, they would have been better off with me - at least I know how to tastefully decorate a drawing room. What a very interesting question; oddly enough the answer is: No I didn't. But strangely enough while I was en uteri the entire nursery wing at Scrotum Towers was demolished and rebuilt some 500 metres from my dear mother's apartment, this was on account of her having a quite natural aversion to small children. It was only after the birth of my of my sixth sister that she discovered the cause, which is why Sardines as a parlour game fell from favour. Personally, I've always preferred Bridge as an after dinner divertimento. Naturally, I can't speak for Mr Trump (yet) but I am having him to dine at Scrotum Towers with a view to turning its dull Capability Brown landscape turned into a golf course. Anyway, how can ashes "rest" even if they wanted to - even the most twee Christian would realise that ashes are not going to be restored to good health after a couple of week's "rest."
