Happy New Year!

[edit]

Hi Ragib, wish you a Happy New Year '06 =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:22, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies

[edit]

I'm still new at this and seeing that i'm a martial arts aficionado i tried to get too many articles in and maybe copy and paste a bit. Will check on it in future.Freedom skies 18:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's ok, just try to reword, rewrite content rather than copypasting. Thanks. --Ragib 18:06, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aladin

[edit]

Hi Ragib, thank you for your engaged discussion about Aladin. If you change your mind about this subject matter, and you may at any time of course, I'd be very glad to see it inside the discussion. All the best, Peter S. 00:28, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sylhet

[edit]

Hi, the article on Sylhet is perhaps in need of some expert attention: the article should concentrate on Sylhet city, but in fact it launches immediately into the discussion of Sylhet district (later to become the Sylhet division). Perhaps this information can be merged somehow into the Sylhet Division or Sylhet District articles. Expert help appreciated, cheers, 131.111.8.100 02:30, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Genius Home Collegiate School

[edit]

Hey. Can you verify this school exists? If it does exist, can you provide a source that we can use (print, or a picture of the school) to verify it's existance? Thanks! Hipocrite - «Talk» 17:40, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, other than the website, I can't provide any verification for the existence of the school. As I mentioned in the AfD, the school is not notable enough to be referenced in media, or any other sources. Thanks. --Ragib 18:14, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, you are quite correct. I jumped to the mistaken assumption it was a wikimirror, because I've seen so many, that looked just like it. But, Wikipedia is the one who did the copying. So, we'll now have to delete it. I apologize for my mistake. --Rob 08:13, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's alright, there are too many wikimirrors out there. Also, there are many mirrors of Banglapedia as well. Search.com.bd is most likely a mirror of the main site www.banglapedia.org . Anyway, I would try to create a non-copyvio page on the school, which you can see from the newspaper article, is quite a good one in Bangladesh (among the top 10 in Dhaka Education Board (220,000 examinees). --Ragib 08:32, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Russell Berkley PhD/Temp

[edit]

Why have you created a temporary article on WP? If you intend this to be permanent, use the sandbox to work on it before publishing it in full. The notability of the subject also needs to be stated. -- (aeropagitica)  22:41, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The temp page is created as per the WP:CP guidelines. This temp page is to serve as a non-copyvio version until the original copyvio issue is resolved. You should consult the guidelines which recommends creating the temp page. Thanks. --Ragib 22:50, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Bangladesh

[edit]

I think an explaination is in order from you for removing the map from the main article without providing reasons. I believe you have seen the maps closely enough to appreciate that the one that you removed is of better quality and clarity with detailed rail and road links. --ΜιĿːtalk 11:31, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, (Dr.) Rajib, have updated the map as per your requirements (Do refresh your browser). Cheers. ΜιĿːtalk 11:10, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review

[edit]

hi ragib, i have nominated Wikipedia:Peer review/Kargil War/archive1 for a review. Of course this could be a sensitive article but I'm trying to present a factual and neutral version of the war backed with sources. Admittedly it is also shorter than what you'd expect of a FA candidate but the war itself was pretty short. I request you help in improving the article from any angle seen fit. I'm requesting others with similar interests in military/history to do the same to guide the editors in improving it to FA status if possible. Tx and cheers. Afd vs talk page

[edit]

I'm curious about your using Afd for Aladin. Do you think Afd discussions work better than hashing things out on the talk page? I've had pretty much the opposite experience. Friday (talk) 01:11, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe in due process. I have no problem in making it into a redirect, but I believe that the blanking of the contents of an article should be done via due process, i.e. an AfD. Someone unilaterally made the article into a redirect, blanking the few lines still there. My stand is that, it should not be left to an editor's personal whim to decide when to blank an article into a redirect. Thanks. --Ragib 01:14, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help: God is writing his own write-ups

[edit]

Hi; you wrote my Welcome note when I started editing, so that's why I'm posting here.

I've come across some controversial or questionable edits by one Geir Smith User:Geir Smith. These appeared on an article on Shentong which I authored, which now references an article "dedicated" to Jolpa. I don't think Wikicles should be dedicated at all. Investigation shows that Geir Smith has a God complex (or at least is a kook): http://geirsmith.org/. I don't think he should be either editing or authoring Wikicles at all. Is there any principle banning kooks from editing a priori? Or do we have to appoint ourselves as kook-watchers, and run around behind them?

Does this article Phende have any merits? If I delete it, what's to stop it just reappearing?

Do I need to get some kind of expert consensus that Geir Smith is a nut, or is it obvious to anyone who inquires?

Hello

[edit]

Talking to you after a long gap. Please see my comments on the talk page of Padma. I am waiting for your suggestion. Thanks. --Bhadani 13:59, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ragib, I request your assistance on this article, which is undergoing a peer review presently. Your help will be very appreciated. Although a lot of work has been put into making sure everything is factual and NPOV, we need aid of a respected non-Indian to make sure that its not an Indo-centric article in terms of attitude. Even though most editors including Bhadani, Deeptrivia and Gurubrahma feel its fine NPOV-wise, Gurubrahma recommended I seek your counsel.

If convenient, please read the article, particularly section "Conflicting Agendas". It is all properly referenced, but we wanna make sure we aren't making any inadvertant errors by excluding alternate points of view. Our main aim is to make this article an FA. Its no problem if you can't spend much time, but we'd welcome any advice you can give us.

Thanks! Rama's Arrow 03:45, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here are my comments:

  1. Razakar: at least 1 more line needs to be there. The article Razakar mostly refers to the Razakar militia in East Pakistan, with only a trailing sentence talking about Hyderabad razakars.
  2. The territorial extent of modern India is only superseded by that of the Mauryan Empire of Emperor Ashoka and under British Raj. - any reference backing this sentence should be given. This type of size comparisons should always be referenced.
  3. The intro sentence is quite long and very complex. Splitting it into two is recommended.
  4. (Rajmohan Gandhi, Patel: A Life, pp. 413-14)., this should be properly referenced (using mn and mnb).
  5. To this day, Pakistan maintains a claim on Junagadh, which is published in the official map by the Geological Survey of Pakistan., a link to a map from the agency's website would really help.
  6. Too little is written about Goa. The annexation of Goa deserves more than 1 sentence, and links to the particular article. This is because Goa's integration into India is so much different from the other states and regions.

Thanks. --Ragib 06:54, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Ragib. I really appreciate your help. Rama's Arrow 16:59, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganges Delta

[edit]

I urge you to read more about natural subsidence especially common in deltaic regions of continental margins. In the Ganges, natural subsidence through sediment compaction and normal faulting accounts for most of the sea level change. Also, the term global warming is now considered out of date for a variety of reasons. Most people now use the term climate change. --Eft 05:02, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fact, global warming is increasing sea levels. Fact, most of Bangladesh's coastal areas are only a few feet higher than sea level. The term may be "climate change", but whatever the term is, Bangladesh faces submersion due to the rising sea levels. So, I'm backing my stand. Thanks. --Ragib 05:47, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As a person with an advanced degree in science, let me help you seperate fact from theory. Global warming is a misnomer; overall global warming will result in significant cooling in some parts of the world (for instance the eastern seaboard of North America because of an enhanced Labrador Current). This is why we prefer to use the term climate change. An overall global warming will likely increase sea levels (I agree that this is close to being a fact, but with many things there are sometimes exceptions), but in the article the warming was linked to anthropogenic causes, which is a highly contentious issue and far from being fact. Every year there are big conferences on the issue and many of the attendees will agree that we are far from understanding the reasons for global climate change. If you read through the climate change articles and discussions on wikipedia, you will find a lot of great info on the matter. --Eft 16:20, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for the star

[edit]

It was a pleasant surprise to find that you'd quietly placed a barnstar of National merit in my userpage. :-) I'll continue to add more info on Bangladesh and India when possible. Thanks a lot. Idleguy 06:18, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ragib!

You have deleted my link in Pakistan Tourism section considering it as spam That was not right as Our site http://www.travel-culture.com has the most origanal and detailed content on tourism in Pakistan. travel.web.pk had actually coppied many articles from us. I am not adding the link again. I would request you to please have a look at the site and kindly put our link on the site. I didnt dare delete travel.web.pk either I dont think it is just.

Jamal

Dear Jamal, thanks for your message. Unfortunately, the site in question is a travel/tour agency site, selling tourist packages. True, it may have good content, but the main purpose of the site is commercial. Wikipedia is NOT a collection of links, or directory of websites. So, unfortunately, I removed the link. I will also remove other such commercial links, as those are neither relevant, nor essential for an encyclopedia article. I hope you understand my position. Thanks. --Ragib 07:16, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Salam! I still think those links are important as people need to know where to go if they decide to go to Pakistan All countries have travel links http://www.travel-culture.com/pakistan is less commercial It has information about all main cities of Pakistan. Many sites have copied even my misspellings in the articles I have also added a lot of content from my site to wikipedia.

I would be greatful if you could add my link it helps me get more people - Jamal

Sorry to disappoint you. Wikipedia is not a link firm, or a way to bring more people to your site. You might have noticed that I have removed the other travel agency site links from the article too. The main country level articles should not contain such links. It is not correct that other country articles have them ... take a look at India, which is a featured article, and has no commercial links. An encyclopedia can't have such links. Thanks. --Ragib 08:47, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand!

If you do so, would you please stop adding back the link to other articles? The link will always be removed. Frankly, wikipedia is not a tool for bringing more people to your site, try search engine optimization techniques with Google. If you continue adding the link, you might even be blocked from editing. Thanks. --Ragib 08:47, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You removed link from the page Mirpurkhas which is written by me and I think you cant just remove links or content from pages which are not written by you.

In Pakistan section too i do not agree with you but i accepted you point as a good gesture.

The other article from where you mercilessly removed the link was 100% written by me you can do that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamalpanhwar (talkcontribs)

You are mistaken. Anyone can edit anything. When you contribute something, you do it under the license known as GFDL. Anyone can mercilessly edit your text. Spamming is not a good thing. I've kept the Pakistan article and others as much free from spam as I can. If you continue spamming articles with your travel agency link, those links will be removed, and you may be banned from editing. Please don't continue promoting your site. Thanks. --Ragib 16:33, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Question

[edit]

Since you have already warned User:Peter S. for accusing everyone that votes against him, to be a sockpuppet, I wonder if you could offer me some advice. I'm currently being accused by him and to be honest I really don't like the fact that he is accusing me without any evidence. I've tried talking to him on his talk page, and he just replies with a pity remark. If you look at my edit history it is clear that I do contribute actively to wikipedia and this account wasn't just created to comment in his AfD.

I'm now in a rather silly position where I feel I have to "clear my name" even though I haven't done anything wrong. Aleast last time I checked not agreeing with someone wasn't breaking the rules.

I was just wondering where do I go from here, do I just let him spread his lies or is there something I can do? Grandwazir 03:39, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(Edit conflict) Hmm, it appears that I DID leave signatures according to this. :) --Ragib 03:54, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Anonymous editor says he removed them because the guy was using the links to your User page to make vandalistic edits to your User page. He's now complaining on the en-mailing list that you banned him for pro-Pakistan bias. Nonsense, of course. User:Zoe|(talk) 03:49, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh, the things I get from such vandals. According to them, I'm pro-Indian, Anti-Indian, Pro-Pakistani, Anti-Pakistani, Anti-Rohingya, Anti-Hinduism, and so on. Anyway, for reference, the following are the diffs that led to Cutejoe (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)'s ban: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], and [7]. I believe the diffs speak for themselves. Thanks a lot. --Ragib 03:54, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sure, I read all of those and totally agree with the block. User:Zoe|(talk) 05:03, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Meet Bangladesh

[edit]

i'm sorry but how was "meet bangladesh" a link spam? can you explain please? you have mybangladesh.net listed there as a resource where they have advertisement as main content of the site instead of the statistical data where as the link i added has over 150 pages of information about bangladesh starting from king ashok. did you even take your time to see what was in there? --DSayeed 11:04, 25 January 2006 (EST)

Yes, I did. Most of your information is copied off Microsoft Encarta (You do acknowledge that, but did you really get permission to do so? I doubt that Microsoft is giving out their content!!!). By the way, thanks for pointing out the Mybangladesh.net link. I've removed that as well. --Ragib 04:21, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the information (over 140 pages) is from U.S. Library of Congress, which, as a U.S. government website does not have copyrights. Some of the biographies were published with permission (where possible). Pictures were added to almost all the articles to make them lively instead of plain text. And texts for cities and/or rivers (with some maps) and quick facts (32 out of 182 pages) were used from ms encarta as a reference and keeping the Fair Use Act in mind. If you still say that is link spam then I got nothing else to say. --DSayeed 11:45, 25 January 2006 (EST)
By the way, talking about link spam, have you checked out some other categories related to Bangladesh? for example, Music of Bangladesh? There are links to forums, portals and illegal mp3 download sites in that section listed as External Resources. --DSayeed 11:58, 25 January 2006 (EST)

Where in Bangla (sic) do you live?

[edit]

(This is in response to the comemnt-less heading posted by Pizzadeliveryboy (talk · contribs)

Bangla is an ancient region. The area has always been known as Bangla. I am not sure whether or not you have seen Bangla dramas, but a very famous quote from "Siraj-ud-dowla" (drama and movies) is "Bangla, Bihar, Urissar mohan odhipoti ....".

FYI, Bangla refers to the combined region, formed by West Bengal ("Poshchim Bongo") and Bangladesh/East Bengal ("Purbo Bangla").

I can also point out various forms of cultural references to the term "Bangla" being used for the whole region, both historic, and contemporary, if you want. Thanks. --Ragib 19:47, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S., oh I forgot our national anthem .. Amar Shonar Bangla by Tagore ... :) --Ragib 19:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi Ragib, this is Mercenary2k.

I started working on the Pakistan Army page after I saw the Indian Army page and saw how much more comprehensive it was, so I got jealous ;) and wanted to improve the Pakistan Army page.

Anyways, I worked on it for a couple of days and greatly enhanced it.

I moved the entire history section to another page because the article was just getting to be way to long.

I used the Israel Defense Force and Indian Army as a template to build this page. On the IDF page, there is no summary of the History Section so thats why I didn't write one.

I will write a summary of Pakistan Army history as well as get the images clarified.

I am new to wikipedia.

Thankx for your feedback

Image Tagging Image:Azam khan.jpg

[edit]
Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Azam khan.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
