This week's article for improvement (week 23, 2022)
Squash is a racket and ball sport played by two or four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. The players alternate in striking the ball with their rackets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return.

note re some ideas
I have some ideas on ways to develop greater resources for community involvement in developing and editing wikipedia. I would like to discuss with you at some point if possible. I am also located in NYC. is there some way to mention a few ideas to you, and to discuss with you? please feel free to let me know any communication method or platform that you might prefer. i appreciate your help. please ping me if you reply. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 20:43, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Sm8900 thanks for your ping. What sort of ideas do you have in mind? FULBERT (talk) 15:19, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
thanks so much for your reply. ok, here are my ideas, in brief. I can elaborate on any of these any time.
1) I am Lead Coordinator at WP:HIST. I have a few ideas I've been working on in specific areas of history, including contemporary history, plus political history plus navboxes.
2) as part of contemporary history, I created Contemprary Hist Task Force. I created a new type of article, 2020s in political history; this is designed to foster an encyclopedic, consolidated, and concerted approach to chronicling current history. we already have articles for every individual noteworthy event, as they occur, this "2020s in __" article is designed to encourage an encyclopedic approach, by providing one central chronicle, to complement the many articles on individual events.
3) ok, here is where we get into some ideas for fostering greater collaborative and community effort. I have already joined several Zoom calls for the local NYC Meetup. they have been energizing and outstanding.
4) my ideas, or one of them, is to create and foster greater editor communication, similar to the NYC Meetup page, editing efforts, and zoom calls, but centered around topical areas, rather than around geographical areas.
5) so as part of that, I was thinking to create a Task Force within WikiProject History, but then invite editors from the multiple highly active Wikiprojects for topical areas, and then use their input to create some combined community effort, to combine, compile, and to foster various community ideas in regards to ideas for editing and approaching topics relating to history at Wikipedia. the best examples of active History wikiprojects are absolutely WP:MILHIST and WP:WIR, but there are many other fanatstic active wikiprojects as well.
I would like to simply communicate with at least one other community member on a regular basis, to hash out these ideas, and to make them truly workable and beneficial to the community as a whole. when I saw your user page, you seemed like a highly beneficial and helpful person to approach. I was encouraged by your high public efforts and public profile. I noted your use of your real name, your public role, and the fact that you are located here in NYC. I could really use your help, feedback, and constructive/blunt feedback or criticism, any time needed.
6) ok, another idea. how about a wikimedia meetup chapter for the USA. we already have existing chapters for entire countries, for many countries, except the United States. I think we could use one for the USA. I don't picture building this myself, but rather by working out these ideas in tandem with other editors. and also, by building on the great fantastic work of existing local chapters, such as NYC and DC, who are truly exemplary, as well as other local groups.
ok what do you think of these? one initial step that I envision is that perhaps you could help me to build the first initial working group or task force which would be intended as some sort of common workspace for editors from multiple wikiprojects that are history-related. I would like to get the ideas, input, and blunt feedback of a highly active editor like yourself, who is aware both of the importance of core editing efforts, as well the importance of larger structures for our communities. I anticipate a few ways that could work with you and a few other editors like yourself, either on a wide basis, a narrow basis, or anything that fits your current schedule. what do you think? I would welcome any comments that you may have. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 17:26, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
- Sm8900, I am back from some travel and trying to catch up with things now. Do you have any of these ideas on a Meta page or the like, for on-Wiki discussion? --- FULBERT (talk) 13:15, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- well, yes, I have a few places. one place that I have been suggesting at least a few of these ideas is at the forums hosted by Discourse at the website for "forums movement strategy." you can join me there if you wish. I have not posted all my ideas there, but I can post more, if I know I have some colleagues there to discuss it with. thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 13:33, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
