Belated reply RE: AE

Hey. Thanks for reaching out (here). Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you (been mostly away for the last few months). In answer to your query: from my perspective, I think one of the greatest challenges WP:AE faces is getting participants to stick to its rules. Many users, including topic area veterans, disregard sticking to their own sections, disregard its word/diff limits (whether outright or through collapsed comments that render discussions visually jarring). These excesses serve to defeat AE's benefits over AN/ANI's word-limitless, threaded discussion format.

But this is a perennial problem that I don't really know how to solve. Because the rules are at the top of the page (some even in bold), so they can't really be any top'pper than top'ppest. Often I find that instead of reviewing material, as I'm expected to do, I spend my time getting participants to make the necessary corrections. Which usually needs to happen fast, because once one user, say, exceeds the word/diff limit several fold, then another might reply in turn, several fold. Doesn't help that some AE admins just accept these violations without trying to enforce the rules.

Again, I wish I knew what to do about that. I'm open to creative ideas. Best regards, El_C 20:43, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Wonder if it would be valuable to have the clerks patrol AE just to watch for basic rules failures. Izno (talk) 01:05, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
I think this might have been proposed before, but I'm not sure there are enough clerks to reliably handle the noticeboard's sometimes high level of activity. Wouldn't hurt to try, though. El_C 09:46, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

Perhaps you wouldn't mind striking "lynch mob"? It's not a very tasteful comparison (as I know from personal experience), and your argument holds up just as well without it. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 19:04, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
