Hello, I'm Amartyabag. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Clothing in India because it appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Amartyabag TALK2ME 16:47, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:24, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Requested username:

Request reason:

I understood that my contributions appeared as promotional, which was not my intention. I just want to add information about India and fashion, which is my passion.

Decline reason:

Insufficient responses to requests for clarification of their way forward. No showing that they understand notability or WP:SPAM (✉→BWilkins←✎) 10:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Strandofsilk, I fixed the formatting on your unblock request, but you need to fill in a reason why you should be unblocked. In your case, for instance, you need to specifically explain what you are going to do on Wikipedia other than spam your company. Qwyrxian (talk) 14:55, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you understand that you cannot link to the strandofsilk site in any way? Ever? On any page in Wikipedia? The only exception would be if the site got it's own Wikipedia article, but I see that that's already been declined three times, and probably won't happen, since 99% or more of all web pages are simply not notable enough for a Wikipedia article.
I think something that might help me or other admins evaluate this request is if you gave an example of something you would add to a Wikipedia article, now that you know the rules. Tell us here what page you would add the info to, what info you would add, and what reliable source you would use to support that addition. Qwyrxian (talk) 00:01, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Qwyrxian, here is an example of what I would like to post: New Page : Anarkali Dress An Anarkali Dress can be described as a long kurta which has a much more defined waistline and bust as compared to a traditional Salwar kameez suit. The kurta is fitted on the bust and normally features large pleats flowing around the legs like an umbrella. Derived from the word Kali, which means a bud.

Anarkali dresses owe their name to Anarkali - a famous courtesan in the court of a great mughal emperor. The story of Anarkali was immortalised because of her affair with the emperor's son, that ended in tragedy when Anarkali was buried alive behind a wall.

I'm not sure how the description of a dress needs a new article? This isn't FashionWiki (✉→BWilkins←✎) 10:52, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is a specific kind of dress from India that is popular. It is the same reason that all the specific pages on types of dresses already exist on wikipedia - (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Sari) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.112.244.250 (talk) 09:40, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

After thoroughly reading the Wikipedia policy, I admit that I did not entirely understand the rules of WP: SPAM. I now know that content appearing to be promotional (e.g. linking to our site) cannot be used as a source and added as an external links, that they are considered as spam, even though those links were related to the content of the article. I noted this being used for some of the links on some articles, and thought that this was ok as long as the information was relevant. But it appears that this is not the case, and I am going to ensure that this does not get repeated in the future. I subsequently tried to create a separate article for a piece of Indian clothing that I found was important and also similar to other articles on such clothes on Wikipedia. The content is factual and various external sources had been used to verify the same, but it subsequently appeared that the third party sources violated the notability guideline, since the sources were found to be unreliable - this is not going to happen again in the future. I am going to be henceforth very careful about the Wikipedia guidelines and ensure that our content is not in violation of the policies. I hope you can give me another chance to prove myself and add quality content that is going to be beneficial for the whole community.

Accept reason:

Please make sure to make a request for a change of username here. Bwilkins is incorrect; notable clothing styles are perfectly acceptable subjects for Wikipedia articles. I apologize that this took so long. You may find some helpful resources and editors at WikiProject Fashion and WikiProject India. Danger High voltage! 17:49, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on your user page, User:Strandofsilk, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group or service, and which is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages: user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you can indicate why the page is not blatant advertising, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: Click here to contest this speedy deletion which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to your user talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also edit this page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would help make it encyclopedic. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Glaisher (talk) 17:32, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

[edit]
Stop icon
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for advertising or promotion. From your contributions, this seems to be your only purpose. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|reason=

Why do you believe you should be unblocked? - I am extremely sorry for violating Wikipedia's policy against advertising. I took over this account and foolishly did not check its history. If I had done so, I would have realised the implications of creating a user page with promotional content. - My intentions on Wikipedia are not to promote anything, but instead to contribute useful, verifiable content on topics I have a personal interest in. This being the first time I have contributed to Wikipedia, I now realise the absolute importance of checking Wikipedia's policies on content creation. - To be honest, I did not realise that the same rules applied to the userpage - I believed that the userpage was a space only for the individual user to edit in any way they liked. - I was trying to contribute twenty good-quality contributions in order to get my account confirmed: the creation of a userpage seemed like a common-sense contribution to make, and Wikipedia recommends creating one to explain a user’s background and intentions on the site. This was an assumption that was made in grave error. - I have reviewed the page ‘Wikipedia:User Pages’ now and I understand what is and what is not allowed on a user page. The reason for me trying to become a confirmed user was so that I could upload original photographic content under a Creative Commons license. I am wholeheartedly sorry for my mistake, and I hope that you will give me a chance to actively contribute in a useful manner to Wikipedia. If you are unblocked, what articles do you intend to edit? - I am keen to contribute to and edit pages on Indian fashion and fashion designers. I believe that many articles on this topic are characterized by spelling, grammar and usage mistakes. Moreover, many articles are short, or lack visual elements. I am willing to contribute original content in this manner, particularly by providing (original!) photographs licensed under Creative Commons. I would like to contribute further to these articles, - Roopa Vohra: 7 pages referring to her, but no page on her - Anita Dongre: Short page on her - could be expanded - Meera Mahadevia: 1 page referring to her, but no page on her - Rajesh Pratap Singh: Long page on him, but no images - Babita Malkani: 1 page referring to her, but no page on her - Anarkali Salwar Suit: Page was created in the past by ourselves, but is in poor shape - Abraham & Thakore: 7 pages referring to them, but no page on them

Why do you think there is a block currently affecting you? If you believe it's in error, tell us how. - My account was indefinitely blocked for the reason that I posted promotional content on my user page. I did not realise that the rules applying to Wikipedia articles also applied to user pages. This was a genuine mistake on my part, which resulted both from not reading up on Wikipedia policy as well as a failure to look at the history of my account. Had I done so, I would certainly never have posted what I did.

Is there anything else you would like us to consider when reviewing your block? - I believe that the few edits which I made to articles on Indian fashion before I posted the offending material on my userpage demonstrate my intentions and the kind of contributions I would like to make in the future on Wikipedia. I have edited pages on ‘Clothing in India’, ‘Anita Dongre’ and ‘Rajesh Pratap Singh’ as well as starting an article on ‘Roopa Vohra’ which I had hoped to expand further before being blocked. I had also planned to create pages on three other designers which I have an interest in: Meera Mahadevia, Babita Malkani and Abraham & Thakore, etc. Each of these designers is mentioned elsewhere on Wikipedia but there are no articles on the designers themselves. I have also become aware of the India WikiProject, which I would thoroughly enjoy contributing to. I am particularly interested in the Adopt and Article section of the project, to help keep articles in a satisfactory condition, particularly since many articles there are written in poor English.

Note from CEO of strand of silk: I realise that this is an embarrassing situation for ourselves, especially since the previous ban was removed. The account is managed internally in the company and since the last ban, strict instructions had been given to everyone in the team not to ever post links to our site, but only put in relevant content. Clearly this instruction has been violated by one of our team members. Our intention is to spread awareness about Indian designers and certainly not to advertise about strand of silk. Obviously, I can only apologise for this situation and put in place appropriate measures internally in the company to ensure that this does not happen again. However, if the decision is to keep the ban, I'll understand the same. I would like to point out that our team has identified articles that they can contribute appropriately to and would love to continue contributing to Wikipedia if given a chance. Thank you.

. However, you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.
  • I'd waffled about blocking you, but the more I think about it the more this is clearly a case of spamming. You were given a pretty big warning about spamming, so there really was no reason for you to recreate a spam userpage for User:Strandofsilk. (Your previous username, which you'd had unblocked by an admin.) I'm sorry, but I can't run the risk of unblocking you and then having you attempt to re-add another spam userpage or mainspace page at some point in time. I'll ask another admin to review this, but you had already had sufficient warnings about spamming. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 18:03, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Roopa Vohra requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Tek022 | Comments? 06:11, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
