Gary Fong article

Writing about yourself

Please read the guidelines on autobiographies. Writing about yourself, and things you've done is not a good idea, and you should avoid it as much as you can, as it forms a huge conflict of interest. Thanks! --Lijnema 19:19, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK I edited and then I'm going to leave it alone. Let me know how this latest change looks to you - the other guy asked me to put in my photographic inspirations and influences. Well, not too sure about it, the problem is still verifyability. You saying it is not an acceptable source really, Wikipedia is a tertiary source, which means everything in Wikipedia must be backed up by secondary sources, that might be an interview with you, or an article or similar. You saying it's so isn't enough, I fear. However, I'm sure someone else will come along and fix things up, I don't think you need to worry too much about it ;) --Lijnema 19:30, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is open, but people should refrain from editing articles in which they have a conflict of interest. However, as a practical matter, if edits are properly sourced with citations and are written according to strict neutral point of view, then edits will be accepted. The Wikipedia:No original research policy means that an edit based on "I know Gary" will not work.

One thing that you can do to help yourself is to release a picture of yourself into the public domain or Creative Commons or GFDL licensing. One of the things that Wikipedia needs right now is a lot more photos of people which can be used freely according to Wikipedia policy, which requires relatively open licensing (but not necessarily public domain). Wikipedia is getting stricter about Fair Use. If you have portraits of people that you own the copyright to, you could upload them and then place them in articles, with a discreet credit containing a link to your article. I don't think you need a model release, since this is educational use, not commercial promotion or advertising, but you might investigate the whole Wikipedia licensing issue and see if you could help out. It could use some input from photographers knowledgeable about the issues (legal and practical). Also, perhaps some of your photographer friends could help out in the same ways.
