Country outlines project update - 2009/03/08
Remember "Around the World"?
Well, we've been around the World, and around again (virtually speaking, on Wikipedia), on this project.
Things have been slowing down again, so it's time for a big push...
We've gone live
This project needed a shot in the arm. Also, its draft pages have been littering Wikipedia's categories for months. The time seemed right to move all the country outline drafts to article space.
WHAT???
Well, the drafts had been sitting in Wikipedia space for a year.
WHAT???
Development has been moving at a snail's pace and we could use the help of the Wikipedia community at large (who are more likely to find these if they are in article space).
WHAT???
Yes, we've gone live. :)
This puts pressure on us to get the blatantly incomplete elements of these outlines done. The only glaring problem is the government branches sections. These need to be corrected ASAP.
I've mentioned THE GOVERNMENT BRANCHES SECTIONS many times to many people over the past year, but the problem just doesn't seem to have been taken seriously. So let me put it another way:
HELP!!! I need your help on this now. Almost all the countries have a government with an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. The links for these branches need to be completed for each country outline:
- Here's a convenient list you can use WP:LINKY on to access and edit these quickly. Please copy the list's link to the top of your talk page so that you can access it easily.
If you spot any standardization in links, and ways we can automate parts of this process, or for groups of countries that have links in common, please let me know!
Administrative support for outlines
There has been growing pressure on me to write up the administrative pages for outlines - their instructions, guidelines, etc. Therefore, I'm now in the process of composing these. Fortunately, it is mostly a matter of gathering material from messages I've written to you guys over the past year. Still, this is taking up most of my time, and I will be buried in these for the foreseeable future.
Traffic control
The next big task after the government branches sections are cleaned up is link support for the outlines.
There's quite a list of links and notices that need to be put in place around Wikipedia, providing access to them to readers, and alerting editors to the need to develop and maintain these pages. This will keep our bot people very busy (and happy).
But the most important thing right now is to get the government branches sections completed. So please, put your bots aside, roll up your shirt sleeves, and start typing.
Thank you.

Lupin
would you have the ability to tweak the lupin spell checking tool? I'd like (at least my version) to show the actual "diff" above the edit box. I've seen it done before, but don't remember the circumstances. The reasons I'd like to see the diff are:
- First and most obvious - UK, Canada, US spellings aren't always the same.
- If the spelling change is in a reference, it can throw things off.
- If the spelling change is in a quote, it makes the quote inaccurate.
Any chance you can help with this? — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 07:23, 17 March 2009 (UTC) (I noticed the hat - and that you were more technically inclined, that's the reason I ask)

WikiCup
Hello Garden. Did I read correctly in the last newsletter that nominated items still count in future rounds if not already dealt with? That would actually be great. I've been waiting ages for Delorentos to go through at GA and thought when I nominated it that there was plenty of time but now it probably doesn't really stand a chance even though it is one of the five oldest nominations. --candle•wicke 02:25, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Silent Alarm
Hey, I did a bit more editing and added the 'Personnel' section. It's looking better and better.
One thing though: before we make any more edits, can we ask for a re-appraisal of the quality to see if the major changes done this past week have increased its quality from B?
It'd be good to find out so that we know what to do next by comparing it with other FAs (thanks for Made in the Dark btw. I had a look and I think it's the most similar for us to imitate). Rafablu88 (talk) 03:20, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- How long do you think we should wait for a GA review? Especially since we really need some advice before we do more edits. I don't think I'm gonna touch it any further till a review. Should we remind them in the near future or actually get an editor to have a look? Do you know anyone? Rafablu88 (talk) 02:40, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Delorentos GA review
Hello! Thank you for your input – and yes, I have very nearly forgotten them at this stage! I was under the impression that music was a popular area when it came to editing and reviewing – I'll have to revise that notion... Delorentos still "consist" though – until May at least. I'm not sure what to make of the references ordering as I've never encountered that before and don't mind at all which order they are in. Is there a rule I'm unaware of? What "weird speech marks"? They look fine from my side of the screen - I can only presume that since it was a quote I probably copied and pasted it to allow no room for error but I still don't see anything unusual. On the notability of those people, I should think so, the only problem is I haven't gotten round to creating them yet... and unfortunately nobody else will either by the time hell has frozen over... the very mention of State in a source coming from their former arch-rivals (on the magazine front) must mean something... so how does it compare now? Ah yes, I've been dropping accidental Delorentos puns all over this statement so I shall leave you with the title of the eleventh – not 11th ;) – track of In Love with Detail.
- "Until Next Time". --candle•wicke 21:26, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I meant to do that. Now you're just showing off your multi-coloured signatures with all those messages! ;) --candle•wicke 21:57, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that last signature didn't impress quite as much – :P – it's very similar to the first one. ;) Have you ever done it in pink? I don't think I've ever asked that question before and suspect I probably never will again. :D --candle•wicke 22:05, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'll probably get the reviewing bug some time. But right now it tends to be content creation and improvement. I'm working in a rather isolated and neglected area... :( Thank you. :D Is the review left on the talk page? --candle•wicke 13:38, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah yes, perhaps. I'll certainly be able to find some time for indie bands in the summer... although I'm inclined to work on Irish music as there are more than enough around to look after other countries, especially related to the United States and United Kingdom... whereas I seem to be the only person hovering within a kilometre of the abandoned WikiProject Irish Music... I'm practically choking on tumbleweed... still, Wales is near enough... what I meant was, does the review remain on the talk page? It seems as if everyone has a different way of reviewing... --candle•wicke 20:32, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- Franz Ferdinand spring immediately to mind. Belle & Sebastian. I'm aware of Glasvegas. And Idlewild. The View. Hard to avoid The Fratellis. Actually heard KT Tunstall on the radio a few hours ago. Biffy Clyro. Annie Lennox. Saw The Breakfast Club during the week so I've had "Don't You (Forget About Me)" going through my head a bit. The "Sunshine Superman" song – probably from that cider ad mentioned in the article. The Proclaimers. The Fire Engines because of the Franz Ferdinand cover. Just went through some of the categories, I recognise a few more but I'm familiar with at least one song for each of the above right through to all three albums for the very first. I would presume you were previously unaware of Delorentos – but now are no doubt familiar with their entire career(!) Who/what do you know of Irish music? --candle•wicke 22:29, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah yes, we're pretty good at producing pop groups, Louis Walsh is currently in the process of unleashing another girl band upon us. They don't even have a name so I'm not sure I would know where to even begin searching for a link. :P Nope, oddly enough I don't mind borrowing Snow Patrol from the other side. Nor Duke Special either for that matter. I've been a bit distracted due to the unexpected resignation of one of Ireland's leading chat show hosts, Pat Kenny, live on air a few hours ago – been watching for vandals and adding sources as they come, since there appears not to have been any other interested parties on duty. You'll know of The Cranberries perhaps? They seem have impacted the international charts. Then there's Sinéad O'Connor I suppose, although, according to those I've been in contact with from the United States, she was a bit of a one hit wonder. I was also surprised at how well-known another recent GA of mine, Lisa Hannigan, was in the US – probably better known though for collaborating with Damien Rice. Who was previously in Juniper with the rest of what is now Bell X1, who have appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. Then there's The Frames, fronted by the Academy Award-winning, Grammy Award-nominated Glen Hansard. The Stunning, slightly connected with The Walls who did feature on the soundtrack of UEFA Euro 2004 by EA Sports, seems to be their highest point... The Thrills? I can barely remember them but I think they had some success... The Boomtown Rats – forever in the shadow of Bob Geldof of course... Thin Lizzy... probably would have outside recognition... Future Kings of Spain... probably don't, but still, a good band... Fight Like Apes? I think they've been doing OK – they made it to Glastonbury last year... Ham Sandwich – always being given grief over their name... Fred – seem to be doing well in Canada of all places... Royseven seem to have a decent German following... The Flaws have been played on Italian radio and television... The Aftermath have ties with Kaiser Chiefs... then there's the more pop-oriented rock bands like The Blizzards and The Coronas who have a pretty decent following at home but probably not much elsewhere... The Script went to the UK and came back more famous than when they started... Republic of Loose were at Glasto too I think... Aslan... Picturehouse... Pony Club... The Frank and Walters... The Saw Doctors... Something Happens... Messiah J and the Expert... The Sultans of Ping FC... The Immediate were good – then they went the same way as Delorentos... Juno Falls? Brad Pitt apparently likes them... I must work on Mick Flannery. Cathy Davey too. These musicians and bands are all in an awful state! :P Now I'm clutching at straws... you'd really want to be indie-obsessed to have heard of very many of these outside Ireland... amazing what such a small country can come up with – although Ireland always seems to be punching above its weight... we've even "claimed" R.E.M and Kylie Minogue... can't believe we've gotten this far without mentioning that obvious internationally-acclaimed Irish band that everybody seems to have heard of... apologies for the longest reply ever... hard to stop once I get started on this topic... ;) --candle•wicke 03:19, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
