Community Oncology Programs in Bihar
[edit]In the early age he has seen many patients dying without taking any treatment, since there was no infrastructure & facilities in the state for providing the cancer treatment. The patient who can afford to go outside, left Bihar for the treatment otherwise maximum patient died without any treatment. When he was in Tata Memorial Hospital, he saw the pitiable condition of the patient coming from the Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Assam. He started thinking to start a comprehensive cancer centre in Bihar so that, patient need not to go outside for their treatment. With the intent, he was the key person to develop the largest comprehensive and charitable cancer centre with the name of Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Patna.
As a Cancer Specialist, he is now the moving spirit behind not only the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan but also, the campaign against the dreaded disease in Bihar and entire eastern region. Dr. Singh has been playing a pioneering role in teaching and research in the field of cancer. By dint of his untiring efforts and managerial skill Dr. Singh has made not only the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan a unique cancer hospital and research centre in Bihar and Jharkhand but also in whole country. Now, the people suffering from this dreaded disease are not required to move outside for quality and accurate treatment. Rather, Dr. Singh’s efforts have made cancer treatment less costly and affordable even for the poor.He is the main person for campaigning about the cancer awareness, education & Tobacco Cessation Programme in Eastern India. He put all his forces behind bringing all the different associations of various disciplines in the Cancer Management on one platform, which was very much needed in this country for the last 3-4 decade from better management of cancer. Now, this hospital is getting the 2nd highest number of patients after TMH, Mumbai for getting treatment in the institute. He always believes giving quality treatment at affordable cost. As a cancer doctor, he observed that maximum number of patients are turning up for their treatment in advanced stage of the disease and this is because of lack of awareness and education for this disease.
His efforts in Preventive Oncology and “Economizing Cancer Care in India” has also been highly appreciated throughout the country. He developed community oncology programme & throughout the year this department is very much active in doing various activities, regular health camps targeting school & college students. The community oncology department under his care has been doing lots of activities throughout the year. He has also started “Tobacco Mukti Mission” for controlling tobacco consumption in the country. In the mission of providing training to the doctors of periphery and NGO’s along with society, he is putting lots of efforts in this area. He is one person who believes that cancer scenario can be changed in this country not by the treatment only, but awareness and education has a great role to play.
