MSU Interview

Dear ErrantX,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 18:22, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Your bot made this edit: [1] but failed to link to the exact place where the discussion is going on. I think this is common to your bots work, so this is a general statement. If you are going to provide a notice of an action or a discussion, then you must provide a link to that discussion with the text of the message. The generic wikilink to Wikimedia Commons does not suffice. If you do not provide this link, your message is utterly useless. Worse yet, the failure to deliver this important link makes a sham of its function. It covers up the discussion but looks like all interested parties have been notified and have been given an opportunity to participate. In reality, they have not. This failure must be fixed. Trackinfo (talk) 00:06, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. If you want to have a go at figuring out how to neatly parse out the diverse range of deletion discussion rationales/links across Wikipedia and Commons please feel free to contribute some code. I have spent quite a number of hours working on such functionality but it is not simple to implement and my time is limited. After much testing, and discussion with others who were responsible for inspiring me to create the bot, the reasonable solution I found was to simply link to the image in question where (rationally) some link to the deletion discussion or deletion rationale is available. I appreciate that this does require a level of understanding of Wiki-processes to follow through with - but even most newbies seem to figure it out. I am sorry that you find my bot useless, a number of other people have mentioned they find it useful in prompting them about deletion discussions they would otherwise have missed, so I won't be taking it down as it appears to add some value. Realistically there isn't much that will happen to add this functionality any time soon (I have other things on at the moment, and as I indicated before it's a non-trivial thing to add). As I said; any code you are willing or able to contribute would be much appreciated On a side note; the reason I sound slightly sarcastic is that demanding things, even if the suggestion is good, isn't really a good motivator :) --Errant (chat!) 00:35, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
(Based on your feedback I tweaked the message to include an explicit invitation to follow the link to the image page - hopefully this partly addresses the issue). --Errant (chat!) 00:41, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

CommonsNotificationBot notifications issue?

On Talk:Situs inversus, the CommonsNotificationBot left a notification that an image on the article was flagged for speedy deletion. A copy of the image was placed on the talk page, but at its full resolution, and it wasn't a small image by any means. I don't know if it's supposed to be displaying only a thumbnail, or the full image, but looking at the recent edits from the bot, it doesn't look like an isolated occurrence. Either way, I wanted to let you know just in case. - SudoGhost 01:19, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

I think it may be the lack of a colon at the beginning of the link to the image page, I placed on here and it looks like that was the intention, if that helps any. - SudoGhost 01:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Bah, sorry about that :) now fixed in the template. Thanks for catching that so quickly! --Errant (chat!) 01:32, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion of image

Your bot flagged the photo of File:Gauerbachdc.jpg (Dr. Gary Auerbach) for deletion due to alleged missing information. This image was uploaded by Dr. Auerbach and released for creative commons licensing. At that time, he was accused of being my sockpuppet because I tried to help him learn how to edit. I unwisely took control of his account for that purpose and when someone looking to crucify me, ran a CU, they picked up only on the ip address from when I did in fact control his account. Regardless, the community ban that was placed on my account, through the kind personal intercession of Jim Wales was rescinded. But alas, poor Dr. Auerbach remains banned, and thus unable to speak for himself in any discussion page re: the photo. At some personal risk in speaking up for him, I have personal knowledge of his having personally uploaded the photo, for which he in fact holds the copyright. What can he, or anyone for him do to provide the requisite "missing information" so that this photo is not deleted? Can you assist? Д-рСДжП,ДС 16:21, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Regarding removal of images from the Karl Ferris Wiki entry

Hello - I was notified that you, on behalf of Wikimedia, have temporarily removed images of the artist's work from his Wiki entry. Can you please explain why this was done? Do you need help in verifying his copyrights? I have been a dealer of his photography for 6 years and a collector of his works for over 20 and would be more than happy to help you verify his copyrights so that you can restore these images. What sort of proof do you need that he created/owns these images? He has been credited with being the photographer/designer of EVERY image you've removed - you can verify that yourself simply by looking at the production credits for each of the album cover images you've removed (you can find these credits listed on sites such as artistdirect.com). He has also been producing and selling fine art prints of these images for over 20 years. While he might not have the merchandising rights (those being owned by the record companies), US and International copyright law allows him to show his images as examples of the works of art he is selling. You will find his works being sold at galleries all over the world, including mine (rockpopgallery.com), St. Paul's Gallery in the UK (stpaulsgallery.com) and San Francisco Art Exhange (sfae.com). Please let me know what else you might need to restore these images to this artist's entry. Thank you for your time and attention. Sincerely, Mike Goldstein, owner RockPoP Gallery - Portland, OR, USA — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rockpop (talkcontribs) 19:41, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Rockpop; I didn't delete any images, someone else did that, my bot just notified you about it. Well, as to permissions - to sit on Wikipedia the images need to be licensed in a way that permits both commercial reuse and derivative works. Images that belong to another individual must be released by them; the simplest way to verify this permission is to get them to send an email to permissions-en@wikipedia.org. You can find full details of the process (and what is required by the permissions team) at WP:PERMISSIONS. If you need any other help please just ask! --Errant (chat!) 19:52, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello - Karl sent me a note and said that he has tried to notify the right people to restore these images. He owns the images and controls the licenses, so what else (other than a letter from Karl) would he need to provide, and who must he provide it to? He contacted me for help as he seemed unable to notify the right people to restore the images to his entry. Please advise - thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rockpop (talkcontribs) 20:00, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Python programming

Hello ErrantX, In relation to python programming, how can I import a PHP file into a python script? Ceradon talkcontribs 23:12, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "import a PHP file into a python script". What is it you're trying to do? PHP code will not run under Python, for obvious reasons. --Errant (chat!) 23:59, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
If it's not too much, could you join my IRC channel ##ceradon please? Ceradon talkcontribs 01:05, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

an IP block.

Could you have a look at User_talk:218.186.15.10#And_I_can.27t_make_a_quick_edit_without_having_to_login_and_do_all_that.3F? The spam certainly deserved a quick block (in hope to get the message through), but maybe 3 months has some collateral effect? --Dirk Beetstra T C 06:18, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Checking over, I gave it three months because the IP had come off a month long block and the immediate activity was spam/vandalism - consistent with the escalation of blocks. 3 months is about the most I would give an IP - I've no issue with it being reduced to "time served" :) --Errant (chat!) 11:59, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of Noel Alpins' photograph

Hello. I'd like to get the file NoelAlpins.jpg reinstated to his bio. It is Dr. Alpins' publicity still, which he provides to all outlets and on which maintains no copyright. If I need to provide additional rationale or evidence, I most appreciated your instructions. Kcroes (talk) 17:19, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
