CMT's logo[edit]

Do you by any chance know the exact date when CMT updated its logo? I've done a lot of research and discovered that is was between February 2 and August 30 of 2004. Please reply when you recieve this.71.63.42.172 (talk) 20:48, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The logo was changed several times. The logo at the launch, March 5, 1983 was both the full "Country Music Television" logo (the full name of the network) and the abbreviated "call letters," originally "CMTV." After MTV Networks sued for copyright infringement on the abbreviation (a suit settled out of court a year later by Country Music Television, Inc. voluntarily agreeing to drop the last letter), the "V" was dropped and only the full name logo was used until the summer of 1984. That's when the first "CMT" children's blocks (as I call it) came into use. When the Nashville Network (now "Spike TV") finalized its purchase of CMT in 1991, they cleaned up the logo but still kept the colored blocks. The logo was again changed about the time you cited, I believe in 2004 when CBS bought TNN and CMT, then a few months later CBS was acquired by Viacom, changing the logo to the Western style font in use today. Ironically, an original "western style" font was proposed for CMTV and was in fact used for the copyright filing. So, long story short, the 1983 dual logos (you can see both on www.cmtcountry.com) gave way to the simplified "children's blocks" logo in 1994, then the cleaned up version (seen on Wikipedia" premiered in 1991, finally giving way to the current "western logo" around 2004. That's great, and your contributions are welcome, but only if they are backed up by reliable sources. I'm sure that after reading that page you'll understand why we can't just take the word of any editor that shows up and says "I was there" when that kind of statement is unverifiable. See www.cmtcountry.com for original logos and biographical information. I was co-founder and first production director. Reliable sources include corporation papers, contracts with the record companies and artists and the entire first year of CMT programming, currently being transferred to digital formats.
