Redirects

Really? Do you think Bum (homeless person) and Past life (reincarnation) are likely search terms? - SummerPhD (talk) 03:47, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

If you don't think we need such redirects, please prod or recommend for deletion. But I used them in film articles:
 1. The Fisher King: the Robin Williams character is bullied because he looks like a Bum (homeless person)
 2. Here Comes Mr. Jordan - the boxer character loses his memory of his Past life (reincarnation)
So nice to be discussing first instead of edit warring! :-) --Uncle Ed (talk) 12:42, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Irrespective of whether these redirects should exist, why are you going out of your way to include them in articles? What purpose does this serve?
I see that this is nothing new. (You used that link in your Daylight savings time overlap article.) What was the benefit of including America instead of America (the same number of characters) or America (ten fewer characters)?
Incidentally, referring to the country as "America" is an informal practice that generally should be avoided in Wikipedia's articles (apart from direct quotations and such). —David Levy 14:37, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for dredging up that old redirect. I made it years ago, when there was a fuss over whether "America" should refer to the US or to the entire "continent", i.e., the Americas; and what "North America" should mean.
 • The Spanish course I was using at the time (Pimsleur's) said that in Mexico and and other Latin American countries norteamericano meant a person from the US or Canada.
 • Meanwhile, a lot of people were saying that "North America" should include Mexico
I speak American English and I'm loquacious. Feel free to internationalize or shorten anything I write. --Uncle Ed (talk) 14:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
I didn't "dredge up" that redirect. I noticed it when you used it in an article today.
You didn't answer my question. I'm not asking why you created these redirects. I'm asking why you use them in articles.
Incidentally, I'm an American too. —David Levy 15:46, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I thought I answered that question on your talk page. If you feel that usage is inappropriate, feel free to change it. Perhaps I didn't have a good reason and was just going by habit. The great thing about a wiki is that if one person makes a mistake, another can fix it. Why don't you go ahead? And if there's a policy covering this, I'd love to hear more about it. --Uncle Ed (talk) 15:50, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
I've already removed the Bum (homeless person) link, which was superfluous. I see no reason to modify the Past life (reincarnation) link, but I don't understand why you didn't simply link directly to Reincarnation instead. What was the benefit of inserting past life instead of past life? —David Levy 16:20, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Did you miss my comment below? (See WP:HEAR) - anyway I put back the reference I was thinking of. --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:25, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
I read that comment, but I don't see the relevance. I'm not asking why you linked to those articles. I'm simply curious as to why you did so through newly created redirects instead of linking to the actual titles. I don't assert that this was particularly harmful, but it was additional work with no apparent benefit. —David Levy 17:05, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

As for "bum", I was thinking of Tramp#Etymology but got it wrong. --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:14, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

 • This is going nowhere. It sounds like one or both of you think I'm violating policies. I'll just stop editing for a while. Maybe someone, someday, will point out what policy they want me to follow (or stop breaking). For now, it just seems like I'm going against personal preference; if that's the case, why not just undo my work? I won't edit war. --Uncle Ed (talk) 16:25, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
I can't speak for SummerPhD, but I'm inquiring out of curiosity. —David Levy 17:05, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, I didn't used to do that so often. But recently I read Wikipedia:Manual of Style (linking) (section Piped links):

Piping and redirects. Per Link specificity above, do not use a piped link where it is possible to use a redirected term that fits well within the scope of the text. For example, let's assume the page A Dirge for Sabis is a redirect to the page The Sword of Knowledge, and while you're editing some other article, you want to add a link to A Dirge for Sabis. You may be tempted to avoid the redirect by directly linking to it with a pipe like this: A Dirge for Sabis. Instead, write simply A Dirge for Sabis and let the system handle the rest. This has the added advantage that if an article is written later about the more specific subject (in this case, A Dirge for Sabis), fewer links will need to be changed to accommodate for the new article.

I've underlined the parts that caught my attention. --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:10, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
But past life and America are piped links. Why not simply use the articles' actual titles instead? I see no realistic possibility of separate articles with the redirects' titles being written, given the fact that they would cover exactly the same subjects. —David Levy 17:40, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
 1. If you see no possibility of a separate article, you can change it; I'm planning to write such an article - hopefully before daylight savings time starts (sorry about the 's' which is a habit).
 2. Takes me less time to write America (USA) and let the software adjust it. Feel free to make any change you feel improves the text. --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:48, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
To reiterate, I was simply curious. (I remain curious as to how it takes you less time to write America (USA) than it does to write United States, but whatever.) I'm not complaining or asserting that changes are needed.
Do you mean that you intend to write an article titled "Past life (reincarnation)"? If so, what information will it contain? —David Levy 18:02, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
I don't know yet, I'm waiting for inspiration. Let me finish the time zones first. But I might take the hint and just add some material to Reincarnation first. If "past lives" gets too big, I can proposed some Wikipedia:Splitting, in accordance with WP:Summary style, as I did recently with Park51 and Park51 controversy. --Uncle Ed (talk) 18:34, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
That would be sensible. A split should occur when the information present justifies it. Splitting topics first (and seeking content later) is a backwards approach. —David Levy 21:12, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Quiller, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cornish (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Contraceptive mandates requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Zad68 (talk) 17:28, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Nomination of Rush Limbaugh–Sandra Fluke controversy for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Rush Limbaugh–Sandra Fluke controversy is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

I had voted to keep an earlier version of the biopage with my contribution subheaded Positive Law vs Natural Law that was repeatedly deleted - I attempted undo a couple of times, and then the page was ...poof! MrsKrishan (talk) 02:00, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rush Limbaugh–Sandra Fluke controversy until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

I have voted to keep this page also with the same comments as above re: now defunct page. MrsKrishan (talk) 02:00, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Herp Derp (talk) 04:57, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

The article DARPA cheetah has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No reason to think this will have lasting notability

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Zad68 (talk) 00:25, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, okay, I already merged it to DARPA. Thanks, Zad. --Uncle Ed (talk) 00:36, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Marriage in the US

Hope you can find WP:RS to support the statements about the children of unmarried/single parents. The comments seemed accurate and were definitely germane IMO.

As NatGertler suggested, it seems to me, if you haven't already done it, that the Guardian remarks can go into a) the Marriage in England and Wales article, and/or "Marriage" by listing it under "Other considerations" or starting a national section.

Thanks. Student7 (talk) 18:54, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

From the Editor

This month marks the observation of Pentecost, one of the most important feast of the Christian liturgical year. It is our hope here that all of you, regardless of your religious affiliation (if any), find that the holiday, and its accompanying activities, an enjoyable and beneficial experience. We also hope that this "Birthday of the Church" is one which gives you the same joy as the birthday of yourself or your loved ones.

Ichthus is the successor to the long running WikiProject Christianity newsletter, run under the WikiProject Christianity’s Outreach department. As such, you will continue to see information about our latest featured and good articles, DYKs, as well as new members who have joined our project. You might also see links to Christianity related news from the mainstream media!

Help Bring Wikipe-tan "into the fold"

As many of you may know, our unofficial mascot, dear Wikipe-tan, hasn't yet indicated any particular beliefs. However, yes, as we all know, ahem, some people might object to our beloved mascot running around in a French maid outfit. People do talk, you know. ;) If anyone might be able to develop an image of the dear lady in a image more, well, "Christian," I would like to see perhaps a vote for next month as to which, if any, image of the dear girl we might make our own unofficial mascot. Please post your images here.

Christianity in other wikis

As many of you might now, there are a large number of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, including WikiSource, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, and others. I certainly believe that Wikibooks and Wikiquote might be among the more directly relevant sister projects. If any of you can think of any particular efforts in these other projects which you think would benefit from more input, please let us know here, so we can help spread the word around.

Spotlight on the Outreach department

Ichthus will spotlight a different subproject or workgroup of WikiProject Christianity. This edition will spotlight on our vital Outreach department. This comparatively small, but vital, project unit is dedicated to welcoming new editors to Wikipedia and the Christianity related content, and to providing information to the various project members, in forms like this newsletter.

The scope of articles with which this group deals is truly enormous, and, given the wide variety of material with which we deal, we would very much welcome the input of more individuals, particularly individuals who are particularly knowledgeable of the less well-known and less frequently monitored articles related to Christianity.

Speaking personally, I would be very, very gratified if we were to have this become a very, very large and active unit, with members from the broad spectrum of Christian beliefs, practices, and groups. The broader the spectrum and areas of expertise of members we have, the better we will be able to help manage the content. Please consider whether you believe you might be able to contribute in this vital area.

War on Women

Hi Ed, just a note about your move of War on Women to User:Ed Poor/War on Women in March. In future, could you copy and paste articles, rather than moving them? When you move them, it removes the page history. Many thanks, SlimVirgin (talk) 18:36, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought it was the other way 'round. I did move instead of copy and paste, thinking that it was move which preserved the history. Is there something new about the software, or am I just gradually going senile? --Uncle Ed (talk) 00:58, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
When you move a page from article space to user space, you move the contributions history too. This means the history is lost from mainspace, and would mean you could in future request its deletion. Contributions to the encyclopedia (including admin-deleted ones) need to remain in the encyclopedia. That means, for example, that if the article is ever undeleted, people will be able to see the history of the contributions to it without having to move pages back and forth and merge histories. SlimVirgin (talk) 02:25, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
I know that moving an article moves the contributions history. I'd like to see the full history of War on Women. I see that you did a lot of administrative work, recovering the text and all, but could you please recover the history?
If I did anything - in the hopes of preserving the article - which inadvertently made it hard for future readers to see the article history, I'm sorry. --Uncle Ed (talk) 15:14, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

You haven't forgotten your friends down under, have you?

To an Aussie "Eastern Time" is the time zone of Queensland, NSW, Victoria & Tasmania. It was nice of you to tip us your hat in February. JIMp talk·cont 23:27, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh, sorry, I better fix that. Is a disambig page good enough, or should I try to undo the 'move' I just did of Eastern Time Zone? Where does Eastern Time go now? --Uncle Ed (talk) 00:41, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I'd be inclined to make Eastern Time a disambig page (or redirect to one). There are only a couple of hundred incoming links. Fixing these shouldn't be a big deal. What to do with Eastern Time Zone isn't as easy since there are several thousand incoming links. If this were to become or redirect to a disambig page, we'd want consensus for it and/or a bot to fix the links (preferably both). JIMp talk·cont 06:06, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
 1. I'm happy to make Eastern Time a disambiguation page.
 2. Eastern Time Zone used to at Eastern Time Zone (North America) till I moved it a couple days ago. I don't see any problem with it, unless Australia has an "Eastern Time Zone". --Uncle Ed (talk) 15:24, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Before and after DST templates

I'd discovered a slight problem with your before EDT, after EDT, before CDT, etc. templates. I mentioned it on the before EDT talk page. Basically, the problem is that these are based on midnight UTC rather than 2 am local time. I took the liberty of writing a replacement template. This template can do the job of the before and after templates for all the time zones in Canada & the US (could be extended to the whole Northern Hemisphere if we need it). Would you mind if the old ones were deleted? JIMp talk·cont 06:06, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I've known about that hourly difference from the start, and I've always meant to fix the problem. I'd be happy to have EDT, CDT, MDT and PDT start precisely on the hour; then we can fix the rest of the world as well. (Is it because you're from Australia that you have such a global perspective? :-) --Uncle Ed (talk) 13:39, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Eastern Time Zone (North America) vs. just plain Eastern Time Zone

To be absolutely honest, as a resident of the Eastern Time Zone (North America) it's the only one of its kind that I care about, so Eastern Time Zone is perfectly fine. I had been changing links to point to Eastern Time Zone (North America) for the past few months to match the actual title of the article (only as part of massive cleanup, updates and improvements to articles for places), and noticed that someone had just changed it back to Eastern Time Zone. Assuming there was some edit war going on, I looked through the article history and found that there is a war going on, and that you are battling with yourself as the one editor doing all the moves. As the article is linked from thousands upon thousands of articles for places in North America, shouldn't we have some measure of stability here? Will this be changing again soon? Perhaps it should be on some kind of schedule with a handy mnemonic, like "Spring ahead to Eastern Time Zone, fall back to Eastern Time Zone (North America)? I hope that you can appreciate my confusion here. Alansohn (talk) 12:37, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

LOL, without reviewing the history of it I can't remember my precise reason for adding the parenthetical. Possibly at the time I felt there may have been another Eastern Time Zone and didn't want to be chauvinistic.
There has been confusion over time zones and time offsets. Some contributors (Europeans?) have noted that the UTC time offsets do indeed correspond to the world's major time zones, particularly the nautical time "orange slices". But a time zone is a place (e.g., measured in square miles) while a time offset is a quantity, measured in hours and minutes. Maybe you can help me with this matter if I agree to stop fighting with myself, eh? --Uncle Ed (talk) 13:58, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
I've always found the subject fascinating. We take the UTC system so for granted now, but only 150 years ago these standards didn't exist at all and all places observed their own local time. When I saw the page had been moved I just assumed that there was some bitter edit war going on and found it so funny that you had made both moves with equal and opposite reasoning. I re-read the time zone article and I probably agree that North America has the strongest claim to being the primary usage of Eastern Time Zone, while the Australian version is usually denoted as belong to that continent as AEST, even in Australian articles. As a programmer I'll often look at program logic that leaves me scratching my head a few months after I first wrote it that made absolutely perfect sense when I first wrote it, so the process you went through is completely familiar to me. Thanks so much for the reply. Alansohn (talk) 14:22, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Wikisource currently has many old texts available, most of them in the public domain. This is a potentially very valuable source for several things, including for instance links to Biblical verses, because we know that it will, basically, be around as long as we are.

I believe

... in the statements contained in the Nicene Creed. I believe that the Bible is one of the two defining bases for belief. The other is the Sacred tradition, which provides us with means of interpreting the Scriptures, as well as some teachings which have been handed on by God outside of the scriptures. I believe that the Magisterium has been empowered to fill this interpretative function. I believe that clerical celibacy is a rule that should generally be followed. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

I still owe you $50 from 9 December 2006. Do you still work on the West Side? ColonelHenry (talk) 02:13, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Let's discuss this by email or phone. --Uncle Ed (talk) 23:41, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for the delayed response. I have your old cell number from 2006--is that still in use? Otherwise, can I e-mail you using the "email this user" feature on the left? --ColonelHenry (talk) 07:05, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Time Zones and UTC Offsets

I do know quite a bit about time zones and related topics. I have an interest in the topic both personally and professionally. I've been a subscriber, reader, and occasional contributor to the project mailing list for the tz database, and in the not to distant past, I was responsible for keeping the time zone support up-to-date at a major Internet company.

"Time zone" is a bit of a slippery concept, and what it means depends on who you are talking to and in what context, but in general, the distinction you make is generally pretty accurate.

Based on my knowledge and experience with time zones, I think the change you describe is a bad one for Wikipedia. It probably does not increase accuracy (because as you point out, in the UTC offset changes in locales that observe daylight saving time), and it probably does not increase reader comprehension, at least in North America, where time zones are universally referred to by their symbolic names, and not by UTC offsets. Can you point to some examples of these kinds of edits? Have you contacted the entity responsible for these edits, to hopefully convince him to stop making these changes, and to revert the changes he's already made? Scott Roy Atwood (talk) 23:12, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. I appreciate your thoughtful attention to this matter.
But could you remind me what specific change I was describing? (Or point me to the page on which I described it?)
I'm all about increasing reader comprehension, not making things more difficult for the reader.
Which sorts of edits ought I try to convince the "entity" to stop? --Uncle Ed (talk) 18:10, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Quoting you from my personal talk page:
Do you know anything about the distinction between UTC time offsets and time zoness? I've been telling people that the former is how much time you add or subtract from Greenwich Mean Time to get your local time, and that the latter is a place where everyone uses the same offset. Am I fairly close, or what?
It looks like someone went through Wikipedia and methodically tried to replace time zones (like Eastern Time Zone (North America) with time offsets like UTC-05. This is misleading at best, because currently New York and (eastern) Florida are observing UTC-04 due to daylight saving time.
Can we work together on any of this stuff?"

The article Bill Ferny has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Minor character in Lord of the Rings. No external sources provided to give notability outside of Tolkien fandom

Church of the month

by User:Diliff
Frauenkirche (Church of Our Blessed Lady) in Munich, taken from the tower of St. Peter's Church

Contest of the month
We currently have a remarkable lack of Wikipedia:Wikipedia-Books. Right now, Category:Wikipedia books on Christianity contains only 12 books. We certainly could have at least one book on each major grouping within Christianity. One of the challenges for this month, then, is working to put together books on relevant topics. For this month, one contest is for editors to assemble the basic Wikipedia books for each of the main topics of the extant related projects. When finished, they should their creation of the books at the main Christianity noticeboard, and at the end of the month the project will award barnstars to those who have made a significant efforts in developing this underdeveloped content.

Also this month, we are going to have have a challenge to create and improve some of our more important missing or low-quality articles. As biographies are often a bit easier, this month we are choosing two biographies: Karl Behm, which has yet to be started, and the currently Stub-class article Nerses IV the Gracious. A barnstar will be awarded to any editor who can get these articles up to DYK quality level and ultimately selected for the DYK section of the main page.

Calendar
Thie coming month (mid-August through mid-September) includes feasts dedicated to the honor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bartholomew the Apostle, Nativity of Mary, and the Exaltation of the Cross.

Featured content and GA report
Since the last report, William de Chesney (sheriff), Knights of Columbus, and Angelus Silesius were promoted to GA level. Our thanks and congratulations to all those involved.

Wikinews is our sister site for developing news stories. Several events relating to Christianity, like the installation of bishops for instance, do not necessarily merit extensive coverage in wikipedia encyclopedic articles, but can and easily could be covered at greater length in a news article format. Given the number of significant news events that relate to religion, including claims of miracles, assignment of bishops and other religious leaders, church conferences, and other events, this site provides an excellent opportunity to provide in-depth coverage of current events at greater length than wikipedia.

One of our newer editors, User:David_FLXD, has recently gone through much of our content related to Methodism and assessed it. We are very grateful for his efforts, and that of all the editors who have had a role in developing that content. We have every reason to believe that this will make it significantly easier for the Methodism work group to create and develop content relevant to Methodism. To help that along, we certainly encourage everyone to do what they can to help David and the other Methodism editors to bring the content relevant to their tradition to the highest possible level of quality.

An extremely belated apology

Ed. I expect you have completely forgotten about this, but there's something that has been bothering me for a long time and I feel the need to apologise to you and to try to explain myself. In 2003, when (unlike now) I was a fairly prolific contributor to Wikipedia, I made this edit to my talk page. Even to me this seems almost incredible, so you may not believe it, but those insults and the implied accusation of dishonesty in the edit summary were not in truth directed against you. I was actually trying to make a point against another person who seemed to have been closely monitoring my actions in Wikipedia and elsewhere and who had alluded insinuatingly to details from my real life. (Or so I thought. Looking back, it's distinctly possible that the whole thing was a product of my over-active imagination. I do hope so.) Anyhow, I perceived an implicit threat to my physical safety, which was disturbing to me at the time, and I may have become actually paranoid. Whatever way you look at it, it was not rational to make those comments. I really wasn't thinking straight, and bizarrely it was only when you responded (in your typical mild and genial fashion) that I realised that I had given the false impression that the comments were directed against you. But it was very awkward to explain (still is, truth be told), so I did nothing to correct that false impression. Instead, I let those unjustified insults against you stand. The accusation of dishonesty was particularly wrong, because in actual fact I had always been highly impressed by your probity. Although your opinions on almost everything seemed to be diametrically opposed to mine, at that time you were pretty much my favourite Wikipedian. This is because, unlike me, you were unfailingly friendly and polite. You were adept at using tact and humour to defuse tension between contributors. You were always ready to offer excellent advice about how to edit articles in a neutral way, even when the material being added was antipathetic to your personal beliefs. And whatever the circumstances, you were always scrupulously fair. I wish I was a bit more like you. I'm very sorry to have maligned you. Best wishes. GrahamN (talk) 03:32, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

WP Deletion Sorting in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Deletion Sorting for a Signpost article. If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers.
