Hiyas Electroangus. I wanted to leave you two notes - one, I'm afraid I have tagged Clubbed to Death (band) for speedy deletion as a non-notable band per WP:MUSIC. If another admin agrees with the deletion then the page will be removed. If it is deleted, please do not just repost the same content as it will likely be deleted again. If you can address the criteria from WP:MUSIC, change the article to state the points that make it notable. Secondly, please don't place {{editprotected}} on pages unless you are requesting an edit to a protected page. I didn't see any request, and it was needless anyhow since the article wasn't protected. I'd like to lodge an objection to the deletion.

May I ask how I can prove the notability criteria?

Do you need proof of the commercial releases? I know they have at least three commercial releases on notable record labels (Benbecula Records and Third Ear Recordings) and one on an independent label, and I know you can buy this band on iTunes, Rhapsody, etc.

I just wonder what level of notability is required; looking at the Benbecula Records' site, two of their artists, Christ. and Prhizzm seem to fail the notability criteria too.

Here's the criteria from the link I supplied above:

A musician or ensemble (note that this includes a band, singer, rapper, orchestra, hip hop crew, DJ, musical theatre group, etc.) is notable if it meets any one of the following criteria:

Has had a charted hit on any national music chart, in at least one large or medium-sized country.There are, at present, no precise definitions of a "small", "medium" or "large" country in this context. However, a very limited definition of "small" will generally be used, excluding only a few of the world's smallest countries.
Has had a record certified gold or higher in at least one large or medium-sized country.
Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country,(reported in notable and verifiable sources.(The application of this criterion is disputed; see discussion on talk page.)
Has released two or more albums on a major label or one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years and a roster of performers, many of which are notable).
Has been featured in multiple non-trivial published works in reliable and reputable media (excludes things like school newspapers, personal blogs, etc...).
Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable; note that it is often most appropriate to use redirects in place of articles on side projects, early bands and such.
Has become the most prominent representative of a notable style or the local scene of a city (or both, as in British hip hop); note that the subject must still meet all ordinary Wikipedia standards, including verifiability.
Has won a major music award, such as a Grammy, Juno or Mercury Music Award.
Has won or placed in a major music competition.
Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show. (But if this is the only claim, it is probably more appropriate to have a mention in the main article and redirect to that page.)
Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.
Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast on a national radio network.

...and from what you've said, it sounds like their closest approach to the notability guidelines is the one I bolded for you. If I remember correctly, they only had one album released right? Do those labels (sound like indies) meet the requirements stated?

We have these guidelines in most part to keep everyone with a myspace band from having a wikipedia article, and I realize that it can be frustrating for bands that are starting to break to be included because there isn't sufficient 3rd party sources. If you can document that the band meets any of the above we'll be happy to have an article on them, and if they don't currently meet it then we'll be happy to have the article when they do. Cheers! A quick look at http://www.discogs.com/label/Benbecula and http://www.discogs.com/label/Third+Ear+Recordings will tell you they do -- moreover, their artists tour internationally and get national air play. (A quick look at www.benbecula.com and www.third-ear.net will tell you that.)

Lodge Records is a small independent record label, but it is officially registered with PPL UK (www.ppluk.com). This means that it releases CDs with correct ISRC codes, which allows albums such as Ja Bass to be recognised within global media databases such as FreeDB (see entry here http://www.freedb.org/freedb_search_fmt.php?cat=misc&id=8109190b). This also allows the likes of Last FM to track the popularity of the Ja Bass CD with its users -- see http://www.last.fm/music/Clubbed+To+Death.

Why Sheep (http://www.whysheep.net/) - the artist that Clubbed To Death did a remix for on Earthborn - is a well-established DJ in Japan, and has worked with the likes of Yellow Magic Orchestra (http://rock.discogs.com/artist/Why+Sheep%3F). Clubbed To Death may have had American radio airplay - as yet unverified - but I have it on good authority from a former radio broadcaster friend that there is no such thing in the states as "national radio".

I understand (and agree) that you have to keep out the MySpace bands, but I had hoped that with four commercial releases, three on notable record companies, that this would have raised the bar sufficiently for the Clubbed to Death entry to be acceptable. Moreover, as I mentioned before, you can purchase this band on iTunes etc. (page: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=156858359&id=156858320&s=143444) -- these companies having vetting procedures themselves for artists, and the average MySpace musician would find it incredibly difficult to get on.

Ok, that looks like sufficient documentation at the least to overcome my speedy deletion tagging. I don't know if the Wikiproject Music people would have further objections, but they'll have to bring it up on the discussion page or to a deletion discussion themselves if they do. I'm restoring the article as it existed prior to my tagging, and I'd say if you'd like you should cut and paste the above to the talk page (or add the links themselves as references in the article). I'd probably be fine with Lodge Records and can go undelete it if you wish. The album is harder to justify, because what about the album makes itself notable? I don't think we have a bunch of articles on albums that aren't notable (ie had a song in the top 100, particularily groundbreaking, etc). I can create Ja Bass as a redirect to Clubbed to Death's article though, which is typically what I do in these cases. You can always try to bring the album article back (you don't have to take my advice ;) ), but there's no guarantee that it will survive. Syrthiss 22:32, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked WP:Music, and to quote WP:Music#Albums:

"Though this guideline is somewhat controversial, the general consensus on notability of albums, is that if the band that made them is considered notable, then their albums have sufficient notability to have individual articles on Wikipedia."

That to me makes a lot of sense: if you look at Boards of Canada, for example, their more obscure material would not be notable in itself, but due to the writers, BoC, it becomes of interest.
