Vegetarianism

[edit]

I just saw your comment on WT:HNB and thought you'd find this information interesting: While it is true that most Indians avoid beef, the statement that "Most Hindus are veggie, especially in the south, by birth" is a commonly held (including by me till recently) misconception. Actual numbers show that vegetarianism is relatively rare in Southern (coastal) states compared to Northern (land-locked) states, with

"lowest proportion of vegetarian families are in coastal States such as Kerala (2%), Tamil Nadu (8%), Andhra Pradesh (4%), Orissa (8%) and Bengal (3%). Most land-locked States, especially in the west and north, are places with the highest proportion of vegetarian families: Rajasthan (63 per cent), Haryana (62 per cent), Punjab (48 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (33 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (35 per cent) and Gujarat (45 per cent)." [1]

Note, that the quote talks about "vegetarian families" so it is not a simple matter of people reluctantly eating meat due to convenience. I hope you find that as illuminating as I did. Also see: Vegetarianism in specific countries. Welcome to the knowledge source of wikipedia ! Abecedare 18:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
