Updating a broader article

Hi, so I saw your draft: I am not sure if we need a new article on that topic. We had a poorly scoped article at Open urban space, which was in fact largely focused on Urban green space, so I moved the topic -- would greatly appreciate anything to do on that article that would improve it to be better scoped/written to reflect the scholarship and what we know about the topic area. Urban Greening: Follow-Up

Hello –– in August 2019, I tried to create a Wikipedia page for the term "urban greening," clearly defined in top-ranked peer-reviewed scientific journals as, “a social practice characterized by organized or semi-organized efforts to introduce, conserve, or maintain outdoor vegetation in urban areas.” However, my draft page was rejected by a Wikipedia editor stating that there was "not sufficient content to require an article of its own, but it could be merged into the existing article at Sustainable city." Prior to submitting this page, I had difficulty creating a Wikipedia account, figuring out how to navigate the Wikipedia interface, and I was facing several work-related deadlines, so I did not argue with the Wikipedia editor's decision, even though there are numerous reasons (as described below) why it is not appropriate to merge urban greening under a Sustainable City page.

I now see that Wikipedia has published a page on "greening” that offers a poor version of the original article I submitted in 2019. So, I hope you can understand my frustration. Please note that this new Wikipedia page on “greening” is not the same as “urban greening” in several important ways:

1/ The Wikipedia page on “greening” does not explicitly focus on the urban realm (e.g., it references deserts and land use practices in non-urban settings). This is a significant distinction, because urban areas differ from non-urban areas in fundamental ways, including but not limited to biophysical flows such as energy, water, food, and waste; animal and plant populations; materiality and form; socio-economic demographics; political administration; and history.

2/ The Wikipedia page on “greening” refers to numerous themes that have nothing to do with the integration of vegetation in cities, such as “lifestyle choice,” “brand image,” “tiller forestry,” “re-usability,” “energy efficiency,” “responsible packaging and labelling,” “recycled content,” “intelligent design,” and “responsible manufacturing techniques.”

3/ Importantly, the Wikipedia page on “greening” says nothing about the process of urban greening. This is very important, because the process of urban greening includes a range of practices, policies, and socioeconomic considerations that have little do with the material objects and outcomes of greening. This latter point also distinguishes urban greening from concepts such as biophilic cities, ecosystem services, green infrastructure, green urbanism, nature-based solutions, and urban green space.

Regarding the Wikipedia editor’s suggestion to embed urban greening under “Sustainable city,” this is also not appropriate because “sustainable cities” includes a vast array of practices and themes that having nothing or little to do with the integration of vegetation in cities, such as transportation, housing, energy systems, solid waste management, economic development, and social equity. Moreover, sustainability is a broad aspiration that touches on virtually every dimension of urban life, whereas urban greening is a much more narrowly defined phenomenon.

I realize that Wikipedia is volunteer-driven and that there are many editors, and that this can make coordination difficult. But now that Wikipedia has posted a page on “greening” after rejecting my submission on “urban greening” a few years prior, I hope you agree that we need to find a way to resolve this matter in a reasonable and equitable manner. With all due to respect to the author(s) of the Wikipedia page on “greening,” this page lacks a clear focus and it is not well conceived or executed. I can add that I have been working professionally for two decades on the topic of urban greening, my PhD dissertation focused specifically on urban greening, and I have published numerous peer-reviewed articles in top academic journals on this topic. In terms of next steps, I am proposing the following:

1/ Wikipedia create a new page titled “Urban Greening.” I will happily post an updated and fully cited manuscript in the Wikipedia sandbox, and work with Wikipedia editors on revisions.

2/ Revise the Wikipedia page on “Greening” to distinguish “Urban Greening” as a distinct phenomenon from the range of topics (noted above) that have nothing to do with urban greening, and create a hyperlink on this page to the new Wikipedia page on Urban Greening.
