Hubbert peak theory / Peak oil

[edit]

Hi. I had added a section to Hubbert peak theory titled Difficulty of a reliable external assesment. I just saw that you moved it to Peak Oil and edited it as Quantifying reserves. Although I don't necessarily object to the move, or even the edit, it would have been nice to mention it on the talk page of the article(s) and briefly justify the rationale for the change - especially in the context of the split and its uncertainties. Sincerely. (NB : please answer on this page for the continuity of the discussion.) - Fils du Soleil 01:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fils du Soleil. The extent of the reserves will have a major impact on the date of peak oil, and the difficulty in assessing the extent of the reserves significantly adds to the uncertainty over forecasting the date. However even a very significant change in the date of peak oil will not, of itself, prove or disprove the theory. That was the reason for the changed location. The title change was partly to cut the title length, and partly because the text implies that internal assessments are difficult too (e.g. for Shell), not just external ones. On your more general point, I would agree that mentioning the move on the talk page would have aided continuity, and I'm sorry if it took you a little time to locate your contribution (which, incidentally, is an important one). Thanks for your answer. Like I said, I see the logic in the changes you made. But specially in the somewhat confused context of the split, keeping track on the talk page of the whats and whys is even more important than usual. Best. - Fils du Soleil 23:58, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
