Just checking in

You haven't edited in two days. Let me know if you still want to do this. Serendipodous 17:02, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

are you planning to do the top 25? Serendipodous 15:03, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
@Serendipodous: I've been looking at the exclusion patterns, and I want to take some more time to study them. What can you tell me about articles like Overview effect which get almost entirely mobile views, according to the current WP:TOP5000? Because it was transient, [63] I think it should be ignored. I am not planning to comment on 11-15. EllenCT (talk) 16:02, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
We don't have a lot of info about the all-mobile views, but one in particular, Angelsberg, was due to a bot basically load-testing the mobile Wiki servers. Others are probably spyware botnets checking for internet traffic. Basically, if it gets almost all mobile views, or almost none, you can bet it ain't human doing it. Serendipodous 16:08, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
The Top 25 still hasn't been published. It's less than 48 hours until the raw data gets updated. If you're having problems or do not wish to publish the report, let me know so I can do it. Serendipodous 14:21, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
@Serendipodous: I don't want to comment on items 11 through 25. I don't see how it serves the readers. I'm disappointed in the exclusion list properties I'm seeing and would prefer to comment on the most edited articles instead of the most popular articles, in general. EllenCT (talk) 14:25, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
I wish you'd been clearer earlier; you said "11-15" in your last post. As for exclusions, we've always made it clear that we exclude abnormally low or abnormally high mobile counts. We've been editing this report for years and are pretty solid on the patterns that indicate a false result. If you feel that our research isn't enough, you're free to conduct your own. As to whether it helps the readers or not, well the readers seem to think so; the 25 report gets thousands of views a month. Serendipodous 14:57, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Please be aware of the sanctions

Please read this notification carefully:
A community discussion has authorised the use of general sanctions for pages related to electronic cigarettes.
The details of these sanctions are described here.

General sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimise disruption in controversial topic areas. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to these topics that do not adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, our standards of behaviour, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. An editor can only be sanctioned after he or she has been made aware that general sanctions are in effect. This notification is meant to inform you that sanctions are authorised in these topic areas, which you have been editing. It is only effective if it is logged here. Before continuing to edit pages in these topic areas, please familiarise yourself with the general sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.

Edit warring on electronic cigarette talk page?

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Talk:Electronic cigarette‎ shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war.[76][77] To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you get reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. You've been reported for repeated edit warring.

[101] — Preceding unsigned comment added by VictorD7 (talkcontribs)

EllenCT, right now, there are numerous diffs presented to support VictorD7's case against you and you have posted little in support of your side. Right now, it looks like this case will be closed without action. Liz Read! Talk! 22:06, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

@Liz: Why do you think it is so difficult for arbitrators to see that in the diffs which Victor has presented, I have replaced his right-wing non-peer reviewed think tank sources with sources in agreement with the conclusive peer reviewed literature reviews? He's obviously just going to keep complaining, so if they ignore it this time he'll probably bring it up again. EllenCT (talk) 18:32, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
EllenCT, you are asking administrators, who take time out from their editing tasks to look at all of those diffs that are actually supporting Victor's case against you, to see what you want them to see. That is not a successful strategy.
An editor coming to these forums has to put forward a case, presenting diffs that support specific points they are making. What seems obvious to you is not obvious to admins who don't know anything about you or other involved editors or the disputed articles. My advice goes to anyone bringing a charge at ANI or AE...you need to be clear, direct, concise and explicit. Say what the problems are and give evidence that demonstrates each problem. By reproducing a 3RR charge against you and not providing details in your defense, the admins and editors participating in this discussion are unlikely to see Victor as the problem. If you don't have the evidence ready to support your argument, it's best not to even file a complaint at a noticeboard. Liz Read! Talk! 19:58, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

top25

Greetings, Ellen! Any interest in doing the Top25 again this week? It's my week if trading off with Serendipodous, though if you did it I'd do next week. Looks pretty straightforward at the top, with religious subjects led by the Pope moving in amongst the pop culture entires. George Hotz is due to Reddit [102] as is Robert Black (serial killer)[103]. I'm sadly not surprised that none of the articles relating to the 2015 Hajj stampede are in the top 25. 700+ people dead in many places (airline crashes come to mind) would generate much much more attention. But in a city closed to non-Muslims with no apparent social media coverage, supervised by a government that has a history of saying accidents like this are God's will, people don't care? Sad.--Milowenthasspoken 12:30, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

@Milowent: okay, but I can't do it until Wednesday. Will that work? If so, I'll try to do all 25 by Thursday. EllenCT (talk) 15:06, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, that should work fine for the Signpost, too. Thanks!--Milowenthasspoken 18:24, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
@Milowent:, that's interesting because on this page of the top 20 edited pages, the Hajj stampede was #1. The article may not have drawn attention from readers but it drew a lot of attention from Wikipedia editors. Liz Read! Talk! 20:21, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
  • Ellen, obviously we did not come together back here, though I would love to get your help in the future if you are still interested! Feel free to email me to discuss off-wiki if you wish. Cheers.--Milowenthasspoken 14:54, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5

Newsletter • October 2015

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

We did it!

In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.

Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.

Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.

The work continues!

There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation support WikiProjects?

The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

Until next time,

I've included a link on the banner to the most edited report to give it more attention, though it is not technically part of the Top 25 data. I hope you think that is OK. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
