Hi, I don't understand your reversion of my edit here. The template you reinstated states: "This image was uploaded as a JPEG, which is an acceptable file format." This is in contradiction with {{BadJPEG}}, already on the page, which indicates that JPEG is an inappropriate choice of format for the image. As such, no image should be tagged with both {{BadJPEG}} and {{Overcompressed JPEG}}. It should be tagged with either {{BadJPEG}}, if it shouldn't be in JPEG format at all (as is the case for nearly all images that are neither photographic nor photo-realistic such as this one), or {{Overcompressed JPEG}} if it should indeed be in JPEG format but at a lower compression strength than has been used. — Smjg (talk) 17:04, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Bad jpeg doesn't exclude the current file being over compressed. The file needs to be replaced with PNG or SVG, but that need says nothing about the compression problems. Please don't remove tags just because you don't understand. Eeekster (talk) 17:08, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
I do understand the purpose of the two templates. Firstly, the compression problems of the JPEG will become completely irrelevant when it has been redone as a PNG or SVG, because
  • the PNG or SVG will not inherit the quality level of the JPEG
  • PNG and SVG are lossless formats, and so the quality of an image in one of these formats cannot be ruined by overcompression.
Secondly, a lot of BadJPEGs, even if the quality level is set around 90%, have quite visible artefacts. If we tagged all of these with {{Overcompressed JPEG}} then probably most of the images tagged with {{BadJPEG}} would be redundantly tagged with {{Overcompressed JPEG}} as well, thereby cluttering up the corresponding category.
Thirdly, I think the phrase "which is an acceptable file format" is intended to indicate that images that shouldn't be in JPEG at all shouldn't be tagged with it. Moreover, the template documentation for {{Overcompressed JPEG}} includes in the list of things it shouldn't be used for "linear art-style graphics. Use {{ShouldBePNG}}, {{ShouldBeSVG}}, or {{BadJPEG}} for those images". I'm not sure exactly what's meant by a "linear art-style graphic" but I guess it's meant to cover images composed solely or primarily of lines or solid blocks of colour.
As such, I'm still inclined to argue that BadJPEGs shouldn't be tagged with {{Overcompressed JPEG}} as well. — Smjg (talk) 18:15, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it shouldn't be a JPEG at all. But for now it is and it is over compressed. So why are you obsessing about the tags? Eeekster (talk) 20:42, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
I'm not obsessing, I'm just trying to make sure the tags are being used both correctly and helpfully. — Smjg (talk) 22:30, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
