There is no templated called {{rename}}. You would tag the talk page with {{moveto}} just like an article. What is the issue with the name? I had some ideas on merging those templates like we did with {{Scout continent}}. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:35, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
I undid your renames since the redlink will show in articles. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:36, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
I merged all of those templates into {{WOSM}} with a switch for each region. IF this looks OK, I can use AWB to update the articles.
Great idea, like the toggle, that will save a lot of new documentation when something changes, can we do the same for WAGGGS? Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:24, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, will do WAGGS in a bit and then update the articles in one swoop. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:30, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
As to {{EurScout}}, I would suggest "WOSM Eurasian Region sidebar". Gotta run out for a bit. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:36, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
{{WAGGGS}} is done.

BSA Policies

Some issues..... Almost everyone in BSA seems willing to admit that there are atheists in the organisation. If the policies on religion are clear, how can that be?

The gay issue is totally confused by the ongoing use of the term "morally straight". Can you tell me what everyone in BSA thinks that means? Does it mean "not gay", or not?

The statement which I described in the Discussion as obfuscation is exactly that. Deliberately unclear.

If you want to convince me the policies are clear, in responding to these comments of mine, you need to be 100% exact and precise. Otherwise, it's unclear. HiLo48 (talk) 00:01, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

In what organization, esp one of BSA's size, will 'everyone' agree on something, much less one this controversial? Sounds to me like a loaded question where you're looking for a certain answer.RlevseTalk 01:06, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Endashes in lists

I noticed you edited Wikipedia:Editnotice to change things like this:

Page notices – Displays only on the page it belongs to.

To this:

Page notices– Displays only on the page it belongs to.

Why did you do that? I find your new way less readable. (As far as I can see the Manual of Style puts spaces both before and after the endashes. Although MoS is at most only advisory in non-article space.)

--David Göthberg (talk) 06:14, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

I reverted that change. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:14, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Template:EurScout

Someone wants to put this one up for deletion. Please weigh in. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:44, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

As we discussed before, {{EurScout}} is redundant with {{WOSM|eurasian}}, but I did not push the issue at the time. I told you a few days ago that if you wanted it moved, let me know and I would take care of it. Now you requested a move, it attracted attention and you are getting confrontational on the talk page. What am I supposed to do? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:56, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

You told me that the WOSM regional ones were redundant, I said run with it. This is not one of those. You said "As to {{EurScout}}, I would suggest "WOSM Eurasian Region sidebar". Gotta run out for a bit." so I changed the name. Where did you say you would take care of it? I can't find that. If you did tell me and I missed it, I am sorry. It's a first for me-I thought you were telling me a better name only, and it was one I liked better and agreed with. I requested the move before you suggested the better name. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:01, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I am bitey, when I perceive the other user is, but I try not to be with you. I respect the work you do even when we are not in agreement. I seriously have nothing that says you said you'd get this one. Hope you have a good day, I am going to bed. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:17, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Okay, just thought of this. I know the big thing now is to merge edit histories when two similar contributions exist. Do you know how to do that? I'll explain if you can. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:27, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Is it the Tenderfoot badge for all BPSA or just some associations? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:09, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Nice to see you! (I updated the Commons stuff) It is the common badge for all BPSA, being smaller and more closely aligned than WOSM. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:28, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

My apologies for any inappropriate comments made earlier, frustration and immaturity can sometimes go hand in hand. I can live with all of the current changes to the Mid-Iowa Council page. Thank you very much for helping me to improve it. I have switched IP's a couple of times, but have been attempting to maintain the page for a couple of years now. I have no want to create a wikipedia account. But I am learning many things about wikipeida as I continue to edit and add to the page. I appreciate your contributions! My problems with the earlier revision have been fixed for the most part and I am satisfied with this compromise. Thanks for your time and patience. 129.186.253.54 (talk) 04:33, 23 January 2010 (UTC) I also have a second image I would like to upload. http://www.blackeagletrader.com/set/450s9.jpg this image will be for the lodge info box. As far as fair use and rationale, it should all be the same as the council strip. If you could help me again that would be great. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.186.253.54 (talk) 04:48, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Apology accepted. I have been doing this a while, so I can make some sweeping changes in one edit to comply with the Manual of Style and with BSA styles. If you had an account, I would have pointed out the issues with the article. See Wikipedia:Why create an account? The lodge flap is uploaded. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:08, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Sexuality of Robert Baden-Powell. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sexuality of Robert Baden-Powell (4th nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:15, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

<ref> templates for list-defined references

Hi Gadget850. I notice that like some others, including me until now, you have utilsed the ((r)) template to achieve List-defined references.

Some technical issues have recently been highlighted relating to the use of the ((r)) template, that neither I nor others with whom I've had discussions, were aware of until now. While we have all been implementing the ((r)) template in good-faith, it turns out that it poses some technical problems for bots and scripts, causing some of them to not work properly.

It has been pointed out that list-defined references can also be achieved using <ref name=></ref> templates, which don't cause any difficulties for bots and scripts. I think this is both a fair point, and the easiest solution.

I don't know about you, but I didn't envisage technical problems caused by the use of the ((r)) template. My own purpose was simply to declutter article text and make it easier to edit the text and the references. This is the same for those with whom I had some considerable discussion, as we explored ways of doing this, before settling on what we now know are called list-defined references.

Because my introduction to list-defined references was via the ((r)) template, and the current technical issues had not yet surfaced, I naturally assumed that the ((r)) template was the way one achieved list-defined references. Per my user page, I did come to realise that the Harvard templates could also serve the purpose of decluttering articles and grouping the references at the bottom. But the Harvard templates, while useful in some contexts, can impose a degree of cumbersomeness over and above that of the list-defined reference method, meaning the latter is a more streamlined method.

Given my newly acquired awareness that ((r)) templates pose technical difficulties, whereas the pre-existing <ref> templates do the job just as easily, but don't cause technical difficulties, I have no difficulty acknowledging that and amending the ((r)) templates to <ref> templates. My reason of course is that I was not in the business of promoting any particular template, but using a suitable Wikitext to achieve the goal of creating list-defined references in some articles, insofar as list-defined references are a benefit to those articles and seen as a benefit.

The irony in all this is that it was our naive use of the ((r)) template which brought to the fore some technical issues which hitherto weren't salient. I have now updated a number of articles with the <ref> templates, and if you like, I would be quite happy to do the same with articles which you've worked on. I think it far more prudent to do that, than to cause unnecessary headaches for others, with the flow-on effect of derailling our own contributions. Regards Wotnow (talk) 04:08, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Stolen Valor Act

The individual we were responding to appears to have a habit of appearing at random and slamming both the OMSA as well as veterans who were discharged from the military with entry level separations. He has been very active at the NDSM article as well. The talk page is of interest as well; some year or two ago comments were posted which actually qualified as breaking WP:NPA, but no one ever caught it. Anyway, it would be a good idea to keep an act on the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 article. The info about the OMSA is bound to be removed again. Your watching of the NDSM article would also be very helpful. Thanks! -OberRanks (talk) 18:42, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

My profile - I think I need to start again

Hello Gadget850

I'm so pleased you left me a message as I could do with some help. I have already asked for help on the help desk but you seem like the person to help me.

I've created a profile and uploaded my photo to the wrong place.

I made a new user profile and attempted to embed my photo into my profile. All I wanted was to end up with one page on Wikipedia containing a few words and a photo of myself but I now have a profile page and a separate photo page which are both in the place. Is it possible to move my profile and photo back to Wikipedia as one profile page or to delete them and start again? The two pages I need to move are

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Lizzie_Charlton http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elizabeth_Charlton.jpg

The only contribution I have made to Wikipedia so far is a big mess. If you can find a way of fixing this I'd be very grateful. Thank you.--Elizabeth (talk) 18:26, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Welcome and thanks for asking. Both the image and the user page are on Wikimedia Commons, which is a repository for free-use images. I think you want to spruce up your Wikipedia user page. I started an infobox at User:Lizzie Charlton. You will find cute little userboxes on many userpages— see Wikipedia:Userboxes for some info or you can see mine at User:Gadget850/about.
Please remember that our purpose is to build the encyclopedia. You are allowed a lot of latitude on your userpage, but it should focus on our work here. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:31, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:4th_World_Scout_Jamboree.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:4th_World_Scout_Jamboree.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 11:16, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

quick query

Hi ... quick question about the quote box changes. Should I assume that other than checking their size and revising so the language fits best, as the size/spacing may have changed, there are not any issues I should have to worry about vis-a-vis the changes? Many thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 05:46, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

The features of {{quote box2}} and {{quote box3}} are now in {{quote box}}. There should be no size or spacing changes— let me know if you see something odd. |halign= still works, but is replaced by |qalign=, so I am changing that as I update the uses and making a few fixes to some odd implementations. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 05:51, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

I see you found the messed up divs that someone introduced into the Simspsons articles. I thought I fixed all of those in April 2009, but I missed those. See Template talk:Quote box2#Quote box eating the rest of the article. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:02, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Signpost: 22 March 2010

I don't know if you noticed but you've made the same edit three times to Big Brother 2009 (UK) using AWB. The reason is that your edits were reverted each time because AWB was removing paragraph spacing, meaning whole sections that should have been split into several paragraphs were all joined into one. I don't know if this is an AWB issue or something you're doing, but I think you should check what you're saving before you save it. I have manually fixed that article now, so you don't have to. anemoneprojectors talk 21:13, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I wish I had been informed on the first revert (AWB monitors the talk page and alerts you when you get a message). I have been previewing every page before saving, as there are 13 variants of the fn links. I double checked my find and replace and don't see the issue, so it must be one of the AWB general fixes— I will disable that. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:49, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Cool. I wasn't the one reverting you by the way, but I thought this time I should say something. I haven't been able to check the latest version of AWB as when I installed it it wouldn't work! But I checked a few of your other edits and it was doing the same thing. It seems like a bug to me, as it definitely shouldn't be doing it. anemoneprojectors talk 21:59, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Not a problem. If I am borking the formatting, the sooner I know, the sooner I can fix it and stop doing it. I could not get AWB to update, so I ended up downloading the latest version manually. I think I have edited every Big Brother article already, but there are some other reality shows. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:09, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

AWB

How do I update deprecated reference templates using AWB, I can't seem to find info on it anywhere. Paul2387 22:07, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

There is no general module. You have to use the find and replace feature and create regexes. And then check every article you edit for variations. If you give ma an example of what you want to do, I can get you started. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:11, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Basically what I want to is what you were doing here for example. Paul2387 22:21, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

I am working the pages left with {{fnb}}.

Fn link

Here are the find expressions to convert the fn link; there seems to be no consistency in how they were applied. It is a $deity awful mess.

''\[\[#fn(.*?)\|See\<br\>note\s(.*?)\]\]''
''\[\[#fn(.*?)\|See\<br\s\/\>note\s(.*?)\]\]''
\''<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|''See\<br /\>note\s(.*?)''\]\]\</cite\>
\<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|''See\<br\s/\>note\s(.*?)''\]\]\</cite\>
\<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|See\<br\>note\s(.*?)\]\]''\</cite\>
\<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|See\<br\s/\>note\s(.*?)\]\]''\</cite\>
\<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)|''(.*?)''\]\]\</cite\>
\<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|Note\s(.*?)\]\]\</cite\>
\<cite id="fn_(.*?)_back"\>\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|See\<br\>note\s(.*?)\]\]\</cite\>
\<cite id\="fn_(.*?)_back"\>\<sup\>\[\[#fn\|(.*?)\]\]\</sup\>\</cite\>
\\[\[#fn_(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]\</sup\>
\<sup\>'''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]'''\</sup\>
\<sup\>''\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]''\</sup\>
\<sup\>\<small\>\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]\</small\>\</sup\>
\<sup\>\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]\</sup\>
\[\[#fn(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]
\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|(.*?)\]\]
\[\[#fn\s(.*?)\|\<sup\>(.*?)\</sup\>\]\]
\{\{fn\|(.*?)\}\}
\{\{fn\|\((.*?)\)\}\}

Replace all with:

{{ref|$1|$2}}
Cleanup to remove the <small>...</small> tags
\{\{ref\|\s(.*?)\|\<small\>(.*?)\</small\>\}\}
\{\{ref\|(.*?)\|\<small\>(.*?)\</small\>\}\}
\{\{ref\|\s(.*?)\|''See\<br\s/\>note\s(.*?)''\}\}

Replace all with:

{{ref|$1|$2}}
For the {{fnb}} template
\{\{fnb\|(.*?)\}\}
\{\{fnb\|\((.*?)\)\}\}
\{\{fnb\s\|\s(.*?)\}\}

Replace all with:

{{note|$1|$1}}

Ensure regex is checked for each line, since you are using a capture.

See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Regular expression.

  • Metacharacters like > must be escaped as \>.
  • Newlines are \n and a space is \s
  • (.*?) captures everything in the sequence; $1 and $2 return the captured sequences.

---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 23:28, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for that, if I need any other Regular expressions I'll not hesitate to leave a message on your talk page.

Replacement of Rf templates

I'm not an AWB user, so I don't know if this is possible, but I can tell you that the gaming community would certainly appreciate you replacing Rf with Ref and Note instead of the R template. The R template creates excess clutter on the page with its "[note 1]" (instead of a simple "a") that Ref/Note do not. If you could do that for VG articles from this point out that would be appreciated. --Teancum (talk) 18:38, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

OK. I can't fix the cite errors caused by Rf without Ent or vice versa. I can't find the undefined or unused references and comment them out. There are 17 VG articles left, so they will be different. I can go back and change "Note" to something else such as nb. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:38, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: Adminship

I read your message but i'm not quite sure what you mean. Gobbleswoggler (talk) 18:31, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Gobbleswoggler. I'll try and simplify Gadget's statement. What he was trying to say with quality over quantity was that it is considered better to have 2,000 edits, but all of them being edits that greatly increase an article, rather than tons of edits that only make small changes. Try to see if you know a lot about somthing, and work to try and get it to a Did you know, Good article or Featured Article. I'm not saying that what you are doing right now is bad, updating stats is fine, but I don't think people at a request for adminship like a bunch of small edits. Now for the other part. What he meant in "What is there to show that you need the tools or somthing like that" is somthing like this: Why do you need the adminship tools? Writing content is able to be done by everyone, so that's not much of a reason. If you want to stop vandalisim, try following what the person said to you at the help desk on your section about Palao Nuni vandalsim and report vandals to WP:AIV. I'd suggest you download Twinkle to help you. If you don't like dealing with such things, you can try requests for pagr protection, a place where you can submit requests for a page to be locked from editing by certain editors if vandalisim on it gets too high (I personally consider that very easy to do). You could also try Articles, Templates, Redirects and Micellaneous for Deletion pages to vote on whether or not pages should be deleted( Speedy Deletion is a faster way). If you think a name is mean and does not fit the username policy, you can submit it at Usernames for administrative Attention. Look at this everyonce in awhile to comment on potential wiki-news Finally, try joining a Wikiproject which can help you talk with other editors who like the same stuff as you. Once you follow this advice and get a lot of substantial edits, look aqt Guide to Requests for Adminship. Hope this helps! (If you need any more pointers, ask me on my talk page, I'm always willing to help). Buggie111 (talk) 19:15, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Lesbian article

A little while ago I saw a problem with the article on Lesbians and figured out that it was some kind of syntax problem. I couldn't figure out at first what user:gadget850 was, thinking perhaps it was some kind of tool to create a table. But when I found your user page I figured it out. 56th FA

It is always appreciated when a topic discussed on a talk page is so well answered with irrefutable facts that the matter is resolved. Your recent answer to "(Pershing) or not?" did exactly that. I have browsed your archives and see you are rather busy so I thank you for your time in advance. Because you displayed expertise in this area I would like to ask if you can provide or help me find information regarding the 56th FA Cmd. Specifically I am looking for orders designating the unit as a Command. Any separate orders if not included deactivating the prior Brigade, and also the orders which raised the command levels within the Command by one grade.My76Strat (talk) 16:53, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

I wish I had more on the 56th FA. Most of my material is documented at User:Gadget850/Pershing bibliography, but I do have a bit that I have not gone through yet. There are other documents at http://pershingmissile.org/, but a lot are my scans. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 17:02, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Again

I created a profile here just so I could work with you as need be. As you can see I have made some compromises with you. But I am unwilling to compromise on some things. The profile is only so I can track your changes and edit them as necessary. It appears that is what you have been doing to me. I am glad that you are involved in Scouting and I appreciate what you do. 56th edit

I'm not sure what happened either but that was not my intentions. I was going to make mention that these were three of 50 causalities in total for the units history but decided to wait as it was late. I may have started the edit and somehow sidetracked. I thought some information was useful and would reference http://www.coldwar.org/articles/50s/pershing_missiles.asp as a source. I got to go to work right now and will check back when I return. If you get a chance please consider repairing some of it for me and I look forward to checking back when I return.My76Strat (talk) 10:55, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

I remember asking Rob Martin where he got that number— it was an estimate from one of the HHB safety guys. Most of those were auto accidents. The significant incidents were the 1971 helicopter crash at Pegnitz (37 dead) and the Heilbronn explosion. One of these days, I am going to start an article on the 4th Infantry Brigade and add the Pegnitz crash. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 11:19, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

After a thorough review, I see that apparently an unintended spell correction garbled the text of what was the existing article. As I reviewed prior to saving the edit, my focus was on the areas I had tried to append, and I missed the fact I had garbled other text. Having said these things, the opening paragraph and changes made under the "Pershing" heading, are as coherent as I intended after my best effort. I ask that if your time permits, review the opening statement and the Pershing changes and tell me if any are well enough to include, in your opinion, which I respect. Typing is not my best attribute, and until I learn to copy and move blocks of text, restorations by me would be tedious. In that I vested several hours to produce the text I have asked you to review. Anyway thank you for any consideration you give this matter.My76Strat (talk) 04:02, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

HTML.5 & citations

Hi Gadget. While reviewing some pages earlier this month (after a bit of a break from Wikipedia), I noticed your comment in an archived discussion] that "BTW: <tt>...</tt> will not be supported by HTML 5, which we are slowly moving towards". I made a mental note to check up on that, hence this comment. Are you referring to the <ref></ref> tags that are currently used in most citations? Regards Wotnow (talk) 04:25, 20 April 2010 (UTC) (Note: added correct hidden text so original text shows up. Wotnow (talk) 20:27, 20 April 2010 (UTC))

No. <ref>...</ref> tags are not HTML, they are part of the Cite extension. The <tt> tag formats teletype text. Full list of HTML 5 tags and unspported tags at http://www.w3schools.com/html5/html5_reference.asp (which seems down at the moment). ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:41, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

A question from the 56th FACOM talk page

The following question was copied from the 56th FACOM discussion page:

The box to the right of the opening paragraph shows two periods of active service, from 1942 through 1945 and 1951 through 1991. I am certain 51-91 is incorrect as the last period is factually known to be 1963 through 1991. I think it should be 42-45, 51-58 and 63-91 but am awaiting confirmation as to 51-58. Either way showing it as 51-91 is incorrect and inconsistent with the article itself.

I would consider changing the dates if your archives contain the correct answer to the question. My76Strat (talk) 23:13, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Infobox person

Ed,
I see you participated in this discussion some months ago about adding military service information to {{Infobox person}}. Apparently, the discussion trailed off with nothing being done—or have I overlooked something? With all the other available parameters this template has, it would seem that simply adding an optional military service= parameter is of equal or greater importance. Take, for example, Raymond V. Haysbert: while primarily notable for his business and civic endeavors, his Infobox is certainly deficient without mention of his Tuskegee Airmen service during WWII. Question

Hi Gadget, I (quite awkwardly) approached Rlevse about admin coaching since I noticed he was an administrator and remembered bumping into them on scouting-related pages. In a response that went better than I might have expected, he suggested I ask you. Here's the spiel: I was wondering you'd be interested in "admin-coaching" me. I'd promise not to get in your hair, but maybe undertake some projects you'd like to see done -- I'm sure you have things you wish you could get to if you had time. If you don't, or don't have time, please accept my apology for the intrusion. Regards. jheiv talk contribs 20:31, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

What are your interests? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 03:32, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Off-wiki I'm a hard science and math guy -- on-wiki I watch and contribute to those pages and also enjoy focusing on a single article and trying to get it to look like featured articles in it's respective categories. For the most part, my edits have been small maintenance edits -- sometimes I'll watch recent changes for an hour or so at a time -- I've created a page or two -- but more recently, I have been focusing on improving articles where there is an exceptional featured article or articles in that space. jheiv talk contribs 03:51, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

How about {{Cite visual}}? There was clear consensus to restrict this to non-video uses (e.g., signage), and hence many of the fields are entirely inappropriate. However, we first need to replace all video transclusions with {{cite episode}} and {{cite video}}. Once we have reduced the number of calls to only non-video uses, then we can probably clean it up a bit to make it more appropriate for signs, plaques, ... What do you think? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:03, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I started a category here to keep track of transclusions which can be likely replaced by either "video" or "episode". Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:33, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I notified Noraft; he requested some template help at the Help Desk and it turns out he has been sandboxing a template to cite signs. We should consider renaming the template to Cite sign. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 04:00, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Category cleared. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 15:39, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Great. I moved the template to {{cite sign}} and redirected {{cite visual}} to {{cite video}}, since that was the most common usage. I also updated {{cite sign}} to make it conform a bit better to citing signage, although it could use some more work. The number of transclusions of {{cite sign}} are very low right now, and we should tell Noraft to feel free to work on that template. Thanks again. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:48, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

FOIA information

Hello Gadget850, I have recently received over 200 documents under a freedom of information act request. This is a plethora of good information regarding the 56th FA Command. I will be adjusting some dates very soon and wanted you to know I will reference all relevant changes to the official document, but in many cases will not be able to provide a live link to this information. Rather like a copyrighted book is referenced. If you believe any of these documents should be shown, perhaps you can assist me in uploading them. Or I could scan a file and e-mail you to consider their inclusion. I also have many photos, but they are all photocopied pages of poor quality, but recognizable. Anyway I just wanted to let you know that I was going to be doing a few things in the near future as indicated. Regards. My76Strat (talk) 19:47, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Gutenberg

Looking at the source code for this template, it appears that is intended to be a citation template. Also, it appears a large number of uses are within <ref>...</ref> tags. Perhaps it would be a good idea to move this to {{cite Gutenberg}}, and switch the backend to use some standard {{citation}} framework. I already fixed the accessdate linking and added the more standard "title" for the title of the work, rather than "name". What do you think? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:00, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

If it is used within ref tags, then it should use cite book or a template based thereon. I scanned a sample of the articles where it was used, and saw it in use only in the External links section. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:23, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Website parameter

Hi Gadget850. I'm sorry to bother you with this, but however small the consensus was, it looked like a website= parameter in the {{cite web}} template was a good idea. Huntster (talk · contribs) recommended against my using the {{editprotected}} template because, it sounds like, the code for the website= parameter needs to be entirely written before the suggestion can be made for it to be input. However, this template is so complex, I didn't dare copying/pasting it into my sandbox to figure it out. Now I'm afraid of coming to a standstill... I'm watching articles being promoted to GA with references that show non-published websites in italics. Not a biggie, I'm sure, but I'd love to have the option to correct these (without using anti-italicizing apostrophes everywhere, which is a nuisance). Should I start a new discussion on the template talk page, with the subject being devoted to the adding or not adding of a website= parameter? Can I help the process some by writing the needed explanation for the /doc? Thanks so much for your help in the matter. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 18:49, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Nothing in the discussion on the use of character encoding. Feel free to revert. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:38, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
It's kind of hidden. You have to read the code to see it. See "Spaced en-dashes, not hyphens please, (e.g. "Before the schism - Joseph Smith's...", "Ref 13 needs an en-dash, not a hyphen for the year range.", "Ref 29 needs an en-dash, not a spaced hyphen.", "Ref 31 needs an en-dash, not an unspaced hyphen", etc. If this guy is wrong, by all mean, please chime it. I don’t know that he is, but I'm trying to get this threw the FL process.--ARTEST4ECHO talk 14:40, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Nothing about the actual encoding. You reverted. OK. It works either way. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:46, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
I guess I'm confused then. If it's wrong, I want to get it right. Can you tell me what the difference is, so I can get it right? Or I can change it your way as soon as the FL process is done, if this is just a matter of option as to what is best. It's all the same to me.--ARTEST4ECHO talk 14:48, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
There is no difference between &mdash; and —; the first is an HTML entity, the second is Unicode. The MediaWiki software renders HTML entities to Unicode characters. Many scripts, including WP:AWB clean these up by converting them to Unicode.
Where there is a space before an endash or emdash, it should be connected to the preceding word buy use of a non-breaking space (&nbsp;) ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 15:03, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
I guess I'm still confused. Please understand, I am not trying to cause a problem. I am honestly very confused. This is what I see. "Before the schism - Joseph Smith's..." to "Before the schism "en-dashes" Joseph Smith's..." to your way "Before the schism – Joseph Smith's...". To my untrained eye, it seems like It went from "-" to endash the to enspace with a "-". Anyway. I guess it's just beyond me. Since you know that there is no difference between &mdash; and —; and you think that it needs to that way, I will put it back. If Staxringold has a problem I will tell him to read here. I honestly don't understand why a "-" can be used or what the differences are between all three.--ARTEST4ECHO talk 15:21, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
I have a favor to ask you. This morning I found that User:Dabomb87 made changes to the hyphens in List of sects in the Latter Day Saint movement, at 10:32, 1 July 2010. Since I’m still confused I went threw MOS:DASH, MOS:ENDASH, MOS:EMDASH, and your input here and I now I'm more confused. Could you look over what this editor did to make sure he didn’t “unfix” the page? I would hate for something as small as hyphens to ruin the Featured list process.--ARTEST4ECHO talk 13:23, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Maybe I'm a dreamer...

I've been following the World Cup articles and I had a weird thought, maybe not so weird. You are the coding god, so I'd like your thoughts. What about adding uniforms to the World Scouting infobox, like as in Template:Football kit? Many articles have descriptions of color or partial photos, this would be a nice touch, I think. Your thoughts?--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 09:11, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

  • Most NSOs have separate uniforms for sections. What uniform would go on the national article?
I would say the 11-14 or basic Scout section, if it is an article on Cubs or Rovers, then theirs. If coed, basic color scheme only.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:49, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
What we could do is have a toggle so it would accept existing photographs, we have several, and in the case of something like you mentioned, a multiple image like File:AFCW-Uniform-DEN.PNG I prefer the simpler-detail of the soccer jersey graphic to the overly intricate football graphic-none of us are great artists so simple is better.
  • The BSA is simple: blue/blue, tan/green, and green/gray. Scouts Australia is not so simple, as they use a blue shirt with different color sleeves.
The football kit template actually accounts for different color sleeves. That is doable.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:49, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Created it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Article incubator/Template:Infobox WorldScouting uniform--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:49, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
What we could do is add to the existing template a line like |colors = cardinal and gray {{color box|maroon}}{{color box|gray}} from {{Infobox school}}. That would allow us to beta-test the idea, see what we run into and allow us to collect and collate the information we already do have at hand.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:08, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
Check out this cool recent svg from Commons ! Something like that? What are your thoughts on the color box to the existing template for the time being? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:04, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

{{AF Cite Book}}? Horrible name, but altogether no worse than many in Category:Specific-source templates. Haven't touched that one. I have thrown a few template into that category recently, and intend to weed through it someday. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:25, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Imdb

Is Imdb a RS? Several entries in the Eagle list use it and that user has put Moody back in. I'm leery of Imdb, it's almost as bad as NNDB.RlevseTalk 19:28, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

No, which is why the field was removed from the film infobox. IMDB is updated based on user input. Consensus is that IMDB is fine as an external ink, but not as a source. I have looked, but did not find any source to indicate that Moody is an Eagle Scout. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:33, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
See current discussions at Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:31, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Then we have some cleanup to do on the Eagle list, it's a ref in more than one case.RlevseTalk 21:05, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Looks like 3 IMDB refs, but gobs of dead links. I've fixed about 5 of them. Can you help on these? A few could maybe be fixed with archive URLs. RlevseTalk 03:22, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Polynesia

I found this at http://media.scoutwiki.org/Image:Polynesiascouts.gif , I don't know if this should replace File:Conseil du Scoutisme polynésien.png or if a completely new file should be created-your thoughts? I am not married to keeping the old one, they are close enough in basic details.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 16:20, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I would not worry about it yet. The load speed is OK, it is less than 75% of the template expand limit and it isn't expanding at a high rate. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
It's worth noting that the page size is still much smaller than the tenth-largest list. Dabomb87 (talk) 13:51, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

28 August edits

If you are here because of concerns about some of my edits this morning, then let me apologize now. Looks like I got hit by a virus and copy & paste inserted some odd content that I did not catch. I have recovered my PC and I think I fixed all of my edits. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:45, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Wow.RlevseTalk 19:09, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Damnedest thing. I was editing a Google document around the same time and crap kept getting pasted— that is when I noticed. Then the popups started. I ran several scans and found yet another variant of Vundo and some others. Think this PC is clean again. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:34, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
I didn't have it in real life like you, but I now have a way to retract my gaffes....."Vundo made me do it".  :-) North8000 (talk) 14:29, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Do you have your antivirus definitions auto-updated? RlevseTalk 17:01, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
It got in through a CD of NYLT material I am printing for the next course. I run good AV and malware and it stays up to date, but none of it is perfect. I had two other articles open and had pasted crap into them, but luckily previewed before saving. I also had a Google document open where I was doing menu suggestions for the upcoming canoe trip. This was a newer variant of Vundo, which is a PITA in itself. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:49, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
So some BSA entity sent out infected software? RlevseTalk 10:06, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
No— this was a burned CD. I let the originator know he had a problem. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 10:13, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Why did you protect the template-doc's talkpage and not the template-doc itself? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 05:09, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

The doc page was protected September 29, 2009 by Juliancolton; I protected the talk page on December 25, 2009. I can't remember the reason now. Is there an issue? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 09:59, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Strange behaviour by the devil

Resolved

A strange thing by a devil you introduced. Any idea about this: Two archived userpages ended up in a regular Category-page (=undesired).

  1. User talk:Kintetsubuffalo/Archive 6 has a category, and so appears in Category:Typography. This is Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk.
  2. User talk:Rlevse/Archive 13 has a category, and so appears in Category:Typography.

These Talkpages had an emoticon-like thing: {{:)|devil}}, entered by User:Gadget850 (e.g. 16:16, 12 November 2009). This thing sort of copied/substrituted (???) the whole regular page Bracket into the Talkpage. That introduced the (three) Bracket-categories into the Talk. Workings are unclear to me. But I made the code nowiki, and now it's solved as far as I could check.
There could be more pages that still have the emoticon. Do you have any idea what went on? I can't get anything about the emoticon-does-article change.
To be clear, the two pages are clean now, and are removed from the category-page(s). -DePiep (talk) 13:42, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

This is my diff, the pre version still showing the import of Bracket by Gadget850 10:30, 31 March 2009 (UTC) -DePiep (talk) 13:50, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
{{ikon}} was deleted on June 2, 2010. It should have been replaced by {{=)}} but it looks like a typo replaced it with {{:)}}. Now, content within double braces normally transcludes a template, but starting it with a colon means you want to transclude an article, in this case ), which redirects to bracket. Checking contributions, it looks like those were the only two pages affected. Looks like ) is linked in odd ways on other pages, but it isn't transcluded. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 15:46, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for replying. From a fresh view, I get it. It was transclusion (I'll skip why you introduced a devil ;-) ). All clear now. -DePiep (talk) 17:35, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

The Milhist election has started!

The Military history WikiProject coordinator election has started. You are cordially invited to help pick fourteen new coordinators from a pool of twenty candidates. This time round, the term has increased from six to twelve months so it is doubly important that you have your say! Please cast your vote here no later than 23:59 (UTC) on Tuesday, 28 September 2010.

With many thanks in advance for your participation from the coordinator team,  Roger Davies talk 21:39, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you and a ?

Thank you for alerting me about the need to change my username and directing me to the correct location to do so. Question for you- I made some edits earlier under Staunton, Virginia to simply add relevant info to the page under Parks and Recreation. I attempted to add a hyperlink to the actual City of Staunton Parks & Recreation website. I'm not specifically promoting an individual program or class the Recreation Department is offering, simply a link to the Department website as it pertains to the section title.

Can you tell me why this was not allowed? Was it because of my original name and do you know if it will be deleted if I make another attempt at this?

Thanks much! --StauntonRecreation (talk) 20:49, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Right now they are at Template:Scout_kit/sandbox and Template:Girlscout_kit/sandbox. Or do you mean, how are they incorporated? A good example would be Manchester United F.C.'s infobox.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 17:44, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Scouting in Washington

Hi, I just rolled back your removal of almost all the content in Scouting in Washington, because I couldn't see any reason for the mass deletion! If this is really what you want to do, please do it again – perhaps leaving a note on the talk page too. Many thanks - Pointillist (talk) 21:17, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

You must have caught this as I saved changes in sequence. See the new Chief Seattle Council. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:20, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I eventually worked out what was going on (sigh). So ignore the above - I've undone my rollback. Perhaps you could be just a tad more explicit in your edit summaries though! Anyway, no harm done - Pointillist (talk) 21:24, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, had a number of tabs open as I created camp and lodge redirects. No worries. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:25, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Blindly following Gadget

I blindly copied your entire monobook.CSS as my monobook.CSS after reading Logged out help. I figured with a name like Gadget, you must know what you are doing. Is there any other features of your/my new monobook that I should know about? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:37, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

I just copied your monobook.js as my monobook.js. I'm not sure what that did, but it got rid of the red link above my monobook.CSS file. Before saving the monobook.CSS, I did see a green Save button. However, I don't see it now. Would you please fix this for me or let me know what I need to do to fix it. Thanks. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:48, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Eagle Scout verification - Outten

Hi Gadget850,

I am writing regarding your recent removal of Mr. Outten from the Wikipedia page List of Eagle Scouts (Boy Scouts of America). Given that the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) does not currently maintain an online database for all Eagle scouts, the most reliable way to instantaneously confirm that a scout did in fact receive the award is to contact the BSA's Eagle Scout Service at 1-800-BSA-INFO (1-800-272-4636). Since 1912, they have maintained records of everyone who has attained the rank of Eagle. With the exception of those who have received a DESA citation, whose name appears on a downloadable list at NESA (http://www.nesa.org/distinguishedaward.html) , it is otherwise difficult rely solely on an Internet search. Consequently, a toll free phone call may allow you to verify the achievement of Mr. Outten and other Eagle Scouts who would otherwise be overlooked as unverifiable. Verifications can also be requested in writing at: Eagle Scout Service, S 220, National Office, Boy Scouts of America, 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving, Texas USA 75015-2079

Thank you71.149.252.160 (talk) 10:00, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

I am well aware of how to contact the BSA in this regard. The verifiability policy requires that we use reliable, published sources. It is the obligation of the editor who adds a statement to ensure it has the proper references. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 15:03, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
