Speedy deletion of MatsuriCon

A tag has been placed on MatsuriCon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. I don't think this article should be deleted because I'm new to Wikipedia. (I'm still learning how to edit an article and how to make the article presentable). Earlier last year I was looking for an anime convention to attend in Ohio besides Ohayocon. I found Anime Punch! and had every intention on attending but I couldn't make it. I discovered MatsuriCon on www.animecons.com and decided to attend that one. I noticed that if you type in Anime Punch! in Wikipedia, there's information about it. I wanted to know some information about MatsuriCon before I attend it, wanted to know the background/history through Wikipedia. There wasn't any, so I decided that since I've experience it, I should provide information about in case someone wanted to know about the history/background of MatsuriCon.

Notability & references for MatsuriCon

In this case, the article does not assert the notability of the subject, nor does it provide references where the subject has received "significant coverage" in "reliable sources" unconnected to the subject. Notability of MatsuriCon

Hi FemaleWolfDemon

You wrote, "if there is something I can do to make this more significant. Tell me! Don't just stand there and criticize, HELP!" at WP:Articles for deletion/MatsuriCon. I understand your frustration with the process, but would like to ask you to consider looking at this from a different perspective.

You mention a number of reasons that information on MatsuriCon might be valuable to people. Nobody (as far as I can tell) disputes those reasons. However, there is a nearly infinite amount of useful information that does not belong in an encyclopedia. You may find it useful to review the following policy statements:

General notability policy
Notability policy for organizations and companies (not strictly relevant, but may be helpful context)
Neutral point of view policy
What Wikipedia is not
Verifiability policy

If you have additional third party information that demonstrates the topic is notable (not simply your assertion that it is notable, which, per the WP:NPOV policy mentioned above, does not suffice), then add the information to the article. However, the editors who have weighed in at the AfD discussion page have found (a) that the facts that are demonstrated (such as number of attendees) do lead to a conclusion of non-notability; and (b) that (despite good faith searches for additional information) no other available sources point to an opposite conclusion.

In other words, the lack of notability here appears (to those taking part in the AfD discussion) to be fundamental to the topic itself, not to the way the article is written.

Ok, so that helps out a little. I understand that if there were more third party evidence it would be helpful, but I'm sure you want something from like a press release or something. (Which they only have available on Animecons.com and Animenewsnetwork.com) Like I said, not a big con, not a lot of coverage like Anime Expo and Ohayocon. If you want third party resources, the only ones available will probably be from a DeviantArt account, Live Journal account, and MySpace. If that's the kind of coverage you need than I will post it.

As of right now, I'm working on getting more information from the heads of MatsuriCon. No guarantee that they will get back to me in a timely manner though. So I'm just doing the best I can right now. In the meantime, I will try my hardest to understand this 'Articles of Notability' even though I fell like I'm up a pole without a paddle when I read them. Unless you've got some dictionary for "encyclopedia rules" than I'm still going to feel like I'm up a pole without a paddle when I read it. Thanks, in a small way.

Actually, press releases do not constitute sources "independent of the subject". Please review the fourth bullet point at the general notability guideline. The key is that something notable will have other reliable, independent sources cover it.

With respect to your request for "encyclopedia rules", my previous note to you laid out the key ones. There are rules, and (again) here are the most relevant ones: notability, verifiability, and neutral point of view. Even 100% verifiable accuracy does not turn a non-notable subject into a notable one, which seems to be what you're up against in this instance.

Notability of MatsuriCon 2

I've read the rules, time and time again. (No offense) So basically they're saying that if it isn't something notable, than it won't be permitted to waste precious Wikipedia space. I thought that they would be interested in an article like this because it contributes to ever-growing anime fandom. (There are quite a lot of articles on here about anime cons, so what's wrong with keeping up-to-date on the newer ones popping up that aren't so overwhelming?) Which is also very interesting because I read that 'Notability' part of the Wikipedia Rules, and as far as I am concerned, I've done all that they require: "Significant Coverage", "Reliable", "Sources", "Independent of the subject", and even "Presumed."

So what this tells me is that because it's a small con and because it didn't have a significant amount of attendance, therefore it's a piece of crap. That's pretty sad, seeing how this is supposed to be a source of information. A LOT of people rely on this site for information when all Google does is list a bunch of websites with keywords...and you're stuck combing through the sites for that "right kind" of information. Don't get me wrong, I think it would be much more helpful if anime convention sites listed the history of their progress on their sites but that isn't happening at the moment so we're stuck with Wikipedia, Animecons.com, and AnimeNewsNetwork.com or MySpace Blogs. -FemaleWolfDemon 9:57, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
