WP CS

[edit]

While I like the idea, it seems like there'd be a pretty large overlap between this project and the (recently revitalized) Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer science. I understand that the somewhat tighter focus of this project might be nice (I just recently proposed a project to clean up Concurrency (computer science) articles for similar reasons). But the WP CS project has the advantage of already having a bunch of active members, and would give you a chance to coordinate with (and solicit help from) people that might not otherwise have contact with a PLT-specific project. At least those were the reasons that ultimately convinced me to can my concurrency project proposal, and jump into WP CS :-) --Allan McInnes 04:40, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Who should I discuss this with? I noticed the nice portal that's been set up; I'd love to add more PLT info to that organizational structure. I'll look into it. (Also got your message on LtU, but I will respond here for now...) --EngineerScotty 06:07, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know that there's necessarily anyone you should discuss this with - it's not like WikiProjects get approved by anyone specific. It's more a question of whether you think you'll be able to get an adequate number of participants to keep the project going, and whether you think it's worth having a separate project for this. It's entirely up to you.
Personally, I would encourage you to join WP CS, and work on PLT issues through there. For starters, it would make coordination easier. Plus, we could definitely use some more people with your level of energy and interest - Wikipedia coverage of CS stuff is spotty at best, and I'd dearly love to get it up to a standard approaching what Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics has accomplished with Mathematics articles. And, most importantly, it'll help us to build a CS community on Wikipedia. Having said all that, if you want to leave your proposal up for a while, and see how much interest it generates, by all means go ahead. Cross-project coordination isn't a show-stopper. If this project does get off the ground, I'll definitely be joining it. --Allan McInnes 06:31, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: if "Who should I discuss this with?" meant "Who at WP CS should I talk to about integrating the PLT project", there's not really anyone in charge over there. You can just jump right in. I and Ruud Koot are probably the two most active members right now, if there's anything specific you'd like to discuss. --Allan McInnes 06:50, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, you might also be interested in taking a look at Charles Stewart's proposal for a Logic WikiProject. --Allan McInnes 06:31, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think working through WP CS is fine, perhaps best. This way we could ensure that PLT has a voice on topics that aren't exclusively PLT (e.g. buffer overflow). --Mgreenbe 13:49, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
