Grace Kelly images

[edit]

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. I'll try to explain briefly why I reverted those photos. If you want to reply or ask any questions, by all means you are welcome. Because Wikipedia is intended to be a free (in terms of licensing) encyclopedia, anything it contains should also be free, although this objective may be stretched to allow the limited use of licensed material, where necessary, under the doctrine of fair use. Fair use images are allowed if there is no alternative, but if there is a free alternative it should be used first. The image you put into the infobox with the mirror image of Kelly - beautiful image, much more interesting than the one you replaced, but the original image is a free one. That means that nobody owns a copyright on it, so we (and anyone else) are free to use it however we choose. The mirror image one is copyrighted, so to put it simply, someone owns it and we're aren't just free to use it. If there was no free image we could make a case for Wikipedia:Fair use but because there is a free image we should use that unless we find a better free image. If it conveyed something significantly different or noteworthy about Kelly, perhaps it would also qualify under fair use, but both images serve a similar purpose - ie they show what Grace Kelly looked like, so in that sense they are interchangeable. Once again, the free image should be used ahead of the other image. The wedding photo is somewhat different in that it is an historical image. Perhaps you could make a fair use case for it, but in any case, the image of her at the Expo should not have been removed because it is free, and free images, especially very good quality ones, are often hard to find. I guess the main thing to remember here is that fair use exists in law, however Wikipedia's policy regarding fair use takes a stronger and narrower view of what constitutes fair use. I would suggest having a look at some of these pages and you'll see what I mean. I would suggest also looking at the talk pages for each of these pages as these subjects can be quite contraversial and there is a fair degree of discussion. Wikipedia:Fair use (particularly the section "Policy"), Wikipedia:Image use policy, Wikipedia:Fair use rationale, Wikipedia:Image description page and Wikipedia:Copyright all contain very useful information. I hope this helps.  :-) Rossrs 13:25, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For tactfully dealing with user:JohnRobertsly his account (a sockpuppet recently blocked) I don't he seems to have it out for dead celebrities adding any and every rumor ever and saying its cited or he read it but never citing the issue on wiki. His first account was blocked for this and this one was on its way if the sockpuppet issue hadn't come up. I like how you deal with is so called facts. Thanks.--Xiahou 22:18, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks. Best to you to.--Xiahou 23:04, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I took your advice and tried to move the more gossip oriented material in the proper section. I'll continue to tidy it up a bit. It's a pity you won't be editing anymore!

I took a look at your website, too. Cheers to that! Hope all is well.

Hi, Please read WP:NOT. Wikipedia is not a place for personal opinions. You might want to find another site for your material. Corvus cornix 23:12, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
